I am so excited that you are finally planting a dawn redwood! I have a non weeping Metasequoia, it is about 25 years old and is about 40 feet tall. The trunk is gorgeous and the cones from it look like little roses when they open up. This is a tree that was believed to be extinct until it was rediscovered in China in the 1940’s. My grandfather was a botanist and was a professor at Oberlin College, Ohio and was able to get one of the first specimen dawn redwoods in this country, he planted on his property and was always very proud to show it off on tours of his garden. This tree has a special place in my heart and I am so happy to see you try one out in your pond area!
It's been an incredible Fall here in Virginia too. Just cool enough. I have promised myself not to buy anymore plants until I have the beds cleaned up and mulched. Then I watch you plant and my discipline goes out the window! The rock sitting where you planted the Redwood, is such and eye catching piece. You have the best eye for placing things in the garden.
We have had an incredibly long fall here in North Dakota, too. Forecast for a little snow this week. I just love how Laura knows just where to put every plant.
We moved from high desert Montana to Virginia last May. I've had a culture shock. Every tree we had out West, we planted. The soil is alkaline not sand covered red clay & I got a Very Rude Awakening to Poison Ivy!!🙄🫣
Hi Laura. I have been meaning to send this message for a while. When you said eventually you want to have horses in the field area on the other side of the white fence where you and Aaron do the challenge planters, i had an idea. Why not plant carrots with the flowers when you get the horses so you and the kids can just pull up one or 2 to feed the horses!!!!!!.
Lovely idea. We recently got a rabbit and I'm trying to convince my husband to fence in the garden so she can hop all around and forage on nice days. She will be supervised, of course. I don't want a cat or a hawk to get her. 🙃
Love the way you spaced the yews tighter on the outer curves and wider in the inner. It really works visually, which is what matters! That’s how you do beads and other embellishments when applying to garments and such - balance v. static measurements. Your natural creativity really shines when faced with something like this! ❤
More projects off the list. It continues to amaze me how much you get planted in a short amount of time! The green that will stay in the winter will really pop with your tees. The crab apple tree looks perfect in its new home! Benjamin in his soxs and flipflops and Samantha Grace investigating berries from the tree are the sweetest. Thank you always bringing us along!💚
I’m a toe sock gal so I can still wear my Birkenstocks in winter! 😂 Only at home or a campsite, though - I want comfort but still too vain to do it in public. lol I highly recommend Injinji for anyone wanting to follow my fashionable path! 🤪
The pathway is perfect. The pond area is becoming more beautiful. Watching the entire transformation has been sooo incredible. Thanks for taking us along. Enjoy that fresh bread.
We have a Chinese dawn redwood, not sure variety name, but it’s 40’ and I love it. When we bought our house it had no needles and our realtor , said ,oh there some firewood for you. SO glad I am a procrastinator, and did not have this giant tree cut down, cause it’s started budding green.
It’s wonderful to see how every area is beginning to fill in - one grass, shrub and tree at a time. Planting in November is always fun. It all looks fabulous at this time of year, but I’m excited for springtime when all those new plantings leaf out.
We are having a mild beautiful Autumn here in Chicago, Illinois. I still have annuals in bloom and I can’t bear to toss them. I know we will get a unannounced snow storm soon and they will be toast. But for now the flowers are a joy to see in late November. Thank you for explaining properly symmetry for a winding pathway. Benjamin was living his best life playing in that dirt pile.❤
Here in SE Michigan, some of my annuals are still too pretty to pull, especially the Snapdragons. Maybe I'll cut the best ones and make my Mom a bouquet. That always brightens her 94 year old days.
The walkway is looking better now that you planted those plants 🪴 and the others along the pond. Good to see Aaron help plant the tree it’s always nice to see him and Samatha good job. 👏 ❤
Good morning everyone ☕ Laura, kids, Aaron and plants, beautiful and joyous combination! Love the winding pathway it's going to be beautiful flanked! So exciting! Samantha it's such a cutie 🥰! Benjamin uses the flip flops with socks just like I do 😂 I just don't like the dirt inside my socks though. Have a blessed week 🙏🏻🤗❤️
