- We're finally back to the Sonic series! ...with a game nobody cares about...
...I promise this will be fun, guys. I swear.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THANK YOU for stopping by and sharing your time with me today. I try not to fill my videos with pleading and begging. So I'll just do it here instead! I cannot continue to grow without your help. You know what to do. Spread the good word. Share with your friends! Heck, go check out some of the episodes you missed! Even without Sonic involved, they tend to be a good time!
Thank you again for the help! I have some cool new show ideas dropping this year, I can't wait to share them with you guys!
There's other levels in this game?!

Lololol!!!! Yeah, I never passed level 1 either
I could personally not beat the
This game did change my life.
Imagine this, I saved up months of pocket money and bought Sonic 3 myself. All my money. It wasn't a present, my parents didn't give me the last bit of money when I was short, it was all mine. I played the game constantly, I was finding out ways to get the the chaos emeralds as quickly as possible, finding all the secrets. I'd only had the game a month or so, so was still early in to the Honeymoon period of getting a new game. Whats this got to do with Sonic Spinball? Well...
I visited my cousin, who I see every couple of weeks or so, and I took Sonic 3 as he wanted to have a go and I wanted to play it with him. After several hours it was time to go. He asked if he could borrow Sonic 3, which I refused as I'd not long had the game and was still enjoying it immensely. He asked again, and I refused. Pressure then came from both my mum and auntie, again I refused, it was my game. I bought it with my money, it was still rather new new, I was still playing it on a very regular basis. But my mum overruled me and said he could borrow it in exchange he'd lend one of his games. I think you can see where this is going.
His game collection was OK, but not great. It's not that he got cheap games, he just made bad choices. I had no interest in any of his games. The game I was offered in return was.... you guessed it Sonic Spinball.
Now I try to look after my games. Im not possessive over all still had manuals in decent condition boxes where in tact and no breaks or scuffs on the box. This sonic spinball was in terrible state. The box wouldn't close, the cartridge looked dirty, the manual was missing, This was a game which had only been out a couple of months and already the game was in this condition.
Over the next few months, when I visited, I asked for the game back but was given excuses of my cousin is out, he's still playing it. It was after about 6 months of asking, my mum finally returned from visiting with my Sonic 3. At last. The box looked tatty. It looks like the box got wet, with some food substance and suspiciously didn't look right. It had been broken. I opened the box. Manual still there and looks in decent condition. What about the cartridge......... Not there....... I.. WAS.. FUMING..
The next time I visited I quizzed my auntie and cousin where the game was and where it had been. It turns out my cousin lent MY Sonic 3 to another one of his friends who destroyed the cover, broke the box and lost the cartridge.
But all is good, I was allowed to keep his Sonic Spinball as compensation.
I can honestly tell you, I have never played Sonic 3 since. This horrible experience as tainted my enjoyment of a classic wonderful game and my faith in humanity in general. I still have the empty, faded, tatty, Sonic 3 box on my shelf; next to the broken, tatty, unclosable box of Sonic Spinball.
So when you its not going to change your life, you've obviously never been hurt so much by Sonic Spinball.
Great video as usual.... even if it has brought back the pain I thought I had laid to rest.
Somebody get this man a clean copy of Sonic 3 STAT.
I actually had my copy of Sonic and Knuckles stolen for like a month as a kid. Can't say it was quite the ordeal you went through, but I understand the pain. I tend to do the exact opposite as an adult. I go out of my way to replace cherished things that were lost or destroyed (but were thankfully also mass produced.)
Traumatic read, 10/10.
I was thinking that sounds pretty sad and messed up and I can't imagine that happening to me....
Then I remembered I lost my SNES to someone 'looking after' it while we moved countries and then never giving it back...
And my n64 was stolen, along with all my games...
A few other mishaps have happened with my PC game collection too, but not as dramatic as that.
Wow, memories suck sometimes...
(I got a replacement n64 as a gift about 2 years later, but I didn't get another SNES for something like 30 years. I had paid for the SNES out of my own money too. Not an easy feat for a kid.)
