  • Visit the location in Malibu Creek State Park in the Santa Monica Mountains. The trail I took was from the main gate through the picnic area. I am sure there is another way in that is shorter. it was a very nice hike, and interesting to see!

Spent a couple of years in Korea and these locations here with their short sharp mountains are surprisingly similar to the hills north of Seoul. Whoever did the locations scouting did a great job.

sorry it took so long, but anyway there is a road going most of the way into the canyon from the entrance but eventually it narrows down to a path...I am not familiar with the entire area and the access, but I am sure that during the production days when they were shooting movies and tv shows in here they would have had access roads.....or......maybe they used helicopters???? :)

I happened to come across this location by accident. We used to pull oil wells not to far from here my supervisor and I were looking for a rig crew. he knew about this location but it was my first time to see it. He was getting me familiar with the locations. He also told me that "Joe Dirt" had scenes filmed here as well. And yes it does get hot. Poor oil field workers. Lol.

I’m in Boston and I think I’ve heard Boston General and Mass General on the show. In real life it’s Mass General Hospital. Is this site a Federal or State Forest, this could complicate any permanent signs or buildings. But imagine being stuck in a war zone, in the woods and a foreign country, Klinger tried many times to quit but was always stopped.

Thank you for this sir. M.A.S.H. was my favorite show of my youth. My Dad and I watched it together until the end. My father joined the Army and served 3 years in Korea. He enlisted at 18 years old. He told me everything about his experiences. Some good, some horrifying. He received a Purple Heart for taking a round in his leg. My Dad is 84 now with Alzheimer's and Dementia. But he still remembers everything little from that war. From getting ambushed to getting drunk with the Sweedish Army. This meant a lot to me.Thanks again sir.

I wish there were such a great show for the youth of America to see the realities of war in a different light now. I grew up during the Vietnam war and yrs directly following and I watched this in my childhood. While it is a comedy, it is a dark sense of humor and addresses the fact that there are many victims-on both sides-who are all treated as human beings whose lives are valued when it comes to the medical personnel. This show showed the victims-children, young men, medical personnel, who are all just pawns in government's vendettas,, et once war touches their lives they are forever changed. No one wins wars. We ALL lose.

I lived in "The Swamp Tent" for many years. All my Friends did sleep in my home, 'cause I'd invite friends out for a "Hide 'n Go Seek" 3 day 'n 3 night weekend. We had more fun then you could imagine! Full on Fun 'n play till ya drop! If tired, just go on in, grab a cot, when ya wake up, get'cher butt back out 'n play! In all those years of play, I Never once got caught, found by anyone! And was everybody Mad when it was over & I finally revealed my secret hiding place!!! You guessed correctly if ya figured out I stood still, frozen in the same place for 7 yrs. of play! My black gloves hid my face as each one was "it" & walked 2 feet in front of me. Nobody could believe the simplicity of my cleverness, I was hidden literally in plain sight! Ha!Ha!Ha! ~ "Tag, Yer It!"

"Orientate" is not a word. "Orient" is the word you should have used regarding the maps and signs. Never end sentences with "at" as those are prepositions.

Great show, great memories of the entire family watching M*A*S*H every week until the last one. Unfortunately, it's very rare to see the final. Seems like the networks carry and show every episode up to the time capsule episode. Which was actually filmed after the good-bye episode. They show the time capsule episode and the next show we see is season 1, episode 1. Oh well. Just saying it would be nice to see it now and then

NCIS; despite a lot of it supposed to take place in Arlington, Va; it was filmed in Santa Clarita. Of course what I found bittersweet were the rustFREE old cars/trucks from the 1960's in supporting scenes. I was born/raised in the DC area and, trust me, a 1974 vehicle was already starting to rot away by 1978.

Thank you, sir. Although not American, I felt the nostalgia in your visit to this famed site. The high quality of the series was such that viewers from everywhere experienced a kind of "ownership" of the personnel and surroundings. People from age 10 upwards found their own unique reasons for loving and identifying with the show which was, imo, the finest TV realistic fictional drama to leave the shores of the United States. Cheers, Col (69) NZ.