The trees! The landscapes is becoming beautiful wherever you look! Love the plantings today! The pathway looks really good with the plantings on both sides!
Love my morning coffee with you. Everything is still looking so good for it being mid November. Looking so forward to the lighting display and seeing the Hartley tree going up. Thank you for the joy you bring to my heart and starting my day perfectly.
What a lovely planting day. I think this north garden is my fav of all the properties you have purchased because of the view. You were so landlocked and i feel like the view gives space to breathe. Love all you have done with the whole property.
It is so nice to watch a channel that has more to the garden than just Hydrangea!!! I am so tired of watching everyone plant them in the masses. I hope that your viewers appreciate all the variety that you have to offer. I have grown to not like them because everyone uses them as "The go to." I garden in a large area. Not as large as yours, though I have the land. Just not the man power. You creation is fabulous! I just love watching it come to life :)
your weather has been amazing this year! so much to look forward to in the spring, but first, the light tour coming soon!! love that Benjamin and Samantha have so much area to just play and use their imaginations - what a fun place to be a kiddo... that stream just adds so much, too...i've been starting my day with a video from GA for 10 years, wow! still loving it! 🥰❤ thanks for the video!! 🥰❤
Just discovered Yews this year...working on winter interest and enjoy the soft, flowy texture. Looking forward to seeing how your pathway flanking grows over time.
Wonderful video. Love seeing the plants go in and they will be beautiful. Makes me look forward to the spring. The kids are so sweet and always love seeing them playing and having fun. Have a blessed day everyone.
Long time viewer here... I just wanted to say, "bravo" on your merchandising! I saw that you have Bio-tone easily linked the Garden Answer website from the video. It makes me so happy that by watching your videos every day and supporting your business, we get to see you all grow, flourish, and succeed!
A late relative of mine planted a Dawn Redwood very young and the family finally sold that home plus several treed acres, after the couple's passing around the 1980s. The big lot got logged by new owners including Coastal and the Dawn Redwood along with Firs and Pines. Was in far Northern Calif. but had that Dawn for probably 50+ years. Gorgeous huge tree.
I love seeing your garden change through the years and the seasons. Such a joy! For the yews, another idea is to space them as far apart on the left as you did on the right so that even if they don't line up perfectly you still have matching space between the plants.
We all have our challenges with gardening..yours appears to be keeping things watered. Ours here in Colorado is digging in our heavy clay soil, and keeping things watered but not over watering bc our soil can allow water to pool. If we could only dig holes with the ease you do in your soil....that is gardening heaven!!! Ours is like going through cement....and using those augers would be impossible. We had been amending our soil for 20yrs and it is still a workout to dig a hole. I enjoy watching you do your planting with such ease.
We have had such a nice mild Fall here in IL , and the leaves were beautiful. I just cut a bouquet of roses yesterday. We have rain, and maybe snow this week, so thought I would bring them in. My one yew like that has a lovely shape without any trimming. You might like them that way.
Lawrah, it seems that it would be fun to have some pathways which do not reveal the final destination stage while walking the pathway, and to have some taller than usual plants and bushes above five feet tall, so that as a person travels along may come upon a surprising different area upon the destination? Maybe check out some ideas from Japanese landscaping, I don't really know though. Maybe vary your typical approach of having the three to four different height levels along EVERY PATHWAY? I bet that your don would love having some adventuresome pathways to walk down and bring his friends along to surprise them? And your daughter could also plant some random short plants just to bring some whimsical aspects to the pathways? Maybe try to start integrating some child-like sections into your garden like the guys did along the stream?
I’m in Southwest Ohio zone 6B, and one of our landscapers told me that he plants his trees in December. He said that’s the best time of year in our area because the trees are asleep and the ground isn’t totally frozen and then comes all the moisture.
