Todd, great idea for a video, everyone wants to do the sexy polishing , but it's all for not if you do not have the fundamentals in your your kit. I think it's great you that you review the fundamentals, and are always reminding us the importance of proper washing. As a suggestion another good video would be drying without any type of forced air and to use or not use a drying aid, if so what type of drying aid for a given protection.
Thanks and yes...washing and drying is the cornerstone of detailing. If you don't have it right, then you're wasting your time on everything else. As for "drying aids", we are making a movement to have that term stricken from our vocabulary! :). Keep good protection on the car, and use high quality drying towels, and you don't need such a thing.

I have the chemical guys cyclone. It doesn't work well and they are supposed to be exchanging with me. Meanwhile I have 6 mitts, a side for each panel. I scrub the mitts out when I'm finished. I just don't think after marring my car with 2 bucket method, if I can trust doing so again after the exchange. Great that it works for you guys.
The best way is make a faucet near your washing station. And instead of using buckets, clean the mitt under faucet in every panel. Works %100. No scratches in 6 years for me

But you are having to go through the water to get to the grit guard? So surely some particles are going to naturally come off your mitt or sponge as you reach down to the grit guard and contaminate the water?
Hello Todd. I was wondering do you place any faith in the old detailers' "CD test" ie that if a wash media will not scratch the back of a CD, it will be safe for auto paint.
Whats the wash pad you have there Todd? Doesn't look like the Gyeon Smoothie. Also so far in my testing I feel that the microfibre chenille mitt and the esoteric wash sponge to be the safest in preventing marring. The tightly woven microfibre mitts tend to drag dirt on the surface causing very faint maring(I noticed this on black vehicles). Not sure if you have the same experience.
I'll have to admit I use 8 mitts to wash my car. I'm just too paranoid I'll screw up. I use three buckets, 2 with soap/water and 4 mitts and the third for used mitts. This way I can just let my mind wander and not be careful.
When I wash a panel I typically do 2 to 3 swipes. But not repeated swipes or pass( meaning I don’t wipe the same section), I move the wash mitt in a snake like pattern covering a 50 x 50 section, then I flip it and use the other side to continue another 2 to 3 passes before I dip it into my bucket with the grid guards........ now I have been rubbing it onto the grid guard and what I actually do is; I stack my grid guard, 2 grid guard in a bucket. my question is being that I use both sides of the wash mitt and I do scrub both sides of the Wash mitt....... Seeing that I’m dunking the wash mitt, is the water uplifting the contamination I lifted from the top side of the wash mitt?
Great point pal I allways wring the mitt out before I put it in the rinse bucket to get rid of a good portion of dirt...... I've never agitated on the grit guard as I don't want to go to the bottom of the bucket where the dirt is🤷♂️I agitate it with my hand both sides and give it a good few dunks then wring out before entering the shampoo....... A gring guard is there to help keep the dirt down but a small partical which is a 1000 times smaller than the grit guard holes will find there way back up noattwr what anybody says
If people are going to go with this ROUTINE here you need to squeeze your mitt or sponge before putting it into the RINSE bucket allowing the DIRTY water to be squeezed out of the mitt or sponge.
I use a rinseless wash every morning before I take my car out of the garage do I still need to use two buckets most of the time I can't even see dirt on my car it's just dust
Gerard Joseph Not to defend Larry but there are jobs where i use a microfiber towel because it’s lighter than a wash mitt so therefore I don’t get exhausted as fast and I can easily flip and fold to a new side 4 times Before disposing the towel.
@@usagimoto1423 I actually do use Larry's method. I find it alot more efficient time wise and of course it makes me feel much better knowing I've almost negated my chances of cross contamination.
How people didn’t think you actually had to agitate against the grit guard is beyond me. You need to physically remove the contamination from the mitt. Having a grit guard on the bottom doesn’t just magically remove them. Having the washboard attachment helps a lot.
Just so you know.....soap is NEVER needed to wash a car. OK? Plain water in a bucket is all you need to wash the dirt off your car.....I have washed my cars two to three times weekly for 40 years and never used or needed soap....Car washing soap is a huge waste of money bigtime!

Rather than introduce a dirty mitt into a bucket, put it to the side and use a clean mitt. No remote possibility of introducing dirt into any bucket. A grit guard cannot offer that type of safety.
Not many people want to go to that type of effort, particularly since this method can be done safely. There's nothing wrong with that method, and we would gladly sell people that many towels and / or mitts, but it's based on the false premise that wash mitts can't get "clean" this way. Both a fresh / clean mitt and a fresh / clean towel have equal chances of marring the surface due to the dirt / debris that sits on the paint.

What a minute, maybe it doesn't make sense to have 2 grit guards. Because you can do all the agitating you need a in the rinse bucket. Why agitate in the wash bucket?

We don't condone the use of rinseless washes...particularly with such frequency.

Grit Guards are stupid and pointless. Just get 1 mitt per panel or per 2 panels so you never have to worry about grit ever. Grit Guards are a waste.
