Greece is very expensive. I am from the USA. I found Athens and Paros surprisingly very expensive. Gyro is $14 like in NYC. That being said I absolutely loved Athens and Paros. Athens is one of my favorite cities ever.
Houston, TX
@@Mongoose-ct6us I dont Know what you ate but it was not a gyros. Gyros is $ 3,8 in most cases , $5 is considered to be too expensive for us Greeks we would never eat at that restaurant. If you go to Mykonos or Santorini or a super expencive restaurant , maybe . But not in an every day restaurant.
@@annavsmith1 My Mom, my sister, and a big part of my family live in Houston. I lived in Houston for a few years (1997 -2000)

Well said, only a Spanish speaking person can have such a natural Greek accent!!!
Or Italian speaking person too.
@@Mongoose-ct6us Italians i wouldnt say so! Spanish are exactly like Greeks
I’m Greek and the thing with the food always annoys me. So many ignorant tourists always ordering greek salad and musaka everyday during their holidays refusing to explore local cuisine. Plus many of them seem to choose the worst places to eat especially in the islands (maybe because they’re cheaper). As for coffee, Americans seem to be addicted to Starbucks crap, they can’t comprehend how real coffee tastes, I always love their looks when they taste coffee here, it’s like they’re having a revelation! I always like to show people how we do things here. Thank you for choosing our country to live in, you are a very kind gentleman.
Well, mousaka is a greek dish, isn't it?, and I love it, but I'm also ordering calamari tiganita, mouskari kokinisto or stifado me rizi , gimista, love the pasticio too ..... In Nafplio first thing I'm eating is Kotopulo lemoni me patates and salsa.
I am Greek, and must admit my shame in loving moussaka and horiatiki salad... and could easily eat it every day. I just hate it when yiayia serves fiakies soup five days a week (lol).
But tourists are not obliged to know all the variety of food we have here in Greece, same as for us when we go abroad. You try something and then if you like it you stick to it. Besides everyone does what he likes with his money. Nothing wrong with that !
So if I need to order a coffee that has some caffeine and some decaf, due to my heart condition, what would I order? I love lots of cream or milk in mine too.
Actually it is the Greeks themselves that are the most narrow-minded people in the world when it comes to food. For the average Greek, ALL foreign dishes are crap and trusts only his mother's food (awful in most of the cases, bad techniques and the ingredients are swimming in oil...). And even when they go to a Greek taverna, they will always order the same boring dishes, i.e. fries (as if sth will happen to Greeks if they do not order fries every day), spaghetti, souvlaki, chicken, and that terrible dish called Pastitsio! So it is funny to call the tourists ignorant, at least they travel to other countries and taste different recipes, Greeks do not even travel outside Greece, they only know their souvlaki and gyros.
As a Greek when u said when the ferry doors opens all hell breaks loose!!!! I was on the floor laughing!!! and yes this is how it is in the summer...
No 11: Όταν δείχουμε τον αριθμό 5 σε κάποιον, χρησιμοποιούμε το πίσω μέρος της παλάμης. Το εμπρος μέρος της παλάμης είναι ύβρις και λέγεται «μούτζα».
When we show the number 5 to someone, we use the back of the palm. The front part of the palm is hubris and is called "muja".

ADAPTATION, understanding, sinking in the culture of the country we visit - is a MUST. Absolutely the way to enjoy and be happy in the culture we visit.
Small businesses keep the afternoon break, but big shops work all day, because today there's air-conditioning and they have rotating shifts. For example a small shop for clothes works 09:00-03:00 Monday Wednesday Saturday, and 09:00-02:00, 17:00-20:00 Tuesday Thursday. A supermarket works 08:00-21:00 weekdays and 08:00-20:00 Saturday.
The tap water can be either very good or very bad depending on the region, so ask the locals whether to drink or not. Athens water comes from rivers on the mountains so it's even better than bottled water, but water in the islands comes with water container ships from the mainland, so it's filthy and only good for washing.
About the water, that depends on the island.
Here on Rhodes according to where on the island you are you can have clean drinking water, like e.g. in Rhodes town, because it's from the mountains.
Smaller islands here get their water from a ship with a desalination equipment.
I live in Greece in a seaside town and i have my morning coffee at home because i see no reason to pay for it in a cafe, but i believe that in places frequented by foreign tourists, coffee with cream is not unheard of.
Please don't go to a rural greek Hotel and ask for a "flat white " coffee and then not be able to tell the person serving you what it is! Definitely agree about sensible shoes. The greeks are the loveliest people and so friendly. Relax, enjoy and go with the flow. If you order something and they get it wrong just try it and it may be better than what you actually ordered. Great tips. Thank you xx
Enjoy your videos. GreekAmerican in Connecticut, US. I speak a little Spanish too. I would like to visit Venezuela one day. Your Greek is good as is your profera. You have a great attitude about life.

