I have two trucks. One for food, another for beverages, and signed a lease to open a stall in summer. My advice is to start small-farmers markets things like that. That way, you become familiar with a food flow and set up. This also helps you figure out the logistics of your truck. It also helps you decide if you really want to do this. It further helps seeing how much sales you can generate. A fabricator will lay this concept out for you so long as you tell him where it will all go. You tell him or her what you cook and the layout, and he conceptualizes the rest. Do all the other things in the meantime (SafeServe exam, DOH inspection, lease a commissary, business licensing, propane inspection, posters, menus, payment processing system, establish a social media presence). When the truck is done, get it wrapped. Then go. I don’t believe in staying one place all the time. You need to see where you can generate the most sales. Anyway, this type of work is grueling and labor intensive. To do this, you MUST be committed.
We appreciate the insightful information Dogsalway. This will be valuable to some of our viewers. Do you feel state location has a lot to do with the success of a food truck? What area are you located in?
@@UpFlip I'm in DC. It could be various factors that could make or break your success. Oversaturation of the market. Too many options for the same type of food provided. No differentiation.
@@UpFlip we provide a specialized type of food that is not readily available in my immediate area and definitely not available via food truck. This helped with our edge. There was a lot I learned from the food markets. As a matter of fact, I get a lot of New Yorkers (Brooklynites to be exact) comparing my food to what they get in New York. They are my biggest critics. They also help me hone in on my failures and to do things better. Mistakes also helps you. It's not always bad. I always suggest to push beyond your mistakes and learn from it.
This is my retirement plan. I'm only 30 so I got years to go, but I love cooking. I'm currently a carpenter, but have worked as a chef in some down time during the winter, and quite successfully, however I never really stuck with it because of how unstable it can be. I usually end up in a kitchen temporarily to fix issues, kinda like kitchen nightmares.
@@UpFlip I'm not sure really. Even at home I make everything from scratch, so I would like to do that as much as possible. My step father is Italian and he left a great impression on me for proper Italian food, like what pasta to use for what sauce. Food is always evolving, so it's hard to say, but I would like to have more of a pop up restaurant on wheels and share the romance of Italian food with people, but the prep time for volume really insists on being a proper restaurant. What do you think?

@The Greek Physik yes, they kind of skipped over that.. He asked what is your sales, what is your net profit, and he answered we did 417k last year. No follow up on what that actually meant. So 417k in sales is nothing considering the cost of running the business.

Thanks for creating this and sharing his story- super helpful for those of us getting into the industry! Just one note on the production- I felt like the interviewer was always jumping on the other guys words and it made me kind of tense throughout watching. If he just asked a succinct question and then listen to the full answer without jumping in, I think it would’ve flowed much better! Little thing though, overall, nicely done!
My plan is to start a Vegan Food Truck business! Not many of those around. I would do a trailer myself and buy another Sierra Denali HD to pull it with. I wouldn’t do a box 📦 truck because it may break down and now you can’t do business. I know for a fact and sure that my pick-up will always be running and if it doesn’t run for some odd reason, I will just rent a pick-up and keep it moving. I’ve seen someone had a cool container trailer too
You can do it even cheaper than what he said, you can get into a high roof van and mini house trailer. KEEP IT SIMPLE starting out. And make sure it’s tasty
I’m a Marine Corps veteran too. And searched this video because I’m about to take on this dream of mine. I’m very nervous but this is something I want.
@@UpFlip , I am figuring or guessing it is not like running a franchise like McDonalds or Subway where the food can be ok or a little bit above and you can be highly successful in the food truck business. It appears the food truck business can be more demanding in that sense. I could also be wrong in this.
@@UpFlip , I am also thinking forget about starting a food truck business if I am not a highly skilled cook or did not graduate from culinary school. This kind of makes me think of the Subway story . Which would defy the rule of having a culinary background or cooking experience. From Fred Deluca’s book Start Small and Finish Big he mentioned or indicated he did not have cooking experience not training from culinary school.
When I think about what he said. The restaurant and fast food places . The best places have huge portion. And good food I’m full. Are the better places I remember.
@Epic itunes How does that even make sense. If all you have is a food trailer why on earth will you only profit 40k out of 400k/yr? what is your breakdown expenses? Especially if the owners are the ones working the truck.
@Epic iTunes so your saying the expenses all over 90% also location is key you had a terrible location, terrible product, or terrible pricing maybe all three
Last year I started with a ice cream bike, which was doing ok, and in the middle of it breaking down I learned about snow cones, snow cones kept me going, I put a deep freezer on a trailer and pulled it behind my car this year and last year, 2 months ago I bought a handi van and I'm turning it into a ice cream truck, I recently added fresh Lemonade and my plan next year is to add hot dogs and taco in a bag with a slush machine hopefully. I set a goal of 250$ on a regular day of sales and 1000$ a day for events, although my season is wrapping up shortly I have goals for next year I'm hoping to achieve.