@@matthewlawton9241 I second this. Id genuinely like to hear from you again if you do decide to go back to Sonic 3. Here I thought my worst issue was never getting past that barrell on the carnival night zone...
I would have smashed my cousin's games for that. Then smash all parents' valuables. I'm not allowed to have children.
Game Gear Spinball cover: has Japanese Sonic and American Robotnik
Genesis Spinball cover: has American Sonic and Japanese Robotnik
That is hilarious 😭
At the time, In America we were calling him Robotnik and in Japan they have always called him Eggman. So. Eggman is on the Genesis and Robotnik is on the Game Gear.
I have never liked American robotnik
I never liked Japanese eggman.
@@joemama8018 i never liked either
“It’s gross. It’s grimy. But in its own way, it’s beautiful.”
*Like the early 1990s?*
The 90s stuff marketed toward kids had a weird obsession with slime, ooze, gak... If you see bright green sludge on a toy or in a game, you know it's a 90s thing.
Boogerman is the most 90s game. Scientifically. That or Todd's Adventure in Slime World. @@changer_of_ways_999
I remember dropping hints to my parents for months to get this for my birthday and they got it for me! I was so happy and I loved the game at the time (not sure if I forced myself to like it because of how much I banged on at my parents to get it) I had no idea you could do fast mode and wish i knew that at the time! The video brought back a lot of good memories, so thanks!
Why does this video have low views? This has effort and QUALITY. Very cool TH-cam,very cool.
Probably because the game in question doesn't exist. Can't get much views off of a game that doesn't exist!
@@DaSheepKiller hey all, Scott here
The options music
Indeed. I subscribed instantly. Good quality stuff.
What the heck did I say "The options music" in reply to?
I wish someone with the skill would do a fan remake of this for the PC. Tweak the physics, add quick saves/checkpoints, bump it to 60 fps and add modding support and, voila, a great game! :)
To be fair it's probably already 60 fps*.
Most games from the 8 and 16 bit era are unless they try and do something that's super-taxing on the hardware. (like some fake 3d effect or way more sprites than a given hardware platform can reasonably handle or lots of bizarre graphical effects)
Sonic runs at 60 fps.
Mario runs at 60 fps.
F-Zero runs at 60 fps.
Mario Kart runs at 60 fps.
All three original Zeldas run at 60 fps.
It's not a big deal for this generation of game.
(* - unless it's running on a PAL system in which case it's 50 fps, but while marginally lower it's not that big a deal.)
Just get a megadrive emulator and play it on that. You can save with an emulator at any point so you can choose to save on level completion.
No quick saves. The worry of starting over from some earlier point in a game is more than half of what makes video games fun in the first place
@@1122markj When chasing chaos emeralds in Sonic, that's not how I felt. I saved before each attempt (having completed the game more than enough times already).
the game basically checkpoints every time you collect an emerald. That being said, I wouldn't be against continues being added on top of the existing lives system. (if there are continues I honestly don't remember, I just tried to get all the secret special stages to rack up lives)
One of my old favourites. Your videos have been alot of comfort to me in the last few months particularly Nick. Thanks man.
Says it looks like a death metal cover, shows no death metal covers.
I still dont get it. how is iron maiden death metal?
lmao true! I'm gonna say it reminds me a bit of the cover of In Flames - The Jester Race for some swedish melodeath lolol
@@cryptohello7666 They're not. He just doesn't know what death metal is.
That part made me cringe a new asshole. Great video otherwise.
the options music sounds like how getting electrocuted feels
Everything you said is true but i love this game! Always jump into when they release it in collections! Also Cluck alert sound has always been stuck in my head forever lol
As "just fine" as this game can be, I have a lot of really nostalgic memories with it.
I don't know what it is, but I really dig the spritework and level themes. It looks about as '90's' as a Sonic game can get... which I love.
Also, the options music makes me laugh. It's hilariously ear-grating, which makes me like it ironically for some reason.
*On a side note, how would you react if this game got some sort of reference in the live-action movie? Random question, but I'm kinda curious.*
It's largely going to depend on how I'm feeling about the movie as a whole. If I'm having a miserable time, no amount of "Hey you remember THIS thing?!" will cheer me up.