watching from USA, Southern California...another video with great info! Thank you for sharing!
Another great Video! Now, you have to excuse me for this but...when you say "number 5" you have to talk about what gestures are considered rude/inapropriate in greece(maybe a topic for another video?), and you did one right there...Common misconception for foreigners when showing the number 5, we always show with the palm facing ourselves, and the back of the hand towards the other person, otherwise the open palm of five fingers towards the other person is called a mountza (μούντζα/φάσκελο). Love your videos so far, my wife started watching them too!
I am making a video about this topic. Thanks my friend for your support!
Instead of pancakes you can order "Lukumades" with honey and instead coffee with cream coffee with milk.
As i watch you walking in the sun with a black t shirt i have to also tell you that black and dark clothing in the sun attract heat so wear it in the afternoon. 😎
Or you can order frappe with vanilla ice cream in it
I have lived here in Athens since 1980, we drink the tap water. Never a problem. Maybe they are peomoting water filters for business, but the water is fine. Egypt though,, buy water.
If you like cream in your coffee fredo cappuccino is the best choice.

Your Tips are on point! I'd like to add Tip #11: Don't expect to eat your whole meal when you dine outside of a restaurant - the cats under your table will constantly meow for you to give them your food.
The thing with old towns and their alleys is the quiet yet central. In Nafplio old town you don't hear any cars and you are a few steps away from the tourist center; the downside is that you gotta leave the car far.
It's part of the beauty of the old town of Nafplio.

Yes, Americans do not appreciate the bidet, drink true Greek coffee (we lived in Flushing Queens next to Little Greece, so we learned to enjoy it - and from what I understand, it’s healthier as it’s boiled rather than brewed, although they do use sugar) or travel light :) The best part of your list is the quiet time laws. Love the concept.

We have "special pancakes" Loukoumades very nice! , it's pancakes with honey sirup and some cinamon
This was a great video with good advice. A couple of years ago, I took the whole family (ex-spouse and 4 young adult kids) on an epic 2 week trip to Greece. Best ever. We visited Athens, Santorini, Rhodes. All wonderful. But our favorite was Nafplio. That walk from Nafplio to Karathona beach is an adventure in itself. It was early in the season; nonetheless we enjoyed the sun loungers at Outopia, and the beautiful cristal clear waters. Looking at the online reviews, Outopia is not universally appreciated, but we thought it was very good and enjoyed good service and good food (and free loungers :-) Just go, you won't regret it.

Great videos. Well done. Living the dream. As a Greek Australian would love to have endless summers between Greece and Australia, God Willing. I like the North Aegean. Maybe in Nafplio next year to have a look around Peloponesse with Mrs. I love the supermarket video. Prices are the same as in Australia in Greece except Greeks earn one quarter of the wages. Not sure how they survive. Need to update to the new Greek ID which some of our saints advise not to get by 2026 🙂 Freddo Expresso and FULL Feta Tiropita at your finger tips anywhere in Greece. Got to love it !!! Australia = WORK , Greece = LIFE !
I totally agree witĥ you! It makes me sad when i see tourists in Greece eating at McDonald's.

The other way here in Greece is considered as an offensive gesture, though every local understands you are a foreigner and they don't bother.

