At 40 years you'd think that everything in a movie of that age would be dated, yet I watch Trading Places every single Christmas and it NEVER feels "old"...at least not 40 years old. Trading Places and Die Hard...the two best Christmas movies ever made in my book!

I think it’s the one towards the end of the movie, when after Valentine has proven himself,Randolph Duke, who was the one arguing that success has to do with environment, not race, still wants to get rid of him, saying “You think I’d let a nigger run the company?”, Showing that in the end he was just as racist as his brother. Unfortunately that scene has since been censored, but it really proves the whole point of this wonderful anti racism movie.
I think the best scene is the one that really proves the point of the movie,it’s when after Valentine has proven himself and Mortimer pays Randolph the $1 bet, they then discuss if they are going to send Valentine back to the streets, and Randolph (who is supposed to be the less racist of the two ) says “Of course! You think I’d have an N word run the company!” Showing that in the end he is still a racist. The scene doesn’t work as well now that you cannot say that word,no matter what context you use it in,not even in an anti racism movie. Same thing with Aykroyd in black face on the train
Still one of my most favorite movies, along with Blazing Saddles and the Fifth Element. Comedy is good and these movies and many others will be as fresh 50 years from now. Awesome movie !

And execs had to have Pryor because he was a Black performer who managed to make it despite the Hollywood system, so then it became "no one will go see a Black actor we don't already all know" therefore perpetuating the problem. And they could only think of Benny Hill for a comedic Englishman? These people get rich despite having this little imagination.

Well, true measure of a successful classic is on full display in the the comments by the type of comments. A good movie gets the usual praise and adulations from the fans, comments like, “Great Movie”, “One of the best”, “great cast” and on and on and so forth…BUT the true measure of greatness as shown by the above comments are the types of praise, in which commenting strangers all come together with the unintentional result of, in a way acting like like friends and acquaintances sharing their favorite moments and lines, reliving the movie scene by scene with each other as though we had all literally just stepped out of the theater on the original night of its release repeating our favorite lines and moments with the same level of heartfelt joy we experienced so long ago. Now that is the true measure of a great film. To feel nearly the same emotions and the joy of sharing them with others after so many years have past. True thanks to ALL involved with this film and the joy, entertainment and memories it created and brought to so many.
I love Denholm Elliot in this film. When I first saw it as a quite young man, naturally Jamie Lee caught my adolescent attention and held it for some time. She still does, of course! But on many, many re-watchings, my appreciation for the work that Denholm Elliott did as Coleman the butler rises every time. He is so mellow, so under-stated, yet his micro-expressions are on point every single time. Two of my favorites: When he is pretending not to know his old boss Winthorpe and is about to close the door on him. He is very stern, and plays his role (I refer to Coleman playing the role of someone who doesn't know Winthorpe) so convincingly: "Coleman? There's no Coleman here. You've made a mistake." But just before he closes the door, there is a flash of pity on his face, of self-disgust, of "my old boss Winthorpe may be an asshole, but my real bosses the Duke brothers are major total assholes; I hate myself for doing this terrible thing to Winthorpe, who may be a snob, but doesn't deserve this." All said with a single expression in a fraction of a second before he closes the door. It is all written on his face, and you can tell. Brilliant acting! Then near the end of the film, as they are hatching the plot to get back at the Dukes. Two words: "Egg nog?" Decades of resentment, class warfare, pent-up frustration boiled into two seemingly innocuous words, delivered with more vitriol than they have ever held before. Denholm is a genius.
The two most best Eddie Murphy movies ever made is Trading Places, and Harlem Nights hands down!!! And every time they both are on I watch them over, and over again.

Every performance is literally spot on. The movie feels timeless. I’ve watched it over and over the decades and it holds its weight brilliantly. No doubt generations will appreciate love and laugh this masterpiece.
I was sitting on the bench in front of a 7-11 at 2am, very drunk, eating my microwave 7-11 hotdog. About halfway through, I started eating the cellophane plastic that was rolled down. I immediately thought of Winthorp eating the salmon and beard. I started to laugh out loud. The more I thought about it the more I laughed. No one would come near me.
Eddie at his funniest. One of his best movies. Jamie and dan are just as good. Great movie with an even better cast. Thanks for sharing. Made me wanna watch the film again now 😂
Sir John Gielgud in “Arthur” and Denholm Elliot in “Trading Places” proves that English actors are perfect for Butler roles for the Nouveau Riche of America in films.
Indeed. They approach the roles of a butler with the haughtiness and perspective that regardless of their status as working-class 'servants', they hold an air snobbish disdain for their employers (Arthur, Todd) and their boorishness. Denholm had barely hidden loathe for Todd / Akroyd and some paternal concern for Billy Ray Valentine / Eddie Murphy, trying to help Billy navigate this new environment without becoming the a-hole Todd was.
Serious moment: These two lines in the movie are quite profound and always overlooked. Billy Ray: What if I can't do this job, Coleman? What if I'm not what they expected? Coleman : Just be yourself, sir. Whatever happens, they can't take that away from you.
The scene in this film that gets me is when they were explaining the commodities market to Eddie Murphys character and one of them mentioned Pork bellies. Pork bellies which make bacon and you might find in a bacon and lettuce tomato sandwich. Eddie Murphy looks straight at the camera he doesn't say anything just the expression on his face cracked me up.
That was Don Ameche that said turn those machines back on , I remember seeing him with Henry Fonda in some movie about Alexander Graham Bell and the Telephone and Don Ameche played Watson And I think Jimmy Belushi's first film , he was in the gorilla suit until they stole it and put that guy Mr. Beeks inside of it
Where Jamie Lee Curtis's apartment was located has changed a lot. Every time I see the movie I re-live how run down South St. west of 7th St was. I like to watch Blow Out, another great Philly film from that era, to see how grimy Center City was back then. I've lived here since 1970, so I've seen plenty of positive change.