That said, I'm not really sure what they could bring from Spinball that I'd even want to see! But if I see some kind of reference, I'll at least appreciate knowing they did their homework!
Speaking of the sprites, since I never made it past the second level, I sometimes browsed to see what the other levels looked like. One thing I noticed, and apparently some other people noticed it too, is that the third level seemed sort of out of place.
I later learned that there was a reason XD
Woah, I've been playing this game since I was in diapers, and had NO idea you could change the speed!
Also, say what you will about the sound design, the boss level music is some of the best in the franchise. Never have I wanted to dance while also feeling so afraid of the mad Doctor at once.
I too played this game as a child, and I think a factor in never discovering the option to speed up the game was having your eardrums shattered, really didn't make me want to go back there
Wait... you CAN speed up the game in game? I was so certain that speedup was from an emulator!! I would have loved this game so much more if I knew that!
I absolutely LOVED the boss music! Once upon a time when I was doing a play in school I got to choose the music to play between scenes, and it was this boss music!
I remember when I was a kid the death noise scared the hell out of me
When I was a kid and I played this game for the first time I was so pissed off at it lol. I was expecting something more along the lines of a standard Sonic game. Going back to it now, I actually like it. It's a fairly unique spin on a pinball game. Great video!
The boss music is the anthem to all my nightmares. Absolute nightmare fuel. I love this game. But seriously that theme literally gave me nightmares, I f--k'n love it.
10:39 "Funky action" sounds like something from JoJo.
A quick history of Sonic:
1991: Sonic 1
1992: Sonic 2 AND Sonic CD
1993: Sonic... Spinball.
Also, MEAN BEAN MACHIIINE!!!
Mean bean MACHIIIIIINNNNNEEE.. is a good game. Im going to bug you every episode until you bring up spinball on game gear again
it's just puyo puyo 2 but not as good
I saw that episode, here is it 10:01
the ending of this game made me laugh my butt off so hard when I saw it. After all the years of frustration and pain I went through to get it, it was so satisfying.
i must be the only person who actually finds the options theme catchy despite the ear-bleeding metallics. lol
nice video btw you deserve more views and follows than you currently have, curse youtube algorithm...
Bro, the way he ended the video by just yelling MEAN BEAN MACHINE! made laugh so hard I thought I woke my sister up.
Man, I actually really really wanted Sonic Mania to feature Toxic Caves. The stage has really unique gimmicks and aesthetics so it wouldn't feel too similar to Studiopolis or Mirage Saloon. Plus Tee Lopes on the track would be Amazing.
6:45 is that sally Acorn that popped out of the Capsule?
I made it to the second level once, like, 10 years ago. Then I lost my 3 lives immediately. I didn't know you could change the game speed, so I should pull out that old cartridge and give it another shot.
It doesnt make a massive difference, but it helped me a bit. Game is still terribly tough if youre trying to beat it and not just goof around.
Yokus Island Express is a good example of how something like this could be a treat
When I was a kid I had no concept of a "bad" game. I loved this game and grinded to get better until I beat it. Of course I knew that a lot of things in this game were more or less based on luck, but I had played actual pinball machines and expected the same from the game. I still have fond memories of this game even if I realize now that it's flawed in so many ways.
3:04 Fun fact: If Metropolis Zone didn't have a third act, this stage would never exist.
Feel free to ask why.
I don't need to ask, because I know exactly what you're talking about.
For everyone else: The short of it is that Metropolis Zone was originally just two Acts and was going to be followed by a single Act Zone named "Cyber City Zone" (or to use its older and better known name: Genocide City Zone), but it ultimately got cut. Its level layout became Metropolis Zone Act 3, and its art assets were reused for this particular table in Sonic Spinball.
@@LonelySpaceDetective Yes!
@@LonelySpaceDetective That's right. You know, I'm actually recreating the Cyber City tiles based off of the art from this stage (which for anyone unaware is called "The Machine") and the plan is to upload it to the VG Resource as a custom sheet.
