Yeah, this video actually made me open to the idea of opening my ps4 and doing this myself. I'm assuming that this video is still just as applicable even today in 2018 (except of course the file that we download will be version 6.00 at this point).
I tried to install a Seagate backup plus slim 2tb several times last week and decided to give up momentarily. I must have watched 6 how to videos. You were the first person to point out the importance of finding the "new installation system software". Thanks for being thorough!
Just installed my 2TB Seagate HD. Super easy with the help of this video. I had it installed and initialized under 30min! Now I have a portable 500gb HD for sale. Any takers? Thanks!
Thank you, you're one of the few people who pointed out where the correct download is, most just referred to its existence. It's a simple thing, but when you're doing something like this to your PS4, you want things to be straightforward.
Total Nerd Takeover I'm going to purchase this pretty soon thanks to your video. But question. Let's say from January through December of 2015, I buy two triple- A titled games each month. Would i have enough space left to repeat this exact same process for 2016?
sakib choudhury Thats the same problem I had the first time. I had been downloading the wrong file. Make sure you go all the way to the bottom of the Sony software page where it says ' Perform a New Installation of the System Software. The proper file for download should be right there. If you still have issues hit me up.
Ty Campbell No problem this link may help better explain how to do this support.us.playstation.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5228/~/manage-ps4-save-game-data
First: Great explanation on the OS installation, very clear. I've been looking for information on transferring the games as well. The PS4 uses restore (after backing up to an external drive) to move the games to the newly installed drive. What I'm thinking is that I can cut the external drive out of the equation, (since the PS4 HDD will be acting as my external HDD) and just use a usb/sata cable to transfer the games and system information back in. My intention is to: 1. Download the PS4 OS to my flash drive. 2. Remove the PS4HDD from the PS4. 3. Install the Firecuda to the PS4. 4. Upload the PS4 OS to the Firecuda. 5. Connect the PS4HDD-via usb/sata connector-to the PS4 and restore to the Firecuda. I'm a little unsure that "restore" may not work since I didn't back up right from the ps4, and i'm merely trying to transfer games and system information, without actually backing up. Do you think this will work or am I going to really foul things up? Thanks for your input!
I am not sure if this will work, I have not messed with the Hard drive in a while. I believe there is a faster way to transfer games files and settings to a new drive. I think Sony now lets you have an external drive to copy everything. You can then install your new drive and copy everything that was backed up from the external. More like a complete mirror, Please let me know how you make out.
I wanted to do the replacement expansion drive thing using a external drive too, but another tutorial said that a lot of models now have the attachments hardwired to the HDD in them.
+Total Nerd Takeover +Total Nerd Takeover Hey man, so i'm out of memory right now on my stock PS4 hard drive and if i would want to move all my game saves, trophies, system update stuff and all that from my stock hard drive to the 2tb hard drive, can i just plug the 2tb external hard drive into my PS4, move all the saves and stuff from the stock hard drive to the 2tb one, then put the 2tb one inside the PS4? Then i'd just download the system update from the playstation site to my USB stick and then plug it into my PS4. Or can i download the system update from the playstation website to my 2tb external hard drive too, and then put it in my PS4?
Sorry that will not work. You will need to have a separate drive or USB stick to save game saves and multimedia data. You cannot save fun games or trophies to the back up. Trophies are stored with your account info with Sony. If you have PS Plus you can safe some game saves to the cloud. Another thing to mention is after you put the new drive in look for the instal file not the update file. After you put the new drive in the Instal file is needed to format and setup the new drive. If you need help with backing up check out my backing up PS4 video th-cam.com/video/GlIghVtBvak/w-d-xo.html
+Game-Caliber I would go with USB or External Back up drive. Cloud is great if you are a Playstation Plus member but you only get so much cloud space. Not nearly enough right now.
Hello Jonathan Trujillo, To answer your question - Yes a cheap HD can get louder or hotter. I think it depends on the manufacturer and just how cheap a drive we are talking.
Total Nerd Takeover to add to what you said, the HHDs used in the new consoles are the cheapest laptop drives the manufacturers can get their hands on. they source their drives from WD, seagate, toshiba, samsung, etc. whatever they can get in bulk at the moment for cheaper. so some PS4s will have WD drives, some will have seagate, etc. but they are all 5400 or 5900RPM drives. so you can't get anything cheaper than what's already there. additionally, the cheaper hard drives have slower spindle speeds and actually run cooler than the more expensive 7200 RPM drive. furthermore, the person who made that comment about cheaper drives running hotter is an idiot.
Total Nerd Takeover Sorry one question after i downoloaded the system software for initializing the ps4 if in future if will install an update of the software i will have problems? Thanks very much
+Bryan Candelaria Maldonado Wonder no more my friend, I made a video to help you with that very problem. th-cam.com/video/GlIghVtBvak/w-d-xo.html That should get you the info you need and if you have questions please hit me up.
this was so helpful. I've seen a bunch of people show the first part(which is the easy part) but your the first one I've seen to show the whole thing. Thanks.
hey i just followed the tutorial the whole way through but once i got into safe mode and i was tried initialising, it came up saying - " The update file cannot be used. Connect a USB storage device that contains an update file for re installation for version 2.55 or later (CE-34788-0). Any ideas?
