The Oculus in 1.09d (last patch before synergies and OP runewords) had no drawback. In this patch, the Chance to Cast modifiers on every item was broken and would do nothing. The animation of the spell would activate, but the spell had no effect. So you would never get teleported by getting hit while wielding Oculus
I would teleport to the Act 4 portal and rain meteors down on Meph. Just carpet-bomb the area where Meph is so that it's covered in fire patches and let him sizzle.

Seems like Blizzard has removed every fun thing in diablo 2 since it was launched. Buriza Do Kanyon Bowazons and Firewall Sorcs.... Ahh I remember when I had a Paladin with perfect resists and damage reduction, used to piss off those PvP Firewall sorcs when their walls healed me.
Not in a particular order: 1. Shield Bash Paladin. 2. Shout Barb (basically immortal but took me 20 mins to down Bhaal on Hell). 3. Modding a headless Necromancer (holding his head in his hand). 4. Morph items, transforming into Diablo himself or a Flying Scimitar (from traps in Act II). 5. Jah rune drop in a full game during minion phase before Bhaal and I managed to pick it up. :)
Do you remember the great Blizzard character Rollback? Many years ago, they tried to fix an error and re-install a backup to roll back your account a couple weeks. Also, do you remember the ridiculous defense for unique items! Don't forget the 0 level requirements for unique stuff too. I also remember jewels having more mods available to them.

A fond memory is when we had a period of rollbacks that would seemingly happen randomly from blizzards side. I had that happen just a second or 2 after i had just muled my ultra rare selffound rare dual leech 6/6 ring with lvl req 9... Due to that exact time of the rollback and DC Blizzard actually duped my ring so i had it on the previous toon AND on the toon that i had just muled it to.
I remember entering into a trade with someone. My PC locked, the mouse took over and automatically dropped all my items, exited the game, and restarted my PC. It was fucking crazy. I felt so defeated.
Forgot about uber trist leveling. 1-70 in like 15-20 minutes. 2 hammerdins + smiter + glitch rushed party lol. But I think that was in patch 1.09? 1.10? Then they made the minions from mephistos spawn physical immune i believe, less spawn waves, and little exp thus shutting that down in 1.11 if im not mistaken
Might sound dumb but my biggest memories of this game is rogue encampmen music and just the music from the wilderness outside the camp, always brings back good memories
The WW Barb was my first level 99 character...loved that build back then. Matter of fact I believe he was my first char on bnet as well... a friend of mine gave the Diablo 2 Gam when he got pissed one night and destroyed his computer. I fell in love with the game, but once I discovered online D2 it was a wrap...I was working full time , going to college at night and every spare minute was spent on D2. I had always been an FPS guy before that ( doom, unreal, castle Wolfenstein ) but once I started D2 I never looked back. I made my first char a Barb as folks told me he was the easiest to learn with so I went with it...WW was UNDOUBTEDLY the build back then...you'd see odd builds occasionally like beserk and throw, but i was all about the WW. I got to around 96 or 97 leveling in everyday play, but after that it was endless cow runs. Probably 50% of the games on hell diff were cow runs...moo after moo, cow after cow...watching your xp grow a millimeter after hours of play...when I hit 99 I was ecstatic! Everybody would cheer and congratulate you...it really was a great time in gaming.
Wow this video defiantly explained a lot to me. I recently revisited D2 and some things just didn't feel right. I had not known that so many of my favorite builds were nerfed with 1.10. I was so excited to build my first bowling barb only to get frustrated and switch to leap attack instead. I found the online community so bare that I opted to upgrade my copy of Diablo 3 and give it a second chance since all of the major changes. There is just so much excitement that is missing when comparing unique item drops from legendary items. The necessity of studying an item's modifiers to evaluate it adds a certain connection and bond to the equipment. The Diablo 3 system and it's positive and negative percent simplification destroys the romance of unveiling a powerful item. This core misunderstanding of what made Diablo 2 so enchanting to hold it's player base for years is lost on the new blizzard. Similarly the plug and play abilities of today from the strategic permanent skill tree progression reveals another drawback. In summary there is a trade off I have come to understand that the diablo series has shown me. The less that a game demands of the player's ability to understand the rules as well as plan and commit to a strategy; the less decisions have any importance to the player which impedes personal investment and involvement to a game. The benefit this provides is a wider marketable audience. An example of this phenomena would be in the comparison of two extremes. Dungeons & Dragons with it's small player base who are overwhelmingly devout and enriched by the game. Where as Candy Crush Saga has a massive worldwide audience of players who move on after a short time with little more than time spent playing. I spent 5 years every day excited to play diablo 2 and only once since then has a game held me for longer.
You totally forgot about the old anni/torch trade system, we couldnt put them in inventory so we had to go to act 5 or 1, drop it on the ground in some place and then just rotate, there was also fun scamm system with it ^^ good video !