EDIT: Plans have fallen through due to my stupid idiot self discovering that Tom Payne himself showed off the REAL graphics, and they look completely different.
Dude ive seen 3 videos of yours so far and now you have a loyal subscriber. You comedic timing is great and you opinions are down to earth and agreeable for some nostalgic gaming memories.
That part about the options menu is the best thing I've seen in many many moons!
I remember trying so hard to beat the game and I finally got past the sewers. I was like "YES! I BEAT THE GAME!" Then I realized there were more levels.
As a kid, after I beat Sonic 3 + Knuckles and Sonic 2, I didn't have Sonic 1, so this was my jam... And I actually beat this one too. I greatly appreciate that you don't dump on it like others and say it isn't bad. :-)
I actually really liked the music and level design, but yeah you're exactly right about the difficulty. I never finished the first level and I didn't know there was more!
I liked this game a lot as a kid. It was challenging and took no prisoners (until I found stage select code in a Tips & Tricks mag). I really enjoyed the griminess and sort of vague controls. It was like a beat-up muscle car, while Sonic 1 through 3 were like sharp and polished Japanese sport cars. I didn't even register the faults of the game until I got on the web and read the hate. But you did a good job of being fair in this video and gave a great retrospective. Thanks for the post!
I've never got past the first little bit.
Honestly I didn't as a kid. This video was a lot more painful than shown.
I always thought Spinball's grubby grimdark aesthetic was because it was based off of SatAm? it explains the freedom fighters being in the mini-game, and robotnik's freaky characterization
You sir, are a genius. Thank you for these videos! Wish you could get the rights to future stories in Sonic games btw. That'd be dope.
My wife just got me a Sega Genesis Mini for Valentine's day and I decided to use the save state feature to actually beat this game, something I was never able to do despite years if attempts in elementary school. Didn't see this video until after I beat it so I didn't have the pleasure of speeding it up...oh well, I guess part of the nostalgia for me is the feeling of being in one of those nightmares where you can barely move normally.
1:25 the funniest smash cut i've ever seen in a review LMAO bless this channel
Is no one gonna talk about the sound that it makes when the dragon(?) Is about to eat you?
im still having nightmares

@@letteredsymbol7922 *GREAT ESCAPE!*
I always told myself "I'm the only one that likes Sonic Spinball." growing up. Probably not true, but sure felt like it.
I have really mixed feelings about this game. I loved the aesthetic and music and actually managed to beat it when I was a kid, but it took months of playing to grind through it because it was so punishingly difficult. When I finally beat it I was so proud... and then I never touched it again. You couldn't have paid me to play it again.
Thinking about this game now as an adult fills me with equal measures of nostalgia and dread lol.
This game takes so much flak while Mean Bean Machine is left alone. I loved this as a kid. The music, the sprites, the overall dark tone. Granted the gameplay pissed me off to no end but i was a dumb kid, i just kept playing.
Edit: You......can adjust........the game speed........FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK
I want to say I got this game for my birthday in 1994. I can't remember for sure. I do remember playing it for hours because it was so difficult, but also because it was so much fun. Even as a kid, you could definitely tell that it was not made by the same team that created the other games. The gameplay was, as you mentioned, completely different. I remember thinking of it almost like the Sonic version of the redheaded stepchild. It wasn't as desirable back in the day and I remember the reviews being mixed, but it was still pretty fun to play. I just bought a Genesis Mini to give to my kids for Christmas, and I hope to revisit this game soon!
I had a super nintendo when I was in grade school, and my parents got me a genesis as a christmas gift a few years later. By that time, the pack-in game was Sonic Spinball. It was the only game I had for the longest time, and I kinda learned to love it even if I hated it a little bit. It takes so long to get through the levels, by the time you've beaten level 2 you've definitely had your fill and move on. I still go back to this game every now and then just for the nostalgia, and I'll admit that it's fun until you start getting frustrated.
This game was my introduction to video games. I can still remember the christmas I first got my genesis, and I was only around 3-4 years old, so it holds some significance to me and my love of video games. I do remember going to a friends house and playing sonic 2 for the first time (never owned a mainline sonic game on the genesis, sadly) and noticed sonic could spin dash and had to see if he could do it in spinball, and I was excited to see that you can do it.