GG my guy what a great video. I was having problems with my external hard drive and i was just tired of no space i was looking for recommendations on which hard drive to buy and stumbled on your video and my eyes were wide open. I follow every step and now thanks to you i got myself 2tb on my playstation 4 :D
Is 2tb enough to last you until the next console generation considering many games will be out too? Also apparently there is a 3tb 2.5 inch hard drive out now which can fit the PS4 do you think it will work?
+Marky Azurin 2TB should be fine for my needs, when I am done with games I usually delete them from the drive. I will have to look into the 3TB drive, it should work if it fits in the PS4.
I bought a Xbox One, and upgraded the HDD to a 2TB. It wasn't quite as simple as this, but it is possible. The simplicity and user friendliness of the PS4 is nothing to overlook. I will be picking one up.
armystrong6920 I know this is old but Xbox one had external hard drive support from day 1. Ps4 just added external support this year. I have both systems and it's much more user friendly to allow external hard drives. Just saying
Hello, I did upgrade my ps4 to the 2TB hard drive but now I want to swap my 2TB hard drive back to 500gb. Is it a simple swap or would I have to install the software on my thumb drive? I never cleared the 500gb oem hard drive. Any help will be great. Thanks
for those who are british, use the american link for the software for some reason, the british link does not download, it onl downloads 200+ mb where the american link downloads 800+ mb
yes i see what your saying i made the same mistake send me a message and let me know are you at the very bottom of the page or are you on update from computer or something like that. it should say perform a new installation of system software
Total Nerd Takeover Had to replace my hard drive again. I had left it in rest mode and there was a power outage. Once again, this is a great instruction video. I send it to my PS4 friends should they decide to upgrade.
WOW ok I have some major issues here. I bought A sEAGATE sshd 1tb and I have a 64GB SONY USB brand new right out of the packaging. FIRST time I went to the playstation site and downloaded the 3.11 UPDATE file so about 250MB or so, having set up my new SSHD inside the PS4 I plugged it in. plugged in the PS4 controller and the USB drive in another USB slot. I scrolled down to the bottom option of a full install."After a couple mins it read that I do not have the proper file. OK then, I went to playstations site AGAIN and downloaded a 760MB file for a full install, wiped the USB clean and reformatted it to one of ONLY 2 options so basically a FAT32 format. THEN I made another set of folders = PS4>UPDATE>PS4UPDATE.PUP. tURNED off THE ps4 COMPLETELY, WAITED 10 SECONDS AND STARTED IT THE SAME WAY AGAIN. Held down on the Power button until it beeped. Hit the PS button on the controller again, plugged in the USB again, went to a full install again.... and after a mere 20 secs... cannot find the update file (CE-30774-1) shows up. HERE is the thing...I TRIED opening the file on my desktop using SO many programs in my windows 10 arsenal so there are now icons on it, was WINRAR, was IE, was Google etc and I cannot for the LIFE of me get it to its original format. EVERY time I transfer it from my downloads to my usb, the icons show up on the file right away. I do not know HOW to return the file to its original format but I doubt that is really the issue here at all. 5.5 hours now....5.5 damn hours I have been screwing with this and I am at the point where I want to use my brand new Limited Edition Destiny king gold and white PS4 as a damn FRISBEE.
+ClassyNova I am so sorry this has been happening to you, I think I have a solution it may seem crazy but please give it a try any way. Try using a USB stick thats 8GB I just read somewhere while researching solutions for your issue that the PS4 does not read large flash memory yet and they are working on a update to fix it. So give that a try and if that does not work email me at Feedback@tnerdt.com
I just tried something different last night that might work if someone else has this issue. The above steps that I listed i followed with one exception and i have NO idea why this would make any sort of difference, but i named the file update...in all lower case letters...and that worked. So there is another solution to add to your excellent bag of tricks sir and thank you deeply for doing that research into this since all you had to say is i dont know....but you didnt...and in the group i am employed with...we refer to that as above and beyond the call of duty.
Huge success for me! Now I got more free space! I was worried about the software part of this setup but, now I got it down. Thanks for the setup vid. 8)
Well done by annotating that the needed file for the update is the one below which is specific for the new installation, because i think i am not the only one who was trying it with the update file which was not working and giving me errors, i say so because this is the only video that mention it and i have watched about 4 different videos already
+Patricio Da silva Your most welcome, I wanted that to really stand out in this video. I did the same thing lol so I figured many others would need the help.
this guy is awesome he explains stuff very clearly hey TH-cam and people who post instructional videos, pay attention listen to this guy very carefully!!
Thanks for the step by step worked perfectly. After you put the original HDD back into the expansion case do you need to format it to use it as an external HD or does it work already?
Hello Xbmoyx, Your most welcome for the video I am very happy it worked for you. The drive needs to be formatted to work correctly with a Pc or Mac. Thank you again for checking out the video and subscribing.
Great how to video, looks a lot simpler than I had believed, ordering a 2TB drive and swapping it out for the one currently in my PS4, make more room for gave installs.