Eddie at his funniest. One of his best movies. Jamie and dan are just as good. Great movie with an even better cast. Thanks for sharing. Made me wanna watch the film again now 😂
This movie is a legend. Until now I keep watching this movie over & over!
3 comic talents. 3 great stars! John Landis always had the talent to understand big mega hits
This is one of my favorites of all time. Classic from day one. We need more movies like this.
41 yes later Dan is still making movies. Just saw the new Ghostbusters yesterday.
Jamie-Lee topless made my 10 year old eyes pop out like a Loony Toons cartoon.
Same with me but it was not my eyes that popped out.
@@mediavideos2176 was that before she was supposedly a man, or did activia. Shes a legend
the best fun bags in the world!
Our VCR of Titanic staring Kate Winslet was somehow always on the Naked-on the -couch scene! It was I dream of Jeannie was my fix
they simply were/are perfect!
@@reimourrpower9357 Who the F is Todd? Akroyd's character was named Louis Winthorpe III.
Serious moment: These two lines in the movie are quite profound and always overlooked.
Billy Ray: What if I can't do this job, Coleman? What if I'm not what they expected?
Coleman : Just be yourself, sir. Whatever happens, they can't take that away from you.
💯
I have always revered that quote
🙌🏼
@@gghostrrider Same here, it's so sweet, beautiful and profound. ❤️
It's good advice.
Sounds like you guys are a couple of bookies!
I told you he'd understand.
6:42 Acting ability, check. A compassionate heart of gold, check. One of the greatest racks in Hollywood history, priceless!
One the best movies ever, I still have the VHS tape
Oh, Coleman! I had the most absurd nightmare. I was poor and no one liked me.
lol
It was the Dukes it was the Dukes

This film was outstanding, very underrated. " Your brother?" "Fu*k him! Turn those machines back on !"
@Ian Knight ok
That was Don Ameche that said turn those machines back on ,
I remember seeing him with Henry Fonda in some movie about Alexander Graham Bell and the Telephone and Don Ameche played Watson
And I think Jimmy Belushi's first film , he was in the gorilla suit until they stole it and put that guy Mr. Beeks inside of it
One of my favorite Christmas movies. When I moved to Philadelphia 30+ years later I was surprised how many of the locations still look the same.
Still a great movie, and my favorite Eddie Murphy film. Dan Aykroyd was awesome in it, as was everyone else.
Trading Places is my number 2 Christmas movie
"You was in the tank last night bragging on about your..limousine"
" YEAH".
😊 Best Christmas movie ever.
"I am a chain belt Kung Fu, Bruce Lee was my teacher, watch this.....that's called the Quart of Blood technique."
Love that part.
You do that and a quart of blood falls out of a man's body...
@@jgfunk Yo! When they brought you in here and booked you, you was cryin' like a pussy...

"Yeah, the phone in the limo is busted! What is ya, ignorant?"
One of my absolute all time favourite movies. I will never tire of watching this film.
Trading Places is one of my all time favorite movies, I watch it every year around the holidays.
Loved this movie!!
I’ve been watching this movie on a loop lately. Best comedy of the 80’s in my opinion
There's some other great ones, but this is definitely one of them. Completely holds up. I each it every Christmas.
One of the funniest most brilliant movies ever made. So perfectly cast
Whisky, all you want..
In Philadelphia its 50 bucks..
2 fantastic lines Lmao 😂
Absolutely brilliant movie!
This is must see for our family at Christmas time. We all have every lime memorized. The language was raw but perfectly timed.
By far one of the funniest films ever made ... The casting was pitch perfect
complete classic, never gets old
The line that stuck with me is when Jamie says "Please to help me with my Rucksack" lol
Been in trains in Britain, Germany, Greece, Australia and New Zealand and never been asked that, pity!
