Those were real bees during the kiss scene. Tony Todd had a dental dam, so they wouldn't go down his throat. Even so, he still got stung 27 times (fetching a 'sting' bonus for his paycheck). Virginia Madsen was a trooper, because she's legit allergic and could have died - sometimes it took 20+ minutes to get all the bees off her face. @@JamesVSCinemaClive Barker is a goddamn legend. Both in the literary sense and film sense. Now that you watched Candyman YOU GOTTA watch Nightbreed and lord if illusions
@@aldokurti3272 Yes, yes, a thousand times yes!! Clive Barker is the master of the subversive in this genre. He really gets to the very crux of the classic horror trope, which is the fear that subjugating women will lead to a revolt of traditional patriarchal roles. So much of his writing reflects this, as well as the idea of traditional sexual roles, in general.
Candyman is definitely one of the most underrated slashers, as a character and a film. Absolutely love Tony Todd's performance. When he speaks, he doesn't really frighten. He hypnotizes. He seduces. He speaks like a lover you've always known but never met. A real classic horror.
Despite all the flaws with this film, I do think it's an incredible piece of horror filmmaking, filled with meaning and social commentary. A flawed gem; A masterpiece in my eyes.
For me, it's a good message on the dangers of mob rule. As long as Candyman's legend stays relevant , Evil will continue to be committed by good people. (I hope that makes sense)
one of my all time favorite horror movies. i even have the movie poster hanging in my entertainment room. Tony Todd was cast perfectly for this role. the way he grunts when gutting people really adds to the terror.
Yo, I realize Halloween is over but can we PLEASE get this man to watch The Substance??? It has some of the best visual storytelling I’ve ever seen, and I think James would simultaneously love and hate it.
One of the truly rare horror films that still scares me to this day. It sucks that it doesn't get the same prestige as many of the other heralded classics, but it's a genuine horror masterpiece from start to finish. Tony Todd is the voice of a generation.
That's the Cabrini Green projects. The movie Cooley High takes place there. Those projects are also in the beginning and end credits of the show "Good Times". Its always been assumed the Evans Family lived there, even tho it's never mentioned in the show. Plus the creator of the show (and Coolie High) Eric Monte grew up there.

This is an awesome film. Tony Todd is fantastic as Candyman. It’s awesome to see you watch this film James, hope you’re doing well. Have a great rest of your day and have a great weekend. Take care!
I remember going to a local video store to rent this on a VHS tape. They had a mirror there with a carboard cut out of him. It said something about being brave enough to look in the mirror and say his name. I was 13 and you better believe I wasn't going to do it! Glad you enjoyed the film! Tony Todd is Candyman just like Robert Englund is Freddy Krueger. The second one is pretty good to. I always recommend The Changeling as a classic horror movie that is very atmospheric. Definitely creepy in certain spots. They don't make movies like that anymore.
Candyman does such a great job at simultaneously feeling like a classic horror staple and a modern “elevated” black horror movie and sits comfortably at the top tier of both categories.
This, Tales from the Hood, Vampire in Brooklyn. Lots of great Urban Horror popped up in the early 90's. Candyman is his own thing, too. He's not as Commercial in Sprit stores as freddy, Michael, Jason, Leatherface, Chucky. But he's as well known. Don't believe me, do the Candyman thing in a mirror in a public space. People freak.
I saw this in the theatre, Clive Barker was a great writer, Philip Glass is a great composer. Other Clive Barker movies - Hellraiser, Nightbreed, Rawhead Rex, Lord of Illusions.
"Is that like a clay face, or-” Tony Todd straight up had bees in his mouth. They used a dental dam to keep them out of his throat. The bees were newly hatched, and couldn't fly or sting. For that shot. But throughout filming Todd was stung 23 times. And earned a $1K bonus per sting.
Clive Barker doesnt mess around. Theres a reason this felt like Hellraiser. 🤣 Now you gotta see Barker's NIGHTBREED (directors cut). Think of it as monster / slasher X-Men
Easily one of my favorite horror movies. Such an interesting exploration of the importance and power of myth. Would also suggest reading the short story, The Forbidden, by Clive Barker. Think the filmmakers did an excellent job of revamping it for an American audience.
