Looks like I'm a bit late to the comment game here. Thanks for the fun video and review! I greatly enjoyed seeing the cut tests and I'm really glad you liked the handle ergonomics.
Good point about dirt and pivot bearings. I've experienced noisy dirty pivots before but they've always been able to open and close. Considering you get more outdoor use out of your knives than I do, I'm curious if you've ever encountered pivots so gunked up that the knives don't open and close properly anymore?
Re: the controversial flipper and lock choice, the rationale behind the flipper was more about having a bit of a failsafe in the unlikely event of lock failure (I'd rather be pinched by the flipper than bit by the edge), and the compression lock was chosen because of the strength of the design and advantage of not having any fingers cross the closing path of the edge compared to a liner lock. I definitely understand the frustrations of people who are used to and are comparing this versus non-flipper compression lock knives and having to clear the flipper tab when closing the knife. However, if it is compared against liner and frame lock flippers, the flipper/lock interference and number of steps to close is the same at worst (or better once you build the muscle memory to lift your finger a smidge to clear the flipper tab when closing).
Anyway, thanks again! I really appreciated your honest take on the pros and cons of the design in all its funkiness 😛
Awesome to hear your take Brian! Thanks for visiting with us geeky knife analysts!
Awesome to see the maker of the amalgam!
This review I sat on for a while. I’m not sure why. I think I’m moving away from 20 plus minute videos - but let me know what you think about how long you like a video to be!
I'm cool with longer videos because you are entertaining AF. Hell I already own this and I'm still watching the review!
Your videos are entertaining from begining to end no matter the run time
Long, short, - just keep 'em coming!
As long as you need it! Don’t cut out content. If people want to end the video early, they can. You can’t make a short video longer
kfzofa ...yep...
200$ in rope a month, dedication at its finest, thanks Pete!!! 👍 and thanks patreons!!!
Lots of people removed the flipper tab . Taichung can't get detentes dialled in for some reason . Ruike can on a 30 dollar knife but not Spyderco on a 200 dollar knife .
I got this guy for the long section of flat blade. Much better for food prep than my paramilitary 2. Yeah neither one is meant for that task, but my EDC knife the one that I keep the sharpest, and it's fun to use a sharp knife for food prep.
The handle reminds me of the Hinderer designed ZT 0561. This just might be my next knife. Thank you for a great review
Don't worry about the length of the video. Just produce what you feel it right, say what you need to express about the item and post it up. I don't have a time limit set for listening to good stuff.
Totally agree Pete. Work knife bronze phosphorus washers only. Even teflon is a no from me . Chr. Thanks for sll you do. ATB from Mcr. UK. Love to all.
Great point about outdoors blades and bearings vs washers.
FWIW I don't really mind bearings (so long as they are caged bearings) as I find a quick blast from an air compressor and a spray of WD-40 will keep a folder working until I have the opportunity to strip and detail clean the knife.
Excellent review! The length was fine, as it entailed more than just a pair of hands and a blank table.
I’ve grown to prefer PB washers for their simplicity and ease of maintenance. I very much liked how you pondered the role of the Amalgam compared to Spyderco’s other offerings. Some people might not share your opinions, but it’s great that you explained (and showed) your reasoning. Super well done all around!
Your vids are not too long. They are informative and entertaining as well. Cheers.
"Butterknife shape" --I had the same thoughts as well. Plus the sharpening choil is too large, and loses blade area which provides the most leverage. I'd grind off the flipper tab too as it inhibits function.
AWESOME intro!! I know it took some time and thought to do... The rolling size comparison is actually very helpful. Cool knife, would like a more EDC sized version. Maybe a 3.25" Mini Amalgam...
I just ordered one of these to kind of companion my bk16 and hatchet when I go camping. The Caribbean is too similar to the pm2 salt which I already have I do not like the looks of the shaman and the endura is like a big delica which is not what I'm looking for.
Great review!
