  • I'm using four Hanna meters to test my pond water
    - Nitrite
    - Ammonia
    - Chlorine
    - KH
This video shows you how I use the meters and the results from my pond water. Because I am Red/Green colour blind I cannot use the standard test kits by myself. I always need someone else to determine the readings. The readings are not as accurate as using the meters.

Thanks very much. Yes they are the best way to get pond readings. They are about £70 each but well worth getting Ammonia and Nitrite if not the Chlorine, and KH. Buy them one at a time.

Yeah they are a much more accurate reading. Buying them one at a time is a great idea. I would go Ammonia, Nitrite, Chlorine, KH. Thanks for watching.

Great insight to using the Hanna test meters. I have seen them before and do look a great piece of kit although a tad expensive 🤬. May be worth buying one at a time over a period . Thanks for sharing 👍

Totally agree. Buy them one by one. Ammonia, Nitrite, Total Chlorine, KH

Hi, I’m looking to get the Hannah chlorine test kit so I can check the pond and see if my dechlorinator is still effective. What’s the difference between the free chlorine and total chlorine and which one is best to get?

    • @peterfinkill8098
      @peterfinkill8098 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Gareth.
As I understand it the difference is.
Free chlorine is all the bad chlorine that you cannot live with. This has to be a zero reading on the meter.
Total Chlorine contains Free Chlorine plus other not so harmful (in the short term) chlorines. You would try to get that to zero too but may be ok if it's not made up with any Free Chlorine.
So if you only get 1 of the 2 meters then get Total Chlorine and try to get it to zero
If you have both chlorine meters then if your Free Chlorine is zero then there's no need to panic if the Total Chlorine shows a small reading.
I hope this makes some sense to you? If you're still confused then let me know
      Regards
      Peter

Hi Peter, thanks for explaining, that does make sense now. I’ll start with the total Chlorine one and then can add to it if necessary.

Just got 2 today Ammonia and Nitrite, Ammonia was 0 Nitrite was 6 x3.29 =19.74 divide by a 1000 =0.01974. So is that good bad so so, there's nothing like a chart that I can find to tell you what it means. my liquid test says I don't have a problem clear on the colour chart.
Sorry to sound thick but this is new to me.

Hi. Thanks for your comment. Don't think your thick you just haven't learnt that information yet. You will learn by asking.
I have seen differing values but obviously we want both of those values as low as possible. I have seen a TH-cam video where he shows a chart for Hanna Meters for Ammonia and Nitrite values that shows Green Values(Ok), Orange Values (Keep an eye on this) and Red values (Bad get the values down).
It is at about 18 minute 50 secs into the video.
      th-cam.com/video/fsSIGs3QvKs/w-d-xo.html
There is also quite a bit of information on the 'Manky Sanke' site (Syd Mitcheli) www.mankysanke.co.uk/index.html
And an Ammonia values chart based on your PH and Pond Temperature.
I think the thing is not to panic if it goes up higher than you would like. Just stop feeding and do water changes.
Your Ammonia and Nitrite readings are fine.

Expensive to buy and expensive for reagents. Buy them one at a time and build up your collection. Ammonia, Nitrite, Total Chlorine and KH. They are about $70 here in the UK. How much would you have to pay in the US?