I remember when loot dueling was still a thing. And who else remembers when they introduced the alternate weapon set ('w' hotkey?) and it allowed a glitch where you could equip two weapons over each other. It made it so both weapons, damage and all effects, were applied at the same time.
Some memories which i remember as a kid: The Unique Monster(forgot the name) at the Inner Cloister killing you right when you were about to get the Waypoint (Jerk move by Blizzard but i don't understand why it was removed from the game completely) Spending 15 Mins on OpenBattleNet trying to find a game that lets you in The Old Gem sound before LoD came along (Nothing against ether of them but it's just weird that they would change it)

I remember the old times where you were pretty much invulnerable as a necromancer if you used a blood golem and iron maiden. As long as your blood golem was attacked by melee enemies, it would heal you so much that you couldn't die unless you died in one hit. I think that was changed with the expansion, though. When the expansion hit, you had to restart everything, since all the things that were good (like rare lances for whirlwind barbs) were pretty much useless afterwards.
The Grandfather sword, and Windforce were the most rarest AND wanted items at the time. If you had either one... you're like the coolest kid in school lol.
Zero level restriction on uniques is probably the least mentioned thing i remember. Lvl 1 chars with 2 soj, tarn, twitch, eye and assorted bs inbetween. That was a pre chant era new char build. Other than just standing at hell cow portals for xp.
I remember playing strafeazon and struggling until I found skystrike and feeling OP and again when I found kuko/goldstrike arch and then finally the epic .08 timeframe windy off pindle. Those moments beat out getting faith and the other OP runeward armors and weapons.
Correct me if im wrong, but in 1.09 you could just stand still at cow lvl entrance and still lvl up, but in 1.10 they changed it, that you can't be too far.
Good times! I remember when corpse explosion where abit overpowered, but so much fun to use when playing with friends, instantly cleared big masses of mobs :D
I fell for the scam that you referenced in #9...I remember that dark day lol. I was intoxicated and I thought the guy was legitimately going to show me how to duplicate items in-game...little did I know, he tricked me to dropping EVERYTHING. Thus, as a consequence, I euthanized my Druid forever...out of rage. Spamming the scammer with text did nothing lol. I sort of deserved it though...so I can't complain too much.
to my shame i was just naive, when it happened to me. I thought, the Bnet was full of helpful, nice people. I still remeber how long it took to die 12 times. And how excited i was right before i died for the last time and dropped everything.
missed the Hammerdin (which aren't nerfed still); the old Skeleton+mage number caps for necros; and the dreaded Iron Maiden on Oblivion Knights, they were even more iconic than the sorc builds
How about the fact that your imbune quest actually yielded a high damage rare item? A lot of people would make characters to get to level ~30-40ish, just for the imbune quests. They would imbune a lance, executioner sword, martel de fer, or armor to get "godly" rare stats and damage...
One thing I think that should have been here, was power lvling was possible in hell cows even at lvl 1. Also Ancients did not have a level requirement back then.
The gem does actually something.. if you spam it until u get the perfect gem message u can go back to your charakter screen and change the positions of your charakters..
I *really* miss the old days. WW barb, nova/orb sorc. the first time my undergeared sorc found an occy from meph, scamming scammers, and the lovable cow level.

This was my favorite all-time game. Played it for several years and could never get bored. There was always some new PvP character you had to farm, scam and trade your way into equipping with perfect gear. Anyone remember full dext bowazon? Sigh

i played from release until maybe 1-2 year in of expansion but never switched just quit after some update stole all my items. saddest day of my youth. i got murdered and stripped. ty so much for these vids !! when i played.... soj was currency and if you knew guys who duped you were a king amongst kings and could get anything you needed.

