Audi 5-Cylinder: The Best Audi Engine

- You can argue, but there really isn't a more Audi engine than a straight 5-cylinder from 1970's. The Ingolstadt brand grew up with this engine - it was widely used in a handful of cars and they even raced it in a number of racing machines, let alone the most popular of them all: the Audi Sport Quattro S1. Yes, times when Audi worked on five-cylinder on daily basis were great...

I worked as an Audi dealer mechanic for more than 30 years, during that time I don't remember ever seeing a significant mechanical breakdown of a 5 cylinder. I owned one myself for 20 years, it had north of 200k miles when I sold it. Truly a rock solid engine.
Are the vr5s and v6s good
@@thepurdychannel8866 The 2.7s and 2.8s are pretty strong, with proper timing belt maintenance. The 3.0 is inferior in just about every way. I've been retired a few years and never encountered a vr5, but I wasn't at all impressed with the vr6 and I hated working on them.
@@Keleigh3000 i have a 1.4tdi pd engine
Oil pump shatters over 7500, spark scatter starts at 6800, radiator was too small and subsequently had many many cooling issues. Diesels would burn out rings on no1 cyl every 80k. And everybody just loved cis and cis-e. K24 was too small and k26 from 944 was lagtastic. Hx35 was just right but came later(and not on audi). Rod bolts were a soft spot as well. But the parts bin nature of the engine made it legendary.
20 years and 200k miles? that thing is barely driven
The sound of a 5 cylinder engine is music from motor heaven
Best those without catalytic, the 5E is the real original sound.
I had a 2.2 100....why I scrapped it I don't know now, but at the time, it kept flooding the cabin every time it rained and I thought the problem was terminal rust....I didn't know about the rubber drain drain plug in the plenum chamber of the cabin ventilation system blocking with leaves and debris......I mean, I only had it 6 years and found out about the cure 2 months after I scrapped it (sob!).
Lol what.... sounds like shit🤣
Thats why i own Volvo
Overrated sound lol
I had an 850R Volvo Estate for a 12 months. Between the low grunt of the 5 cylinder, the Turbo and the induction noise, defiantly one of the sweetest sounding combinations I've ever heard.
the volvo and fiat 5cyl sound beefier, less stressed, organic. the audi was more metallic, mechanic, agressive.
Don't compare torslanda beauties to the auto union crap please
@@TitoLukason Audi 5 cylinders are breaking records again. I don’t see Volvo breaking records anymore. Volvo abandoned the 5 cylinder. Audi brought it back. A brutal powerhouse with reliability and durability.
VAG built this engine because the EA827 engine [the typical VW/Audi 1.5 to 2.0 liter inline four cylinder] CANNOT be brought past about 2.1 liters. The engine was designed to be very compact, an entirely new crankcase would have to be designed for more displacement. In the 1970's, they came up with the solution of adding another cylinder to this four cylinder to create the "Audi" 5 cylinder. This was advantageous because the five cylinder could be built with the same tooling as the four cylinder.
They went on to take two of the EA827's and created the Audi V8. Then they sawed two of the center cylinders out to create the 90 degree Audi V6. Then, they dusted off old plans and built a V10 engine out of two of the inline 5's. This V10 was proposed for the Porsche 928 but never built, but did wind up as the engine in the Lamborghini Gallardo, among others. All these engines have 88 mm bore spacing.
Great video!
Brilliant.
They could have used the 1.5 liter engine with 88 bore spacing (and I guess less stroke then the 2 liter) and add 2 cylinders.
if they have 88mm boring could i also use the engines as flak turrets?
Normally they wanted to have a straight 6, but it didn't fit into the enginebay. So they put a 5 cylinder in it.
@@bedeckt they made the 88mm holes with flak, just shoot the blocks lol
I love my RS3. Such a unique sounding car. I can’t help but smile anytime I start it up, or go through areas (between buildings, under over passes etc) with amazing acoustics 😈

Here I still got my 1994 Audi UR-S4 2.2T 5cylinder. Its is absolutely bone stock till this day, pristine condition. First register keeper, Never will sell it. Got another project S4 2.2t making anywhere 800 to 1000bhp 😏
I got a good bit of them. One being a 83 urquattro rally replica with an aan swap.