My Boston cousins when come here they don't eat fish and ask for hamburgers ! Lol! Kisses from Athens!
Thank you for the video! My trip for Greece is set this year, but in the middle of November. I'm more interested in seeing a lot of archaeological sites rather than beeches. I'll be there for two weeks. I was planning on walking in Athens but talking a car to visit places in the Pelaponese. Any advice?
You should definitely visit Messinia and her capital Kalamata City..The homeland of Greek olive oil !✌️🌿

The videos are GREAT!! A suggestion, try using Greek instrumental music, I think will match the blue water and the scenery better.
I don't have any Greek music, but I will compose some for future videos. (I use my own music for all of my videos. I am a music composer for media) Thanks for your suggestion, my friend.
I don't know, as a Greek I'm tired of videos putting bouzouki or middle eastern tunes as soundtrack. It's too one sided, reminds me of a bad gyros tourist trap in the old city of rethymno or something... I much prefer the chill out music vibes of this video.

Good suggestion because we are going to take a Greek Isle Cruise next year in 2025. I would like to see more about the sea and ports.
Such a pleasure to press like!!!
Now some trivia... trivia???
We not only have one of the most famous least understood incomprehensible word in the word like Malaka but we also have something else which is called MOUNTZA. It is when you spread your five fingers with your palm facing someone. Well, it's a cultural trait considered as an offence..Since you are a local now have some fun and ask your wife or other friends to elaborate further.
Waiting for the next one

I heard Volos and Mapfia are very nice cities
They are. I am originally from Volos but grew up in Thessaloniki and i;ve visited Nafplio many times. Basically any city that is built around a sea harbor has a more summer vibe. Also access to seafronts offer serene afternoon walks and some real nice sunset views....Some others equally beautiful are Kavala, Preveza, Kalamata, Galaxidi and many more. Also Lefkada which although it may seem like an island is actually connected by a land mass with the continental Greece. (my work involves a lot of travelling and i've been in most parts of greece)
I have been to Volos my κουμπαρος lives in Volos.

Coffee with cream in Greece, θεέ μου.
I’ve been traveling all over since 1970, have been to Greece a couple of times, but was last there 20 years ago. I understand and practice all of what you say, BUT you mean to tell me that in Napflio one can’t find a “caffè Americano”…coffee and water, and maybe a little milk/cream? I’m going to be staying there this fall for a month during Oct/Nov.
Of course, you can find coffee with water, but it is called 'filtered coffee' and you can also ask to put milk in your coffee, too. The best thing is to look at the menu of the coffee place you visit and order accordingly. If you are not sure, then ask and I am sure they'll be happy to help you choose.
Regarding coffee, which for coffee drinkers like myself is essential, you should look into how we Greeks refer to " imported" types of coffees. So americano means nothing to Greeks, it is filtered coffee (from a pot or individual pot they bring to your table and you pour it after two three minutes when it sets) or "french" coffee. If you prefer expresso it is single or double shot not "lougo" (if I m spelling it correctly)like Italians say it. Macchiato in the italian sense does not exist (only the starbucks type). Freddo cappucino is iced expresso coffee (that has been brewed and put ice into to cool it down with milk foam and if you ask for it ground cinnamon sprinked on it. Frappe is very strong if you have heart issues probably avoid it. And everything, except Greek coffee, have a decaf version. Just do a little research you ll find good coffee in Greece.
@@ourlifeinnafplio Thank you…You’ve made my day. Filtered coffee it is then.