Amazing that you are still planting. But I agree better in the ground than in the nursery container. Everything is really developing nicely. Your gardens are absolutely gorgeous. Thank you for sharing 🤗❤️
With the yews, on the first bend you used a 2:1 ratio to accommodate the curve. On the second bend you used a 1:1 ratio to match them up. My OCD hates it when I do math but I do wonder why you didn't use the same system with the second bend. As always, watching your garden grow is my daily dose of joy. Thank you.
The Yews and other plantings look great. I agree the section of boxwood hedge and sunflowers need to be removed. It will really open up that planting area.
At 12:31, could you build a little hut over the water stuff with a door to access them, but also make the top into a bird house?? So basically a large bird house hut or brick structure, with the top an actual birdhouse?? I think that would be cute. It doesn’t have to all be plants. I love how you are incorporating more water features, benches and maybe more rocks / boulders too. It sure adds to the landscape. Just an idea 💡
I liked that the mic died..lol We got to listen to nature and the surroundings.. seemed so alive and felt like i was part of it all ... Loved hearing everything around you :)
12:37 Love yews and this hedge lining each side looks great. I wonder if you could mirror the existing Dogwood on the other side to deal with the water access? And then something like grasses on the other side of the water access to hide it completely? Cotoneasters are fantastic low shrubs and they hold a special memory for me. Very nice work, Laura!
We have a dawn redwood that we bought in a five gallon container about 30 years ago. It is starting to buttress now and I love its cones-little mice with stem tails when first picked up off the ground. It is a lovely specimen in the yard. I hope it thrives in your area. We live about 35 miles northeast of Seattle, zone 8b. You’ll ❤️ it if it does. I think you’ve put yours in a great location.
Love your videos every morning with my coffee.... you and Aaron are creating an amazing property that everyone can enjoy and the education the kids are getting is priceless. 🥰
I appreciate the explanation of spacing the yews and walking us through that. I have a lot of curving pathways and usually just start at the end on each side and space a set amount going down, not taking into account whether they match up or not. My last step though is usually to bring in my visualizer (my mom) and ask her to look and make adjustments, which are usually needed. 😂
We are supposed to get our first winter weather this week, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Of course, it will be a wintery mix of rain, freezing rain, snow, and frigid temps. Burrrrrr! Have a great week everyone! ❤
I’d love to see you plant a European weeping beech tree somewhere on your property! They do get big but they aren’t a fast grower. They are so pretty! Zone 4-7!
I love to hear your thought process, Laura, of what goes where and why. I have a 4000 sq ft garden but I am always inspired and I have learned to much from you already 😃
The yew hedges a going to be so good! Looking forward to seeing them mature😍 I really hope you find somewhere on your property for the Maximilian sunflower! I think it is so pretty, I love how the grassy type leaves look all drapey like and how very tall it is! And the yellow color of the flowers is a nice shade of yellow😍
Oh I love the yews ! I think they accentuate the curve in the walkway . I would love to hear the stream when your planting by it and not on sped up . 😊
So ironic, was expecting to see snow😮! But so glad to see planting, especially the Dawn redwood. Which reiterates Laura's garden mantra of plant while you can! It definitely will make Spring so exciting to see your labor of love come to fruition. That rock area by the pond/stream is going to be so gorgeous. You need a shirt saying "Keep on planting " in your store ❤
Good Morning! 🦃 I am still planting too! All I have left are bulbs, but it has been raining! We do need the rain. I am entertaining planting the bulbs in containers. Another reason I am hesitating putting the bulbs in the ground is I am battling a mole!! 😩🍂🌧🌿
I'm sure everything you planted today will be beautiful in the spring. Love the sound of the stream flowing. We have pouring rain here this afternoon, possible snow later in the week. November in Wisconsin.
