One of the things I love about this movie was the tiered depiction of the criminal underworld. You really get the visual impression of how money trickles down in this environment, with each consecutive "boss" enjoying an exponentially greater quality of life than their underlings. I remember watching Payback in a nightclub back in the day and being amazed at how well I could follow the progression of the story, even without any audio at all, simply because the director had done such a great job of visually showing Porter working his way up the food chain.
I was fortunate to be in high school and get my drivers license in the late 90s. Headed to the theater every weekend. So many good movies. "Payback" is a great homage to the Film Noir era of the 30s and 40s. Really fun movie.
Payback is more proof that 1999 is one of the greatest years in film history and the 1990s is one of the greatest decades. Mel Gibson is phenomenal as this kind of dark and unnerving character. He can be as intense and memorable as Robert DeNiro
This movie proves one thing. There's a time to be nice, and then there's a time when you get revenge after being a doormat for a long time. Porter is not nice.
The Darwyn Cooke comic/graphic novel was an adaptation of the original Parker novel, The Hunter by Richard Stark. The first movie to use this source material was Point Blank starring Lee Marvin, 1967.
It's a pity they don't make movies like this nowadays. Today it's all about super-heros and nowhere near the reality of the crime organization and such. Nice reaction by the way for a first. Maybe next time you need to make shorter reactions. I mean 1 hour and 50 mn is a bit too long, don't you think?

This was taken from a crime comic novel called Parker. Same storyline and everything I'm going to look it up now. I'll give you the date and author.