Yes, we have it here as well, its not as popular but we do have it.
best business opportunity in Greece.... Just get a license and operate a van near archaelogical sites selling hats and Asics sneakers..... forget TH-cam.... !! This would make significantly more money!!
No accountability for personal space extends to buses. People would
literally push me out of the way to get on the bus before me. I think it disrespectful and rude, but unfortunately part of Greek culture. Here in the USA people are so courteous about waiting in line.
Never mind flip-flops and sandals. I have seen women trying to climb rocky areas on very high stiletto heels! 🤦♀
In towns where there is sewage system, it's ok to flush toilet paper. Only at places that have septic tank you don't.
Κάνε κακά σου πρώτα και βλεπουμε
Regrettably, Greece nowadays is not an easy place for coffee lovers. They are very fussy about where to serve coffee (usually, when you finish your meal at a taverna you need to move to a different place to find coffee, most eateries refuse to sell coffee for some reason). And then, the most common type of coffee you find is Nescaffe, cold (frappé) or warm, which is instant coffee... Even the traditional Greek/Turkish coffee, which did have personality at least, is out of fashion now. And, what is much more problematic than finding coffee is finding GOOD coffee. That is a very rare occurence.
Greece is one of the leading countries in coffee culture, it’s something like science here. That’s we enjoy our coffee in coffee shops not in restaurants. And nobody drinks Nescafe (instant coffee). Literally nobody except tourists who order Frappè.
@@marshallc.t.2554 As a coffee lover myself I suffer in Greece, for the reasons that I clearly explained above. And, yes, Greece ought to get the Nestrlé award for instant coffee consumption... I just arrived in Stockholm, a week ago, coming from Athens, and here is a paradise for coffee lovers. And nobody drinks instant coffee here.
You mean in the supermarkets or in coffee shops, dont tell me you went to a tavern and expected to gett a pumpkin spice latte instead of one of the trillion caffeterias
@@greekcomenterperson446 Greece being a country that receives three times her population in visitors from all over the World, one would expect a bit most cosmopolitanism, also when it comes to coffee. Most visitors want a coffee immediately after their meal, and they do not understand the unnecessary complication of this thing in Greece. If it is about making a statement, I find it counter-productive. And, then, even in cafeterias you get lousy coffee, espresso either too imbalanced or too low temperature or both, and at a certain time they refuse to sell coffee because they close the machine way too early. Well, I am just making observations, I know that nothing is going to change, Greeks are not of the kind of people who have flexible minds. You may have heard the expressions "agyristo kefali," or even "arvanitiko kefali."
Εσείς οι αρνητές του καφέ της Ελλάδας φαίνεται ότι είσαστε ιδιωτροποι
pancakes and crepes are no different in greece
Yeah, I know. But for Americans, it's not the same. When they order pancakes they mean the type of pancakes that you will get in IHOP or similar places in the USA
Yes, they are, as an Athens person, we absolutely have both and they are all different. I never ordered a pancake at plateia nea smyrni or marousi, only to receive a thin crepe. Not sure how different it is from the American versions but for sure crepes and pancakes are not the same thing in Greece, at least not Athens. Are we at, the dawn of y2k? I live in germany now and whether you get a waffle, a pancake, and anything called 'kuchen', it has the same bland taste, and texture as a simple vanilla cake. Sorry but greece has diversity in available food options so let's celebrate it 🎉 (but also, yeah if you visit it's a good idea to try something local 😉)
@@MsMinoula greece is filled with Creperies that make nice thin crepes. There are no "pancakekeries" anywhere. That makes crepes the only "pancake" around in Greece to me. :D
@@ChilliCao Wtf is wrong with you, all cafes with a branch menu make pancakes you don't need a special place, and if it's your personal opinion/taste don't say "in greece", say "in my village"
@@MsMinoula lol, how do you order them? Actually, Tiganites is the closest greek thing to pancakes which you might find is common in countryside "village" place that you are refering to. But the context I am talking about is how "diadedomeno" is the pancake in greece, at it is known in uk/us or elsewhere. Of course there is diversity in such a touristy place. And you can find kangaroo and Wagyu steak too, it doesn't mean you can go in the general context anywhere in greece and ask for pancakes and expect people to know what you mean. Avg greek, in my "village", which is whole Greece itself, does not hang out at cafes that have a brunch menu.
Well this leaves Greece out because I can't go to any country where I can't have cream in my coffee.
You can actually! Just order an "Americano" with milk, or a filtered coffee ("french" coffee) with milk. Or if you mean the frothy/creamy type, order a latte or a cappuccino. For the latter two, it's highly possible that the Greek version will just be heavier and less watery than what you're used to, and you would actually be able to taste the coffee in it.
P.S.: Order coffee in a cafe/cafeteria, not in taverns/restaurants though!