I am thinking about a new type of restaurants : eating-spots, in eating-spots, food keeps changing, chefs also rotate, this is opposed to current restaurants, thanks to this rotation of food and chefs, eating-spots are way more powerful than restaurants, along with that, there is an app, people vote for the food that will be cooked in the next days, menu is influenced by the live input of the people via an app
Semper Fi!! Old Corpsman here, newly retired - worked in restaurants all my life. Good cook and we're looking into a food truck. Can you talk a bit about obtaining a spot or stay mobile all day?
Hi Thomas! Thanks for sharing, we have a blog post that dives deeper into the food truck business: www.upflip.com/blog/how-to-start-a-food-truck-business
Here's the reality of a food truck. You are going to find it EXTREMELY difficult to find locations. There are strict zoning laws. And forget about getting into fairs and festivals. They're all sewn up. Also many municipalities will require you to have a LICENSED "brick & mortar" facility as your commissary kitchen, for food prep, storage and cleaning. The inspectors will ask "Where are you getting your water from? What are you doing with your waste water? Where are you storing your bulk ingredients? Where are YOUR toilet facilities during your working hours? No you can't operate 100% from your truck. Think long and hard before you spend your hard earned money.
Who told you this information? Most of what you said is just not true in Rhode Island.....Fairs and festivals are begging vendors to show up! Permits are a few hundred a year. Health inspectors do not ask where the water come from and you only have to deal with them yearly unless you are at an event and at that point the festival is responsible for water.....and you are NOT required to have a commercial kitchen and you absolutely can run it 100% out of your truck!
I want to start one. Rolling fast food. But cheap meals, like sloppy joes, greek burgers and fries, grilled cheese, burritos of course, pizza slices, kool- aid.
You can do it Moneynversleeps. We believe in you and we think this is a great idea. 😀👍💪You just have to take it one step at a time. Have you started a business plan?
@@UpFlip THANKYOU! I did start planning, eliminating fries and pizza, adding chips and water and hitdogs, aiming for cheap, fast, easy to put together. Probably start as a cart peddler. Hope your success keeps striving, thankyou for the encouragement!
Okay so when you go to the health department do that require taking a class?...Do you have to have a degree in cooking in order to start?..Do all that money you have to pay up front or can you do a loan?
you should absolutely get a servsafe certificate. besides that I'd recommend having a solid menu with specific recipes and feedback from multiple different people. money wise, if you have a business plan you can go to the SBA or a bank for a loan, just make sure they dont screw you over!
Mel broke this question down pretty well. To add on, Kyle actually got a culinary management degree. You'll have to check with your area to see if that's required. As far as the health department and questions related to that, it really depends on the city where you'll be starting your business. So do a little research and you can learn more for your specific city.
Each state can have different rules and county to county within a state can have slightly different rules. The best rule of thumb is, make an appointment with the health department. Bring your menu that you plan on using. Then they can tell you what is required in your trailer/truck for that menu. Many counties have a downloadable pack that gives you the rules and applications to fill out.....we had a local bbq guy spend over 50k on a trailer then wasn't approved by the health department because the drain boards on his sink weren't the right size. most places also require a trucker to have a commissary as well. a place to wash your dishes, dump your grey water, store extra supplies ect ect. some places will require you to park your rig at the commissary that way you can plug your rig into power. keep in mind he is in the pacific northwest. so even in the summer time its cooler than most place. It didn't appear that he had a/c on his unit. but in all honesty the hood vent will suck it out as fast as the a/c put it out. so when its 90 degrees out its at least 20-30 degrees hotter in that trailer. I didn't hear a generator running either. those LOUD generators are annoying to listen to and many places are cracking down on them as well. the whisper quiet generators for a trailer that size can run $7-$10k just depends on your electricity load needed.
I have been considering starting one I planned on stopping by church on my way home to pray about it today and in this video it started in a church parking lot. Lord I know the devil is capable of signs just as you are and I will pray tonight at church that I can decipher if the Lord put these in my path or if it was the enemy.
Very inspiring. I’m currently building my 16ft enclosed trailer from the ground up. I’m so glad this popped up in the algorithm. I ❤ the transparency on the marketing side, because running the show requires so much of your time.
How does the parking situation work? Are you allowed to park in any parking lot with other businesses? Do you have to seek permission? Parks or shopping centers?
It really depends and varies from place to place. Most of the time, you'll have to seek permission from the owner of the property and come upon an agreement.

