I love this 🇬🇷🧿💙😀
Do it mate. Come with an open mind and try to learn a few basic sentences in Greek and you'll be good to go.
Not too sure if learning fee basic sentences is gonna work. If your second language is English and then you try to learn Greek you kind of lose your English accent.
@@thisismylifeingreece Nikos is Canadian-Greek, so he does not need to learn Greek, he knows Greek.
I know I feel the same way 💖😊 time to book my one way flight to Greece
As a EU citizen, I have been travelling to Greece for many many years and it is the country I feel deep connection with, which I love, admire and which is the best country for me. I watch everything that is related to Greece and about Greece.
Thanks for the kind words 🇬🇷💙🙏

Very, very good!! It is by no standards an easy language, to learn!

You should also speak Spanish to your kids, I say! :) I first came to Greece in the early eighties in my early 20s. I stayed here for 15 years. For the first couple of years, I didn't speak the language. This meant that I had to stay in the bubble of the expat English-speaking community, which sucked! I couldn't understand the richness of the culture, as I couldn't have any conversation in Greek beyond the weather. I felt that I was missing so many things. Greeks were talkers and expressive people. The whole country opened up to me when I learned the language. The talks, the laughter, the friendships we had! After I left for professional reasons, I kept returning each year and my friends became family! Now I am back for good, retired in my beloved city, Athens. The foreigners who move to another country must understand what they lose if they don't speak the language.
I am delighted to see that you are so enthusiastic about Greece.
Thank you so much. It means a lot🇬🇷💙🙏
love your videos! I was born in Athens but grew up in the US...Greek is my native language but I have to be honest...your Greek is better than mine!! Congratulations on learning the language. I will be retiring to Greece next year; your videos are an inspiration!!
Thank you so much! All the best with your move to Greece my friend 🇬🇷💙
Lived in Greece for 4 years, learned Greek to assimilate, and for the sheer pleasure. Now I live in California and experience the frustration of so many immigrants proudly refusing to learn English.
Thanks for sharing!
Australian born Greek here who was forced to attend Greek school every Sunday as a child, living in Australia. At the time I hated it, but I owe my parents for an incalculable gift. Your Greek pronunciation is excellent. Love your videos.

The language is a key that will unlock many doors, from my experience in greece, greeks will go above and beyond to help out, give extra information to any question randomly invite to events, my family and i always get top service when on vaccation in greece just because i speak the language. Living in greece for 6 months 15 years ago was the best experince of my life.

I have not moved yet but i expect my first year or so to be almost soley focused on integration. Ive spend some time every day learning Greek but i really look forward to being tutored in person. My mouth is not used to making the proper sounds for Greek lol. Its challenging but fun and i hope that making the effort, the Greek friends i make will help me improve my grammar and pronunciation

Great video. I think it helps a lot. Only one remark about the turkish toilet. It's not just a hole in the ground. It has the same plumbing features and connects to the sewer system like the regular toilet but since it's in the ground no part of your body touches the toilet. This means that it requires less cleaning and maintenance. I think it's actually better that the regular toilet for public facilities. Ask local women about it.
I'm probably relocating to Greece (Thessaloniki), and your videos make me even more excited to leave cold and grey Paris as soon as possible. I've already been to Crete, and decided I'd live in Greece one day because I totally fell in love with this country. Thanks a lot for your great videos ❤
Happy about your move to Greece my friend! All the best and thanks for your comment 🇬🇷💙🙏
I am greek. I thought driving in Greece was horrible until I went on a road trip through Serbia. I absolutely love Serbia, but the driving there... THAT was hell! Though tbf the lager the city the more frantic the driving experience is gonna be in most countries. Respect to Bulgaria, their driving etiquette/culture was top notch.
Well, I am from Bulgaria and I was going to say - You should come to Bulgaria and see what is a terrible driving , but if you say so 😊
@@paco9713 Really? My experience was great, but it might have been a fluke if you say so. It reallly was great tho...
@JohnDoe-dn9ez Well , I'm in Greece now, the worst thing is you, guys don't give a sh.t about pedestrians crossing at zebra crossing, which is a no no to me.