I'll use the video as a step by step guide when I change out the drives, kind of wish I had done this earlier as I had thought it was more complex but seems a little research does the world of good.
Total Nerd Takeover Thanks again for this video, just installed a 2TB drive onto my PS4 & its running I am about to install my games & saves onto the new bigger hard drive, your video showed all that needed to be shown and made the whole process easy & fool proof.
Just installed a 2tb Samsung seagate 5400. It works a litros better i guess and i have 1.4TB left after downloading all my games and game saves for Only $60!!! Worth it people!
Thanks Chris this video made it easy to do for me and the info is detailed specially the software part ... lots of videos doesn't mention the new installation part ... thumps up bro
+PSP PSN Thank you so much, I wanted to focus hard on the software part mostly because thats where I had an issue. I messed up not explaining the backing up part well enough, so I made a separate video detailing it. Either way I strive to help people the best I can. Thank you for using the video and your kind words. By the way I love your name PSP PSN that = Awesome!
finding your video really saved me about $4 and a case to reuse the 500gb hd, i may use it in mylaptop and us the 1tb in my laptop in the seagate case... i did find the video helpful just no in the way you intended... lol thanks ! i appreciate it
Saw this drive today and was thinking if it would be possible to use the drive inside for my PS4. Couldn't believe it was so was inexpensive compared to standalone drives on Amazon
Success!!!with the help of your tutorial swapped my PS4 500gb for a 2 terabyte HD and put the 500 in the case(now using it to back up my main computer)thanks for your help.It was a piece of cake thanks to you
This was the first time I ever did anything remotely like this in my life. I just reached new nerd heights. Honestly, you can't muck it up if you follow it all point by point. Get a Seagate 2tb from Big W if you live in Australia. I backed up all my stuff before I installed the new hard drive so you will need a 500g external to backup, unless you go cloud.
Hey, thanks man, worked really well!!! One question though, after I took the old drive out of the ps4, which turns out to be a HGST 500GB drive, do i need to format it again to use it on the PS3? Cuz i tried to use the same USB connector that came with the 2TB HDD but it doens't seem to connect to my PC properly? Only reason is because I want to re-use the HDD and put it into my PS3 cuz i currently have 120GB and its full, so i was going to use this one as more space.
tetris12367 Thank you for the question, It has been a while since I changed out a PS3 hard drive. But if memory serves you do not have to format the drive. The PS3 will handle this from the system installer on a USB drive, similar to what you do with a PS4. Here is a link that may help support.us.playstation.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1189/session/L2F2LzEvdGltZS8xNDMzOTAwNDY1L3NpZC9pQ2hKbXZvbQ%3D%3D
Total Nerd Takeover Hey thanks for the help, I just got it of a IGN video which was really simple. Really appreciate the help though with a really simple video that you did, thanks for the help :) Now I not worry about space as my PS4 has 2TB and PS3 has 500GB, thank you!
Total Nerd Takeover haha yea, already got the witcher 3, battlefront, assassins creed syndicate, uncharted 4, need for speed, mass effect (4), new Hitman, Mirrors Edge, Rainbow 6 Siege and The Division planned
good video, but I sure hope you've upgraded to using guitar picks over the last few years. picks are so much easier on the plastics, so you don't mangle the sides of an enclosure and it's harder for Seagate etcetera to tell that you've voided the warranty if something breaks and you put the hdd back together and send it back to them
Hi Total Nerd Takeout, Thank you so much for this video, I am over the moon now that I have a bigger HDD. I now have a 2TB Everything worked will Recommend your channel to others who are looking to update there HDD. Thank you
When I plug my usb with the PS update; it tells me it can't find it. I thought it was because it wasn't the only file I had on there, so I got rid of everything else, and did, but the same thing. My hard drive is a Seagate just like yours. Any thoughts?
The guide was very easy to follow and i will surely follow it once i do decide to upgrade. I want to buy a PS4 in the near future, but is the 2Tb upgrade really needed ? That's seems like alot of storage and overkill.
+PowerfulLighting Thank you for the kind words. Having the 2 TB might seem like overkill at first glance, but many gamers love buying the digital downloads and having the games there loaded and ready at a moments notice. Not to mention the size of video games is going up.
Thanks for posting, best PS4 2TB drive upgrade video I've seen on TH-cam. I've a little concern about the reliability of this 2TB drive and have seen some comments on Amazon reporting that it dies prematurely. Is yours still operating fine after 10 months of use?
+Bernard Wei Thank you for watching the video and the kind words. As for the life of the hard drive, It is still alive and kicking. I have had no issues with the drive so far after 10 months.
hi sir, I have a question about the PS4 HDD (500GB) can i use the original PS4 HDD(500 GB) as an ordinary hard driver after i replace it with the 2TB? i hope you reply, thanks
Thanks so much total nerd for your quick respond i see you are very dedicated your subscribers, you have earn a loyal fan here keep up the good work "god bless"
Thank you so much Alex, I know how frustrating it can be to get stuff working. Sometimes I respond slower then I like but I always try to answer. Did you get the USB stick to work with your PS4?
Yes i got it to work i wasn't downloading the correct firmware update like you said, why sony does not explain these on their front page its totally ridiculous, thanks again bro you a life saver...