When placing the first set of yews, they were stepped off so the same distance would be between each of them. With the second set, instead of using the path as the core shape (and stepping them off again), they were based off of the placement of the first set of yews, which shifts the core shape from the path to that first set of yews. I think that's why it feels a little off to us. If both sides had variation with the ebb and flow of the pathway curves, it would feel more natural, but having one side spaced evenly and the other not is a little off-kilter visually.
I have a spring todo list on my phone for all the tasks I don’t want to forget in the garden. Diving some floppy salvia, moving some plants which are getting too much shade, and fungicide application for plant prone to mildew are on it now!
Picked up a black lace elderberry because I'm obsessed with how it looks in your videos! 🌿🖤 But now I have no idea what to do with it. 😅🤷♀️ At least it brings me solace that you plant till you can't dig a hole anymore! 🌱💪 #PlantAddict
Love where you placed each plant, tree, shrub! It's going to be fun to see them in the spring and summer next year when they grow and fill out. You do have a good eye for placement. Fun to see the whole family out there♥️
I can not wait for the pond area and dream stream to fill in, it will be like entering a remote woodsy area. Totally separate from the beautiful gardens and much more rustic, like your camping but at the end of the day you can go sleep in your own bed. 🤭🦃🍁💚🙃
We had 16 inches of snow two weeks ago, and every night is below freezing now, with every day struggling to hit the 50s, so I think our planting is done!
Good morning Laura and Aaron! We have a wonderful fall in central N.C. . Next week starts a cooler trend, but it has been mild and awesome. Love the short reels you have been posting lately! Hugs from N.C..❤
You should try getting a cup plant(silphium perfoliatum) if you think the Mexican sunflower has a big stalk. They get 8 ft tall and where the leaves attach to the stem it forms a little cup for rain water to collect. Great for filling in a large space-I have one that covers the cable box in my yard. 😊
Your whole place is looking incredible, like a piece of heaven!! I've been watching your videos since the beginning and I have to admit, I am now most excited about your horse barn and horses! But I'm an Equine Specialist so I'm a bit biased lol😁🥰🐴
We used to have a lot of cotoneaster in England when I lived their and the birds eat the berries and get drunk and so funny things like thinking their reflection in clean windows are other birds and continually fly into the windows!
I love the Dawn Redwood. I had a witches broom std once but sadly it didn’t survive. It’s the one tree I taught my husband to say in Latin as I just love the way it sounds.
Good morning! It’s been an incredibly mild, dry Fall here in IL zone 5b/6a! We may get snow flurries in Wed/Thurs but I’m not holding my breath. It’s November we should be colder! Love the placement of those evergreens.
The U’s look great just finished off that spot. Everything else looks great also. Just get the last things planted. Nice. Thanks again for sharing this with us.💯💯💯🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
15 years ago at our previous home, we planted a Dawn Redwood tree and it was the most glorious tree I've ever had. The leaves were so soft and a lovely lime green. It grew to an amazing height and shape. Not sure it grows well in all areas but we were living near Niagara Falls, Ontario at the time. i have a picture of it but not sure I can upload it to these comments.
I am so excited that you are finally planting a dawn redwood! I have a non weeping Metasequoia, it is about 25 years old and is about 40 feet tall. Interesting to read about the background on this tree. Looking forward to seeing it grow. Thanks for sharing.
LOVE ours, it’s magical. And huge!
Thank you for sharing your wonderful story.
HI 🍂🌾🌳
Thank you for sharing that trees’ history.
Having coffee with Laura is my favorite way to start my day!
I have Mt Dew 😂
too
Me too ❤
Same ❤
Lunch with Laura. I live in England and that's about the time l receive it. Taking my break from gardening in my small English garden. 🧑🌾
I love that Samantha knows to ask what’s edible.❤
"We can't eat these, right?" I love that she asks, just to be sure!!
It's been an incredible Fall here in Virginia too. Just cool enough. I have promised myself not to buy anymore plants until I have the beds cleaned up and mulched. We have had an incredibly long fall here in North Dakota, too. Forecast for a little snow this week. I just love how Laura knows just where to put every plant.
I'm from South Central Va
We moved from high desert Montana to Virginia last May. I've had a culture shock. Every tree we had out West, we planted. The soil is alkaline not sand covered red clay & I got a Very Rude Awakening to Poison Ivy!!🙄🫣
My discipline also goes straight out the window!