@@lanrussell61 absolutely beautiful mate 👌
That S4 will be more expensive every year.
ill buy it off you for a pepsi can
Same he 84' UrS4 keeping this car for a long time!
I got my hands on an 84 4000q back in 08 for a song. Had it for 10 years, put a lot into it, had a lot fun, bought a lot of tires( going between 3 sets of wheels), fixed all that i could with the available parts both new and used, had to sell it. I loved that Zermatt silver. I would like to have another someday, but maybe not one that was so old, or just in better shape.
I had an 84 too..that was a car I should have kept...
I still own an 84 4000s quattro. Fun car for sure. Still running on the stock JT motor (for now). Fantastic car!
As the owner of a 5cyl turbo, the sound is amazing.
I love my Volvos and their 5-cylinder engines, but I must confess the Audi 5-cylinders sound a lot cooler, haha
The Volvo engines sound exactly the same at those power levels. There just isn't as many guys throwing big turbos on T5's and making 800-1000hp. They are all stuck on TD04s still.
I don't know man. A nice 5 cyl Volvo always manages to turn my head in its direction. I'm not really into volvos but they sound really good
And they does a pretty good mileage. My Volvo S60 just passed the 500.000 km line earlier this year.
There was a tractor pulling event with 3 small tractors, all fitted with a Volvo 5 cyl running on alcohol.
The sound from them screaming down the track was amazing.
I don’t know why but i prefer the volvos, they sound so smooth and i can’t get enough of the idle and low rpm of those, blub blub blub blub, just wonderful
I would go further. The Audi 5-cyl is among the best engines ever created.
If it is, then it's categorically been put in average handling mediocre cars. Even the quattro. It's hardly an exciting drive compared to the competition. Modern RS3 and TT RS are devoid of any feel too.
@sw4gr1d What is a merit of a good engine? The Audi 5-cyl is almost indestructible. Simply one of the 5 best engines of all times.
@sw4gr1d Sounding great, Being almost indestructible and taking to tuning really well aren't merits to you???
@sw4gr1d Sure, and they were designed almost 50 years ago.
@sw4gr1d depending on engine model 400-550Hp on stock internals. And 350-400K kilometers before needing anything beyond normal maintenance, which is way better than the norm for VAG (100-200K with exception of 1.9TD which is unkillable)
Totally agree with the last comment that it's good Audi keeps this as a heritage engine for the petrolheads. To me it is the best sounding engine ever. Who can forget the sound of an S2 Quattro echoing through some Scandinavian forest from 2 km away and ominously getting closer. I have CD's of this sound and I file them with my Bruckner and Mahler symphonies.
May you upload a short clip of one of them for me to enjoy? We're already living in the era of silent elecric carriages.
I used to have 80 B4 with 2.3NG engine. I miss this car so much and the beautiful noise it was making when accelerating.
The world needs a lot more straight-5 engines. Straight-4 are so boring and ubiquitous.
I'd love an RS3. But as with anything cool and interesting, they also cost a lot.
Honestly, as someone who's considering buying a used RS3 right now.. The RS3's problem is that it's at least a somewhat compromised vehicle considering its price.
For a similar price you can get a C43, which sacrifices just a bit of performance for way more options (electric/memory/ventilated seats, HUD, electric tailgate), and is bigger too (though size means nothing to me). Plus, it's got a rear-biased permanent AWD system which simply makes the car more fun.
I've always sworn that the day I will afford an RS3 I will buy one. But now being in that position, I see lots of potential cars which surpass it when you draw the line.
Just my 2c as a potential buyer. I might end up buying one anyway, but the price is definitely a bit too much.
@@xIcarus227 No you're making sense. I get where you're coming from.
I'm middle aged now and all my life I've owned compact FWD cars for the efficiency and low cost of ownership, getting the job done. All have been stick shift to keep me interested.
But I'm really looking hard at getting into a RWD platform with some actual horsepower. Stuff like the new GR86, a used M240i, maybe go the Mustang route, maybe a last-gen Golf R, maybe stretch for a Genesis G70 3.3T. I swore out automatics before, but lately since they've gotten so much better with tight snappy shifting and better behavior logic, stuff like the Genesis or a ZF or DSG are actually prettty awesome gearboxes and pretty durable too.