Your tutorial out of everyone else's on TH-cam helped the most. Thank you a million times!! Now I can play my 1.77tb (it went down fr 2tb after installation-not complaining!) PS4 asap ☺
Thank you for this video and Merry Christmas! I was wondering if you could still initialize the system if you don't have a USB cable from the controller to the console?
Hello.Just watch your useful video... ;).Just to make sure, i can put the old PS4 drive in the Expansion closure of the new drive, just teared apart, to transfer the old datas back to the new drive just installed, by putting this old one in the enclosure on usb on the PS4?Many thanks.
hey I watched your video about upgrading your hard drive I see a lot of people back in their PS4 up taking the old hard drive out putting in a new hard drive but you know you never see them create the files the most important thing of the video is to show how to do the files as well not just showing taking out the hard drive and stuff like that
Total Nerd Takeover you're video was great very useful and helped me understand what I shall have to do, subbed immediately actually but after watching this, one question that came to me was with the new software update 4.5, is it possible for you to get the same external hard drive that you used and leave it plugged to the PS4 USB port as an external storage now as advertised by many?
Fr34k5z Great question here is how I reused the Hdd out of the ps4. I put the old ps4 hard drive in the seagate enclosure making sure to reconnect the data connection before closing the case all up. I then plunged the drive into my win PC running Win 7. After the PC got done installing drivers I followed these steps. To format an external drive in Windows:Plug your drive into the computer and, if necessary, into a wall outlet.Open Windows Explorer, click the "Computer" section in the sidebar, and find your drive.Right-click on the drive and choose "Format."Under "File System," choose the file system you want to use. See the above section for more details on which one to pick.Give your drive a name under "Volume Label," and check the "Quick Format" box.Click "Start" to format the drive. You'll get a notification when it's done (it should only take a few seconds).
Thanks for the response! However my laptop is not reading the HDD for some reason. Not showing up under "Computer", therefore I can't format it. I made sure to put it back in the casing exactly the way I took it out, following your steps. What could I have done wrong?
I was super careful, so I'm confident that nothing got damaged. The drive powered up and said it had installed drivers, but nothing popped up on my win7. Nothing in the computer folder either.
Ok it sounds like a software issue, Here is a guide that should help you get the drive setup. Let me know how you make out. www.makeuseof.com/tag/external-drive-not-recognized-this-is-how-to-fix-it-in-windows/
I'm hoping there is external hard drive support for the ps4 soon. I use a 2tb external drive with my xbox one and it works flawlessly (nice being able to use the external plus the internal drive). Still, great vid!
Ok so I want everyone to know that you can use a external hdd rather than a usb to put the files on. So if you happen to have a external hard drive rather than a flash drive just use that and format it to "exFat" and you'll be able to use it on the ps4.
Thank you for taking the time to do this video and the links for everything you need! Did you have to format the new HD or perform any other action with it after taking it out of the box and installing it ( other than taking it out of its enclosure)?
used your tutorial clear instructions step by step installing new hard drive a doddle but the USB installing Sony game update to USB ps4updatepup kept getting rejected on ps4 so i noticed there was either 01 or 02 after ps4updatepup so deleted 01 or o2 and bingo works great many thanks for this tutorial much appreciated
Hello Dream Killer, There are a few ways to save your game data. I found this link that should give you all the PS4 supported options. support.us.playstation.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5228/~/manage-ps4-save-game-data Let me know how you make out my friend.
Hey I was just wondering if your games that you have on your PSN be deleted cause I have The Last Of Us remastered downloaded off a Card that came with PS4 on it and I dont wanna loose that game..
Good video! One question, If all I have on my PS4 is hard copy games, do I need to do a system backup? Or can I just swap the new hard drive in, do the system update, sign in and install each game again? Hope that makes sense, thanks!
+Perando (Mend0zaaa-) You can back up the game saves or data on a USB drive or external drive then transfer that data to the new drive. Here is a video that may help th-cam.com/video/GlIghVtBvak/w-d-xo.html You can also mirror you drive to an external then transfer the mirrored data over after new instal. I don't have a video on this yet unfortunately
So I'm on the screen at 11:13 in the video, I've held down the power putt on for 7 seconds until I've heard the second beep but when i press the PS button on the controller, nothing happens, the controller turns yellow when the USB cable is connected and flashes white for a brief second when I press the PS button and it then goes back to yellow. It does not go into safe mode. Help?
Is the new hard drive fully installed and seated properly? Do you have the flash drive in the usb slot with the instal software? do you have the controller plugged all the way in?
Yup, the hard drive is properly screwed in, the memory stick with the new install software (same as flash drive, I'm from the UK :L) and yes the controller was plugged all the way in and nothing's changed. The funny thing is I removed the new hard drive and put the old one back in and the PS4 started up absolutely fine so does that mean there is a problem with the hard drive? Or maybe I ordered the wrong one? This was the one I ordered: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00TKFEE5S/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I believe this is a newer model to the one you had in the video but surely that shouldn't make a difference? Thanks for replying by the way!
