Thinking about starting to record your drumming for TH-cam, Facebook, or Instagram but you’re on a tight budget? Thankfully you can actually capture a really nice sound without breaking the bank.
In today’s lesson, Drumeo’s audio engineer Victor Guidera will take an inexpensive condenser microphone and show you tips and tricks you can utilize in order to get the best sound and most mileage from a single microphone. He’ll cover the perfect microphone placement, track setup in your DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), and different mixing techniques you can use to achieve the sound you want.
Victor uses a Zoom H4N Pro ($200) in this example, however, you can use any similar model! You can even use the Zoom H1 which runs in at just $120.

Extra tip (costs a bit more money but definitely worth the price) :
only use one of the XLR inputs of your Zoom for the backing track (you don't really need to hear that in stereo during tracking anyway) and plug a kick mic on the second (now) available input instead, like an Audix D6 or Shure Beta52 or Shure Beta91.
The kick mic close mic track will add a lot to your overall sound (the kick is always the most lacking when you track drums with only a pair of ambiance mics).
Could not agree more! It's actually even what I imply here... The additional kick mic will also allow more flexibility in placement options for a different stereo onboard mic sound.
Yup ! Place your built-in zoom XY mic in a real overhead position, and add a kick drum mic to that.
It gives you another track in your DAW.

@@ruhurtrubleeding As i said before, overhead is a good start. You can also experiment with other positions such as room far, or just in front of the drums (room mid/close).

Great video. I've been using a Zoom H6 with a kick and snare mic (and a week ago I bought 2 dynamic mics for the toms) and can't recommend it enough. Clear sound and you get to learn a lot about mixing your sound,

All i want to say is, Jared its time to give Victor a pay raise. Audio Engineer's can make you or break you and Victor has played a enormous part to make Drumeo what it is today by mixing with excellence some of the greatest drummers alive. I know for myself I always enjoy hearing how he mixes different drum brands.
So thanks for sharing with us . Side note Victor in your opinion which drum brand is the easiest to mix and is there a drummer or drummers you think has the best drum tuning techniques. Lol I know, I know they are all great but try to name some. 😆
Lol, thanks! Eas(ier)drums to record have been more consistent ones - bearing edges, wood composition, etc.. Sonor Prolite/SQ2, DW Maple, and Yamaha Hybrid Maple come to mind... as for artist's tuning...jeez that's tough and I don't want to leave anyone out...but a few amazing drummers who tuned extremely well were: Jost Nickel, Todd Sucherman, John Blackwell, Antonio Sanchez, Stanley Randolph...Way too many more to list :)
Recordeo thanks and yes todd sucherman pearl masters kit always sounds great do you know if he tunes reso head tighter than batter head. I think he uses masters series right??
I can't quite remember the exact relationship of top/bottom he ended up with... It could have been equal pitch, or slightly higher on the bottoms..

Great video! I have this exact same unit, and I was wondering if you used the capsules at the 90 degree or 120 degree setting, and what each of those settings should be used for. I've also tried using the Zoom as an overhead and putting a D6 on the kick and an SM57 on the snare through the two TRS inputs and it sounds surprisingly convincing.
Depending on how good your room sounds, your drum setup itself, and what you're looking for with the stereo image, I'd mostly recommend the 90degrees...especially when using ONLY the stereo onboard mic. Re: adding an Audix D^ on bass and Shure sm57 on snare....absolutely perfect. Couldn't have offered a better step in the right direction. :)

That’s what I’m using a ZOOM H4N Pro digital recorder on my Yamaha DD-75 electric drums and I’m using a mixer board. I’m also using 2 SIMMONS amplifier speakers and Vic-Firth headphones

Unfortunately I live in Argentina. The Zoom H4N for instance is about 400 USD.
A whole kit of Shures costs around 580. (Not the best ones but some decent Shures).
I have an old M-audio Ultra...

The Sabian Sound Mixer Kit is another great option to record drums for cheap
The handheld recording devices are interesting, however let me offer an alternative solution... If you are not close-mic'ing everything and only capturing a stereo image, then just get a small format analog Mixer and a $100 Condensor and route directly into your PC.
The Zoom et al are great for mobile/on-site recording but drums are what I would call a stationary instrument unlike a guitar where you can walk around and play. The "mobile" aspect is kinda unnecessary for the drums where you are not going to walk around and play at the same time.

You could even route the click into the mixer via RCA and then disable routing the click to the main mix, you'd never even get the click into the recording in the first place, only in your headphones. If you want stereo input, get a cheap XLR splitter and pan at the Mixer or just do it all in the DAW.
Both get you to the same place in the end, but I think I would prefer to have 2 distinct devices (mixer and mic) instead of having everything in one unit. That way in the future I can use the Mixer with other Mics and I can use the Mics with other devices (mixer, interface).

