The Andy Griffith Show - 40 Acre Backlot Today

  • In 1976 the old 40 acre backlot was demolished when it was sold for development into an industrial park. It was on this lot where the outdoor set for Mayberry, NC, once existed. It was also home to Gomer Pyle USMC, Hogan's Heroes, Gone With the Wind, King Kong, Tarzan. It is located in Culver City, California at the foot of Blair Hill in the Baldwin Hills. Ballona Creek was the border on the south side off of Jefferson Blvd. Today, nothing is left of the old backlot, everything is gone but one can walk around and imagine what once was.

    Can't believe they destroyed the 40 acre backlot. So much movie and TV history that people would have loved to tour if still here. Gone with the Wind, Hogan's Heroes, Andy Griffith, Gomer Pyle, Bonanza, Star Trek, King Kong, etc

    The Andy Griffith show still enriches life today. The greatest TV show ever produced, by a long shot.
    So thankful to have the first 5 years (could care less about the last three) on DVD.

    I was and still am a huge fan of Andy Griffith. I still break my neck to watch it on TV today ,everyday at 3:00. It is so sad to see all the studios gone and paved into an industrial park. You can change the scene but you can never take the memories. Thanks for sharing,

    When I visited LA for the first time a few years ago, I managed to find Franklin Canyon where they filmed some of the outside scenes including the opening. It looks VERY much the same today as it did 60 years ago except the lake is a little smaller. Glad to know somebody cared enough to save the land from development.

      Mount Airy NC is the 'real' Mayberry. A museum and you can even stay in the house Andy grew up in. A very idyllic setting. There's even a Pilot Mountain (Mt. Pilot) a few miles away.

    Thanks for taking the time to do this. I live in NC, south of Greensboro, just a short drive from Mount Airy, Andy's birthplace. I've loved the show since childhood. And I never tire of seeing the re-runs. It is indeed sad that progress took away so many landmarks that we wish now that we could visit, but simply no longer exist. Thanks again for sharing that, and the time and effort you put into it.

    • @Realstuffadventures

      +gravytrain416 Thank you for watching, only wish I could have walked the lot and photographed it before it was demolished in 1976. But, it was still special just to be albe to walk around and know that I was at the same place.

      +SandhillDigger , Yes that would have been awesome to have been able to do something like that when it was still there, but it's like a lot of things. We don't think about it the possibility of it being destroyed some day and no longer having a chance to see it. I'm like you; I've been to places, and just being there and knowing what was there at one time that's now gone, it's a sense of nostalgia. Thanks again :)

    As an Architect, I think it would be fitting to find a plot of land recreate all of the Mayberry set. I wonder if anyone has thought of that. To pay tribute to such an iconic show as the Andy Griffith Show. With as iconic the Andy Griffith Show is you'd think someone would have tried to save the old set or at least tried to find a way to relocate it. Sheesh what money does to kill our heritage! Who ever said money is a poor way of keeping score sure did know what they were talking about because we lost a piece of history we can't replace. Maybe in the spirit of Andy's conscience speech on the show one time that maybe someone will feel a sense of guilt and try and recreate everything back to the way things were, but with a society that lacks a conscience I highly doubt that.

    • @Realstuffadventures
      @Realstuffadventures  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Darren H I agree, I have been told tough by the time the backlot was razed in 1976 it was in very bad shape, what was left standing

    • @darrenh5175
      @darrenh5175 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I wonder if there are any photos that detail the set. I would love to get involved in a project to recreate the set somewhere. It do my heart good to see something like that happen and make the set a memorial to all the people that made that show great! A living memorial for a show that gave so much to our society. I'm forever grateful for the memories.

    • @susanslack2691

    • @darrenh5175
      @darrenh5175 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I know about that, but I'm not referring to Mt Airy because it is not Mayberry. Not even close. I would like to see the forty acres backlot to be recreated. Hollywood should be in debt to the contributions of what was produced there, but people don't care.

    • @justinlecroy5217
      @justinlecroy5217 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@darrenh5175 I've thought the same thing as well. If I had money I'd do it. I think if they had preserved this set it'd been a huge tourist draw. Shame it's lost now. Gomer was filmed behind Wally's as well.

    Grew up a few blocks away, and the local kids knew where the holes in the fence were located. About a half-mile away was also the much larger MGM studios Lot #3, which had a good-size lake where they filmed Showboat, Captains Courageous, etc. We trespassed to play on the sets and even fish in the lake numerous times, and were often chased by the guards, but they never caught us.

    Great video. The Andy Griffith Show began production in 1960, though, so it might confuse viewers to show the backlot for Mayberry in 1955. That set was, in all likelihood, used in earlier movies or television shows, so that is why it had existed for several years before it became Mayberry.