Question. I am upgrading to a 2tb next week and I know I can redone load all of my games. However I am concerned about some of my digital seasons passes like premium for the battlefield games. Will they transfer as well? Thanks for the video though. Very helpful
Jesse Degennaro Thank you for checking out the video, your season passes should be connected to your Sony account and a new hard drive should not give you any problems.
This is something I've been considering for awhile. I currently have about 80GB left on my 500GB hard drive, and maybe its placebo but I feel like the performance has suffered a tiny bit. Would upgrading the hard drive help with that issue? Thanks in advance for any advice, and great video man!
If you upgrade the hard drive it can help performance. You would need to get a drive with higher RPM or a solid state drive aka SSD. This can greatly increase the price.
thanks for this excelent video, i'll do it for sure. but i have a question, do i have to give format to the HDD before puting it in the ps4 ?? and thanks again!!
Hi, can you upload game save data to a usb before doing this then redownload it? I dont want to lose my saves and if so could you maybe even make a tutorial for it? Thanks
Craig Yates No problem in the mean time this link may help get ya started support.us.playstation.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5228/~/manage-ps4-save-game-data
Question sir: If we have all our game data on the Online storage can we reupload on the new harddrive if we just log into our psn and upload it that way? Or do we need an external harddrive to repload everything? I've seen other videos of people doing it with the external but if we have it on the Online Storage will it b alright? Sorry for the long questions.
Actually, 4GB is not enough room and if you meant 4TB, then it wont fit as its not 2.5" , it will need an adaptive case for the ps4 that is an aftermarket product made by a third party that sits on the PS4 where the gloss cover goes, I cant remember the make but you can find it on amazon.
Yeah 2TB is the highest capacity in 2.5" so far, but if you want 3,4 or 6TB, then you need to buy the adapter kit from amazon, its called the "Nyko Data Bank for Sony Playstation 4 - Upgrade your PS4 Hard Drive"
In the rush to be first, a lot of people miss the minute details. This video is not one of those. It was very detailed, easily understandable and clear in what was needed.

Yeah, this video actually made me open to the idea of opening my ps4 and doing this myself. I'm assuming that this video is still just as applicable even today in 2018 (except of course the file that we download will be version 6.00 at this point).
Jonathan Speed so can a 3.5 inch fit into the first gen PS4?
could u restore your data from the original ps4 harddrive via the external case
I tried to install a Seagate backup plus slim 2tb several times last week and decided to give up momentarily.
I must have watched 6 how to videos. You were the first person to point out the importance of finding the "new installation system software".
Thanks for being thorough!
+Day Barrineau You are most welcome, that was a point I really wanted to show. Thank you for watching the video.
+Natan Rifkin Your most welcome, and thank you for the kind words and for checking out the video.
Sorry every one I made a mistake in the video when referring to USB storage size. The correct amount of space is 1 GB.
Total Nerd Takeover aha thanks!
I was confused lol
Lol i got confused

Might be a good idea to put an annotation there to help clear confusion!
Good call I may even just edit that part out looks like only once I messed that up. Thank you

Glad to be of help. Apart from that little mistake this was a wonderfully edited, extremely informative video!
Thanks so much man! I bought this hdd and did all the exact same steps :D! I'm gonna enjoy my 2TB HDD on PS4 now. Thanks again!
No problem XenonLegend, Enjoy the extra space I sure enjoy it lol
Total Nerd Takeover I'm going to purchase this pretty soon thanks to your video. But question. Let's say from January through December of 2015, I buy two triple- A titled games each month. Would i have enough space left to repeat this exact same process for 2016?
I think you will be fine in that regard, thank you for checking out the video Mrpositive92.
Total Nerd Takeover okay, thanks. And you're welcome
sakib choudhury Thats the same problem I had the first time. I had been downloading the wrong file. Make sure you go all the way to the bottom of the Sony software page where it says ' Perform a New Installation of the System Software. The proper file for download should be right there. If you still have issues hit me up.
Great video. But I'm still confused as to how you keep your save games and downloadable stuff after you switch hard drives?

Hey Total, just upgraded my ps4. Thanks for all your help and guidance.
+budgie204 You are most welcome. Thank you for watching the video.
My intention is to:
No worries just buy a stand alone drive, link in the description.
+Total Nerd Takeover +Total Nerd Takeover Hey man, so i'm out of memory right now on my stock
PS4 hard drive and if i would want to move all my game saves, trophies,
system update stuff and all that from my stock hard drive to the 2tb
hard drive, can i just plug the 2tb external hard drive into my PS4,
move all the saves and stuff from the stock hard drive to the 2tb one,
then put the 2tb one inside the PS4?
Total Nerd Takeover
Which one do you recommend back up the saves and all that on more, USB stick or cloud?
+Game-Caliber I would go with USB or External Back up drive. Cloud is great if you are a Playstation Plus member but you only get so much cloud space. Not nearly enough right now.
should have had this video on youtube under gaming
but its not gaming tho, its electronics
I think its different check this link uk.playstation.com/ps4initialise/
Total Nerd Takeover Sorry one question after i downoloaded the system software for initializing the ps4 if in future if will install an update of the software i will have problems? Thanks very much
No after you install the new drive and use the new software install, get the PS4 running and sign into your PSN account you should have no problems.
thanks very much
I may not have been paying attention, but how do I get all of my games and save data from the 500GB to the 2TB?
