I'm a car mechanic and years ago I found 4 pinkie baby rats in the engine of a car I was working on. I ended up taking them home and nursing them to adulthood. The runt unfortunately died before adulthood. But the other 3 lived for 6 years and made some of the best pets I have ever had. They completely changed my view on rats.
The only downside to having a pet rat is that their lives are so short. Anyone who has had a rat will tell you that they are so capable of love and so extremely intelligent. It's sad that an animal with so much intelligence and big personalities do not have longer lives! I still have a rat shaped hole in my heart from losing my rat Lydia years later. She had such an impact on me.
Cute, and sad that this lovely rat died. Cows, chicken, turkeys, goats and many more "farm" animals are also sentient, intelligent and have personality. They also have a much longer lifespan (up to 20-30 years), but humans kill them already in their juvenile or young adult phase before they reach the age of 2-3.
@@ahashdahnagila6884 sort of not really though. Pet rats do have a preferred potty spot, but you cant train for that. Our couch was old and gross anyways, so he was happy on his giant rats nest. Rats are amazing animals. I rescued a street rat in Bronx NYC. The babies mom was probably killed by the bait (use birthcontrol or clean up food left out people). He was likely a orphan, tiny baby was kicked by a fruit vendor on the street. He is now a year old, videos on my page of the sweet fella,
Imagine you're starving and freezing in the streets when, suddenly, a hyper-intelligent giant just takes you in and pampers you and cares for you the rest of your life. We should all be jealous of Ice Cube.
Ice cube was beautiful and a massive thanks to this lady.Who showed him all the love and kindness all animals deserve.Just wish there was more out there like you♥️
He's so adorable. Im sad to hear he passed away but he was so fortunate to have found such a loving owner. You can tell he was very loved and my goodness he's so cute!!!!! I love she's spreading the message that rats indeed do deserve love and respect. Theyre very smart animals ❤❤❤❤❤
i always had gerbils and ppl think tailed rodents are gross but i love them. id like to get a rat cuz gerbils are too fast and wild . easier to tame a rat
I am glad the owner of this loving rat aims to dispel the myth that rats can't be loving pets. I grew up with a girl who had several rats as pets and they were so cute and loving. I'm sorry to know she lost her beloved pet. My condolences. You gave him such a good life because of your love.
@@Manuel-zo3wg you can tame just about anything if you get it young enough! Or you get a domestic rat( like the woman in video) and tame it to live with you and teach him/ her little tricks. It's quite possible and easy enough
@@janeE011 Pet rats differ from wild rats in a few ways. Rat breeding is not even 200 years old, arose from the interest of pied catchers to learn more about their "prey". Over the years, those that were less aggressive/shy towards humans were chosen for breeding, leading to the pet rat. Unlike wild rats, pet rats are extremely tame, even in the absence of human contact. Likewise, they are no longer afraid of light, and are also very active during the day. Basically, any species can be domesticated. It only depends on the will and the necessary time, since domestication takes place via reproductive selection (animals with particularly favorable behavior are deliberately crossed with each other, this takes time, since this process takes place over many generations).
I love rats so much. We had six. They are such beautiful, intelligent, social animals. The worst part, is that they don't live very long, and it's heartbreaking every time they pass. That's why we stopped adopting more. But, I miss having them in my life so much. Love, love, love them!
Having pet rats completely changed my view on pets. It's not just about cats and dogs. All these animals need our love and protection. Even the small guys deserve respect, for the love they gave me is an experience that has changed me forever. It's a little late but my condolences my lovely rat fan friend. I completely understand the spot they take in your heart, it's so much bigger than I ever expected. Much love to you and yours ❤
All creatures, plants, and human beings are here for a purpose. Some animals were meant for pets, and others were meant to be a part of the food chain, along with the plants .
@@sellbydate LOL! Even though rats are not normally eaten by people, rats are still part of the food chain. By nature, ALL animals, especially referring to those in the wild, are part of the food chain. This means that somewhere, an animal is going to be eaten by either another animal, or by a human being. Humans (for the most part) are at the top of the food chain. 🍀 As for certain farm animals (such as cows), a few of them do get lucky enough to be converted into pets... especially at farm sanctuaries. 🐮🐓🐐🐏
