I’ve rescued 4 recently, then found myself getting divorced and needing to move to a smaller house. Tried to look into rehoming them but haven’t had much luck for various reasons, humans obviously. They’re the sweetest little boys so I’ve decided I’ll make it work. They’ve come so far since I rescued them, I made a commitment to them to give them a better life and I’m determined to keep my promise to them ❤❤❤ ❤
They’re all house piggies, open enclosures on fleece, cleaned every day, fresh vegetables, herbs and grass daily which they hadn’t had before, meadow hay, nuggets and cuddles. They’re not going anywhere ❤❤❤❤

Well done MamaSheila, I became accidental guniea pig owner, when my partners son, just wasnt cleaning the cage and leaving them outside in the rain and cold, when he got two girl guniea pigs. I have found it hardwork, but couldnt leave them that way, they need us to love and care for them. So I am taking it in my stride, to give them a good life. Sarah's video's have supported me so much, they have been just so good and I feel the support though Sarah's youtube channel, which has been a real help. Hope it all works out for you.best wishes Gary

I had guinea pigs years ago when it wasn't generally known how to care for them properly. When I decided to get piggies three years ago it was a shock to discover they couldn't be kept in a cage and ideally should be indoors. Feeding had changed too. Thankfully I adapted quickly, brought them indoors and watched Sarah's videos. She saved their lives as she said buy 'critical care' before they get ill and I needed it when Mabel got bloat. xx

I recently got three guinea pigs after my gerbils died. I spent months doing research including watching your videos. Pets normally help with my stress and anxiety but the guinea pigs have added to it hugely and I wish I hadn’t got them. I constantly worry about them, spend 2 hours a day, cleaning, feeding, washing etc. and I am not getting anything back. They don’t want to be touched, picked up or cuddled. They will take food from me quite happily but that’s it. To make it worse they really don’t seem to like each other at all, even though they are mum and her babies. I do love them, and take the best care I can of them but for me they are a huge commitment I never should have taken on.

It took me two years to finally be able to touch Nibbles on the head. And Piglet won't have anything to do with me. But my son was totally touching Piglet today on the head and I thought Piglet was sick or something. But nope. It takes a lot of years to gain trust... And they're work. Alot of work. Im still struggling to take care of them. Im now asking my son to help me out.

After my senior dog passed away in September, I adopted 3 little boy piggies from the local SPCA. They had been rescued after being found abandoned in a homeless camp. My other senior dog was very old and I was afraid I would end up completely alone which is exactly what would have happened as he passed away in October. The piggies were the best decision I could have made for myself. I had some experience with them from long ago but I re-educated myself on them mostly through this channel. They make me smile every single day and they absolutely run the show with their little squeaks and coos and persistent demands at meal and treat time. I watched your tutorials and sewed fleece liners and tunnels for them and I follow your recommendations for their diet. They are thriving and they make me very happy. Thank you for all the assistance and continued joy this channel brings too.

Vet bills, vet bills, vet bills! Absolutely agree with this point because *wow* they can add up fast. The 3rd piggie in my herd was dumped in a park and when he got to me, he was still poorly. He got bumblefoot and it’s cost me 2,500 dollars thus far on surgeries and medicine to keep that wound closed and improving.

You should always ask yourself before getting any animal: What does it take to give that animal the best care? I have a lot of respect for people who don't have pets and admid they don't have animals because they haven't got time for them or other reasons. So thanks for putting this topic back in the picture. Especially with the upcoming season, where people buy pets as gifts 😉

When we bought our guinea pigs we assumed they would be super easy to look after, your channel and advice have really helped and I'd like to say we now have three well looked after and spoilt guinea pigs. While they were harder work than we first assumed its not their fault and we would never get rid of them

Thank you again Sarah for your clear messages on proper guinea pig care. If I hadn’t stumbled on your youtube videos, I would have only one pig. I’ve had a few pigs given to me by people who didn’t want them anymore and I took care of them the way I did when I was a kid, about 52 years ago. I cleaned the cage once a week and never gave them hay! I had no idea they needed hay. One pig lived to be eight, so it wasn’t a total disaster. I had a herd of four then only because there were four children who each got a pig and I was the oldest and the most responsible. When I took in a pig about a year ago, I saw your videos and learned I needed a companion for my new pig. I was in a panic to find another male to adopt. Most rescue pigs are in bonded pairs. But I found one big Milky Way bar of a pig in a suburban humane society and now I have two very sweet tame boys.
It’s true! I can’t feel crabby while staring at my pigs! Side note on staring - I have seen not only both pigs sleeping with their eyes closed but I’ve seen them both dreaming! I think they dream about stealing lettuce from each other.