Thank you for showing respect to the USA during the size comparison. Fuck yeah.
Great review I love the knife but like you I wish it had washers instead of ball bearings for sure, I've had it on some job sites even drywalling but us my olfa for most stuff in that situation
Been on the fence as to acquiring this knife; not that much of a Spyderco fan overall but something about this one does draw me in. By the way, loved the South Park 'America, Fuck Yeah' insert at 3:08 Buck 110, that gave me a good laugh.
Not South Park, Team America - World Police! Great Movie ;-)
Buck should full on make an advertising campaign using that jingle.
You do A LOT and your videos are great this is JUST A SUGGESTION:
As you are doing your cut tests you are continuously cutting with the same knife, my suggestion is keeping another sharp and another dull knife as you do your test to also cut the paper to compare to the dull/sharp knife seeing how close you may be to either edge. Just to help in case there are any biases.
Now like I said this is just a suggestion. You, in my opinion, you get as scientific as you possibly can especially considering you aren't getting paid to do this. So also thank you.
Pete what exactly was that Japanese style short sword knife that you held here in this video I liked it
that was the crkt hisshou
That part with the Buck got me.
Totally agree- no flipper and phosphor bronze washers would be great. Mine will move on to secondary market. Too bad as overall form factor and stronger tip is attractive.
Longer da betta. Keep making, we keep watching. I think its time for you to try some more benchmades
I have been shying away from flipper tab knives lately, even on liner lock and frame locks, the tab seems to get in the way when closing the blade. Great review!
Great job Pete. Thanks so much for the info. Cheers from America.
Thanks frank!!
😂lol'd during size comparison with buck 110. America indeed! That is the nicest buck 110 I've seen- you have cool knives.
Hi can you help me out here what’s the sharpening tool that’s got the percentage of the angel and has the display read-out on it. Looks mad.
Damn that mirror edge looks great
Finally, a MAN'S knife! Only thing I don't like is that compression lock. Thanks for the video my Bladed Brother ⚔️
So unless I’m wrong you soaked your kme stones is this correct I’ve seen people use them dry what is the best method I have a kme system and a noob will I have better results I’ve only used dry so far I like the kme but I’m not getting great results any tips would be great... love your videos!
Y'know, if you had a Hapstone R1 and a set of Edge Pro Diamond Matrix stones, your knives could have 15 dps edges (yes, I'm aware of the "invert the guide" trick on the KME) in about half the time it takes you to do 17dps with a KME.
That was a nice spyderco. 👌 😊 Thanks for shereing
Thumbs up for "re-maintains that thickness" @ 3:58
I need to get a strop which one should I get to touch up a blade. I’m not a experienced sharpening please help do I need paste on the strop
WE‘RE THE RENEGADES OF FUNK
I’ve got nothing but time...lol. Your reviews are great. Just do what makes sense to you.
TOk...why your choice of 17 degrees for all your testing? I try and reprofile to 15 degrees...mostly so I can use the Spyderco sharpener that is at 15 degrees and 20.
17 degrees is the listed angle for the most acute angle you can get on a lansky if memory serves probably chosen to make his newer tests translates better when compared to older tests.
Peat can you please kme test some cru wear
Always great reviewing and explaining. You were talking about running PB washer knives under water to clean them out. Do you have to dry them or just let them air dry? I have an S90V shaman that I carry everyday on a construction site and definitely want to keep it in good condition.
Hold it under the tap to let water flush out the pivot, spray it out with compressed air, a small squirt of WD-40, wipe away the excess and you're good to go.
In an old video you said if you could only have one knife it would be the American Lawman. What knife would that be now?
Jeez probably still the same. It aint flashy but by gum its effective. A large sebenza is a pretty good ‘it just works’ knife too, if money is no object!
IDK, doesn´t it look like a bushwaker type knife? Just enough belly for skinning. Long enough for cheese and veggies. It seems like the blade was designed with versatility in mind. What say you?
How do you detect your sharpening angel useing your phone??