@@exothermal.sprocket got a m235i for 30'000km now, got it mapped 10'000km ago, the stupid grin never leaves my face anymore :D rwd is so fun (i live in the alps, so in winter you have to make some sacrifices in mobility though)

Boring ? Then get yourself a 3 cylinder. They are "unique", produce more vibration (just like 5 cyl) and sound similar to 5 cyl.
Wall of text warning regarding Ferdinand Piëchs role in the 5-cylinder development:
Piëch had a weird obsession with oddball engines and especially those related to the number 5.
In the early 1970's he was involved with the development of a new economic engine generation at Mercedes-Benz for the W115. He convinced the other technicians that rather than going for 4 cylinder applications with different bore and stroke it would make more sense to just increase the number of cylinders. Therefore they were focusing development on creating an engine family which was available as 4 and also as a 5 cylinder version.
The engines were originally supposed to be petrol ones. After they started testing it quickly became apparent that the 5 cylinder started shaking badly at around 5000rpm. Development was set on hold. Piëch then just came up with the idea of using the engine design as a diesel since they wouldn't really rev past 5000rpm anyways and thus the OM616 and OM617 were born.
In 1972 Piëch joined Audi as head of dept. for special tasks in technical development. Since they were badly in need of a prestigeous engine they were looking for a way to develop a 6 cylinder unit. Since Audi's unfortunately had a layout which featured the engine to be in front of the front axle, an inline 6 application would have been to front heavy. Piech instead came up with the idea of a 5 cylinder engine again to combine "the economical fuel usage of a 4 cylinder with the smoothness of an inline 6". Thus from the EA827 4 cylinder the EA828 5 cylinder was born.
But still the urge for a 6 cylinder engine for VAG cars was big so that there were multiple efforts made, resulting in the VR6, the 12V Audi V6 and a 24V Audi inline 6 (!) which was co-developed by Porsche. Piëch was involved in the development of every single one of them.
Since the Problem with the FF layout on Audi's persisted the 24V inline 6 design was then sold to Volvo who used it in the 960. From this engine design later the Volvo 5 cylinders (e.g. used in T5) were derived. Those engines were then licensed by Ford and used in the Focus RS.
Piëch in the mean time initiated development of the VR5 and the 5 valve layout on the Audi 1.8(t) and Audi V6 engines.
TL; DR: Piëch kind of gave birth to most 5 cylinder engines used in passenger cars until the mid 2000's (except Fiat and Honda ones) and applied a 5 valve layout to an engine which would not have needed it. If that is not an unhealthy obsession with the number 5 I don't know what else is.
Oh, speaking of oddballs: He also initiated development of the W8 Passat, the W12 used in Bentleys, Pheatons etc. and the W16.4 Veyron of course.
this is not entirely correct. the modular engine series is a genuine volvo powerplant.
it was designed in house as part of the long running "project galaxy" started in the late 1970ies, shifting philosophy to fwd transverse layout. they insisted on designing as many components as possible on their own. since the PRV V6 did not satisfy, this included the engines and transmissions. galaxy almost left volvo bankrupt because of that and has been the largest financial investment in swedish industry so far at that time.
first prototypes were 4cyl, already all aluminium design but close to the redblock engine featuring sohc in first stages. it went to porsche engine development for refinements on the first produced 6cyl version. they had some disagreements so volvo decided to finish it on their own. porsche had hands on 5cyl turbo models for the 850 later. like they did on renault engines being used in the 400 series, filling the gap cause the 4cyl was delayed in favour of the new 6cyl that was urged to be released in the 900 models. the 5cyl showed up a year later, the 4cyl went into the S/V40 models only.
audi supplied the 5cyl TDI until 2001. those had eventually been phased out by diesel versions of the modular engine shifting to common rail injection.
Why did they choose 5 cylinders?
“4 is too small and 6 is too bulky”
@@satsumagt5284 Volvo didn't choose between 4, 5 and 6, all of these engines from the same developpement where produced and sold at the same time.