@@bobbieschroder6617 I know what your saying but if an animal is giving us love and we love it back I think it can be a pet no? Sometimes love between unlikely animals happen pig/duck. Horse/cat to name only a few .. I think if love is there no matter how unlikely 💕 it's a nice thing
@@sellbydate Sure! I realize now that I should have worded it a little differently. What I meant to say is, there are some animals that were *_destined_* to be pets (it was in that particular animal's destiny, such as John Smith's pet rats). I wasn't referring to only certain types animals, such as dogs and cats. I was referring to any animal, in general. _That's why I brought up farm animals, as an example, in my comment to you._ Sometimes people make them into pets, even though they aren't traditionally seen as pets. I hope this clears things up for you. 😃
I agree. Ice Cube looks like a Dumbo rat, which is a heavily domesticated breed. They are sweet and mellow and would not be able to survive in the wild. Humans seem to think we can just domesticate any animal, but when we get bored of them, we think we can just throw them out again. Maybe that’s the case for snakes, which is why we have such a huge problem with invasive snakes in Florida.
@@carolg6598 I didn't notice that, but you're probably right. A non-dumbo is much more likely to re-adapt without an owner, not saying that's "good" by any measure.
I found a domesticated rat sniffing around my garage door and was able to return it to a distraught owner. So sometimes I think they can get away rather than thrown away.
@@carolg6598 I've heard about the rock boa and the... another kind of boa, can't think of it, crossing and having the rock boas very aggressive nature and the other boas extreme size creating an especially troublesome invasive snake. I like snakes and would probably have a room full if I lived in Florida lol.
My dad had a pet rat when he was a child too, and he took it to school in his pocket. He was a very nervous kid (with scarlet fever and St. Vitis dance as a kid, sick for 2 years, and it affected his nervous system), the teacher's took a blind eye and let him have his comfort animal.
That is so true. They're also psychic, many of them. They are also capable of altruism. But whatever they are, they have the right to be here too. Once we were more a part of the animal kingdom. Then we separated, advanced, and became the enemy of all animals, unless we favor them and take them home.
This made me cry. I love this woman so much for what she did to help him, and to give him some bliss and love. You could tell how happy he truly was all because of her.
As a rat owner this simultaneously broke and warmed my heart. Broken because he was abandoned and sustained horrible injuries, but her compassion and love gave him another chance.
I’ve had two female rats and now 3 male babies and I feel that 100%. I sobbed the second I noticed his feet because I’ve never seen a rat amputee and I couldn’t imagine what it’s like for him 😭😭🥺
I just saw in the comments that he passed away, so I just wanted to say to this kind-hearted woman, I'm sorry for your loss. I'm so glad that there are such wonderful, loving people in this world such as yourself. It's obvious you gave him such a good life before it was his time to go. It's hard losing the ones we love and it seems unfair that we outlive our animal counterparts, but I can tell he was a very happy rat because of you and that may seem small to some, but I know it meant the world to him. You're an inspiration ❤
@RATHALOS well pet rats are intentionally bred, of course u have the accidentals, but I've had rats for over 20yrs and I can tell u the make the BEST pets (I've had more types of pets than I care to list), comparable to tiny lil doggies. I love my rats and they love me right back. Btw, having rats in the home keeps the real (wild) pests away, haven't had any rodents coming up in here since they've been around😉. Also, most people like u have a complete change of heart after spending just a lil time around a pet rat, many of them commenting in this videos thread alone.
@@theprofessor1484 Hopefully.....there is hope for us. Still, too many folks give themselves reason to have little or no respect and sympathy for another, esp when the other is different. They even do it to other humans, telling themselves that their own personal beliefs are 100% logical (they cannot tell the difference between the two?) and that anyone who is different doesn't have intelligence or even let alone an emotionally conscious perspective. I've been growing tired of human stupidity. It has been making me cranky....lol... This video does cheer me up tho....🤗 It is a good thing to see that there are humans out there that care.
I rescued a very young wild rat and found him a refuge in the woods where he was able of foraging his own food, but as I held him he turned his little body around and attempted to bite my hand. Luckily, his teeth were not sharp enough to piece my skin.

