The way I see the husband thing: He's also dead, having been killed in the war. But he died an "honest" death, for want of a better word, so he's passing on to...wherever. But before he goes, he visits his family, who aren't able to pass on with him, due to the "tainted" manner of their deaths. One last goodbye.
He clearly says "the war's not over" and he has to go back. "Sometimes I bleed" means he's dying again and again. There is no magical reunion of the family in the afterlife, everyone is stuck to their place of death.
I always took it as he was finally getting ready to cross over, and made a final visit to his family to say goodbye expecting to find them alive and well. But then he was so traumatized by what he found that it set him back again, and so he was doomed to return to the battlefield where he died instead.
The mother went after the kids while they were sleeping. She kiIIed Nicholas first. He didn’t wake up so he was unaware of what happened. That’s why he kept denying that the mother had done anything to them. Anne woke up during the attack on her brother. She was aware of what was happening when the mother went after her. Unfortunately she was too young to understand that they were dead. She just knew her mother had harmed her & her brother. That’s why she kept saying their mother had done something horrible “that day” & was so angry & confrontational with the mother. Also the reason Grace had migraines was because she shot herself in the head.
Although I like the idea, I'm not sure her migraines were caused from shooting herself in the head. She told the workers that silence was something they (or she rather) valued highly in the house, which is why they didn't have anything that made a lot of noise like a telephone, radio etc. The only noisy thing left was the piano which came with the house, but she told them not to allow the children to play on it as it set off her migraine.
@@AtlantisTheLostEmpire Maybe the reason they "value silence" is because they have no electricity (abandoned house wouldn't have service, so no phone or radio), and she was rationalizing the things that they lost once they had all died. Headaches + no phone, no radio, no lights sounds to me like the results and after effects of the murder suicide. As for playing the piano, her believing that any noise was the cause of her headaches just sounds like more rationalizing on her part.
It was a bit of an ilogic assumotion. Why ghosts? The first thing you would think of when you hear about someone who doesn't want to be exposed to daylight is vampires
The sound in this movie is incredible. Saw it in theaters when it came out and I am pretty sure the sound spooked me more than the visuals. And I love the trio of ghosts that are annoyed that the family is not figuring it out.
All of this movie's production values are top tier. The filmmakers well knew how important they are to the 'effectiveness' of a movie of this type. Thanks for your great comment from another person who notices those details!
21:26 most emotive part in the film in my opinion- the daughter who has been resenting the mother the entire film finally embraces her to the mothers relief, only to get the twist at the end to rip it apart. Makes sense as the daughter knew she was being killed by her mom but the son was killed in his sleep so never knew what happened & is why he is warmer to her
I really really thought you’d get this right away but I’m pleasantly surprised you didn’t! We all deserve to experience a twist ending organically now and then!
My family would watch this movie on DVD literally every month. It’s one of my favorite scary movies. Whenever I talk about this movie no one has ever heard of it. I’d say it’s a classic lol
I _loved_ your reaction! Great insight about the meaning of the closed gates/bars! 👋👋👋 This is my favorite horror movie!❤ - Grace's constant migraines are a clue to what happened to her. - "stop breathing" is also an expression we hear very often alluding to how the children were killed - Grace's scream right at the beginning is not an ordinary nightmare. It's the realisation of what she has done to her children and herself. - Nicole Kidman wanted to quit during rehearsals, as playing Grace gave her nightmares. - When the wandering Charles approaches Grace in the fog his footsteps produce a sound not unlike the clanking of chains - which Anne had previously mentioned is a tell-tale trait of ghosts. - In the scene where Grace is loading the shotgun for the first time, she can be seen pausing in a recollective moment after she slams the breach shut. This is most likely due to her faint realization of deja vu, most likely alluding to her suicide by using the same gun
Once you rewatch this film, that opening scene makes so much sense. She is corced to repeat that entire night over and over again every night until the 3 other ghosts came. The cycle was broken and they could finally be at peace. As for the husband moment, I found that to be for Nicole Kidman's character to let go of him and accept that he wasn't going to come back home. So yeah. This is a perfect film in my opinion. I love it so much.
It's a great film, and it drives me crazy how everyone goes on and on about the twist in The Sixth Sense, but noone ever talks about this movie that did it at least as well.

