‘Let’s All Turn On’ is The Gurus mission statement where they list their influences in one song. You’d dig it the most, man.

Hi guys, why a lot of Aussies bands were so popular is because of the fun factor. Gigs were always packed out. Cheers from down here.

I used to plug these guys as a DJ in Los Angeles in the early 80's, and even managed to get an interview with them and their American counterparts, The Bangles. Gurus' guitarist, Brad Sheppard, looked like a male version of Vicki Peterson, and Gurus' drummer, Mark Kingsmill, was the same height as Debbi Peterson!! If Dave Faulkner looked a little more like MIchael Hutchence, he and Susanna Hoffs would have been on the front cover of Rolling Stone. The Hoodoo Gurus and The Bangles were perfect touring buddies.
Unfortunately, the touring situation changed when The Bangles' single 'Manic Monday' caught fire, and instead of being equals in the game, The Gurus were relegated to being The Bangles' opening act. The band took it all with a good sense of humour and managed to get The Bangles to do backing singing on their single 'Good Times' - highly recommended.
The 'Good Times' video has footage of that tour.

First time I became aware of Hoodoo Gurus was when they issued their first single 'Leilani' as Le Hoodoo Gurus in 1982. Like INXS, they did their first appearance on Simon Townsend's Wonder World. Le Hoodoo Gurus soon dissolved, and Hoodoo Gurus emerged to take their place. I got to see them in 1983 and 84, and I was happy to drag my younger sister, Gillian, to see them a year later. Just a great band to see live with fun 3 minute bangers, and a few tender numbers that demonstrate Dave Faulkner's craft as a songsmith.
    Cheers,
    Hayley

I Want You Back - most people think it's about 'Her" leaving 'Him" and he wants her back. Clearly it's her wanting him back. And he has no interest, even saying to her "you might have deceived all of our friends". I've love the Hoodoo's since 'Lei Lani'. The song "My Girl" is actually about his dog. And "Tojo", someone mentioned, is about 1974 cyclone Tracy that destroyed Darwin. I happen to have been there. They've so many great songs, different to everyone else.

You know, the Kiwi band the Split Enz were quite popular in Canade. There is a great live performance of theirs filmed in Hamilton that was on MTV. Crowded House emerged out of the Enz.
The Hoodoos were kind of a Aussie B-52s and the Cramps lyrically and in terms of sensibility (warped humour, power pop, parody, satire). More power pop than surf. Early Midnight Oil had a bit of surf, along with punk, in them. But then so did the Ramones. Anyway, the Gurus and the Bangles had a close touring relationship.

Australia was very good at producing high quality bands as a result of a healthy live music and pub scene. The thing is, a lot of these bands would jet overseas or grow too big for pubs. Midnight Oil, INXS and Cold Chisel became too much of an event to be a cheap night out, and not all of us wanted to see Pseudo Echo grinning away behind synthesizers. Hoodoo Gurus filled a want in the Sydney scene at the time, and we paid them in droves. We had a lot of good bands that followed, but I think The Gurus might be one of the last true salt-of-the-earth no b/s rock bands that Australia had produced.

Not coming at you, but I noticed you claiming that The Cure's version of ''Foxy Lady'' was great - a recording that The Cure didn't even want on their album. I'm going to take what you think with a grain of salt.

@@SPKdesign1 Oh no, I have heard The Cure's ''Foxy Lady''. I think the Hanier channel should use it as a comparison. But nobody was serious when they were recording it. They were taking the mickey out of the song - even though Robert was a Jimi Hendrix fan. I don't know who Michael Dempsey was mimicking, but his vocals are weird. Yes, we are all different, and I appreciate those differences in people. But are you sure The Cure's ''Foxy Lady'' is great? If it wasn't The Cure and it was from a different time and place, I think a perspective might be a little different. The Cure didn't want it on their album, and I can see why. I think 'Cult Hero' is more deserving.

Ah, the video edit of “I Want You Back” is such a ripoff, though. Chopped off half the second verse (as well as a really rad guitar fill).
As it appears on the “Stoneage Romeos” album it’s easily one of the most perfect pieces of ‘60s-influenced power pop ever written, for sure.

I love the Gurus, but their song "What's my Scene" which is their most played song... maybe that's why I don't like it.