As a Greek, I hope you are having a good time here (apart from the driving 😅)
@georgek5737 OH, yes. In February I was 23 days from Alexandroupoli to Kalamata, now again - I love Greece, a few years in a row we have been in Tolo for vacation, so it's one of my favorite regions. I love lemoni kotopulo opposite Lidl in Nafplio. Also, the souvlaki in Miloi -sooo delicious ! I'm considering buying a plot in the area, as I have camper and a boat, so to spend at least winter there!
31:00 The same way a boy goes for no.2.
An argument could be made that this type of toilet is leaning towards hygiene rather than comfort, with only shoes touching the specified areas and keeping yourself hovering over it.
Also the same type of toilet is found around the world, eg in public places in Japan, they call it " washiki toire".
Thanks for sharing!
This made me laugh so hard. I think he envisioned his daughter standing like a boy for No 1 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Conversation Exchange is a good way to find a Greek language buddy ie a Greek person who wants to learn English or another language and will help you learn Greek.
Conversation exchange? Forgive my ignorance, is that a service? A website? Thanks
You are totally correct it is an ignorance not to learn the local language the country you are living in.
My husband and I started the process of buying a house about half hour from nafplio. I am from Puerto Rico and spanish is my first language. This is the first video I watch from your channel. I will look for Greek your videos about the language. I will be back in August but probably move in a year. That should be enough time to learn enough Greek to get me started. Any suggestions? Me encantan sus videos! Gracias!
Wow, that is great! My advice is to watch Greek TV shows. Just listen to as much Greek as possible. Learn the basics and put them it practice by speaking. Aqui estoy a la orden si necesitas ayuda 🇬🇷🧿🙏💙

The squat position is medically known to be the best way to have number 2 toilet release, rather than the western seat position.
I'm not sure why but i love your videos, i really enjoy them. So much positivity. I'm really happy you enjoy your life in Greece. Cool guy!
My daughters attended primary and high school in Greece, so I’m very familiar with the Turkish toilets 😂 They are perceived as more hygienic and don’t forget that humans are naturally ment to squat to do their business 😂
I was there on Monday and i left today. A small vacation for two days only. I walked all over the town and sometimes i caught myshelf looking for you. Firstly many thanks for the content so far, absolutely loving it. My wife and I started visiting the Greek islands together about 12 years ago and have fell in love with the People, the Culture and the Food. 1 x Kos, 1 x Zakynthos, 2 x Crete, 1 x Corfu, 6 x Kefalonia & Naxos planned for later this year.
Everytime something goes wrong here in the North of England I say to the Wife 'Thats it, were moving to Greece' However I think that it will never happen so we will just have to keep visiting. Really want to do the Mainland, and get to know the 'Real Greece' as opposed to 'Tourist Greece'
We both retire in a few years at 55 and keep joking the kids that we are moving to Greece and leaving them to fend for themselves (they are both grown up with their own kids) and there will be no inheritance for them.
Also trying to learn to speak Greek (also by listening to radio) and practice where I can on friends who have a Greek Restaurant in town.
Anyway less of my chatting on, looking forward to future videos and 'efcharistó gia óli ti sklirí douleiá sas, eínai ypérocho pou ektimísate'
Glad you enjoy living in Greece, and very interesting seeing your perspective after so many years being here. Curious about your next vids, keep it up 👍

another nice video. thank you
Thank you🇬🇷💙
I absolutely agree with you about the fact that it’s the immigrant who needs to adapt to their chosen country. Ok, so I’m from Britain and it’s crazy how many people I know in France (where I live) who, despite being here for 30 odd years, have not bothered too much to learn French. They’re in their little English speaking bubble. It’s weird!
I’m hearing impaired and I’ve managed an upper-intermediate level of French. I don’t have any English speaking friends. All my interactions outside of my home are in French. We’ve integrated extremely well.
The reason why your videos are being recommended to me is because I’m going on holiday to Corfu and I want to learn some Greek for my stay. I’m not someone who expects others to speak English. I want to be able to be polite and express thanks to people in their language and in their country.
… and watching your videos, Greece looks stunning! I’m wondering if I chose the right country to relocate to. Although, I love France and my buddies here.
By the way, I heard that between Spanish and Greek, there are many shared pronunciations. Does this make Greek pronunciation easier for you seeing as you speak Spanish?
Thanks for your videos, they’re super interesting 😊
Greek is totally different from Spanish language and more difficult than Spanish….If you speak Fr is easier to learn Spanish ..but if you are interested and take your time being able to speak to other Greek people without fear for your grammatical mistakes you will learn it probably in 2-3 years …good luck ..
Greek and Spanish are similar, and it’s easier for someone to learn Greek if they speak Spanish. That being said, I know a Chinese person who speaks perfect Greek after living here for only 6 months. It’s all about the hunger for learning the language. But one thing is for sure, there are no shortcuts to learning Greek.
@@Lisimachos Ah, that’s interesting. I speak French and I’m using it to learn Spanish instead of English. It’s funny how by knowing French and English gives you many clues to Spanish and Italian. It’s fascinating. Happy learning 😀
@@MyGreekLifestyle Yeah, totally agree that the “why” you’re learning is the biggest factor in making progress. I’m learning a little Greek for a trip to Corfu. I don’t want to take for granted that everyone speaks English. Besides, I find it super interesting learning new languages. Good luck with this TH-cam channel, so far, it’s been mega interesting. Thanks 😊
your videos are really inspiring, thank you and congrats. i hope your channel gets the support and love it deserves, the same love you have for greece. keep up the good work!

