    Lore is something of great importance about those kind of games.

    I'm so glad I was able to pick up a copy of the core box at retail recently after waiting over a year for it to come back in stock! I agree with you about the flavor text - honestly, with as much knowledge as you have about genre fiction, you should approach CMON with your ideas and see what they say! With the new Kickstarter coming up, they might actually respond to criticism.

    Great revisit, thanks Daniel! I've played it a couple of times and certainly like the game, but I shan't get it. The main reason is that I have so many games with so many plastic minis already. I happily paint minis and I have enough to keep me busy with painting for the next couple of years(!). So my hope is that publishers of games with minis will also offer alternative versions with standees that remove the need to paint and also mean there is a little less plastic in the world, whilst keeping the minis for those who really want them.

    100% agree that CMON should give us more lore/theme wherever possible. the biggest thing for me is the lack of a "congrats, you beat the big bad" scenario epilogue. some folks on bgg wrote a few for Hellboy a while back, and i would love to see CMON do that for CDMD. (i would also love to see an official campaign mode implemented.)
    regarding the ancient one showdown taking too long: i'm not sure, but that may have something to do with using only two investigators. most of the games we play have been 4 or 5 players, and by the time we square off with the big nasty, we're rolling a billion dice and doing 5+ damage per swing. so it might be a player count imbalance -- maybe they could scale the ancient one's health like other games do.
    overall, i'm with you: i love this game. want more of it. can't wait for the upcoming KS. :)

    Such a fun game. The good plays of this come down to the wire and involve everyone standing up around the table for the final dice roll.

    Played Arkham Horror 2nd edition yesterday. It used to be one of my favorite games but after playing it (and being devoured of course) it just solidified that Death May Die is a much more refined and enjoyable experiance.
    I do agree that CMON always hints at a fantastic world without ever fleshing it out. The Others is a great example of this.

    I definitely would love to see more lore with this, when Warhammer 40k came out, when I didn't have a chance to play, I loved just reading the rule book, I was glad you posted this video, I was thinking about playing DMD today, you helped me decide 😊

    DMD was one of the first games I bought when I started my collection in 2020, but I didn't actually open it and punch out the cardboard till August of this year! I regret not playing it earlier, because my group has such a blast! definitely going for the next KS

    I effing love DMD, it's the game that really got me into board games. I got it mostly for the minis, particularly that giant Cthulhu, but the game is just so good I haven't ever really stopped playing it
    Every scenario is fun and exciting, with the exception of the scenario that utilizes the giant Cthulhu which was really poorly designed and not fun. All of the others are great particularly one KS exclusive where the characters run around the Maine woods strapping dynamite to moose so they can get apprehended by a UFO and explode the ship

  • @Boardgamer69
    @Boardgamer69 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I love this game too. If you want to sum it up, look at the ffg playmat where 4 investigators are in a car. This is what come to my mind when I think of Cthulhu death May Die. 4 investigators ready to deal with cultists and an Ancient.

    One element that I really enjoyed in the original Mansions of Madness were the physical puzzles. They weren't super hard, but I liked that they involved the players' brains instead of just a die roll. Perhaps some sort of puzzle like this would allow you to get a bonus in the final battle. You could pick up clues along the way to change the difficulty. Even a dexterity challenge might work.

    I’ve recently picked up everything released to retail for this game, and I have to say I absolutely love it. So much fun, even in losing - so many games come down to the wire. My favorite bit so far was Father Luke in the Nameless Woods taking a chainsaw to Dark Spawn and Nightgaunts.

    Glad you said what I was thinking regarding the new KS. As someone that owns everything from the first KS, I don't feel like I need *more* - it's already an insane (natch) amount of content that I've barely scratched. I was also rather hesitant on the game when it was first pitched, but I think that pulp/action take on the theme really changes everything.

    I’m going to check out the season 3. Not sure if I’m backing yet. It will depend on costs. With shipping & VAT the total cost can end up very expensive. That said I know stretch goals with cmon can be very tempting. I have season 1 & 2 bought from retail. It’s more than enough and I don’t miss the KS extras. So I know it’s not the end of the world if I skip the KS campaign. I know it’s a good game because on the rare times we win it feels like such a big achievement.

    I really enjoyed this game but after completing season 1, I painted it and then sold it on. At the time space was at a premium. Now I am in the process of setting up a dedicated game room, I am considering getting another copy. I don't think I will go for the season 3 box but let's see what is on offer? I will probably look for a painted copy as I still have flashbacks of painting all those tentacles!?

    Great vid Daniel! Really like the "re-visit" format (these games are all so pricey, and its nice to see how they "age") - also wondering if CMON, or someone on BGG could develop a BIG BAD expansion, making it more tactical? deck of cards & battle board in vary the "programming"

    • @TheDungeonDive
      @TheDungeonDive  ปีที่แล้ว

      I would love an expansion like that. The Elder Sign dice game has a small expansion that makes the final battles way more fun.

  • @puddincupp
    @puddincupp ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great review. I agree that the end can be a slog, like a lot of the FFG Arkham games. One issue I have you didn't mention is that the difficulty of the insanity conditions can vary wildly and can make the game less fun. I also don't know if I will back the new KS, because I haven't played with all the stuff from the first one. I kind of wish there were just smaller expansions like more episodes or elder ones. I certainly don't need any more characters.

    This game is in my top 5 of all time best. I agree that they dropped the ball on not having any lore for the Elder one's. Part of what drew me into the game is my love of the Mytho stories. My only ywo complaints are this. First the elder ones should show up randomly not predetermined. That's easily fixed doing a house rule of rolling q D3 for the gates. Second i was really disappointed in the rule book. It was very vague and the missions didn't say what did and didn't count as an action. I had to look it up online. It's still one of my most favorite games.

  • @jonathana6298
    @jonathana6298 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I missed the first Kickstarter for this game and it’s always been on my radar.
    I’m usually all-in on all games. I decided to have some restraint and only get the boxes of the same size, for storage and organization purposes. This includes base game, season 2, unspeakable box, season 3, season 4, and the unknowable box.
    I know this doesn’t seem like I’m exhibiting *that* much self-control, but it is for me. The only me would track down every single bit of content and pay all the eBay prices, AND dropped $180 more for R’lyeh Rising (and would only play it one time max). 😊
    Although… I’m a pet lover and will not be able to resist Animal Allies. 😅

    Thx for this revisit! I'll be sure to get on board for the next kickstarter! I'm surprise considering your opinion about Zombicide! I thought this game was a kind of Chtulhu rethemed Zombicide. But after watching your review, their is a lot more story and narrative direction than in Zombicide. Thats a shame about the context, because as you say everything is in free domain ! Do you know if during the kickstarter it will be possible to get Season 1 and 2 ? By the way, did you play Season 2 and, if so, did you consider it as something that's necessary or is there enough to play a lot of game just with season 1 ?

    • @TheDungeonDive
      @TheDungeonDive  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have read most of the original Mythos stories but I could use some lore information on every card or box just as a reminder to get me in the right mood at the start of the game.
      Also, not everyone has the same knowledge about all that and if you want to find new players to play with they may know nothing about the Mythos.