I've been wondering the same, transfer data is something I don't know...
+Bryan Candelaria Maldonado Wonder no more my friend, I made a video to help you with that very problem. th-cam.com/video/GlIghVtBvak/w-d-xo.html
That should get you the info you need and if you have questions please hit me up.
this was so helpful. I've seen a bunch of people show the first part(which is the easy part) but your the first one I've seen to show the whole thing. Thanks.
+aquaticpimp You are most welcome. I am glad this video was helpful and grateful that you took the time to watch it.
hey i just followed the tutorial the whole way through but once i got into safe mode and i was tried initialising, it came up saying - " The update file cannot be used. Connect a USB storage device that contains an update file for re installation for version 2.55 or later (CE-34788-0). Any ideas?
mattchoob did you ever find a solution to this??? I'm having the same issue right now it's irritating
mattchoob 7:41
I will have to look into the 3TB drive, it should work if it fits in the PS4.
thanks for doing this it is a very detailed explination of how to update ps4 memory. one of the best ive seen
+Bryan delahoussaye Thank you very much.
It's possible to do this on a brand new PS4 right? Because I want to have 2 TB when I first use the system.
Eric Warner That is possible just follow the steps in this video but without uploaden things to a usb drive
Thanks for this video I was able to perform the upgrade with ease. There are several of these videos out there but yours is the best by far.
Thank you so much Rob, and I am glad this video helped.
After everything do I remove the USB PLZ tell me
You can
I bought a Xbox One, and upgraded the HDD to a 2TB.
Just saying
I've just successfully upgraded my PS4! Thank you for this video TNT!
DarkHpokinsn Gaming You're most welcome, and thank you for watching the video.
Hey how did you keep all your game data?
Roadman Shaq you supposed to save them in your USB stick
Thank you so much!!! You are the only one out there that knows what they are talking about. You are the best man!!! Keep doing what you are doing!
Hello, I did upgrade my ps4 to the 2TB hard drive but now I want to swap my 2TB hard drive back to 500gb. Is it a simple swap or would I have to install the software on my thumb drive? I never cleared the 500gb oem hard drive. Any help will be great. Thanks
Drz Zam no you dont need to do that
You wouldnt need to do that. As the software may have been installed already.
This helped a ton. I was trying for 30 minutes using the "download now" button at the top of the page
+Chompski 98 Glad I could help, I did the same thing my first go round lol.
for those who are british, use the american link for the software for some reason, the british link does not download, it onl downloads 200+ mb where the american link downloads 800+ mb
yes i see what your saying i made the same mistake send me a message and let me know are you at the very bottom of the page or are you on update from computer or something like that. it should say perform a new installation of system software
+A.James Reilly good
WRONG, the British one does exactly the same thing, it all depends on if you have selected the update version or the firmware reinstall version.
Just replaced my PS4 hard drive. This video was a big help. Thank you!
+Janime Lee I am so glad the video helped, enjoy the extra space.
FIRST time I went to the playstation site and downloaded the 3.11 UPDATE file so about 250MB or so,
having set up my new SSHD inside the PS4 I plugged it in.
plugged in the PS4 controller and the USB drive in another USB slot.
I scrolled down to the bottom option of a full install."After a couple mins it read that I do not have the proper file.
OK then, I went to playstations site AGAIN and downloaded a 760MB file for a full install,
wiped the USB clean and reformatted it to one of ONLY 2 options so basically a FAT32 format.
THEN I made another set of folders = PS4>UPDATE>PS4UPDATE.PUP.
tURNED off THE ps4 COMPLETELY, WAITED 10 SECONDS AND STARTED IT THE SAME WAY AGAIN.
Held down on the Power button until it beeped.
Hit the PS button on the controller again, plugged in the USB again,
went to a full install again....
and after a mere 20 secs... cannot find the update file (CE-30774-1) shows up.
+vevans0009 no problem I am glad the video was helpful. Game on my friend
Total Nerd Takeover Will do!
Thank you very much for putting this video together! I followed every step and successfully upgraded my PS4 from 500gb to 2TB. Much Appreciated!! :)
+byr98457yv47yoqo38iv You are very welcome.
I used this video to help me install a new hard drive today, thank you it was a great help.
+James Kerr You are most welcome James, I am glad this video helped you.
Thanks, just went to 2TB and followed your instructions, worked exactly like you described! Well done!
You are most welcome Taggedyou13 and thanks for the follow.
Even a 1TB Solid State Drive is another alternative as a suggestion. However that costs more than a 1TB hard drive.
this guy is awesome he explains stuff very clearly hey TH-cam and people who post instructional videos, pay attention listen to this guy very carefully!!
Thank you very much for the kind words Clinton and for watching my video.
Iain Harrison Yes I have been so happy I did this, lol I have been downloading like crazy now I need to start playing.
Iain Harrison Its my pleasure to help people out. Thank you again for using the video and your kind words.