Nice idea.

Lovely idea. We recently got a rabbit and I'm trying to convince my husband to fence in the garden so she can hop all around and forage on nice days. She will be supervised, of course. I don't want a cat or a hawk to get her. 🙃
Great idea! And apples and what else do they like to eat?
Love the way you spaced the yews tighter on the outer curves and wider in the inner. It really works visually, which is what matters! That’s how you do beads and other embellishments when applying to garments and such - balance v. static measurements. Your natural creativity really shines when faced with something like this! ❤
Lovely comment and well-said!

The pathway is perfect. The pond area is becoming more beautiful. Watching the entire transformation has been sooo incredible. Thanks for taking us along. Enjoy that fresh bread.

“Professionals”……that would be YOU in my book!

I’m looking forward to how early Spring will wake up the gardens…one bud at a time.
Will look so pretty this spring. At least you got it all planted before the snow came!
I planted garlic yesterday, finally. I'm not usually this late with it, but life happens. But ta-da, it's raining this morning. ❤
The trees! The landscapes is becoming beautiful wherever you look! Love the plantings today! The pathway looks really good with the plantings on both sides!

I love a winding path! You did an excellent job of placing the shrubs around the path. I love it❤️
Digging out the sunflower is clearly a job for one of Aaron's big machines.
The sugar time crabapple is a beautiful tree! The yews look great too! Your fall colors in your landscape is a treat!

Love the piano/guitar music. My yews are 3 years old now and 4 ft high. They make a nice entrance to the backyard.
Enjoyed your snow pictures on Instagram. In MD we have yet to have a hard frost--none in the forecast through the first week of December!

I LOVE the auger i bought from you bulb planting. Made it SO much easier.
Love dogwoods & redwood trees. So lovely to see you & Aaron plant so many different kinds of trees.
Winter here in Alaska. It isn't playing around anymore. Six degrees tonight.

"Keep on planting " in your store ❤
Good Morning! 🦃 I am still planting too! All I have left are bulbs, but it has been raining! We do need the rain. I am entertaining planting the bulbs in containers. Another reason I am hesitating putting the bulbs in the ground is I am battling a mole!! 😩🍂🌧🌿
This video motivated me to get 4hrs worth of garden work done today! I've been putting a lot of it off for months. Thank you Laura!
Love the pathway and the pots are beautiful. The stream is looking great!
I keep seeing your reel from last night…Snow ❄️
Beautiful plantings! I’m especially interested in seeing what the Dawn Redwood does🤞. Very hopeful that it likes this spot.
Love where you placed each plant, tree, shrub! It's going to be fun to see them in the spring and summer next year when they grow and fill out. You do have a good eye for placement. Fun to see the whole family out there♥️
Love the cotoneaster! Please consider some peacock spikemoss for the pond area! I think it would be stunning!!🤩
The peacock spikemoss looks like it would be a beautiful add to a shade garden. I am going to look for that. Thank you for sharing.
You have such beautiful hair Laura I would love to see a video where you talk about what you do for your hair 😊
Hi Laura 🌺.Very cool video of planting these shrubs and trees are going to be amazing in your garden . Have a wonderful week .🌻🎄🌻
❤❤❤❤
I so enjoy your videos! It is good to note that Yews are incredibly toxic if ingested- hopefully no deer where you live. Love that rock pathway!
Good morning from Delaware Garden Answer friends.
I can not wait for the pond area and dream stream to fill in, it will be like entering a remote woodsy area. Totally separate from the beautiful gardens and much more rustic, like your camping but at the end of the day you can go sleep in your own bed. 🤭🦃🍁💚🙃
I just learned something about the curve and placement of the yews - thank you. I always struggled with this and didn't know why.
We had 16 inches of snow two weeks ago, and every night is below freezing now, with every day struggling to hit the 50s, so I think our planting is done!
I'm still planting too--I still have peppers growing in SW Ohio!
The pots need some evergreen boughs.
☺️ So pretty, love the yews on the walk.
Just saw your insta post about the snow (which was so beautiful!). Hope they had enough time to get acclimated!
Good morning!🌻🐝
I know that’s right! I also planted some more soon as I saw the temperature were going to be 56degrees f, I was stoked! I am in 7b
❤❤😊❤❤❤
Great video today love all the planting today.just really beautiful things
We used to have a lot of cotoneaster in England when I lived their and the birds eat the berries and get drunk and so funny things like thinking their reflection in clean windows are other birds and continually fly into the windows!
This must have been taped before the snow came! Always love your videos!!!❤❤
The trees are looking so very pretty!❤❤
The U’s look great just finished off that spot. Everything else looks great also. Just get the last things planted. Nice. Thanks again for sharing this with us.💯💯💯🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
15 years ago at our previous home, we planted a Dawn Redwood tree and it was the most glorious tree I've ever had. The leaves were so soft and a lovely lime green. It grew to an amazing height and shape. Not sure it grows well in all areas but we were living near Niagara Falls, Ontario at the time. i have a picture of it but not sure I can upload it to these comments.
lol @ 50s being warm weather. Thank you for a nice dose of the stream. 😊