    I Wish it was still there to, Sandhill. Those old shows, Andy, Gomer & Hogan were three of my all time favorites. I have every ep on DVD & drive my wife nuts sometimes watching the older stuff. haha Really appreciate you makin' this film. I enjoy seeing where this stuff was done. On the show, I'm ALWAYS trying to figure out whats what & where everything is in relation to everything else. I always thought it funny that when they were shooting an outside shot in front of the jail, if they had to go inside, you could usually see a wall just a few ft inside to cover the fact that it wasnt Really the jail you see on screen! haha. But, those shows bring back some of the best memories of my childhood days. Those were times that I remember & sometimes long to see again. Just like the 70's after I was already playing music, a lot of the bands from those days bring that time back like it was yesterday in one way but Far away in another way when you look at the world now. Dont know if you're a rock fan, but Gary Richrath, guitarist for REO Speedwagon back in the 70's & up into the 80's died on Sept 13th. When one of my favorites from that time passes, its like I lose a little more of those good memories of that time. Just like losing Andy & Don both. Made it just a bit sad watching the show these days. Thanks again, man, & sorry for the rant. Guess I miss those times more than I realized......Steve

      In the 70s, the mindset was not preservation, but selling and subdividing. It is a shame that this and many other places weren't preserved. Incidentally, the 40 Acre Ranch, before Desilu was called the RKO-Pathe Ranch until RKO Radio Pictures went bankrupt in 1956. Today it's called Culver Studios. Also the Desilu Hollywood studio (now RED) on Cahuenga was where the original "I Love Lucy" episodes were filmed from 1951-57.

    • @Realstuffadventures
      @Realstuffadventures  9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      David Hanshaw That would be nice, but it is all about the money, in the 70's the new Hollywood executives were scrambling for revenue and selling off the backlots generated some quick cash. Usually sets, especially for television show are quickly removed and or destroyed after production. Then MGM sold out they not only sold their back lots but virtually all of their famous props and rolling stock

      +SandhillDigger I should have mentioned that I live in that house now for the last several years, but grew up in Echo Park. I remember driving by the old studio as a kid and seeing all of the rundown sets. My next-door neighbor is 94 and has lived on the hill since he built his house in 1953. He told me a few stories about the sights he used to see from his yard. He had a great view too and watched many a movie and TV show being filmed there. I was always fascinated by what took place there. Who knew I would end up working at Fox Studios for over 40 years. There's a ton of history at Fox too. P.S. sorry for the late reply. And thanks again for the fun video.

    In the later episodes of Andy Griffith if you see Wally's fillin' station from the right angle, with the station on the right looking down the street, you can actually see a quonset hut. They park trucks in front of it, but you can still see it. Also at Andy's house when they show the garage, to the right of the roof of the garage you can see a large building in the background. It's less obvious in the black and white episodes since it blends in with the sky.

    • @Realstuffadventures
      @Realstuffadventures  ปีที่แล้ว

      Right, you might be interested to know the garage that was at Andy's house was not actually a full garage, it was just a facade with a back built to it just in front of the fence. right behind the fence is Higeura St. Thanks for watching, please consider subscribing if you have not already :)

Unfortunately you missed one small thing. At one point, while you were on Hayden, you were about 75 feet from a sign next to the sidewalk called, "King Kong Gone." It's a very clever piece that explains the 40 Acres area. It's part of the Culver City public arts project. It can be Googled. Please check it out. Damn! 75 feet away! Again, great work! Kudos.

      There were some episodes when it was COLD, and they were jackets. Also the Christmas episodes they were wearing coats, some of them anyway, such as the cranky BEN. No snow, but it was supposed to be in North Carolina , and I don't believe they get much snow there. but I'm from Kentucky, but I have been to North Carolina, and I don't think they get much. so it fits the show actually. but otherwise I agree, there were way many more summer shows.

      Yes, The Andy Griffith Museum in Mt Airy, NC houses the entire collection of Emmett Forest, Andy's life long friend. Over the years he gave Emmett many many items from The Andy Griffith Show as well as personal items. I believe the desk according to the museum is not the one that was on the show, but the items like the Eagle, mallet ant pen holder is from the show. The museum is the greatest and the best place to see props, wardrobe and other items from the show. Betty Lynn (Thelma Lou) live in Mt Airy now, soon to celebrate her 90th birthday. She has also donated some great items to the museum from her life, etc.

      The Inglewood Oil Field is still in operation but with fewer pumps.

    This lot is a metaphor for progress and society.
    Small town America became a cold impersonal profit driven space with nature blocked out and away from our lives.
    I've lived in Suburbia since 1959 except for my summers at my friends log camp much like the Ponderous in the Canadian. woods.
    At retirement my wife and I plan to go back in time and adventure with our small camper on Vancouver island and Southern Ontario.

    it would have been nice to have preserved the Andy Griffith set for tourists

      yes, but by the time the lot sold it was pretty much already in ruins from decay and vandalism

    Was there nothing saved from when this was the 40 acre backlot? Not one building or land mark? Were some of those sound stages there in the 50s and 60s?

      Nothing . It was razed. the only thing I know of that was saved for sure was the remains of the Tara set from Gone With The Wind. It is in private storage in or near Atlanta, GA. Everything was in disrepair in the last days when it was razed in 1976. None of the buildings on the lot today are from the Desilu era. They were all built after 1976.

    I enjoyed your clip SandhillDigger, I went on a tour through the old MGM studios in 2014, it was interesting but a little dissappointing as they mainly blabbed on about Sony stuff and hardly touched on all the great MGM films made there. but I have to say I was thrilled just to set foot on the lot. Gomer Pyle USMC, Hogan's Heroes The Andy griffith Show we all favourites of mine as a kid growing up in New Zealand in the 60's.

    Thanks for sharing this very interesting piece of history. I have often wondered what is where the old courthouse was, and you can't tell much from the available aerial or satellite photos. Thanks once again.
