      Now I would never try to make some like objective argument she should be #1 or anything, but whenever it gets brought up like who might have been the most beautiful women over the course of the series, I have never understood that Gilly never really seems to get the slightest mention at all. I thought she was super adorable the first episode we were introduced to her (well, AFTER the screaming of her giving birth, anyway lol), granted it may not be entirely unrelated that Sam's also one of the characters I've related most to in the whole show. But I mean at the very least, you look up regular pictures of the actress, she's pretty damn hot in "normal clothes", although I always thought she was very cute looking in her character's rough Wildling get up. (ironically, I felt like the most awkwardly odd she ever looked was in Sam's sister's "pretty dress" when he takes Gilly back to his home)

    I was rooting for Thorne, too, at this point. He got *me* pumped up with his speech. I like Tormund & Ygritte as individual Wildlings, but had to keep reminding myself of why they were there, and so had to be on the side of the _Watchers on the Wall._ Good stuff, once again, guys. 😊❤️
    btw...I love your description of Ygritte. It's exactly why I loved her from almost the very beginning. She's tough, but feminine. Thanks for pointing that out.

    • @kevinw712
      @kevinw712 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      While I think it's perfectly fair to say that Allister Thorne was pretty much on the ball with/for the audience for this whole episode, and that you can respect or even LIKE what he's doing, but I certainly don't think that necessarily maybe totally makes up for himself for all before now. The biggest thing really is just how friggin PETTY he was with Jon, literally right from the start. Using what degree of 'authority' he had over Jon for little to no other reason than his own enjoyment because of, I dunno, whatever weird goddamn complex he had. That's why that one moment is so impactful and meaningful later on once Jon is elected the new Lord Commander. He brings up the new latrine to be built and it immediately goes to Thorne's face, but no, Jon appoints Thorne the lead Ranger because of his skills and experience as a fighter, rightfully so. that's exactly the sort of situation in the past where if it was the other way around Thorne's definitely making Jon dig the new shit hole, but Jon's gonna make his duty decisions based on logic and merit because the very last thing that Jon Snow is is petty.

    As someone who was around when the original season 6 and 7 reviews were coming out, I'd love it if you guys redid them because I feel like you've always been fantastic but now you guys have just found your footing in such an amazing way, just the way you all bounce off each other and the witty remarks and the way you guys genuinely show so much care about what you're talking about, well it's always been like that actually haha but still definitely re-do season 6 and 7. Not to mention the channel was much smaller back then lol

    Isn't it great that the lesson Jon learned with Karl Tanner, the way he killed the Thenn was the same way that Howland saved Neds life with Arthur Dayne
    And ned regrets it, feels it was dishonorable, but Jon knows you gotta do what you gotta do
    And Jon wouldn't have been raised by ned to learn this if Howland didn't do that hahaha
    Came full circle

    • @Brandonhayhew
      @Brandonhayhew 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      IMO: Fuck honor and all of it's bullshit.

    • @KaladinVegapunk
      @KaladinVegapunk 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Brandonhayhew in life or death, definitely, do what you gotta do
      But I mean, the legacy of tywin and ned after they die shows that neds honor, while failing him politically and short term, helped his family long term by having the north super loyal to his kids, willing to fight to put them back in power, hell, the grand northern conspiracy comes from the neds honor, manderly especially
      But Tywin, his brutality and lack of honor helped short term, his family got a fuck ton of power..but as soon as he gets ganked noone gives a fuck about the family, noone is loyal at all
      Ruling by fear works til you can't be a threat anymore
      But being honorable and loved gets more people long term, it's a main theme that Martin is analyzing
      So there's arguments for both, depending if you give a shit about your legacy or just want to live it up and have power for your lifetime

    Has anybody else ever noticed that D&D intentionally made the clothes of the Wildlings and the Black Watch blend together at night so you couldn't tell who was who? Throughout the episode I couldn't tell, beyond the main characters, which person was on which side. I am sure that was deliberate so that when the episode ended you wouldn't be able to guess who was winning.

    Honestly I prefer this to Blackwater, I'm way more invested in the wildlings and characters at the wall than kingslanding. Blackwater was before Davos became one of my favourite characters so the only ones I really cared about were Tyrion, Sansa and Bronn, I mean I hated Joffrey and Cersei and didn't really care for Stanis so I wouldn't be overly bothered with either outcome of the battle.

    This show really makes me question the idea of love and duty. They make love sound like the enemy of duty, which it is, but it's not entirely a bad thing. The duty of the Night's Watch is to protect the Seven Kingdoms from the White Walkers (as that was their original mission), but now that duty has been twisted into fighting against their own kind now. They say that emotions get in the way but they only apply that to love and caring, focuing more on being hateful which is also an emotion, one that clouded the judgement of Allister and Olly to kill Jon, their leader.
    Even with Lyanna and Rhaegar, they fell in love and everyone overreacted to something that didn't really concern them. Their love posed no true threat to the realm, everyone just made it that way because they weren't getting what they wanted. The rulers of Westeros say that everything they do is for the greater good of their people when it's really a lie to hide their true reasons.
    Like magic, duty may have been a necessary thing in the world, but now it's become the true enemy. It's not about the people or even the greater good, it's just about making the small percent happy and getting what they want. The duty of westeros is the wheel and the wheel needs to be destroyed to usher in something new and better.

    Watchers on the Wall is hands down my favorite episode of the whole series. It's just so well done, and it was translated from the books wonderfully.

    I'm thinking that badass butcher might have been a callout to Donal Noye, the baratheon blacksmith up there, the one with the classic line about the brothers, Bob is the true steel, stannis the iron, and renly the brass

    I always assumed that butcher was three-fingered Hob. The way he walked into the kitchen so casually, he probably swaggers in like that every night, even when all he's cutting is turnips.

    What I think is the most ironic is Thorne was sent to the wall after Bob's Rebellion for being a Targ loyalist, fought for Rhaegar haha
    That's why he hates Ned Stark, & that's why he's such a dick to Jon
    ..and yet, if only he knew Jon was Rhaegars son

    I've been watching these episode re- capps of yours for a few days now, and these are excellent! I personally don't have anyone to discuss GOT with so these are great! The cinematic battle scenes give us a realistic view into medieval warfare. Battle of the Bastards will always be my favorite episode. That heavy sign Jon makes as the Boltons charge him says it all. So beautifully shot and the placement of actors to bring that battle to life takes my breath away. Thanks for these recaps.
    Westeros sucks.