I've watched a few of your videos now and I've gotta say, great content! I also had no idea about the speed up option... Finished the game for the first time ever about a year ago and it would have been great to have known about that. Oh well, back to it!
The fact that the parts of the video with the options menu theme are the most watched parts speaks volumes. I don’t know what kind of volumes, but it speaks em’ loud and clear with a little OH GOD WHAT AM I HEARING AHHHHH sprinkled in.
If you acknowledge Mario 2 as a Mario game you kind of have to agree that Mean Bean Machine is a Sonic game. Re-skin or not, it is a great game that I loved to death as a kid. Still appreciate this video, though. Sonic Spinball had its issues, but it was still a unique and enjoyable game. Definitely in the top ten Sonic games for the Sega Genesis.
This was my first exposure to the franchise and was always surprised people didn't like this game as much
I loved the artwork and still listen to the OST to this very day
I absolutely went nuts as there is a 30 minute version of the Options music. I've listened to it at least... 50 times. That's 1500 minutes of ear abuse lol. It's the best part of the game.
Yes. I too enjoy listening to face-melting post-industrial punk rock tracks with subliminal messages disguised as laughably bad SEGA Genesis OST...
This game was a stopgap title since the game, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, was delayed until 1994, split into two halves with the other half, Sonic & Knuckles, being released a year later in 1995 with lock-on connectivity...
First time I played this game, I was, for some reason, always open to go into the options menu when I first played a game, and I kid you not, this game instantly broke that habit.
I like Sonic Spinball, farting robot music and all, fight me. It did need more time in the oven though, specifically the physics.
as for the 'bad' music: that's due to the fact that the guy in charge of the music wasn't informed of the split between SEGA and Nakamura until shortly before release forcing them to replace the original (sonic 1/2 based) music in a very short time with something that wouldn't require royalties the higher ups at SEGA forbade.
Played this game on the ps2 collection when I was a kid, most of the songs are real bangers. It also might be my favorite sonic game.
Sonic Spinball has the best ending to any Sonic game. After an extremely tense and frustrating battle after spending years as a kid playing it, to see THAT happen was a memorable moment of catharsis and humor. I love this game. And it shows how much the people who made it cared for it.
Amusingly enough, I do think the levels' aesthetics would be good for reuse as traditional levels: Toxic Caves especially could be nice, if given a Mania-style creation.
Turns out, the third level was actually MADE from normal level aesthetics. That's why that level's graphics feel like they belong in a more traditional 16-bit Sonic game than a game like... this.
@@GMaster4308 Yeah: graphics from The Machine and a few others were reused, one even for a canned non-Sonic game, too.
@@KimPossibleShockwave Cyber City Zone, right?
@@GMaster4308 IIRC Scrap Brain, too. Early Sonic games' development cycles were pretty haphazard, despite their organization.
@@KimPossibleShockwave What level in this game were Scrap Brain's graphics recycled for? If you don't know, that's okay.
By far my favorite episode, laughed so damn hard when the Options Music came on. lol I dare anyone who has a Genesis Model 1 and Sonic Spinball to go to Option Mode and listen to that song with headphones on full blast. lol

@@a-s-greig I did it when I was a kid lol I think I came out okay lol
This game always reminded me of Flubber the movie as a kid, not that I've ever watched it (still have yet to see it) but I've seen the green blob before and I now know the name of the movie so I can reference what I am talking about. It usually felt weird with gross details like this as a kid to me.
This game is the definition of childhood SEGA PTSD.
There was a normal speed all these years? What the fuck, lmao. About Toxic Caves being the first level, I don't recall exactly how recently it was discovered but I believe there was intended to be a level before that, even lower in the fortress.
