I could listen to Alan Alda talk all day, his voice hasn’t changed at all. I’m a OTR trucker and listen to lots of Audible while driving and he was a narrator on the World War Z audiobook, hearing Hawkeye Pierce talk about zombies was priceless 🤣

I don't think anyone who watched MASH, who wasn't touched by the characters, humility and storyline has a soul. I grew up watching this series and it can still evoke every emotion possible. The statement it made still stands true today.

The show MASH was genius. It was a comedy, medical, and war show all rolled into one. I think the word "dramedy " was coined for this show. Even though the viewer didn't see a lot of actual combat scenes in this show, it conveyed the horrors of war, both physically and emotionally. And I could tell that this show was a labor of love for everyone involved in it, because of the care that went into making every episode. MASH was a prime example of what a television series could and should be.

Still, I loved Wayne Rogers and Maclean Stevenson and Larry Linville and the rest. They were all great.
As for the movie, actors Donald Sutherland and Elliot Gould shared the honor, i believe, of making a fantastic film -- aside from director Robert Altman. Gould and Sutherland together helped make the movie -- a grittier, darker piece -- work brilliantly.

I remember one episode that John and Hawkeye were practicing boxing for a boxing match against a SGT from another military base and they were using Frank's duffel bag for a punching bag and Margaret Houlihan walks by saying "Isn't that Frank's bag?" John without missing a step said " I thought you were Frank's bag" I laughed so hard and coffee shot from my nose.

I like the scene where Colonel Flagg was trying to get a prisoner being tended to at the M.A.S.H. released so he could execute him. He needed two doctors to sign off on it and Trapper and Hawkeye weren't about to. Margaret realizes Frank could and exclaims, " Wait a minute! You're a doctor, Frank!" Hawkeye quips "Your secret is safe with me. Certainly your patients will never know". Classic 🤣

I really enjoyed watching MASH. It was one of the best sitcoms I ever watched. Hawkeye Pierce is a hero. He is a truly iconic character who brings a perfect blend of wit, humour, and compassion to the show. His quick wit and sharp sense of humour not only provide much-needed comic relief in the midst of the chaos of war but also reflect his ability to cope with the difficult situations he faces. Live long and prosper Alan!

This show must have been so important to people who actually served and survived the Korean war. And the Vietnam war. I know that many service people who came back from Vietnam have committed suicide because of the horrors that they went through and the lack of help they received after. The same thing seems to be happening all the time. People returning from tours in the Middle East and Afghanistan are not receiving the help they need to manage with the mental and physical wounds that they acquired while in active service.
I know it was "just a tv show" and was a comedy at that, but the people working on the show did try to present the fact that people were killed and maimed in war. We seem to have forgotten that.

    • @scottknode898

The writers did base the show of real life Doctor turned author who wrote Mash and he was like the real Hawkeye Pierce. His name was Richard Hornberger and penned the book Mash under Richard Hooker. He was a recent medical school graduate who was drafted during Korean War and served on real Mash unit to be a surgeon. Hornberger said he did things in surgery that were against army regulations. He used the character of Pierce in his book to be like himself with his humor and wit to help get through the grueling hours in surgery and stress of being on fighting lines in Korea.

Worked with a man that fought in Korea. One night we found him sat down and crying. Asked him what's wrong? All he said was " They would not stop coming, they would not stop coming" Sobbing really hard. He was on a machine gun that had a wall of dead Chinese soldiers in front of it, and this normal man broke. He took council and made a recovery of sorts, but ordinary people were caught in an extra ordinary place.

It was about a robotic surgery instrument and the setting was supposed to be a Mobile Army Field Hospital. I was working with the equipment and keeping folks from coming looking for autographs. During some director time I spent about an hour with him just chatting about this and that. Very pleasant man easy to be with and funny.

After watching MASH for eleven years, essentially being raised on it, the last episode was airing while I was in a night class in college. I fretted until the class break, when my roommate and I slipped away to our room and watched the entire episode with a half dozen other classmates. I have never regretted it.

    • @2themoon863

I was in college myself, but my family had a VCR (or was it a Betamax, can’t remember); I had set it to record as I was in class for the early part. At the time it was said that would be the only time that episode would be shown. Ten years later I caught an ad that the episode was going to be rerun, so I set my VCR to record it no matter whether I was there or not-I was home and watched the whole episode, then saw it again a few years after…and played my recording a few times as well.