Thank you my friend 🇬🇷💙🙏
If your friend doesnt want to learn greek its ok....we respect anything and anyone's choices as Greeks as long as respect is in the air...from both sides of course...but one advantage of learning greek is that you can learn easily other languages very fast if you know greek...we speak loud cause we are sentimental too much...we are open to meet ppl...when asked always find a way to help foreigners...of course you will meet bad greeks but you know there are everywhere in the world...so conclusion if you are not ready to adapt in an ORGANIZED CHAOS in Greece better have 2nd thoughts...SPOILER with fish you drink ouzo and with meat you drink tsipouro or wine

It's unfortunate that your friend doesn't want to learn the basics of Greek. British did you say? That doesn't surprise me. I had a friend who was giving me a lesson on how he isn't coming back unless we offer the all inclusive vacation with the free bar package. Oh well. They miss out on so much by not getting immersed in the villages and culture. Even if you try a little with the language, Greeks will be a way more endearing towards you. Because they know it's hard to learn Greek and the mere fact that you made an effort shows respect and puts you in a different category. Maybe they might even share some of that special tsipouro they save for friends and family. Things like that.
Well said. I totally agree with you 🇬🇷🧿💙
I love that you comment on things that we Greeks wouldn't give a damn about.
Like the one about toilets and paper or the salad that we have to have in the middle of the table.
Ha ha, there I was, all ready to embrace Greek language, culture and lifestyle... and then came point 5! 💩A total deal-breaker and unacceptable. Thanks for the enlightening video!
There's a way around it. Read the comment I just posted.

Same in Greece. Although I always thank people who stop here when I need to cross the road
any tips or resources for learning greek? I have a book course that is quite good but curious if you have any other tips or resources to learn the language. Thank you!
TH-cam
Τhe best method, i would say, is to find a Greek who wants to learn your language (or learn to speak it better), and he can teach you Greek. Τhen, at the same time, you can read some Greek texts or books, and in a short time, you will know how to speak them. At least the basics. Greek is a relatively difficult language (but it's worth learning it), and I wouldn't suggest trying alone, on your own (you can learn it that way, but it will be more difficult). There is also some good on-line sites for learning languanges, you might find them useful

Personally I have never come across any toilet without the ring on it 😅, but maybe because I almost never use public toilets 😬. However, in coffee shops and restaurants, the full equipment of the toilet is always there 😅. But, as far as I know, Greek women never seat on it😑, we’d rather do our job from some kind of distance, by bending our knees as much as needed 😂😂😂 Better safe than sorry! We seat only on our homes toilet comfortably 🤷🏻♀️
The Turkish toilet is very convenient especially for kids, for hygienic reasons once again…. we just need to squat all the way down, and you are good to go …. for it 😂😂😂😂
Monday and Wednesday shops are 9 to 5 .
Other than that as a Greek i ran away. And you dont need to talk Greek. It depends your lifestyle. When i was living in Greece i mostly hang out with expats speaking english. It also depends where you are.
On Mondays and Wednesday afternoons shops are closed if you are Greek, then you know this very well. This of course is different if you live in Athens or another big city. I have no idea where you ran away, but I am pretty sure that you need to speak the language if you want to integrate into the community as a foreigner.
@@MyGreekLifestyle
Seems i am wasting my time.
Stay in your bubble.
I am out.
@@stathis-kohphangan8105What bubble he is correct. Here in Sparti and Skala Lakonias in Monday and Wednesday the shops are only open until the noon. They are closed in the afternoon. Unless they are alisides which is major chain stores, like Kotsovolos. Even Sklavenitis and most supermarkets here are following the local store hours established by the local store unions.
@@MyGreekLifestyleDon't mind him everything you said in your video is absolutely correct. You need to also make one to warn people who want to move here. Coming for vacations is good but living here is a challenge every day. Most people would have left this country if we could. And don't get me wrong we love our country but the state makes living in it very difficult. And this are going downhill by the day. In general no system works here including the health one where I work and asidosia I don't know how to translate this word in English is what is prevalent here in Greek society. There's no rules and not only in driving. Everything is gone downhill and continues to do so by the day
You are so right about the driving. We are drive like crazy. Every year, 1.500 persons died on the asphalt. I shame as a greek.
It's a big problem ⚠️
On another note about the language... Most English speaking people are mostly in very touristy areas but on the other hand many of the older people still don't have it. Gen X like my husband and Millennials like my self learned English either at schools or private schooling.... Me my son and daughter are self taught (I did get a degree tho lmao) but the most recent years many kids choose to learn multiple languages dunno why (shifting to more academic needed languages or their families) but I've seen quite a few kids learning two or three languages. And in some academic areas languages is really needed for example the field I'm studying which is International Relations... Yes English is enough but other languages are preferred like Italian French Russian etc... Also I don't know how or why but Spanish for Spanish speakers it seems easier to learn the Greek Language than any other like English speakers. They still use the Turkish toilets because it's easier to clean and keep clean than the normal ones. My daughter never goes at school to pee. She's eleven and still refuses to go.
Thank you for sharing 🙏💙🇬🇷
Much respect! Any expat who doesn’t speak the language of the country they live in, should be booted out!!
Congratulations on learning more than basic Greek. Learning at a later age is difficult. However participating is more difficult. I understand your attempt but youtube doesn't describe the long term difficulties with the language.