Ugh, rat lives I learned the hard way can be really short! A few years ago, ours started acting not right one day, the vet diagnosed him with congestive heart failure and said he probably had weeks to live, he ended up dying on the way to the vet ED that night to put him down when his breathing got really labored :'( I think we're still too traumatized by the whole ordeal to try to have another pet rat anytime soon.

If you have ever been blessed enough to share love with a rat they will remain forever in your heart ❤️ What a wonderful lady to have rescued this beautiful boy and given him such a loving home.
Pet rats are extremely loving animals. It's horrible if someone did that to him. I kinda hope he just got loose and wandered outside on his own. Would be strange behavior for a tame rat but preferable to someone having discarded a sweetheart like that.
I used to have a ferret and he got out the front door somehow one day. thankfully there were some people walking by and they brought him home and asked if he belonged to us. It was very nice of them to do that instead of assuming he was abandoned and taking him home. They could have easily done that and I never would have known what happened to him. I'd like to think the rat's owners just had something like that happen, instead of thinking someone with such a sweet pet would leave them outside in the cold like that. :\
My younger daughter wanted a pet rat for years and I was always like ‘ugh, no gross’. Then last august I caved and we got Sirius. He is the literal BEST. We all love him so much, he’s so smart, sweet and cuddly. He completely changed my views on rats and I’m so glad we got him and I can’t imagine our house without a pet rat now! Ice Cube looks so good for what he went through, I’m glad he has someone to love him! What a sweetheart 💕
LOL, my mom was the same way with all my rodents. She would reluctantly allow them (she grew up without pets, didn't want her children going through the same thing), but never touched them or anything. Well, my smart trained rat Pogo would go downstairs, climb the cabinets, and get into the Cheerios. Guess who was in the box when my mom went for a bowl? LOL, she SCREAMED bloody murder and out came Pogo just as cute as cute could be with Cheerio dust all over her, and my mom just laughed. She didn't know rats could be so sweet and naughty at the same time.
I went through something similar. I was saving up for pet gerbils and was calling pet stores to see where the closest place they were being sold at was. The one place I called, the guy said, "Well, we don't have any gerbils. But we have rats!" And I felt a certain way about rats, pretty similar to your views actually, lol. I told my mom and she said, "Maybe you should get rats instead?" But... still, lol. I didn't want rats. Well, we visited the pet store to get some supplies. The rats were in the cage, and the shop keeper let me hold one... I was so endeared, we took two of them home the same day. I've had them for a week and a half, and even though they are still adjusting and have had a few mishaps here and there, I love them. They really changed my perspective on the species. They're already so friendly and curious, I can't wait until they become more confident with their surroundings. They are simply the cutest.
I am so sorry for your loss. He was truly a sweet little soul.. bless you for the love and kindness you showed him. The Love of an animal is a truly amazing thing and a gift from Jehovah God. You were blessed to have one of those precious gifts..💜🌺✌️
I got a pet rat for my daughter when she was young. She wanted a hamster but the female rat just seemed like a better option for her. We both fell in love with her. She used a litter box, played with the cats and dog. She was amazing and we will never forget her. Her name was Kitty 😁 and she went EVERYWHERE with us.
I took a male, Splinter out of the hands of a friend who wasn't prepared to deal with him in high school. He knew his name, came when he was called and followed me around everywhere. He loved being near and was my best friend for the few short years they live. I just wish they lived longer.
You're an amazing mum. Rats are really really good pets for kids. Contrary to popular belief, they're very clean and intelligent little things. It's just a shame they don't live very long. It's amazing you and your kid got to share the world with beautiful Kitty, and got to know how sweet and intelligent they can be. I wish they were given more time in the day and more people accepted them. As a kid my family had four growing up, each were so unique. Woodstock, Cosmo, Basil, and Daisy. It was never easy when they passed even though we knew they had really short lives, but I would change a thing. They saw these lumbering, evergrowing giants and loved on us as much as we loved on them. Thank you for being an amazing mum, and rat mum haha. It's not easy deciding to get a rat

@@jajagabour8150 do you think they just "create" filth from their skin, more than people? Poison just somehow leaks out of them...? Since pretty much every animal that eats meat can eat rat, including humans, they can't be any more dirty or poisonous than anything else that's edible. Rats spend a third of their day cleaning themselves - much like cats. You don't need to give cats bath's because they are so clean, the same goes for rats. If a rat if filthy its because its environment is so filthy that they can't keep up with the mess that gets on them... which is a HUMAN caused problem. Nature doesn't get that dirty, only places created by humans and then filled with human muck by humans do. That isn't a "rat" problem, that's a human problem - we can't push our trash under a rug and then blame the floorboards for being gross.

i always had gerbils and ppl think tailed rodents are gross but i love them. id like to get a rat cuz gerbils are too fast and wild . easier to tame a rat
@@janeE011
Pet rats differ from wild rats in a few ways.
Me too.

@@bobbieschroder6617 well rats we don't eat so are you saying they should be our pets and not cows for instance?
@@sellbydate LOL! Even though rats are not normally eaten by people, rats are still part of the food chain. By nature, ALL animals, especially referring to those in the wild, are part of the food chain. This means that somewhere, an animal is going to be eaten by either another animal, or by a human being. Humans (for the most part) are at the top of the food chain. 🍀
As for certain farm animals (such as cows), a few of them do get lucky enough to be converted into pets... especially at farm sanctuaries.
I wish people wouldn’t think that releasing a domestic animal is a good thing. They don’t find survival easy.
They don't think it's a good thing. They just don't want to be bothered anymore.

