    I found Eldar in 2005, a self-titled album that I played endlessly. Now, 17 years later the boy is all "growed up" more structured, more disciplined, but with the same jet-propelled hands moving across the keyboards at a speed one would need a super high-speed video camera to capture! I'd been into jazz long before I discovered Eldar, but he added a level of virtuosity and musicality that completely won me over!

      Dude literally had more chops than Tatum when he was 16. Let that sink in. That's like being faster than Usain Bolt at 16, and yet largely unknown.
      All the fanfare about Joey Alexander's prodigious talent as a teenager, richly deserved of course, but I think Eldar was the far greater child prodigy.

    American dominance in jazz is over. Here comes a wave of Eastern European musicians who have been learning Chick solos since they were five. Ah well, there's still football and basketball, for now.

    • @through-composed7795
      @through-composed7795 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Come on, it’s too straight, where is the swing and the taste.There’s no flavour.

    • @paulmayerpiano
      @paulmayerpiano 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@through-composed7795 Like I said, raised on Chick - no swing, lol. But seriously, who among the hot young jazz players still swings hard? I honestly can't even think of one. That flavour, tasty as it may be, just isn't in production anymore. It you do swing with any sort of devotion and conviction, you're nothing but a stuffy "traditionalist". If you don't swing, you're a soul-less, feel-less wanky fusion player. There's no winning. At least this guy has put in work and can play his tuchus off without repeating himself too much.

    • @through-composed7795
      @through-composed7795 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@paulmayerpiano . If I want to listen to scales , I might as well listen to a classical pianist

    • @through-composed7795
      @through-composed7795 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@paulmayerpiano BTW, Chick Corea , Was not a swinging pianist, and he would the 1st to admit it .

    • @paulmayerpiano
      @paulmayerpiano 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@through-composed7795 Classical piano is way more than scales, but I get what you mean. BUT - look at the options having such a solid technique opens up! It's been my experience that a lot of pianists who are born in Eastern Europe start with an arsenal of technique fundamentals that North American pianists only start to touch at the graduate studies level, if ever (my personal opinion is that when it comes to teaching piano, in North America we basically do everything wrong, lol). Eldar has more lateral freedom on the keyboard than 99.99% of his peers, even at the professional level. His pinky and ring fingers are fully contributing members of the team, instead of just being used only when needed, or avoided altogether. Pianists know - this is a struggle for all of us. Sure, his approach could be pared down, and maybe include more space, more judicious use of guide tones, better phrasing, but at this point his job is to decide what to leave out, not struggle for execution - a nice position to be it, imo, IF it doesn't become a trap. Most great musicians usually have a period of maturing, where they practice like mad in their early years, step back, and then decide what to keep and what to throw out. I hope he goes deep and transcends his "wunderkind" status. I hope he finds a good mentor that he can trust, who will ask him the questions that need answering, not just get him to play like them. I wish him the best, as I would for anyone who is this talented and hard working. I honestly wonder about the whole "swing" thing - yes it's an indispensable part of jazz language, but I really wonder about it's place in "modern" jazz. At this point, it's a necessary part of someone's foundation, like bebop, but are you really going to play most of what you play with great swing feel, the way earlier jazz players basically considered it mandatory? In 2022, probably not. Maybe it's just necessary for certain tunes because of the era they originated in, like this one, and not for others.
