In this video, Erik Stafl, President of Stafl Systems, discusses the different lithium ion battery cell types and form factors. Three primary form factors are common in the industry today: cylindrical cells, pouch cells, and prismatic cells. This video discusses 18650 and 21700 cells and the benefits and downsides of using a commodity cell, including thermal performance and heat distribution. Pouch cells are thin pouches with anode and cathode layers stacked inside the cell and can be easier to incorporate thermal rejection methods. Erik then discusses the differences in cycle life with the different cell types.
This video discusses and defines key figures of merit, including specific energy (Wh/kg), energy density (Wh/L), power capability (W/kg or W/L), and rate capability plots (voltage and depth of discharge).

Keep it up with the great work! Recently I landed a job as a Battery Systems Engineer and to be honest your videos helped me a lot preparing for the interviews.

would you be kind enough to share some of your battery knowledge as I have done a research project on one but who knows you might give some info that is useful to me and vice versa :)

I am not sure if you are Dr but from the knowledge and the way you explain I am feeling like addressing you as a Dr. Thank you so much for such explanation to things.

Hi Erik, I am going through all your videos, as you have produced some very good content. But there is one statement you made in this video regarding the pouch cells which is in line is what I can find generally on the internet, that this particular form factor will expand and contract that requires special attention as well as kind of disadvantage it with respect to the 2 other form factors. But does the materials in the cylindrical and prismatic cells also do not face the same constraints? How do these 2 other form factors mitigate the growth in size while charging and contraction while discharging? Wish you were posting more content on TH-cam. Thanks for the great work.