I think there’s something about how the candyman legend echos some elements of the Emmitt Till story and other brutalities. How those stories took root in the some communities but “forgotten” or lost by others. And how the spirit of trauma and tragedy lives on to keep producing rage and violence where the story exists. So the candyman craves Helen, not simply as a sacrifice for the angry blood lust but as a vehicle for spreading the story back to where it was forgotten, in the privileged communities and academia, where the pain of remembrance has long been unjustly absent and unfelt. Which the movie itself did by dumping this mind-worm of urban legend horror into the mainstream demographic of 90s horror fans. Amazing storytelling.
Tony Todd is great in the 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead. It's still worth a look even having done the original last year, because some of the characters are changed around a bit and makes for a good compare-contrast.
Candyman is one of my favorite horror films - one of the first bloody slashers I ever watched And I'm not a slasher person at all eep!). I totally agree! He's one of the best and most brutal. And Tony Todd - WHAT a performance. So strong, and handsome, and tragic. So GD compelling as the antagonist. LOVE him. Thanks for this! 😀
Clive Barker is as good as Stephen King. We need more horror movies of Barker's stories. This was really one of those movies I saw as teen(barely) when I really got into horror and it really made an impression to me like a Bram Stoker's Dracula, Pet Semetary 2 and Alien 3. To this day, Candyman scares me. I saw it as a kid. The fact that he was A. Black and B. In Chicago, where I lived, it made him more of a realistic threat in my child mind. His voice gives me chills the first time he says, Helen.
Tony Todd is a horror legend. If he had only done this one film, he would have still been an icon. I've loved this movie since it came out and always wondered how nobody else has ever made an iconic black movie monster. Tales From the Hood was fantastic but it was an anthology. You should definitely give that a watch when you can.
Don't worry, the line up scene of the guys all saying "I hear you're looking for Candy man, bitch" is a funny scene. I remember seeing this movie as a kid and for years, even nowadays, me and a friend say that quote to each other and always laugh. 😂
“You said it was our secret! You lied!” “Kid, I got jumped!”😂😂😂 The fact that this was in an urban area screwed me up when I was a child in the 90s watching it. I’m from Brooklyn. This movie scared me so bad because I felt that Candyman could get me at any time.
This is one of Clive Barkers most haunting novels. This film is a great adaptation. Tony Todd obviously iconic as Candyman. And Cabreeney Green is a great location and adds to the haunting nature in this film.
This is one of the horror classics of the 90's. The remake was not too shabby but this is the one to go to. Tony Todd's voice is so amazingly deep, seducing and threatening.

Tony F'ing Todd! Candyman himself, the mortician in Final Destination franchise, and the henchman in the original Crow, Tony's all up in spooky season! Also, my favorite Star Trek guest star of all time, sorry horror legend Jeffrey Combs the "Old Jake" episode of DS9 puts him over the top in my book. Love Tony Todd!
The Candyman franchise is one of my all time favorite horror series. The Candyman (2021) movie is a direct sequel to this and is an extremely underrated masterpiece, imo. Candyman Farewell II Flesh is really good, 3 is really underwhelming especially compared to all the others.
It reminds you of Hellraiser because Clive Barker wrote the novels and directed Hellraiser The original story is set in London as was Hellraiser but they dubbed out the British accents for US audiences
One of the best horror movies ever. I definitely thought the requel/reboot they did in 2021 was worth watching. It had incredible direction and cinematography. I hope you check it out too!
This movie absolutely traumatized me at the age of seven, but I wouldn't stop watching it ctfu. My favorite is the sequel Fair Well to the Flesh, it dives deeper into the backstory!
Genuinely love this movie, but it will never fail to disturb me... honestly, I think the immediate sequel and the Peele sequel are both pretty good, but nothing tops this one, it's perfect
Now you know why Tony Todd has long lines at Horror Conventions, with all kinds of women. He's like Dracula in this. Also, 2 more Sequels with Todd as candyman, plus the newest sequel/ remake.
