  • If there’s anyone who personifies the resilience, the vision and the contribution of the Jewish people, it’s Itzhak Perlman, whose transcendent violin playing evokes the depth of the human experience.
And the moving new documentary Itzhak, which premiered as part of the American Masters series in October on THIRTEEN, sheds fresh light on Perlman’s personal struggles as a polio survivor and Jewish émigré, reminding us why art is so vital to life. Don’t miss the master in person when he joins acclaimed actor and writer Alan Alda for a conversation on his life and work, touching on the fascinating similarities and differences between performing music and acting.

Love Itzhak! He most of all, has greatly influenced & was/is a real inspiration for me as a violinist since I was a kid in the 1970s & 80s. Most of all, him as a warm-hearted, whimsical, and deeply passionate person who is an amazing postive, roll model in so many ways that he might not realize! He's done so much for young musicians & all the people in his life .He loves & lives life to the fullest in the ways that matter most. I hope lives over 100. He was & is my hero!

Such a treat to hear from both these gentlemen! How fortunate I was to get to hear Itzhak when I was a kid on his first American tour. He comes annually to San Francisco to play for the retired musicians benefit.

Two amazing figures from the entertainment world. Alan the tremendous versatile actor, and Itzhak, one of the greatest musicians in history, and one of the greatest violinists. How Itzhak remains so down to earth is just something to marvel at...look at some of the greatest performers in classical music - some are very nice, but it's like if you were to run into Itzhak somewhere, he'd totally have a conversation with you versus some of them who just have no social skills despite being miraculous interpreters of the great composers. And Alan - he's pretty much the same way. Hopefully people know him for his work outside of "M*A*S*H." He has worked in the biz forever and a day and whatever play or TV show or film he's in, it's always that much better because he's in it. And despite being "Hollywood" talents, they always lived in New York.

When friends, each with a sense of humor and mutual rapport get together, the results are so much different, and better. Way more fun than the usual stiff interviewer.

31:18 Correct! I can still hear a young Alan Alda say to his MASH bunk mate: Don't worry, Time wounds all heels! That was some 40 years ago, but obviously it had an impact.

It’s supposed to be a joke about the candy Reese’s Pieces.