Great video, a few months ago I had gotten my mom to get 1 female guinea pig unfortunately we did no research before so she had no friend and a small cage, then finally I started researching things then told my mom to get her a friend and a bigger cage, well she got her a friend, but it was a male, she got pregnant had stillborns then my mom finally had separated them. they now have a 4x2 cage (with a devider in the middle to separate.). Then when it was my birthday month my mom had gotten me 2 female guinea pigs I named them Apple and Cider and they were from a rehoming facebook group they came with everything (the 4x2 was their cage but I decided to let my mom have it) we ended up buying a midwest plus cage and they now live in my room. But then, my mom saw 2 bonded males and we got them unfortunately one of them did pass away, my mom got the remaining pig a new cage. I had decided I wanted another piggy, we saw this male guinea pig on a rehoming Facebook group and pretty much he had gotten this girls femlaes pregnant we decided to get him, now we at first thought Apple and Cider were actually males so, we tried doing a bonding, didn't work. He was liveing in the devided midwest cage, untill we got word that his babies were born, so we got 1 of his babies and 1 of his brothers babies (because it was that she had let him get one pregnant and his brother get one pregnant) we tried bonding the baby that was his brothers to the male that lost his cage mate, and it had worked! Then we bonded Truffle (name of the male we got) to his son, and it worked so good we named him Puff, they now live in anothe Midwest cage, I still feel really bad about not researching about guinea pigs before getting them, but they are now happy and healthy! My mom takes care of her 4 and me and my sister take care of Apple, Cider Truffle and Puff!

they are a lot of work . We've just adopted a boar piggie from a local rescue -introduced to our bereaved boy today (so far so good.. i think). It's not something that you think about when getting guineapigs for the first time - the piggy cycle could go on endlessly as you never know how long theyll live and seems so unfair to keep the one when the other one passes. And also that its not as simple as choosing 2 piggies and putting them in a cage together!

  • @kingdevilman
    @kingdevilman 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

Fantastic advice, I've lost friends that I've tried to help that didn't want to hear that a solo pig or small cage wasn't enough. One thing I wish was mentioned was the forever piggy cycle, I'm dreading the day my 5 piggy herd becomes 1 , what to do? , as mentioned it's hard work and expensive and the heartbreak of losing a piggy is massive so I don't think I can do this forever .

Perhaps consider rehoming your oldest in the future if you decide you want a break from the piggy treadmill. If you sell your enclosure and supplies to somebody, I bet it would be relatively easy to find someone willing to incorporate your remaining pig into their herd.

I adore my piggies, they bring me so much joy, but they're definitely a lot of work. I did so much research before getting them, but I was still a little overwhelmed those first few weeks before we settled into a routine. Their cage takes up a quarter of my living room and my flat always smells a bit like hay, but to me it's all worth it because just looking at their lil faces makes my brain go weeeeeee!!!!

If you’re an experienced guinea pig owner then absolutely! I have to travel internationally for my work and so having them isn’t really a possibility at the moment. But once I no longer do that then I will adopt lots more of them yet again! But they need the right type of owner. They’re really not a good child’s pet unless that child is particularly mature and devoted. Unfortunately, kids frequently want them, their parents get them as a gift, the child loses interest, and then it all becomes a point of contention between parent and child and the only thing that suffers is/are the guinea pig(s). But for the right owner, they’re an absolutely fantastic pet.

Don't get them as Christmas presents. Do thorough research on them. Ultimately, it's not the kids responsibility to look after them - it's the adults. If you decide it's a yes......take your time for the right pair, research, research and ask loads of questions from where you get them from. Above all, do not rush. Ensure you have both the space and the time for them. They are fantastically fabulous pets, and deserve to be treated accordingly. So far I've had 22+ years (that's in 2 blocks) with these lovely animals, they are such characters.
Very good 9 minutes Sarah - you packed an awful lot of honest truths in that excellent video. 👍👍👍👍👍

They deserve to be cared for and loved, they are beautiful creatures.

For example, hamsters are antisocial, rabbits feel too big to just be put in a cage, and turtles feed on mealworms which, eww. Coming off of dog ownership, piggies seem like a great new journey

Posting in several areas, as I don't know if you'll see this, but my pig suddenly stopped being able to eat his veggie treats and also his favorite Timothy hay heads. He mainly prefers his pellets now. I've done a bit of research and found that their teeth can grow over and occlude the tongue. He really wanted his treats but just couldn't eat them, so we tried chopping his veggies very small, and he immediately was eager and able to eat them. Have you ever seen this? I've read that the vet may have to put them under and file the teeth down (hundreds or $1000 in my area). Someone mentioned even havinf to put the lig down! He's my friend and buddy, five years old, and otherwise is good health. Your thoughts please?