Yeah, one of the greatest ghost movies ever, if not THE best. Bro, if you like this, you will love "What lies beneath" (2000), hope you give it a try someday, patreon people, please do your magic!
Can't believe this film is 23 yo. Feels like yesterday that my bestie and I got high and went to see it when we were 14 (!) We laughed hysterically at all the jump scares. Luckily the theatre was almost empty 😂
I'm gonna copy paste what I've said about this film elsewhere; As for why Grace when mad, there's actually a good amount of hints in the movie that are easier to catch on a rewatch. 1: She has intense migraines. The movie never says if they're stress induced or for some other reason but either way, they indicate she's already pressured with pain very often 2: her children have a rare condition where they can't tolerate light, causing Grace to CONSTANTLY be in fear for their lives and having to be almost OCD levels of control over the doors and windows in the house as well as needing to constantly know where her children are and if they're safe. This alone is enough to give anyone anxiety but she's also got migraines on top of this. 3: she refers to the house as "this prison" when speaking to her husband, letting know that she hates living this way, unable to really leave the house because she's so terrified for her children's safety while they are also the cause for her having to be so controlling over the light in the house as well as the servants so they don't accidentally expose her children. 4: Her husband, her only real emotional support, has left for the war and never returned, meaning she is effectively alone in having to deal with this emotionally. Yes she had servants, but their job is not to question their mistress' mental health. So they wouldn't have been supporting her in the way she needed due to the class difference 5: Combine the fact that Grace is extremely controlling due to all these circumstances, and then throw in that Anne is VERY defiant and often butts heads with her mother and she is growing older and reaching teenage years. Meaning now Grace has to deal with her "perfect little angel" daughter going through mood swings and becoming rebellious, which directly conflicts with Grace's controlling nature. a Controlling nature that came from trying to keep the very children now fighting with her ALIVE. And all this conflict becomes literal life and death for her as far as her children goes. 6: Her only real source of comfort is the Bible, meaning she obviously grew up extremely religiously and this in the early 1900s. So she comes from a very strict and dogmatic background. Which also doesn't give her much help in terms of her mental state because the Bible essentially just preaches "Be a good person and you'll go to heaven" but doesn't really give much advice on how to deal with... ALL of this. For whatever reason, Grace had a nervous breakdown. The movie never gives a reason for what was the final straw and what finally caused her to crack, but something just went wrong that day. She flew in a blind rage and, just like she attacked Anne when she thought she was the old woman, she physically lashed out at her children. I don't think she EVER intended to kill them. I think something inside her snapped and just caused her to lash out violently without truly thinking or even being fully aware of what she was doing until it was too late. When Anne is being angry at the table and refuses to deny there was a boy in the room and starts hyperventilating, Grace demands that she "stop breathing like that" and when Anne doesn't stop Grace becomes angry and demand "Stop breathing". You can see Grace's anger and Anne's anger flaring up in this scene. in this case it ends with Grace telling Anne to go to her room, and afterwards punishes her for THREE DAYS until Anne will admit she lied. Whatever caused Grace to have a nervous breakdown that day, I would believe it would be something similar. A child crying a little too loudly. Anne talking back a little too forcefully. The children making too much noise while she was having a migraine. SOMETHING happened that caused all this pressure to finally make something break.
Anne says the servents left and then "it happened"... it's possible the servents left and Grace (on some level) realized she couldn't handle the house and kids on her own.
Elaine Cassidy who played the mute girl doesn’t do much but is actually an outstanding actress. She was great in a lead role in “The Fingersmith”, one of the best made-for-television movies I’ve seen.
Since you enjoyed this, you should definitely watch "Identity" by James Mangold, starring Ray Liotta, John Cusack and Amanda Peet. It's also very atmosheric being set in a spooky motel during a rainy night.
20:27 Just wanted to say. As a kid i very often ventured into the woods. With friends or alone.... At day, at night. Being foggy or clear. No matter what. The forest was my and my friends playground.
My opinion is that the father died in the war and had the opportunity to say goodbye to his family on his way to heaven whilst they remained in purgatory.
Except that doesnt make sense. His children were murdered. They didn't do anything wrong and according to their beliefs, only children who hadn't been baptized stay in purgatory/limbo. So it would've only been the mother at the house. It also doesnt explain the help, because it was only stated that they died, but not how. I think they could leave if they want to, but they just don't want to, so they don't.
Never even heard of The Others??! Man, I grew up watching this, and the bit with the old woman communing with the daughter while in the dress scarred me deeply! But it's such a good movie, and I love the twist. Sometimes feels like it's so underrated, so I'm happy to see more folks watching this.