"You are not a restaurant" is the best way to go about this business.. I am starting my food truck also and I had a couple people tell me that we needed a sitting area or benches or somewhere they could eat around the truck and I told them that is not the idea of this we have to get them in and get them out just like you said. The more time they spend there the less money you make off of them one guy could order a burrito and a water and sit there for an hour which in that hour you could serve 20-30 people..so its basically a waste of space ..anyways ..love this story and i hope you keep going higher and higher .
Good luck with your food truck Jerry! What type of truck will it be and where will it be located?
@@UpFlip i will be located in dallas texas. I will posting my journey on my page soon.

Your production is on point! Well done on the whole story and opportunity behind the food truck biz!
Thank you, so glad to hear that!
Great job man. I’m building my first food trailer. Bought an old rv trailer only. The rv has been torn down. Just restored the rims and put new tires. Floor is next. Then framing.
How wonderful to hear Chon. We're very happy for you. 😀💪🏼⭐Congrats! This is an exciting time for your business and we can't wait to hear updates. Please let us know if you have any questions along the way.!?⭐⭐⭐⭐
I haven't watched this video yet but I'm going to give you the most important and #1 tip you need to know MAKE SURE YOUR FOOD IS GOOD!!!!!!
Trust in your product! I love it!
What type of Food Truck would you start if you could Gage?
@@UpFlip I'm not sure really. Even at home I make everything from scratch, so I would like to do that as much as possible. My step father is Italian and he left a great impression on me for proper Italian food, like what pasta to use for what sauce.
Food is always evolving, so it's hard to say, but I would like to have more of a pop up restaurant on wheels and share the romance of Italian food with people, but the prep time for volume really insists on being a proper restaurant.
What do you think?
@@WeAreClaves food service is high risk, truck or restaurant and with lot of cost and obstacles
@@alp.9672 Oh I know, I've been a chef before. There's a reason I'm no longer one lol.
I do exteriors now, roofing, siding, soffits and what have you.
@zezekz4245 Haven't exactly started it yet. Still doing the same work lol.
I did however find someone willing to let me cook with him in his food truck every now and again, been a pretty awesome experience, especially with the summer rolling up here. He's also allowed me to add a couple of my own recipes to his menu, which have been doing really well.
I just won a bid on a public auction yesterday for my truck. If you want a truck...contact your local school district, colleges, local transpo and ask where do they send their old fleet. You can also purchase a reasonably priced truck from Uhaul truck sales.
That's great! Are you planning on running a food truck business with it?
@@UpFlip Yes, that is exactly what I am going to do. Maybe you can feature me on your show when I'm up and running 😊

Hi! I’m living in Finland. Just in my mind idea came that why not I start food truck business and I start searching TH-cam video and I find this video. I am happy to hear hope I can do also something special in my mind. Thanks 🙏 for the this lovely video ❤️
Interviewer needs to talk less... didnt even let my man finish a thought
Am planning to open one soon and this was sooo inspiring thank you ❤️
Go for it! We wish you good luck in this business venture :)
@The Greek Physik Sir, thanks for the advice. I need your consultation. Please ping your info.
@The Greek Physik yes, they kind of skipped over that.. He asked what is your sales, what is your net profit, and he answered we did 417k last year. No follow up on what that actually meant. So 417k in sales is nothing considering the cost of running the business.
Open it in my country.
Trailers and food trucks are a good way to start and learn the business and customers. Started our business 2 years ago.. - Tasty WAVEZ Italian Ice- with a raggedy old trailer. Now we have a store front and looking to open a second location. Still learning how to run it more efficiently everyday. My piece of advice is JUST SHOW UP. Some days are good, some days are bad. But it's all a part of the learning process.
Yeeeea...I wish I could’ve gotten more from the Vet owner, but he kept getting interrupted. It was irritating. It’s a great topic! Just let the people talk more often. They love to tell their story. Just allow them to do it 🤷🏾♂️
I think the perception of a food truck has definitely changed, before some people would call them a roach coach and viewed as unsanitary.
Those burritos look very tasty, I bet they're very filling as well!
You bet!
That’s the point!!
Carbs
Thanks for creating this and sharing his story- super helpful for those of us getting into the industry! Just one note on the production- I felt like the interviewer was always jumping on the other guys words and it made me kind of tense throughout watching. If he just asked a succinct question and then listen to the full answer without jumping in, I think it would’ve flowed much better! Little thing though, overall, nicely done!
Glad you think it was useful. Thanks for the tip as well, we'll keep this in mind!
Thank you, I will improve :)
thank goodness the guest speaker stole the show. thanks for the interview😎
Was looking forward to hearing the guys story and yet all I heard was the host speaking over him
My plan is to start a Vegan Food Truck business! I’ve seen someone had a cool container trailer too
What a great idea! We hope it'll do extremely well for you. Good luck!
Wow so inspiring...sorta felt like it was just me going through some of those rough days but I'm not quitting I'll make it. I have a DREAM damn it
Thats right! Never give up, just push through it, stay strong and everything will be good!
You can do it even cheaper than what he said, you can get into a high roof van and mini house trailer. KEEP IT SIMPLE starting out. And make sure it’s tasty
These are wonderful ideas Plate lunch!😀Thank you. Is this how your company started out?
Bro please when u ask questions let the guy speak..ur fallin in his story all the time. When u ask a question just shut up and let him explain..
I’m a Marine Corps veteran too. And searched this video because I’m about to take on this dream of mine. I’m very nervous but this is something I want.