I was there a few weeks ago (April, 2018). It looks much the same, but the rusted truck is gone and the tent sites are no longer marked. However, they've set up picnic tables with camouflage netting over them at the site of the mess tent, so I was able to sit and have a snack in the mess tent! Too cool. Almost worth an 8,000 mile road trip just for that.
Malibu Creek State Park is a really nice park, I was impressed, it also didn't hurt that the weather was just as nice as you could ask for, sunny and cool.

when I attended marine corps boot camp at mcrd san diego in 1984 we went to camp Pendleton for rifle range and field training, and I remembered when we first arrived at camp san onofre for rftd I saw the mountains and commented that it reninded me of the opening credits for mash! one of our drill instructors replied that he believed the show was filmed in that area so it probably was! then he made me and the other private give him 50 bends and thrusts for talking in the ranks!

One of the great things about MASH was the show NEVER disrespected those who served in the military. It portrayed the Korean conflict but appeared on TV at the end of the Vietnam war. Given how poorly we veterans were treated it was a joy to watch a show that showed all veterans the respect we had earned. For that reason alone it became one of my favorite shows.

You're another person who is quick to point out how badly Vietnam vets were treated, but is quiet on who specifically treated them badly. Because it was not the entire population of the US. Far from it. It was the radical American Left.

I hiked this last year. He's right, it's a HIKE. I thought I'd gotten lost, it took so long to get there. And there's very poor signage, pointing the way. If I hadn't seen a sign for the MASH site, just after I crossed a concrete bridge, I was going to turn back and see if I'd missed a turn. There's no easy way to get there, and you have to pass by a big bee hive, or something with a crap-ton of buzzing insects that I wasn't about to stop, and piss off. And it really does stink, too. I got hit with this terrible sewage type smell, probably just rotting vegetation, right before I got to the site, and remembered when Winchester first got there.
    Winchester: What is that oder?
Radar: North wind, cesspool; East wind, latrine.
Winchester: The wind is from the South.
    Radar: Oh, that's the kitchen.
But it was worth it. I stood in a piece of television, and American culture history. Called my brother from the helipad, and did my best Col Potter voice and told him "I am standing on the helipad of MASH 4-0-double-7, in Uijonbu Korea." He told me I was a dork. And he's right. So what?
Oh, and wear comfortable shoes, it's along hike back, too.

I hiked up there in 1982, during the break before the final season was filmed. Because it was the break, all the tents had been taken down, but, as now, you could see where they were set up. They had a lot of camouflage netting still in place around the helipad - I must confess that I swiped a strip of khaki fabric from there (as I'm sure many have done before me), but have no idea where it is now.
You're right about the fire up there. In the series finale, I was always confused about why the plot had them "bugging out" just before the war's end, so that their last few scenes together took place with the 4077th set up at an entirely different location from the one we'd been familiar with all these years. As it turned out, it was necessary because the familiar location had been severely burned, and wasn’t usable for filming.

My friends & I went there in 1980. The "unit" was basically set up, even between seasons. We took a ton of pictures. We were able to drive up to within 2 city blocks of the site. It was totally surprising how small the "buildings" were. Rosie's was a front, about 5 or 6 feet deep. Quite an experience. ;^D

Hello! I lived in "The Swamp Tent" for the last 5 years of the show. Have we met? They called me "Miss MASH" probably because I actually, really did live in "The Swamp Tent" out there in the middle of nowhere in the Mountains.Hawkeye 'n BJ never really did. LoL! I can tell you this true fact from my heart: "If there would of been a way to live out the rest of my life in that Swamp Tent, you could of Never gotten me out!" During my life way out there, I met some of The Greatest People I could, or ever would of met anywhere else on Earth! M*A*S*H Fans, people from Every Part of The Globe would trek all the way out just to see the set! I bought cases of T-Shirts, just like the one I am wearing there, sitting in my home, "The Swamp Tent" I would give them out to certain people as I bought cases at the studio. Maybe You got one from me? Parents & children alike just Loved it! At times I was known for dressing a bit of the set for "Still Shots Only" I would even bring out "The Ric Shaw" & use a type of sign language & Point to the people as to what they should do to get some most xlnt photos of them, for their books to share with others back home! Well, I guess I should end here, after all, this is No Novel! Take Care, &, If you do ever plan to hike out there= "Beware of Rattlesnakes!!" I say this only as friendly advice! I made a Large plywood sign, leaninh up against Col. Potters stable, & I Always had a fresh dead one lying there because I wanted to Warn people of this True Danger! "Do NOT Open Any Tent Doors! That one just popped his head out, rattled his tail, & lunged at me! I blew the sucker's head off!" Would'nt You? : ) Take care, Use prayer, Miss M*A*S*H ~

@@paulscontainersltd.4020 Covington, GA to be exact. Covington is known as the Hollywood of the south because they have been used frequently as a filming location. The vampire TV series "Twilight" was filmed there along with the show "In the Heat of the Night". Some scenes from the movie "My Cousin Vinny with Joe Pesci and Ralph Macchio" was also filmed around Covington.