@@tomlobos2871 Note that Porsche was already a partner for Volvo, before the white block, they've worked on the DOHC (16v) variation of the redblock.
@@Damien.D yes, the head was origined in the penta 16v version of the redblock. porsche was in financial struggle themselves so this was a welcomed contract for them. much of that was about emissions, fuel injection and electronics, but never on a level like yamaha having hands on basic construction. porsche was one of the most experienced engine developers in a time where fuel injection was a novelty to most manufacturers.
I got to watch the Audi 90 TQ race at Elkhart Lake, WI in 1990. That was fabulous. The sanctioning bodies kept adding weight to the awd cars, so they didn't compete so well... But the fireball that thing burped on upshifts--WOW!

As far as I know there was mechanical fuel injection in the 1950s. I wonder why Audi didn’t do something like that early on with the 5s. Audi is all around awesome vehicles to this day with the R8 & all. Amazing rally history too of course. Nice video.
Daimler-Benz had direct injection and a mechanical ecm in the 40s for the Messerschmidt 109.

Exactly
Maybe to complex and exspensive? I was a normal production car engine. Not a luxury car engine.
What do you mean? The 5-cyl had Bosch K-jetronic mechanical injection in 1976. Just like Porsche, Mercedes and severall other premium brands.
Mechanical injection did exist back in the 1950s, but getting it to work well was a nightmare. The 1957 Corvette had an engine called the "Fuelie" but when they had mechanical problems, people didn't know how to fix them and swapped in a 4-bbl carb. I think some race engines had something called "Hilborn injection" but it never worked well in street use, only in track use.
The T5 2.5 pd engine is actually half a V10 used in Toureg and Phaeton, and uses the right hand bank cyl head.

@@rustyjeep2469 yeah the 5th and 6th gear in the TDI’s rip! And your right and with some work those 5bangers can put down some decent power. I’m more of a Vr6 guy myself but I have seen a lot of 5banger builds and the 2.5’s are relatively available
The O7K is gaining popularity so I am surprised no mention of it as well. Lots of guys with 944/ 924's for instance are building and swapping in the O7K. They make decent power, can be had for cheap, and sound great of course.
@@psavel274 yup that’s true!

I am also a VR guy. Built a bunch of them, some all motor, some with snails 😁 Really enjoyed my 91 GLI with a 12v AAA. Other than having a ton of good parts on it, that car was completely gone through and served as my daily for years. With the TDI 5th gear it would get around 30mpg cruising at like 80 on the highway. Who doesn't love the sound of a VR either?!?!? 👍😎
Greetings from Cape Town, South Africa. My encounter with a 5 cylinder Audi engine was through the 2.3l and 2.6l versions found in our locally built Vw Microbus and Caravelle family buses which Vw South Africa continued to build until 2002 when they were completely replaced by the T4 generation.
fun fact, my grandpa's vw vento had a 2.5 litre inline 5, it sounded like heaven
I had a 1988 Audi 5000 turbo for a few years. The 5-cylinder engine and the turbocharger were seemingly indestructible. Many other parts broke…
The VAG 2.5 5-cylinder petrol in my ‘94 T4 Westfalia sounds lovely. Ain’t fast obviously but one of my favourite engines in any vehicle I’ve ever owned. So much character!
2.5 tfsi engine got many engine of the year awards.
In South Afirca the VW T2 was also built with 2.3 and 2.5 Audi 5 cilinder in the back
Thank God VAG still make the 5 cylinder unit alive, it's the only (if not the homemade) gasoline powered inline five engine still produced now, if they stopped the production too like what Volvo, Fiat, and Honda did, the only way to hear the 5 cylinder sound is to make a Scania 5 cylinder diesel unit used by several buses rev to 6000 RPM.
NB. The transversely mounted inline 5 makes a car safer since it has more horizontal protective structure than inline 4 and V6 engine, that's why Volvo used to make a transverse inline 6 instead of V6.
hence handling, first audis had the engine in front of the front axle. wich eventually made the quattro necessary for sporty driving. had the chance to try a friends audi 90 coupe with the 2l engine and it was no fun at all cause of oversteering. got myself a volvo S70 at that time and that was totally different in handling since this is a safety issue and volvo is great on that topic. my current ride is an S80, 2.5 turbo, no regrets on that decision as it has an astonishing economy. though the V8 had tickled my fancy quite a lot.