Thank you man even tho it's been 5 years, I took my old external harddrive, took the harddrive itself out, I got a 2tb PS4. Thanks man
+Subscriber
thank you sooo much budd, used your video to upgrade my ps4 to a 1 tb hard drive, it works great, really appreciate it man xD
+Miajan N. You are so welcome
THIS GUY RIGHT HERE.
HERO OF THE DAY
DAMN
SERIOUSLY
THANKS
+Kenna Belt Thank you so much Kenna, and thank you for watching my video.
Just installed a 2tb Samsung seagate 5400. It works a litros better i guess and i have 1.4TB left after downloading all my games and game saves for Only $60!!! Worth it people!
finally after searching for hours on ps website but didn't find it. And then i found you! Thank you very much mate!
+MrShrumpyNuts Your most welcome, I am glad to be helpful.
By the way I love your name PSP PSN that = Awesome!
finding your video really saved me about $4 and a case to reuse the 500gb hd, i may use it in mylaptop and us the 1tb in my laptop in the seagate case... i did find the video helpful just no in the way you intended... lol thanks ! i appreciate it
Awesome glad to have helped in some way. Thank you for checking out the video.
For the destiny taken King ps4, the motherboard from the hard drive is facing up when placed in the tray. :/
Saw this drive today and was thinking if it would be possible to use the drive inside for my PS4. Couldn't believe it was so was inexpensive compared to standalone drives on Amazon
Hey man this was very useful!!! Thank you for using specific information from preventing us to damage the hard drive
+axel uribe You are most welcome, and thank you for watching
axel uribe
Success!!!with the help of your tutorial swapped my PS4 500gb for a 2 terabyte HD and put the 500 in the case(now using it to back up my main computer)thanks for your help.It was a piece of cake thanks to you
Darian Williams was your micro USB formatted to exfat or fat32?
fat32!
+Darian Williams Awesome glad I could be helpful
thanks a lot, I was really worried if I could change it myself, but you make it look so easy that I did, it works great. keep the good work 👍
+Manuel Peña Awesome enjoy that extra space.
+freakyg1981 awesome my friend enjoy the extra space.
Really appreciate the help though with a really simple video that you did, thanks for the help :) Now I not worry about space as my PS4 has 2TB and PS3 has 500GB, thank you!
tetris12367 You are most welcome, IGN is a great site. Lets hope we get a ton more games out of E3 to load up our drives.
Total Nerd Takeover haha yea, already got the witcher 3, battlefront, assassins creed syndicate, uncharted 4, need for speed, mass effect (4), new Hitman, Mirrors Edge, Rainbow 6 Siege and The Division planned
tetris12367 Sweet, I have some of those on my list also. I am really looking forward to see project Morpheus, as long as it's not super expensive.
good video, but I sure hope you've upgraded to using guitar picks over the last few years. picks are so much easier on the plastics, so you don't mangle the sides of an enclosure and it's harder for Seagate etcetera to tell that you've voided the warranty if something breaks and you put the hdd back together and send it back to them
Hi Total Nerd Takeout, Thank you so much for this video, I am over the moon now that I have a bigger HDD. I now have a 2TB Everything worked will Recommend your channel to others who are looking to update there HDD. Thank you
+FallenAngels Thank you so much for the kind words and for sharing my channel.
When I plug my usb with the PS update; it tells me it can't find it. I thought it was because it wasn't the only file I had on there, so I got rid of everything else, and did, but the same thing. My hard drive is a Seagate just like yours. Any thoughts?
+Chris Gajewski yes make sure it's the instal file not the update file. Another thing is to try downloading the Instal file with chrome browser.
My man you are entertaining. Thanks for the info. My kid will think I'm a genius.
I have had no issues with the drive so far after 10 months.
hi sir, I have a question about the PS4 HDD (500GB)
can i use the original PS4 HDD(500 GB) as an ordinary hard driver after i replace it with the 2TB?
i hope you reply,
thanks
Yes you can,
Total Nerd Takeover THNX
mohammed shakir You're welcome.
Very easy to do, when I look at this it makes me wonder how I built my pc for the first time Nov 15. Good stuff
+thebossman222 Thank you
Total Nerd Takeover Really excellent guide. thanks
This video was very helpful!
In researching this, it seemed so complicated, but you made it simple.
Thanks so much!!!
Levi Ann You are most welcome.
great help buddy, thanks for taking the time to make such a clear and simple video :-)
You are most welcome
Thank you for this video and Merry Christmas! I was wondering if you could still initialize the system if you don't have a USB cable from the controller to the console?
+jtwest8 Good question, you need the USB cable to get things rolling.
And what happend to all my save files from the old hhd? How i transfer them to the new hhd?
Hello.Just watch your useful video... ;).Just to make sure, i can put the old PS4 drive in the Expansion closure of the new drive, just teared apart, to transfer the old datas back to the new drive just installed, by putting this old one in the enclosure on usb on the PS4?Many thanks.
hey I watched your video about upgrading your hard drive I see a lot of people back in their PS4 up taking the old hard drive out putting in a new hard drive but you know you never see them create the files the most important thing of the video is to show how to do the files as well not just showing taking out the hard drive and stuff like that
I am definetally buying this :)
Is there anything i need to know about installing that wasnt said in the video?