I maybe wrong but it appears to really help to have a big culinary background to make a food truck business successful
You are correct Parag. Being a great chef or cook and a highly trained successful culinary artist can go a long way in the food truck industry.
Those are the places you leave the happiest!
Im broke right now but this is going to be me in 2 years
Awesome mindset! Don't give up, you got this :)
@Epic itunes How does that even make sense. If all you have is a food trailer why on earth will you only profit 40k out of 400k/yr? what is your breakdown expenses? Especially if the owners are the ones working the truck.
@Epic iTunes yea I want to hear how you broke down 400k to only 40k ROI
So many will watch this video and sink themselves starting one in hopes of money and success , in you not in this off the love of the game 1st then you failed before you've even started my friend .
Do what you love , and the rest will follow
Such great advise, thank you Nicholas! And we agree! Serve the customer and do what you love :)
While this might be true I believe luck has to do alot with it too. I've seen food trucks where the food is shit and they have lines of people waiting to order . The people running it seem to only want money and are not doing what they like . They serve crappy food and have reached success. What do you have to say to that ?
@@dreameraag5474 I say if you're just in it for the money it will soon become just a job and thats when everything goes to shit eventually word will spread about there quality and their good choice in real-estate will soon be meaningless.
@@dreameraag5474 just my opinion, also I have my own truck and brick and mortar location so I'm speaking from my personal experience aswell
@@nicholasgonzalez6104 I mean I get what you are saying but all those places are still open selling all the crappy food. The people change but the place is still there selling crappy food
I FREAKIN’ LOVE THIS HOST & SHOW!
The $15/hr wage is going to crush a lot of small businesses across America. Especially after so many were forced to close for a year. It’s sad.
This comment is a year old but 15hr is nothing in this day an age. You wonder why people don’t want to work in food service? Hard ass work for little money in return, shitty schedules and no benefits for many. Let them fail o well
Shout out to Colima's from Oceanside. That was my weekend go to when stationed in Pendleton! If he brought this menu style to WA, then he is doing the Lords work!
Made me consider getting into a food truck business 😅 great video and very informative
Awesome! Thank you!
I agree with the last comment when you interview people stop interrupting and let them finish that's the whole point of the interview
I am thinking about a new type of restaurants : eating-spots,
in eating-spots, food keeps changing, chefs also rotate,
this is opposed to current restaurants,
thanks to this rotation of food and chefs, eating-spots are way more powerful than restaurants,
along with that, there is an app,
people vote for the food that will be cooked in the next days,
menu is influenced by the live input of the people via an app
That sounds like an amazing idea! I love the aspect of an app and voting. Sounds really unique!
@@UpFlip haha I agree with you, the concept is really nice,
I also made this infographic to give more details, here : ibb.co/F7GZxXd

It's pertinent to know that investment is essential to make more money. Right guys?
I've lost alot trying to invest in Bitcoin myself, I think I nee someone trustworthy to invest with
Y'all should invest your bitcoin with Lois and make good profit see why she's the best
+1=7=1=5=6=0=0=2=7=1=4
I thought no one knows about Lois here. Lady's good and the best I only invest my bitcoin with her
Good thing I can reach her on WHATSAP with that number
Interviewer could have let the guy answer without constantly interrupting, but that aside there is a ton if good information in this video!
Dang, saying that Seattle doesn’t have great Mexican food is a slap in the face to all the great Mexican owned eateries and food trucks we have.
We apologize if it came across that way!
Excellent source of income if done right.
Definitely!
I didn't hear a generator running either. those LOUD generators are annoying to listen to and many places are cracking down on them as well. the whisper quiet generators for a trailer that size can run $7-$10k just depends on your electricity load needed.
wagil90 Thank you 😊
I have been considering starting one I planned on stopping by church on my way home to pray about it today and in this video it started in a church parking lot. How does the parking situation work? Are you allowed to park in any parking lot with other businesses? Do you have to seek permission? Parks or shopping centers?
It really depends and varies from place to place. Most of the time, you'll have to seek permission from the owner of the property and come upon an agreement.
