  • Zima Blue is one of the best Sci-Fi stories I have ever watched. It has an amazing art style, great voice acting, and a beautiful story. It is completely different from the other episodes of Love Death + Robots as it is more profound - it makes you think about your own life.

To me it's the story of going back to the roots, at the height of complexity seeing that it's unified and simple. Realizing that no matter how hard you strive to perfect or improve, it's still the same monotonous act but it looks different with added layers. In Zima Blue, he realized this and was content with it. Because what would he had done otherwise? An easy way to put this thought into context is the structure of the heroes journey, it plays out so many times in movies, books or games but it can still feel fresh since some key parts have been replaced, but the structure remains. Same thing with level design when it comes to videogames, it's all repetitive but change of scenery or stakes makes you think it's different while it's not. And so is life. And we can't change that. So just live in the now and enjoy it.
Well that's my interpretation at least. Great show.

I didn't have the same takeaway that you did, but I loved hearing you talk about your feeling regarding this episode. I'm glad you clicked with it this way.

@@johnplaydown1975 I can chat about it, but I have reservations. I don't want to be one of those contrarian buttheads that are everywhere on the internet. I like your take, and I'm perfectly comfortable having multiple understandings of the subtexts in media going on in my head at once.

Zima Blu to me will be the best episode of L,D+R for a really simple reason... it focuses on all 3 aspects of the antology, it focuses on the Love of a purpose, it focus on the Death of the current Zima and it focus on his Robotic evolution wich lead him to be more then a robot.
Its a incredibly Deep and Simple story and I love it for it.

Although it is a little polarizing it is a suprisingly deep episode, considering the other episodes it felt much grander and filled with depth.

This reminds me of Marcus Aurelius, one of the few Roman Emperors to die of natural causes.
All his life, this man wanted for nothing of a material nature. He had the best of everything, groomed to rule over the greatest empire in his recent history. His prognosis? It's all game. It's all garbage, it's all worthless.
The only exception to this are the qualities of a sane, sober person, and being the embodiment thereof. Something that can never be bought nor taken by force, something that can be recognized in anyone that chooses to take control of their own thoughts and actions, following their
    "True Nature".
Even if it is by way of scrubbing a pool to the best of their ability.

That was excellently put. I completely agree! Marcus Aurelius is a perfect example.

There’s somwthing inexplicably profound about this episode. There’s meaning behind the meaning that impossible for to fully interpret but I know it’s there.

Really great analysis, thanks for sharing. Another episode of an anthology series that hits me just as hard as Zima Blue is the Second Renaissance episode of The Animatrix, the episode that actually reveals the history of humanity and the machines before the events of the Matrix Trilogy and how The Matrix was created in the first place. It's one of my favorite stories of all time.

Zima Blue isn't the last episode, the one with the astronaut trying to survive is iirc

Maybe it's different for other countries? I keep on double checking what the last episode is but it's still Zima Blue for Season 1 over here.

Wasn't the order of the episodes different for everyone? I think I remember reading something about this once and I don't think Zima Blue was the last episode for me.

I think it's the same. The last episode of season 1 is Zima Blue.

Extremely fun fact: Kevin Micheal Richardson, the voice of Zima Blue, also voices Principal Brian Lewis of American Dad.