+nielsvanb I would check out this video I made about backing up your save game data, th-cam.com/video/GlIghVtBvak/w-d-xo.html
Great video! I did all the steps but how do I make the pc read the default ps4 hdd that is now inside my seagate casing?
Unless something on the external connectors got damaged. Are you running Win 7? does the drive power up?
I got to leave another comment for this great video. I just installed mine because of your help. thank you for the detailed video.
+aquaticpimp Thank you so much for the extra comment, enjoy the extra space my friend.
Thank you for taking the time to do this video and the links for everything you need! Did you have to format the new HD or perform any other action with it after taking it out of the box and installing it ( other than taking it out of its enclosure)?
+CleetusVanDamme Your most welcome, and no I did not have to format the new drive.
+Total Nerd Takeover thanks
Just finished upgrading mine. Thank you very much for an awesome walkthrough 😄
+Nick Rodriguez You are most welcome
THANK YOU SOOOOOOO MUCH BRO! we spent hours trying to do this i watched it once it worked thank you so much! your the best and a life savior
+Aura Master you're most welcome glad I could be of help and thank you for watching the video
Thank you for this great video, it's 2018 and still helps me out to replace my hard drive on my ps4...
Very informative video! I have one question. What's the rpm class for that new hard drive? Is it 5400, or 7200?
36conrizzle Thank you, The drive I used is 5400 rpm
Ah, much appreciated : )
You are most welcome, enjoy the larger space I sure do.
used your tutorial clear instructions step by step installing new hard drive a doddle but the USB installing Sony game update to USB ps4updatepup kept getting rejected on ps4 so i noticed there was either 01 or 02 after ps4updatepup so deleted 01 or o2 and bingo works great many thanks for this tutorial much appreciated
+marco S You are most welcome, I am glad the video helped and grateful you watched it.
Hey Chris how do you back up your memory on your ps4 before you swap out for the bigger hard drive
Hello Dream Killer, There are a few ways to save your game data. I found this link that should give you all the PS4 supported options. support.us.playstation.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5228/~/manage-ps4-save-game-data
Let me know how you make out my friend.
Hey I was just wondering if your games that you have on your PSN be deleted cause I have The Last Of Us remastered downloaded off a Card that came with PS4 on it and I dont wanna loose that game..
U can't transfer the game but Sony gives you two downloads for every thing so u can download it one last time on the new hard drive.
Here is a video that may help th-cam.com/video/GlIghVtBvak/w-d-xo.html
You can also mirror you drive to an external then transfer the mirrored data over after new instal. I don't have a video on this yet unfortunately
thanks dude helped alot, btw do you know a way to put your saved video clips back into the ps4? i have my clips backed up into a usb. thanks :D
+phantastic013 That's a good question, I am not sure and will have to test this and look up some information.
Hey thanks for the great video! One of the few detailed videos on this subject. I just subscribed to your channel.
Thank you so much! I was having a mental breakdown for like five hours trying to get this to work.
+William Rivera You're most welcome and thank you for watching the video.
+Dan Payn I just looked up the drive, it looks like it should work. Unless its damaged or something it should work fine.
Think I'll just send it back then, cheers for your help.
Total Nerd Takeover thanks for the reply man. Looks like about an extra $30 for the SSD drive, maybe I should go with that one.
SSD drives are awesome!
thanks for this excelent video, i'll do it for sure. but i have a question, do i have to give format to the HDD before puting it in the ps4 ??
and thanks again!!
Ben Martínez You are most welcome, no you don't have to format the drive.
@@Tnerdt1 could u restore your data from the original ps4 harddrive via the external case
Thank you so much! You have made this super easy and stress free!
+Evil Tiki Dude You are most welcome

Craig Yates No problem in the mean time this link may help get ya started support.us.playstation.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5228/~/manage-ps4-save-game-data
Question sir: If we have all our game data on the Online storage can we reupload on the new harddrive if we just log into our psn and upload it that way? Or do we need an external harddrive to repload everything? I've seen other videos of people doing it with the external but if we have it on the Online Storage will it b alright? Sorry for the long questions.
Why not just connect the 2tb drive to ur pc dl the system install to it then install the hdd in the ps4 and load it? Thats sounds way quicker
spaceMonkeybrains Yeah it would be a lot easier, but I don't think Sony lets you do it. I could not find any info on how to do this with no issues.
great video! are 4gb hard drives possible, too (as long as they're 2,5") ?
+Edgar Wallace Thank you for watching the video, and the answer your question - Yes. Just needs to fit into the PS4
Actually, 4GB is not enough room and if you meant 4TB, then it wont fit as its not 2.5" , it will need an adaptive case for the ps4 that is an aftermarket product made by a third party that sits on the PS4 where the gloss cover goes, I cant remember the make but you can find it on amazon.
ah yeah, i meant 4tb of course!
good to know, so 2tb should do the job aswell, right...thanks!
Yeah 2TB is the highest capacity in 2.5" so far, but if you want 3,4 or 6TB, then you need to buy the adapter kit from amazon, its called the "Nyko Data Bank for Sony Playstation 4 - Upgrade your PS4 Hard Drive"
