    In Soccer Coaching Theory (Football to the rest of the world), the coaching theory breaks it down to 4 pillars: Technical, Tactical, Physical and Psychological. Great players excel in all 4 categories - same goes for any sport/activity. Rating players and troubleshooting players to create an improvement program would assess them in all for categories and frmo there the player can gain huge awareness of theomself and truly improve.

    Different class. I watched Nick Faldo at the Muirfield Open. His long iron play was on another level. As he pointed out he was hitting drives 260 to 270 and firing the approach shots to under 15 feet every time. I watched from the green and to see him as a spec in the distance and the ball come thumping down on the green is a sight I will never forget. All done without a range finder just Fanny Suneson on the bag.

    Great interview, lads. That was really interesting what Faldo said at the end about the fact that the tour pros usually only play the smae courses on the tour circuit and how businessmen will have played more of the top courses in the world than the tour pros. Also his perspective on a golf course without the grandstands in place was really interesting.

    I grew up watching those last 6 holes on Sundays at the dinner table with my dad. I wish I realized the greatness I was witnessing back then. My dad would tell me the stories of Lee Trevino and the characters of the day. I remember being a Langer fan because of the way he dressed and Seve because of his swagger. Tom Watson and that whole era just rocked. I still watch golf on Sundays and miss my dad. There's still nothing like the last afternoon of a major.

      My era as well, listening to the St Andrews open on the Saturday, Faldo V Norman, that round was the perfect illustration of how small margins impact golf. I think a ten shot swing where nicks putts that didn’t drop Friday, did and vice versa for Greg. His record in the Ryder cup, legend

    One of the most inspiring things I remember from the 80s and 90s was the Nick Faldo charge. There was a point in the middle of that era (probably '90 when I was 18) when you knew it was coming - and it did. He was the Ian Botham of golf for lads of my generation: more controlled and disciplined than Beefy, of course, but with the same champion's flare. He was simply magnificent.

  • @mattbarker5402
    @mattbarker5402 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Brilliant podcast. I'd argue that though he said Jack he also said that there were only 6-10 golfers who were above everyone back then.Majors are the same as any other 72 hole tournament, the yard stick would be if they played in each others era. Can't see what areas Jack beats Tiger, especially given the standard now.

    • @christophercoleman857
      @christophercoleman857 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure I agree with your conclusion here. Jack, I would say, was a better driver of the ball and a better long iron player. Tiger probably shades short iron play and is definitely better out of sand. Not much to choose between them on the greens. Also it's so difficult to compare different eras. Club and ball construction means you can't compare like with like. It would have been interesting to see what Tiger made of persimmon heads and stock shafts.

    • @mattbarker5402
      @mattbarker5402 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@christophercoleman857 agreed its time specific. However, standards werent as high, i believe many players since Jack would have been better than Jack not jus Tiger. 7000yrd plus courses puts driving back in Tigers hands. There are very few cases where people of the past remain the greatest as the sport evolves and improves because of them. Tiger won't remain the greatest either given enough time.

    • @guyr7351
      @guyr7351 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem is that it is hard to compare era’s. Nick was being a little economical saying only a dozen good strikers of a ball when he played.
      Jack’s record of bringing his game to the majors is unparalleled, the wins, runners up, top ten etc. equipment was not geared and fine tuned as it is now, plus equipment gains have meant those 300+ yards are common and players are hitting greens with 8-PW yet not peppering the pin as he mentioned about proximity to the pin.
      Even good amateurs today exceed pros from 30+ years ago, we used to joke their ball was still rising while ours had landed.
      I like both tiger and Jack, but JN for me is the no1. Tiger has come back from the negativity around his personal life, the press were not slow to sharpen the knives then.
      I would
      Love it if Rick could get Tiger and ask him how the hell did he manage to block the mob that followed him everywhere on a course, to even play half decent golf never mind win?

      Ditto, in my head I was making his swing when I first started playing...still love watching him hit balls in the 90s

      @@bagpussmacfarlan9008 I even did the same thing as him as a kid. One ball would be Seve and the other would be Faldo, my imagination would then take me to the last round of The Open and the final two ball and I’d then play a game between the two for the Claret Jug.

    And, BTW, Jack includes US Amateurs, so in Jack's mind it's 20-18. In Jack's own words, it was the highest level at that level, so if you count Jr. Amateurs, but because they are Jr., a half point, 20-19.5.

    Sir Nick: "...when you're a beginner, you're frustrated and when you're the best in the world, you're still frustrated, you know?"
    Rick: "No."

    This guy transformed himself from a laughing stock into the toughest competitor of the 80s/90s era. His final round at the 1990 Masters is the definition of determination.

      You could add the final round at the ‘96 Masters and his last open at Muirfield to that list. Some of the best iron shots under pressure ever hit are in those rounds, eg 2 iron into 13th in ‘96 and the 3 iron into 18th at Muirfield in ‘92 (amongst others).

    Got this Hollywood script. Kid from the hood picks up clubs age 14 and plays Ryder Cup at 20. Yeah, right. And beats Jack! Ok, ok, does he win Wimbledon too?

    What a totally fantastic doco - well done guys - next Ian Woosnam. Being an aussie, growing up with Greg Norman, David Graham, IBF, Seve, Nick Faldo, Nick Price, Ian Woosnam and co, what an era....see if you can get some of the others for a truly international footprint - what a doco you did about behind the scenes at Augusta - well done team rick!!