All animals deserve respect and empathy.they have feelings too.
That is so true. They're also psychic, many of them. They are also capable of altruism. But whatever they are, they have the right to be here too. Once we were more a part of the animal kingdom. Then we separated, advanced, and became the enemy of all animals, unless we favor them and take them home.

Pet rats are extremely loving animals. It's horrible if someone did that to him. I kinda hope he just got loose and wandered outside on his own. Would be strange behavior for a tame rat but preferable to someone having discarded a sweetheart like that.
And we try to kill them all. They are also a souls .
I know from experience that when pet rodents wander off they can easily get lost. So it's possible... although neither possibility would surprise me.
Well, there’s many cruel humans out there… but I hope that you’re right
My younger daughter wanted a pet rat for years and I was always like ‘ugh, no gross’. Then last august I caved and we got Sirius. He is the literal BEST.
Does he have a buddy?
It would be great if you get him another rat as a buddy to make his life complete! :)

I am so sorry to hear of the loss of this sweet baby. He was truly blessed to be given a second chance at life.
He was very well taken care of. I loved reading his story. ❤
Rats are some of the most intelligent and loving creatures.
Also filthy
@@genehen6495 THANK YOU. Well said!!!
@@jajagabour8150 like any pet just give it a nice bath
@@koolkat2867 While I respect all of your opinions here I still do not like rats sorry everyone hate to burst your bubble but there are millions like me who would gladly take them out permanently
He is so beautiful. Great you rescued him and believed in him.
Oh my stars, Ice Cube is absolutely adorable!! 💖💖💖 The injuries he sustained are dreadful but he has a beautiful, pampered supported life. His human is fantastic!!
I watched this video again because I loved it the first time and when I read he’d passed away tears flooded my eyes. So very sorry to hear I’ve cube passed away but you gave him the best life and I’d like to thank you for saving him. X ❤❤❤
the sound he makes is not the hiccups, that means he is very happy
Happy hiccups
It’s called bruxing which means happiness or sometimes stress. Their eyeballs jiggle and pop in out - due to teeth grinding and it’s adorable. 🥰
Yes, they chirp like that when they are happy. If you tickle their bellies they chirp too.
My heart breaks for the the woman in this video who lost her beloved Ice Cube. So happy he was given such a loving home and she should know she is loved as well. ❤
The Chinese said he tasted very good with rice
@@spankmodemy parents told me about that and i cried so hard 😭 they’re very against it

Thank you for caring for him, I started crying when I saw his poor paws
You gave him a happy and loving life. Sorry u lost such a good friend. Bless you so much for rescuing him. 🥰
I’m so sorry you lost your sweet Ice Cube. I so enjoyed watching him soak up all the love you gave him. How lucky he was that you found him and gave him such a wonderful life! Thank you for sharing him with us. ❤
I’ve had many, many, pet rats. When I lost my first, “Max”, I cried for weeks. I became an animal tech a short time later, and adopted/saved many more. Ice will live forever in your heart, his spirit always near you. God Bless you for saving his life, and giving him quality years before his passing. ❤❤❤
What an incredible story! Poor guy losing his paws and at the same time finding such a friend who cares so much! You are a special person ❤️
You are a kind, wonderful person. Glad you and Ice Cube have such a nice friendship.
You are such a good person. I’m so sorry to hear about your loss. I always tell people rats are great. Better kinder and smarter than hamsters. They deserve love and respect. Shame on anyone that would release a domestic animal into the wild. People suck! Ice Cube had a wonderful life thanks to your love and care. Please keep spreading the word. Rats are amazing!
I would like to see rats made extinct through a genetically-engineered plague which attacks their specific DNA. We can now really do it. The many other species of rodents would pick up the slack in nature. This world would be a much better place.
@@josephinetracy1485 they already tried that with people (worst species ever). The world would be a better place without people.
@@lauraschmidt4197 I hate rats... they're much worse than ppl.... disgusting creatures..
@@josephinetracy1485 why would you watch a video of rats and say you want to kill them all especially a video of rat rescue- bizarre at best and negative issues for sure. Go find another person to complain to. Stir the pot elsewhere.
@@lauraschmidt4197 I have a morbid curiosity for the stupid..
Blessings to this woman who rescued Ice Cube. He is so adorable and cute.