One of the greatest engine ever built!
Was a great engine. I couldn't believe the performance on the 2.0 litre. It just never stopped pulling.
I like this style of video essay, feels fresh! Good job man!
Great video 👌🏽🤙🏽
Beast of a unit, yeah shame theres not more 5cyl models. Great video 👍
my first car was an audi 90 like 14 years ago, today I have a volvo s60 with a t5 engine, both engines 2,3 and the sound is still just as amazing as it was 14 years ago :)
I’ve got a 2.5L turbo Volvo engine in my Ford and it’s one of the best engines I’ve driven. The 2.5 gives a nice amount of torque and the turbo is nicely matched as to have great response, 15psi and pretty much no lag.
All the sound of a V10 in an engine we can afford.
Tbh since you can find an S6 for under $15k, the V10 is actually cheaper. ;)
@@MrBrokehisbollo cheaper than audi 80/100 for a 1k eur ?
Less than 2 months ago I bought a VW Jetta Mk5 with the 2.5 inline 5. I know it’s not an Audi l5, but it stills has that smoothness and amazing sound at higher revs!
Bought a VW Sciroco new in 1981, drove it 180,000 mile. Bought some fuel in Louisiana that was mostly water, that really played havoc with the fuel distributor. In the early 90's my teenage son came up with a 5 cylinder Audi complete with transmission. The Sciroco was in great cosmetic shape, and a Turbo Audi made it a real sleeper. The only clue to what it had was the wide tires.
Had a 1997 S6 that had 450k km and had the original head gasket and clutch tough engine that is now in my S2 project
Visio you never disappoint with your content
Ditto. Owned three different 5-cylinder Volvos but those Audi 5s sound the business!
I've owned over a dozen , and am convinced the 5cylinder in the Best motor in the world
Thanks for including the British attempt 🙂
bought my rs3 new in 2020
love this car gonna keep it forever
My partner owns a very low mileage 1991 Audi 90 B3 2.3E. He never had any issues with it aside from the usual wear that's to be expected from a 30 year old car. And the fact that Audi still provides most of the parts through the Audi Heritage program means that this car will be on the road for many more year.
My wife used to own a 2009 VW Rabbit that had the 2.5 L 5 cylinder engine. I really miss that droning sound when I would hit the power band in 3rd gear…
i have one, its still awesome
(audi 80 b4 2,3L)
Thanks for the video. We had a 1980 100 with the 2L carb 5cyl. It sounded like a V8.
Any possible of a history video of Volvo 5 cylinders?
The whole white block generation can be covered. It's a complicated story, and Porsche has a part in it.
I've had Audi B4 2.3E Quattro 1992.That shit was a tank. Unstoppable and unbreakable 👍
Hey @VisioRacer ! Thank You for that video! Wszystkiego dobrego!
My all time favourite car, 20v ur quattro.
Should have bought one years ago when I had the chance.
Big fan of 5 cylinders, had fiat coupe 20vt, volvo 850R manual, Audi S2 avant , Alfa Romeo 156 2.4 Jtd, and I'm driving my tweaked Vw T5 5 banger 👍👌😎
I have a 5 cylinder diesel vw t4 and a petrol 850 T5. I would chose a 5 cylinder over a 4 or 3 or 6 anyday. As a daily it's the perfect compromise between soundtrack ,performance and fuel mileage. Let alone all 5 cylinders until now have prouved to be very reliable units. Due to the complexity of the engine, the engineering was of a higher standard.
5 bangers rule let them live on.
I am enjoying the last of the 5 cylinder Volvo 2.4 diesel engines in my XC 60 thé blocks make great coffee tables too light enough to move around and look super cool thanks again visco racer for a great video
In 1992 VW SA squeezed the 5 Banger Audi engine on The T3 Microbus and Caravelle and increased the engine capacity from 2.2 to 2.5 with Bosch K jetronic and later to 2.6 cc with Bosch not certain whether it was Digifiant . They discontinued the production in early 2000s those T3s are still considered gold to this day in South Africa
The USA had a T4 variant called the Eurovan, and it also got a 2.5L I5 initially. It was Digifant.