I LOVE Candyman what a great film. Tony Todd is so imposing with such and amazing voice. You connected the dots with Hellraiser, both are stories by Clive Barker. This was kind of elevated horror before elevated horror, it's smart with themes that reach past just violence and gore, great setting (they really shot in cabrini green) great cinematography (those ariels!) and AMAZING music by Philip Glass (he elevates anything he's part of go watch Koyaanisqatsi it's amazing.) I love how the first half of the movie is Helen (and us) learning Candyman's myth/legend and the second half we are watching Helen's myth/legend play out. I highly recommend before watching any of the kind of cheap Candyman cash in sequels you go STRAIGHT to Candyman (2021) it's the true legacy sequel and it's great HIGHLY recommended if you liked this film.
I worked across the street, and played some hoops, right by Cabrini Greens (the projects in this movie). It is sealed up, locked up and left to rot. I def. think James should check out the 2021 Candyman, an interesting look at gentrification as well as doing some clever flips to the original film (specifically the intro). Music is also fantastic for both films.
It’s not said till the sequel, but Candyman’s real name is Daniel Robitaille (pronounced tie. I thought it was tail till I heard it). The murder of Ruthie Jean is based on the real life murder of Ruthie May McCoy. Of course they use McCoy for Anne-Marie’s last name. Those were real gang members that were accusing the girls of being cops. The producers made a deal with them to let them be in the movie to ensure the cast and crew’s safety. Surprisingly it seems razor blades have only been claimed to be in candy _apples_ in real life, not chocolate or wrapped candy like this and other things have shown. Poison, nails, and pieces of glass in candy, but not razors.
My late Halloween recommendation: Häxan - and you have choice of silent from Sweden 1922 or the 1968 edit with William Burroughs narrating. Also, fun to project on a wall at a spooky party
Oh FUCK YES!!! One of my favourite horror movies! I have a lot of feelings about this one. The location the movie was shot in were real apartments that people actually lived in at the time, which is horrific to think about and drills in the message of the movie all the more. There is a degree of separation there as we're seeing the entire movie from Helen's point of view which might not have aged the best these days, but I still think it's a powerful film about someone so wrapped up in their privilege trespassing into a world she thinks she'll be fine in specifically BECAUSE of that privilege. That's not why I like it, it's just an interesting part of the film which I think a lot of people **looks directly at the very bad remake** want to write off as just a "white saviour" story and don't want to look at it beyond that surface level and actually engage with it. Tony Todd is the man. And Candyman may actually be my favourite supernatural killer character both just for style but also for the deeper meaning wrapped up in his existence.
Hey James! Love your videos! I know October is over but I was wondering, do you watch foreign films/non-english language films? I highly recommend you watch "When Evil Lurks", its an Argentinian horror movie that came out last year. I have a few gripes with it but over all its fantastic, I loved it and it did get a bit of notoriety overseas! Ofc Im biased because its from my country but I'd love you to watch it! Anyways, I love your analysis and hwo you comment on the more technical aspect of movie-making while you watch! Cheers!
Maaan, imagine sleeping on how beautiful Kasi Lemmons (Bernadette) is. Kasi is also the director of Eve's Bayou, which hopefully you can check out someday as it is also a great film. I felt a little bad for Helen, but i mean, she didn't have to keep pursuing the story after all the warnings. Love this film though despite some of the issues with it
Candyman and Pinhead (from Hellraiser) are the most inexplicably sexy horror villains. My guess is it's the voice. Although Tony Todd is sexy regardless. 🤣 This is also the fist horror movie I can remember from my childhood that really went out of its way to make itself interesting to look at.
"Why haven't we had multiple Candy men." We have. There are 3 sequels. Although only the last one really is a story sequel to the original. The 2 middle ones still have Tony Todd as Candyman, but terrorizing other locations. I don't think they have any real story relevance. I thought I remembered hearing at the time that Candyman (2021) was kinda lackluster, but its wikipedia page indicates that it was fairly well liked, so maybe I'm misremembering it or have conflated it with another movie.