I remember the old times where you were pretty much invulnerable as a necromancer if you used a blood golem and iron maiden. As long as your blood golem was attacked by melee enemies, it would heal you so much that you couldn't die unless you died in one hit.
I think that was changed with the expansion, though. When the expansion hit, you had to restart everything, since all the things that were good (like rare lances for whirlwind barbs) were pretty much useless afterwards.
The Grandfather sword, and Windforce were the most rarest AND wanted items at the time. If you had either one... you're like the coolest kid in school lol.
Zero level restriction on uniques is probably the least mentioned thing i remember. Lvl 1 chars with 2 soj, tarn, twitch, eye and assorted bs inbetween. That was a pre chant era new char build. Other than just standing at hell cow portals for xp.
I remember playing strafeazon and struggling until I found skystrike and feeling OP and again when I found kuko/goldstrike arch and then finally the epic .08 timeframe windy off pindle. Those moments beat out getting faith and the other OP runeward armors and weapons.

Correct me if im wrong, but in 1.09 you could just stand still at cow lvl entrance and still lvl up, but in 1.10 they changed it, that you can't be too far.

Good times! I remember when corpse explosion where abit overpowered, but so much fun to use when playing with friends, instantly cleared big masses of mobs :D

I fell for the scam that you referenced in #9...I remember that dark day lol. I was intoxicated and I thought the guy was legitimately going to show me how to duplicate items in-game...little did I know, he tricked me to dropping EVERYTHING. Thus, as a consequence, I euthanized my Druid forever...out of rage. Spamming the scammer with text did nothing lol. I sort of deserved it though...so I can't complain too much.
to my shame i was just naive, when it happened to me. I thought, the Bnet was full of helpful, nice people. I still remeber how long it took to die 12 times. And how excited i was right before i died for the last time and dropped everything.
But after having said all that, I bet you would love to relive those days right? Life was so much simpler then...ah well.

How about the fact that your imbune quest actually yielded a high damage rare item? A lot of people would make characters to get to level ~30-40ish, just for the imbune quests. They would imbune a lance, executioner sword, martel de fer, or armor to get "godly" rare stats and damage...
Hero Editor can make legit Godly items. Nothing in the vanilla game even comes close. 😏
One thing I think that should have been here, was power lvling was possible in hell cows even at lvl 1. Also Ancients did not have a level requirement back then.

The gem does actually something.. if you spam it until u get the perfect gem message u can go back to your charakter screen and change the positions of your charakters..

I can't believe nobody has mentioned the oblivion knights casting Iron Maiden an eventually removing it all the melee characters that literally shit themselves in the chaos sanctuary.
At least you could get help to pass that.

I was only like 12 when 1.10 released, so it's cool to hear about how the game was different.
This was my favorite all-time game. Played it for several years and could never get bored. There was always some new PvP character you had to farm, scam and trade your way into equipping with perfect gear. Anyone remember full dext bowazon? Sigh

Corpse popping was great lol. I remember trolling some guy into losing all his items, but right when I went to go pick them all up the battery on my mouse died.

Dammit everything about this game was just perfect, so many people spent so many months grinding through all the characters, quests and loot. gosh I really do miss it. Never again will we witness this truly epic gameplay.

i played from release until maybe 1-2 year in of expansion but never switched just quit after some update stole all my items. saddest day of my youth. i got murdered and stripped. ty so much for these vids !! when i played.... soj was currency and if you knew guys who duped you were a king amongst kings and could get anything you needed.

i remember occy rings and hex charms. i never used the charms but i did get a few of the occy rings given to me. they werent that big of an advantage tho tbh.

my best memories was on HC, when everybody did some crazy socio-techniques to kill others, Where every public game was soo risky to play, when lvl9 charger, or corpse explosion necromancer RIP all in baalruns :P man that was soo much fun, Softcore never had that adrenaline.

Running cows with a multishot zon, hopefully with a Windforce. Buriza or Eaglehorn were fun too.
You forgot back in 1.09 when there were 2 socket shakos, 4 socket arkaine's valor, 6 socket windforce, cliffkiller ammy, etc all filled with 40/15's. Those were some good times. Bowazons ran the show back then

I remember v1.09 like it was yesterday. it's amazing that Diablo2's playerbase was growing even after the release of 1.10 so a lot of people haven't experienced the game as it was in 1.09.