Hawkeye Pierce was a communist sympathizer with an attitude problem.
Love the show though. Kick ass footage of it now. In a way, I think for us MASH fans, that place is like a second home or seeing an old friend.

      I'm not so sure he was intended to be;
Dr. Hornberger modeled the character of Capt. Benjamin Franklin (Hawkeye) Pierce after himself, his son said. Partly for that reason, he disliked the television series and almost never watched it.
''He liked the movie because he thought it followed his original intent very closely,'' William Hornberger said. ''But my father was a political conservative, and he did not like the liberal tendencies that Alan Alda portrayed Hawkeye Pierce as having.''
''My father didn't write an anti-war book,'' he added. ''It was a humorous account of his work, with serious parts thrown in about the awful kind of work it was, and how difficult and challenging it was.''

John Gee you are so right. And you wont see it again in television either. No tv show anywheres in the world could ever hope to come close with the amount of viewers like itvdid for MASH's very last episodes. Cause when that show was on there were only four networks at that time. The big 3 which were ABC, CBS, and NBC. Then you had PBS which is public tv. So you had a more controlled group of viewers of that time. Nowadays you have many more networks, the net, and several ways of watching some movie or some other show that's not airing at all. So I think that record of people watching the very last episode of MASH will never be broken by another tv show.

While I was stationed in the LA area, we visited the MASH film site several times. The hospital was still standing (in good shape) as were the tent supports. The road to/from the site were a bit worn.... but it was a well worth trip.......Brought back wonderful memories.

At least one fire has gone through that area since the filming, as SandhillDigger states, but I was wondering if any fires have gone through the Planet of the Apes filming location which I know is nearby here. According to the Adam the Woo vlog at the apes location, he shows a tree that is the same one shown in the movie. I would guess that a fast moving wildfire prob burns up dead material quickly and does not always kill live trees and plants? At least not all of them... The fires that we have here in Colorado are going to behave a little bit diff than those in those in more dry climates like So Cal.

You have to remember that a big chunk of the series was filmed in studio. They used this Locale from time to time. I'm sure it saved money to film in studio. From basic things like feeding all the people there to transportation of equipment, it was much better in a controlled environment.

I loved this show even though it was trying to send out an anti-Vietnam war vibe, basically justifying our abandonment of our allies in SE Asia.
It was still a great TV show.

My older cousin's husband, a Marine, faught in the Korean War. She received notice he was missing in action. It turned out his unit was trapped behind enemy lines but was able to fight it's way back to allied held ground. It took them 5 days to so while suffering several casualties. As I was growing up he treated me really well.

I was active duty USAF when MASH was on TV,, mostly oversea’s and AFRTS wasn’t airing it. I really only watched a few episodes when it was on TV,. But I was attending the USAFE NCO Academy in Kapaun AS in Germany when the last episode aired. I recall the set up bunch of TV’s in the Rec Center, Airman, NCO and Officers Clubs. I missed it, but the next day that was ALL I heard about from fellow classmates. Fast forward to today, I started watching MeTV as an escape from the crap on tv today and all the COVID and politics being stuffed down our throats and started watching MASH. It’s still relevant today and even more meaningful having been in uniform from 1971 - 1993. We started watching from episode 1 season 1 and are now up to season 6. I peaked at some things, but have only had the guts to watch a few minutes of the ending. What a marvelous tv show, it means so much to us all these decades later. I can tell you as a veteran I would want a Hawkeye to care for me if I had been wounded in combat. The last episode will be difficult I’m sure. USAF Retired

2:50. Someone should haul that rust heap away! What an INSULT to the memory if MASH. To bad no group or foundation has recreated the MASH set on that site as a museum to make it what we saw on TV... Kind if like the museum honoring JFK in Dallas... The Field of Dreams site as seen in the movie still stands today, just as it was seen in the movie...MASH deserves better than this