I have 2 Volvo 5 cylinder turbo. My daily driver is a V8, but when I get a chance to use them, those are very special moments.
Beautiful 👏🏻 I plan to own a V8 daily once
@@VisioRacer Do it before it's too late.
The audi 5 cylinder is now still used in the donkervoort D8 gto.
and cupra...
I have 1984 and 93 Audi Coupe, 1990 Audi 100. Great cars and engines.
How I wish we had more Audi models with this engine in the USA. RS 3 sedan is not it. The hatchback would be perfect. And if I can dream, this 5 cylinder put in the A4 Avant would be 10/10 for me.
It‘s not really called the „Ur-Quattro“ officially, just Audi Quattro. „Ur“ just means „first“, „original“ here. Since there have been Quattro options for basically any Audi model after that, people asked „which one?“ if you were talking about an Audi Quattro, so the first, original Audi Quattro became the „Ur-Quattro“.
My first car was a black 1983 80 CD 5E 1.9L. Such a great sound and feel of that engine. Lots of memories. And so it's been mostly black Audi's ever since. The interior has been a generation ahead of the rest, and the exterior design too really, of the common cars that is. The lines are just very pleasing. It's "sporty". And I like to do sports and be active, in many of ways, so it's the car that personifies myself. It must be practical, so obviously Avant. Always ready to throw anything in or on top and go. I like to drive, so must be manual. And we have a good amount of snow, so quattro is nice, though not really needed, it's just fun. Not obsessive about it, it's just a car. But it fits me. As simple as that.
I watched to many 5 pot videos on TH-cam and now own a audi urs4 and a volvo 850 t5. Both manual. I daily the volvo because its easy to get 9l per 100kms economy. Where it's hard to get below 11l/100kms in the audi. But when I want to really have fun it's the audi with the external wastegate that kicks the heart beat into dangerous levels!
Why a 5 cylinder? In my decades of 5 cylinder (and a recognition of slight bias) ownership, the Audi 5's (and VW 2.5) are reliable, have good gas mileage, great power delivery, and awesome potential. I've owned many. My highest mileage 5 is in my (now my friends as I sold it) 1991 200 20v turbo quattro avant. It has over 362,000 miles and has never had the engine cracked open. It has been modified over the years and at one point (2009-2011 ran 12.1 in the 1/4 mile with simple bolt ons. Still runs around town to this very day. Oh yes....they sound awesome as well.
AAN is great, very potential engine. i had made little mods and it produce 600hp
What a bullshit. Rods on these engines barely hold 350 hp. Or do u call changing the rods "a little mod" ?
@@RivieraByBuick What :D 600hp isnt even soo much from aan. I have catcams cams, Holset hx40 super @1,65bar, H-profile rods, kdfi 1,4 ecu and ev14 1300cc injectors. I have Maxxecu race but havent install it yet and then i have more boost and much more
@@Puuha1 That`s what i am talking about. Your mods are nothing but major.
@@RivieraByBuick Like, what lesser i could do? These are basic mods what people do, normal mods. And some people are pushing 450hp with stock rods and 450hp is consider "safe limit" with aan.
Edit: just rembered that i have probably about 100-200hp missing because kdfi dont understand 5cyl so injectors and ignition is just messy wreck and HALL sensors are bad with MS board, didnt rev over 6200rpm last time i went to dyno and still got that ~600hp
Man I miss my 87 cs turbo Quattro all black stick shift. Best winter car ever!!!!
I own 3 audis with 5 cylinder turbo and 2 audis 5 cylinder NA, love the sound
What an iconic engine!!
It's great engine, until you start looking at the prices for parts. Nowadays this engine costs almost same as 2JZ. To me 1.8T 20v is the best Audi engine. Costs almost nothing, all parts are available and cheap as bread. Also can use advantage of twinscroll turbochargers, while 5cyl can't. Maybe it doesn't have that sound, but for that money it's best you can buy and is same durable.