I tried the zoom h4n pro recorder only but it is also picking up mic noises and other home sounds. Is there any way to eliminate it from the sound being recorded??? If anyone knows please reply.....
yeah but how am I gonna mix them? maybe just 2 mics and bass and drums through a mixer and that through my field recorder?

If you are already using an audio interface, why not use some kind of large diaphragm condenser mic? Wouldn't I get better result with some of those?
what is the recorder mounted with? a mic stand?
I’m wondering about recording drums like this but then later using drum replacement software in the mix… and mix the live and the triggered sounds. Seems like it would be pretty easy these days. You could use an iPhone to record the drums… and then dial in samples of the exact same drums being used.

This is such a great device . Are there any additional hidden expenses to this? or can i directly transfer my recordings from the h4n pro to the PC? does this require any mediator ?
No other costs! I even suggest using a free DAW like Audacity or Pro Tools First.
Thank you for a very nice example! What would be your suggestions if I am able to use two or three of them at a time? I would assume that the second one should be around the snare and the other around the kick
I'd recommend to look at adding more external mics, not more zoom recorders. You can even get the Zoom H6, which has the beautiful built-in stereo condenser, as well as 4 more mic inputs! Kick, snare, 2 tom mics, plus the onboard XY mic and now you're rockin!
The reason I am this specific is that I can rent multiple H4 recorders in my university, however I am not too sure about microphones I can get, but thank you for the answer! This will surely help me with my current audio project

this is really helpful! what about bass drum triggers? how would i be able to record the rest of the kit with something like that and use a bass drum trigger?
You may want/need to use either a Zoom with more inputs like the H6, or use an audio interface and a computer to record.
Is the Zoom basically the same technology as the Yamaha EAD10? It sounds good, but far too much cymbals in the mix. Killed the snare though

Great video. I've been thinking about the same concept, since my son is starting to play and is getting pretty good. The only difference in my approach would be to use multiple duplicate tracks of the same stream, with each track having it's own adjustments (boosting different frequencies on different tracks, etc.) I have no clue how it would turn out, as I haven't had time to try it, yet.

Wondering the same thing. The later iPhone versions don't even have a 1/8 headphone jack anymore.
i think you could use a xlr converter or a xlr to 3,5mm cable which you connect to your audio source (smartphone, laptop...)

When I started recording in 1961 (not a typo) we all used only ONE microphone, for the entire group !
Many hit records were recorded that way, LIVE, direct to tape, no overdubs, no EQ.
Today's youngsters seem to think this is pure alchemy.

Thanks! Well, it will capture exactly what your drums sound like acoustically in the room with those sound dampening-devices. The drum recording in general with those devices on your drums would render likely not the best sounding drum recording :)
Technically it is TWO mics, not one. I find it easiest to record straight into the DAW using the Zoom as an interface, this way I can do multiple takes. If you are recording straight to the Zoom, you can record this in four-track mode, adding dedicated kick and snare mics, but then you are going to have to import and line the drum tracks up to the rest.
Any free versions of these plugins?

This method must need a good sounding envirionment... at least for what i tried with one mic the best result i obtained was recording with the mic placed on my right, at the hight desired (closer to the kit more atack and presence, or move it away so you can capture more room ambient), pointing at the snare. in my room sounds better closer to the mic and i like to add a second mic on bassdrum.

Hey Michael! If you plug your phone into the recorder, it will then be recording the drums from the on-board mic and the music from your phone at exactly the same time, which means that when you drop them into your DAW of choice, they'll be synced from the beginning! If you just play to the music without recording the music, you'll have to try to eyeball the music track after in your DAW. This is actually pretty easy, you just slip the music track little bits until it sounds in time with what you played.

Thanks Arthur. On an audio master, I always set the output limiter ceiling at about -1 to -1.5dB. Usually, depending on the type of limiter, there is some signal that leaks through that ceiling and if you set the limit right to 0dBFS, then you run the risk of crossing the true peak 0dBFS. And yes, the double reason is to be 100% sure that when publishing the content, the media playback platform will not push over 0dBFS as well. You would be surprised at how much commercial music pushes past actual 0dBFS in their masters, every single day!
Yeah, I always thought that!! I never really trusted in these platforms hahaha. But I usually set my output level around -0.1 dB just to prevent going above 0dBFS even when leaking. I guess you're more orthodox than me, then, or I may start doing it differently

Although, the Pro Tools software I mentioned to use is Pro Tools First, which is free, as well as I suggest to use an excellent free program with even further functionality, Audacity. Also, you could literally prop this Zoom up with an umbrella or anything you can see in your house. So now there's literally no additional cost other than the Zoom. and again, you could buy the $120 Zoom if the $199 is too much :)