That intro literally gave me nightmares as a kid 💀
this game was fun, a kid back in the 90's searching for anythting lore related to sonic especially seeing snips of the Satam cartoon on australian TV only to notice the charecters in SSB was the drive to keep playing the game to unlock any more secrets, same time I was an avid collector of the sonic archie comics too but again kid in the 90's with no real internet access thats all I had to go on, SSB defornetly was a different game, no necessarily mastering the mechanics of the controls but getting familur with them enough to make it to the end but least there wasnt a dull moment getting to the end (unless you died enough times to literally memorize the sewer level) it was always one of those things that this game was weird, especially adding the Satam/Archie charecters, as a kid I begged for this stuff but to see it but not able to really have that play ability with the charecters was sort of a let down to the game, still SSB holds a place on my top few games of the past
I consider myself a spinball stan
and I have been listening to the options music on full volume for 3 hours.
I love it.
As someone who loves pinball, I do wish they had come out with something closer to Dragon's fury/ Devil's Crash which is an amazing pinball game done on the Genesis.

Can anyone PLEASE make a one-hour version of this clip!? This is JUST PURE INSANITY... XD
I agree that if the game had the same physics as the mainline games, it would've felt great. I always enjoyed its aesthetic and soundtrack, well beyond when I played it when I was younger. But, I can't deny my satisfaction only goes as far as the first level. It feels the most satisfying of the four.
Also, I has absolutely no idea you could speed up the game. I am going to boot it up right now. I really want to know how that feels.
Oh man! I remembered playing this game when I was little and I had such a rough time with this game. I had trouble trying to get through this game and it took me like 10 tries before I actually got through it. Awesome video!

I pretty much paused the video to make this comment then continue. Had to be done. >_>
Ghost, Iron Maiden and the mighty MOTORHEAD..
Yeah no Death Metal.
Sonic's eyes in the reflection of the minigame follow the ball. Such a neat and well done detail!
6:15 I think part of the reason it never had a Sequel, was because Sonic Spinball has connections to Sonic SatAM and the Archie Comics.
7:50 Because Sonic Spinball has connections to Sonic SatAM. The second Cover has Robotnik in his SatAM appearance.
That toilet robot scene cracked me up. And so did the ending.

The first second I played and then I entire just went hey let’s play sonic three
honestly a sonic pinball game deserves another chance. it was way too good a concept to waste on an okay game like this.
like, imagine:
eggman opens a giant casino sometime after mania. this casino, is obviously powered by the seven chaos emeralds, split off into different artificially-themed zones. the zones themselves are all distinct from one another, but the scenery is clearly fake. the areas would be: a green hill-esque table, a casino night-esque table, a mystic cave-esque table, an airship fortress table, a water-themed table, an ice cap-esque table, an ancient ruins table, and finally a grand finale table with an extremely ritzy eggmanland table.
each table besides the final one are accessable from the start. they each have a chaos emerald attached to them, with a mission tied to each table and a boss. defeating the boss of each table is what opens the path to eggman. however, the chaos emerald, which is much harder to get, requires you to beat a series of missions that lead into a harder boss fight. earning the chaos emerald attains wizard mode, and attaining wizard mode on each table (sans eggmans table) unlocks super sonic, which functions as a means of getting to the secret area in eggmans table... wherein lies the true final boss. the game ends with eggman getting so mad he tilts the table, which ends in the entire base exploding.
The sprite work in this game is INCREDIBLE, especially when you consider that Sonic 3 hadn’t come out yet. So much personality and fluidity.
I actually really loved this game as a kid. It's sort of a guilty pleasure now, as it is not a fantastic game.
this game hates us all on a personal level
It's mad that it barely even existed
The one sonic game I never beat.
I never played sonic spinball. it looks kinda fun to be honest, but comparing this to the other games on the genesis, it looks a bit wired. But it still looks like something I would play when I was little
Love the video. Awesome visualisation and great funny jokes . Nice length too for a spin-off game. 8/10
Yeah you can really only say so much about this one. Thanks Omar!
I liked it. Always used game genie infinite lives. That last level is tough

Well shit..
Got to love that Funky American Action
This game is still very distinct and I love it's outlandishness!
Holy shit there’s 4 levels?? I’ve never beat the first one as a kid😂😂, I specifically remember my mom praising how fun this game was and telling me my older brother would play it