In Spain, The Sixth Sense was released in theaters shortly before The Others, so unfortunately many guessed the ending, including me. It's a shame because the movie is very good.
Before getting into the reaction, I worry that you watched the entire movie with a faulty sound setup. It seems that all the dialogue and sound effects were only on the left channel, which you even noted at the beginning. The score seemed to be the only thing you heard in both channels.
I always thought the dad came back home but wasnt expecting to see any of them there. Then he somehow worked out what she did and couldnt bare staying there anymore

I always saw it as a "purgatory" on the loop and the husband leaving the family is just an apparition of the event that triggered the mom to off them and not an actual ghost. Since even the staff is not happy about him being there. They knew history is about to repeat itself and the loop will restart. The seance finally broke it though.
I love this film, not least because it is one of the few horror films with a (kind of) happy ending! Not conventionally happy, obviously, but the kids get to go outdoors without fear and Grace comes to terms with her actions. Who knew that there was personal growth in the afterlife?!
When you said something about, why would you stay hanging around in this house? I've always thought about how crap it would be to be a ghost, stuck in a house. Ghosts don't exist.
The Others is a very good film, but it is undoubtedly much better because of its plot twists. Maybe at that time there weren't so many twists and turns, so it was very impactful.
the fan theory is she received the letter about her husbands death in the war and that's how she went mad and killed herself and the kids. The husband being dead was able to visit them but he was moving on while they were staying in their own purgatory
Before I start the video, I’m going to guess that you figure it out, and probably pretty early. But I think you’ll still really appreciate how they lay it out
The way I see the husband thing:
He's also dead, having been killed in the war.

Exactly.

He clearly says "the war's not over" and he has to go back. "Sometimes I bleed" means he's dying again and again. There is no magical reunion of the family in the afterlife, everyone is stuck to their place of death.

The Others has one of the greatest twists in all of cinema history!
It's build so masterfully.
This is one of the most well written and well executed movies ever. I was blown away the first time I saw it, I didn't see the twist coming at all.
James was so close to calling the ending early on, it made me nervous. 😂
"OH SNAPS! THIS IS DURING A SEANCE!!" Favorite part right there! lol
"They are living in a house full of ghosts" ... this made me chuckle hard
I love watching people react to this for the first time. One of the best twists.
Husband likely died in the war and came to visit his family before moving on.
For those of us old enough to remember, the “I am your daughter” was part of the commercial for this movie. Just that line alone freaked me out.
And then Scary Movie 3 commandeered it. 😂
That line made me want to watch it and glad I got to experience it in theaters
A high quality gothic ghost story. Love this film and I think it’s one of Nicole’s best performances.
One of my favorites. I just love the way it's told in such an "other side of the coin" way, yet it somehow still feels traditional.