I recommend taking him to a specialist exotic vet with experience in treating guinea pigs (don't bother with normal vets, here in the UK it would be pointless!) before the problem gets any worse (if it is malocclusion it will get worse if untreated), but note that other problems can occur in the mouth and other illnesses can lead to them being picky with foods. The initial consult with a vet won't be that expensive and can give you options for further investigation and treatment. If the teeth need filing down, some vets can perform conscious dental work, but most procedures will need to be done under anaesthetic, which carry some risk - but with experienced vets the risk is low, hence the importance of seeing a specialist guinea pig vet. I would get him insured and try cover costs that way. In the meantime, you should weigh him daily and ensure he is not losing weight (30g variance is normal) and give him lots of good quality hay. Not eating enough hay is a common cause of malocclusion (because it is the silicates in grass and hay that wear down teeth, other foods don't), so ensure hay is always fresh and unlimited in his cage and he doesn't have to reach to always get it from a hay rack. Get some different varieties of good quality hay in for him to increase his interest in it. Less pellets and less vegetables might be a good idea to encourage him to eat more hay, but you have to balance this with helping him keep the weight on until he can have his teeth dealt with. Get some Oxbow critical care or Emeraid sustain in to have on hand in case he should need supportive feeding. Best of luck for your little man ❤

If you have one already then yes, you should get a companion for him/her. If you don't - I don't know your situation so I'd think about some of the points in the video and go with what you think is right. They are a lot of work! Very speedy first comment by the way! 😀

This is a question I wanted to ask for a long time. Do guinea pigs' lifespan last up to 10 years? Im looking for a pet ideally for a longest run. Thank you in advance for noticing stay safe and take care 💞 🐹✨

I blame the pet stores selling them with no instructions, selling toys and food labeled for Guinea pigs but dangerous. They also never mention they need way bigger cage than sold in stores. And a buddy.

They are social animals so your piggie would be happier with another piggie. Their social interactions are very important for their health and happiness. They will be happy with love, but it cannot replace another piggie.

@@oanasamartean2147just because he is expressing excitement for food and your company doesn't mean he isn't experiencing stress due to being alone. Herd animals require their same-species companions to do things like look out for danger when they sleep. Being alone means having to sleep without knowing another piggy is looking out for danger. This can cause stress and reduced sleeping time.

Hi all piggie lovers. I've owned guinea pigs now for nearly 10 years and, believe me, they are hard work. It makes me cringe when I go into places like Pets at Home etc and see young children eyeing up these cute furry bundles. But the truth is, they need lots of time, care and money. I currently have 9 piggies, 7 sows and 2 boars. They are housed outside in a big shed, custom built Kavee c & c cage, with fleece bedding etc, which set me back about £800! Nearly all of my piggies (bar 4 of them) have been rehomed from the RSPCA. One of my sows, Clover, has heart and breathing trouble. So far her treatment, scans, nebuliser etc have set me back over £2,500!!!! I have another one, Roxy, who has just undergone surgery to remove 2 tumours from her belly, costing nearly £500. It's a major expense keeping guinea pigs and NOT a decision to be taken lightly. The amount of fleece bedding, hideys, cosy beds, pads etc (the list is endless) plus food for these hungry floofballs can be huge. Mine are swept out nearly everyday, with the help of my daughter, cleaned out fully (with all bedding changed) every 3 or 4 days (taking on average 3+ hours), with the help of my husband, who washes all of their bedding and gets it dry. On a positive note, they are hugely enjoyable, squeaking cute bundles of fun. As you said Sarah in this video, they all have their own individual personalities too. Hope this provides some useful info for new and current piggy owners. Helen, Milo, Fizz, Winne, Roxy, Guy, Clover, Mollie, Amber and Ivy. Xx

Kinda surprised to hear you call 4-7 "comparatively long lived." Compared to what? Rats and mice? My bunnies are nearing 11 and 7 respectively and there's a 16 year old bun goes to my vet. I follow plenty that are past 9. I've known a dog for 16 years since he was a pup as well... And all those are falling sort of the cats and chinchillas going frequently into their 20s and the horses and goldfish often hitting their mid 30s when properly cared for. I won't mention parrots and tortoises but seriously... Piggies are, imo, right there with rats and ferrets as having too quick a turnover rate for my blood. Honestly I think that's part of the reason why they're marketed as kids' pets, the parents know it won't outlast school years.
For me I think piggies are an unlikely pet because of the mess and you can't just have them roaming the house like the bunnies. But who knows, maybe if someday I don't have any other pets and some need rescuing I'll go for it. But when I think about that I always remind myself "don't get too attached because they don't have a long shelf life." 🫤

They live a lot longer than animals like hamsters, who only live for about 2 years. Piggies can even live up to around 10 years old, which is pretty long.

@@ThePiggieForest Yeah, so hamsters and rats/mice but that seems to be about it. Can make it to ten but doesn't do so routinely from what I can see... Idk, if that's what you're used to, hamsters living only to two, then maybe it piggy lifespans *seem* like a long time. But they're much, much shorter lived than most popular pets and companion animals.