Heeeellleeeen! I love Tony Todd's voice in this movie. It's so silky and deep and menacing but also kinda sexy??? Only Clive Barker can make a serial killer sexy. Also, you'll never catch me lacking by saying the Candyman's name 5 times. Absolutely not
I think you would enjoy reading 📖 clive barker ( 🎬 Candyman/Lord of Illusions/Hellraiser etc ) Imajica is my all time favorite book ❤ Thanks for years of great reactions
Holy crap. I've been watching this move since the 90s, and i not once noticed the thing about Trevor putting his ring on her hand. Wow. You're observant AF!!!!
Thanks for extending Spooky Movie Season! I would LOVE for you to watch a little known gem called The Last Exorcism (2010) It's an amazing movie Blair Witch style. Most DEFINITELY worth the watch.
even before this movie came out being a little shit ass and rolling through cabrini-geen back then was a mission, but once this movie dropped it def gave the place a wild vibe before it all got tore down.
Ok, you have to do the sequel now. It is really good and i don’t want to give away anything here but you won’t be disappointed, it does go a bit more into the social commentary aspect of the story.

I love how the first half of the movie is Helen (and us) learning Candyman's myth/legend and the second half we are watching Helen's myth/legend play out. I highly recommend before watching any of the kind of cheap Candyman cash in sequels you go STRAIGHT to Candyman (2021) it's the true legacy sequel and it's great HIGHLY recommended if you liked this film.
Candyman and Hellraiser were both based on Clive Barker stories. Lots of similar thematic elements.
I have lived in the Chicago suburbs, my entire life, let me tell you, my friend, Cabrini Green was terrifying, even without candy man😂
I was waiting for a realization that this being one of your mom's favorites is buck wild lol.
James that's really bees in Tony Todd's mouth. Apparently they paid him something like $1k per bee to get the shot. Crazy!
The only time I've ever seen a killer start from the groin is American Horror Story: Roanoke and it was just as brutal.
I could watch Tony Todd chewing the scenery all day...
What's really crazy is that Trevor stayed in that apartment after what happened to Bernadette.
Oh man....this is a good one!
Candyman was the last of the supernatural movie killers before everyone got interested in dinosaurs and natural disasters.
Love this movie, and a fan of Tony Todd.
"Why haven't we had multiple Candy men."
We have.
Absolutely not
You should really look into Cabrini Green (the filming location, before it was demolished) - it's its own horror story
I think you would enjoy reading 📖 clive barker ( 🎬 Candyman/Lord of Illusions/Hellraiser etc )
Imajica is my all time favorite book ❤ Thanks for years of great reactions
Holy crap. I've been watching this move since the 90s, and i not once noticed the thing about Trevor putting his ring on her hand. Wow. You're observant AF!!!!
Happy you found something new!!
Next Clive Barker based movie...Lord of Illusions
............It would be VERY interesting to see you watching/commenting the French movie MARTYRS...................
There are more Candyman films. 2 and 3. and a remake/reboot/sequel thing a few years ago. Oddly, I've never seen any of the following films.
Thanks for extending Spooky Movie Season! I would LOVE for you to watch a little known gem called The Last Exorcism (2010) It's an amazing movie Blair Witch style. Most DEFINITELY worth the watch.
Great suggestion!
even before this movie came out being a little shit ass and rolling through cabrini-geen back then was a mission, but once this movie dropped it def gave the place a wild vibe before it all got tore down.
Ok, you have to do the sequel now. It is really good and i don’t want to give away anything here but you won’t be disappointed, it does go a bit more into the social commentary aspect of the story.
Virginia Madsen rocks!
The film is based in Chicago. ,,,and no it was not a rubber mask. Tony Todd had real bees in his mouth.
haha i rmemebr my brother showed me this when i was 10 years old, and i was scrared shitless lol