(Up the butt) dont ask anymore.....it gets just crazy from there dude..... he already showed me.....u don't want to see that...trust me.... literally melted the eyeballs out of my head 'Last Crusade, at the Arch of the Covenant' style!!! Worst night I've had all week.....
The app is called ‘Angle’
Spyderco. Fuck Yeah! Cut test. Fuck Yeah! In Depth Knife Review. Fuck Yeah!
If you carry shamans and are used to moving your fingerout of the way of the nub when closing, the flipper knives are no different. It really irritates me how much people complain about the nub bumping their finger when closing shamans. All i carry anymore is shamans. The amalgam is no different. I agree about the ball bearings though. I love the amalgam but hate bearing pivots. Good video
I could not agree with you more about bearings and hard use tools. I only own one "hard use" folder that is on bearing (buck marksman) and I find that it does get dirty and gritty. It has always perplexed me as to why companies continue to make hard use knives on bearings.
Your Emerson A-100 looks like it was put through the ringer. You still carrying it at work?
I wish you could sharpen my blades! Love your content.
I find 10 minutes to be pretty good. I hava question if you dont mind answering. What diameter sisal rope do you use? Any specific brand? Id like to test the knives i make and compare results
the brand is Grunt and the width is 10mm and it comes sold in prepacked 10meter hanks
@@CedricAda thank you a whole lot
Love me some Cedric and Ada
Love me some Chad Manning positivity 🥰🥰
Hello. Guess I'm back to watching knife videos
Hey, judging from your accent youre from aus. was just wondering where you actually sourced the knife from? Been looking for one and all the websites that currently have stock of it in aus seem a little dodgy :/ Thanks :)
you said "endura class" like you were talking about starship classes m8.
the larger Endura class was instituted by the federation after the Delica class was deemed tactically inferior to the star empire's Griptillian and Osborne class starships, which were much larger and equipped with the star empire's famous "axis-type" deployment system, known for causing not only faster deployment, but faster retreat. Those same classes forced some endura class squadrants to develop their pressure-lock technology in order to combat this advantage.
hahahah excellent
bruh
Great video and review!
I like this review. I always thought the s30v from Taichung came really high hrc but that's just my subjective opinion. You should do a video on which folder you like best for chopping food or using outdoors
I’d buy one if it didn’t have the choil, and washers would be nice also.
My Spydiechef turned this review on and off several times. I'm not sure why.
Hey Pete greetings from Mexico. Would you be interested in selling your Slysz bowie? It's impossible to get one here, been chasing for a couple of years but just ghosts man. You'd really make my year.
I almost pulled the trigger on this monster but I decided I wanted a Keen. I have too many knives. I need help guys.
Very pretty edge, damm you got some knives now, I remember when you were chopn stuff, really done well man. I'm dieing to hear how it sucks to flip, I like the compression lock, it's going good, re: no whining about the flipping. Lol, cool look. Good to revisit as ur skills progress themselves, like ur vids, thanks for takn the time to enlighten us less motivated loser types, re: me 👍s up
Kme me please,
I was interested in this knife , until I found out it had Bearings, I really hope Spyderco doesn't start using them , their knives work fantastic on washers , leave the bearings for the Chinese.
The iphone is sitting on the nut at the distal end , it should be flat on the stone, your angle is probably 14
I would love to have watched this video. Unfortunately, I'm an adult and that's just not possible.
FF9 intro music!? As if i didnt already liked ya all.
Damn, if they had it in a better steel I would have loved it, why have you done this to me
mmmm...interesting knife. Not in my needs range though...
731= sign of the devil????
I hate ball bearings in knives. Instant no sale for me. A completely unnecessary complication and potential point of failure. I get that a certain portion of knife people are obsessed with the action but that shit should be quarantined to high end/pocket jewellery type knives.
How many ball bearing knives have failed on you??? Just curious, since the knife community loves "what if's" "could's" might's" etc...