I am Greek and I find nothing wrong for someone just eating a Horiatiki salad alone. It could be the best vegan meal if you do not eat meat. And I am against putting rules or doctrines on how a tourist should eat. You go on vacation to relax, not follow another set of rules. You put unnecessary pressure on how people should experience their vacation. They should feel free and welcome to experience their vacations the way they want. My take
I am married to a Greek woman and I have been living in Greece since 2010. I have never ever seen a native Greek eat a bold of Greek salad all by themselves in a taverna. Besides there are plenty of vegan dishes that tourists can enjoy apart from eating a bold of Greek salad only. One of the main reasons tourists get overcharged in tavernas is because they order a Greek salad per person and nothing else. I think that the word “doctrine” and Greek salad in the same sentence is as odd as some eating it all by themselves.
@@MyGreekLifestyleI would not like a tourist or anyone for the matter to feel bad ordering a Greek salad as a main dish for himself/herself. Ofc there are Ntolmadakia, Gemista, Fasolakia, Papoytsakia etc but Horiatiki is a full meal as well.

My logic says.."what if i 💩"? 😂😂 i cant put paper with 💩 in the bin. Its gonna smell and stick to bin. How is the person gonna clean or someone else use the toilet withat smell. If someone can tell me as i m now 41 years old and this mystery needs to be solved. 😂 How do other people do ?😂
I once read that the greek sewage pipes are narrower, so it is easier to have blockages of the wastes on their way to their final destination. Moreover, by saying don't throw papers in the toilet, they also mean paper towels, wet ones, diapers sanitaries etc, as they have already faced similar problems in the past. The bins are usually changed very often.
As for the turkish toilets, they are connected to the sewage system, same flushing, and are more hygienic, especially for girls or women, as there is no touching of any kind. Once you get the hang of it, it is actually better 😊
With regards to driving, indeed we Greeks are reckless drivers, even worse in the countryside 'cos roads are literally empty, thus more tempting to drive faster. For years Greeks despised the seat belt, were you buckled up they would laugh at you. Whenever a foreign asks about hiring a car in Greece, I urge them for outmost attention and eyes wide-opened whilst driving.
Motorcycle riding remains dangerous, sad to hear and see tourists riding the "gourouna" (ATV) or the scooter when on holidays and act as complete jackasses, some of them sadly riding sozzled and lose their lives.
Regarding the squatting toilet, it's easier to clean it, plus far more relaxing when doo-doo. Don't know why they named it "Turkish", several SE Asian and even Japan have them too.
PS: For a foreigner your pronunciation of Greek is amazing. You'd have been pretty spot on were you fluent in "ceceo" Castilian Spanish.😛
Thank you my friend for your comment and for your compliment about my Greek🇬🇷💙🧿🙏
If your uncle or cousing are watching the video, they probably won't be offended because they don't speak English! :D
You are right 😂
You were offended by someone not knowing greek after living there for a year? I
