Payback is more proof that 1999 is one of the greatest years in film history and the 1990s is one of the greatest decades. Mel Gibson is phenomenal as this kind of dark and unnerving character. He can be as intense and memorable as Robert DeNiro

I was fortunate to be in high school and get my drivers license in the late 90s. Headed to the theater every weekend. So many good movies. "Payback" is a great homage to the Film Noir era of the 30s and 40s. Really fun movie.

This was taken from a crime comic novel called Parker. Same storyline and everything I'm going to look it up now. I'll give you the date and author.

The Darwyn Cooke comic/graphic novel was an adaptation of the original Parker novel, The Hunter by Richard Stark. The first movie to use this source material was Point Blank starring Lee Marvin, 1967.

It's a pity they don't make movies like this nowadays. Today it's all about super-heros and nowhere near the reality of the crime organization and such. Nice reaction by the way for a first. Maybe next time you need to make shorter reactions. I mean 1 hour and 50 mn is a bit too long, don't you think?

This movie proves one thing. There's a time to be nice, and then there's a time when you get revenge after being a doormat for a long time. Porter is not nice.

One of the things I love about this movie was the tiered depiction of the criminal underworld. You really get the visual impression of how money trickles down in this environment, with each consecutive "boss" enjoying an exponentially greater quality of life than their underlings. I remember watching Payback in a nightclub back in the day and being amazed at how well I could follow the progression of the story, even without any audio at all, simply because the director had done such a great job of visually showing Porter working his way up the food chain.

I think it's very realistic that it took Jenny many years for her to get over the emotional damage of her father's abuse. It also gave Forrest time to stop floating like a feather and go home. I actually remember Chinese international ping pong tournaments on TV, from when I was a kid. I couldn't tell, but did you catch Forrest giving John Lennon lyrics for "Imagine?" I still always have a tie dye shirt. Those times are part of me forever.

It was a ride through time. Forrest had a low IQ so that he doesn't have an opinion about the times. He has no opinion of segregated schools, the war of Vietnam, the K.K.K., Black Panthers, meeting presidents or China. Unlike his peers, like how Lt. Dan shouted an Asian slur on the battlefield, though he got engaged to a Vietnamese woman at the end.

The "suspicious" stuff going on at the hotel was the Watergate Scandal. In 1972, information was stolen from the Democratic National Convention after a break-in. It turned out that the people involved had ties to Richard Nixon's administration and the attempts to cover that up are what led to Nixon stepping down as president. The implication being that Forrest unknowingly exposed the scandal because he thought people needed help getting the lights back on.

I used to think that Jenny didn't tell Forrest about their son was because she didn't want to burden him after she left him the last time without telling, but from now I believe she didn't hide him from Forrest, she wasn't able to get in contact with him because he had been running for three years.

But she wouldn't have been able to get in touch with him during those three years when he was a baby. Maybe, because time had passed on, she didn't want to burden Forrest especially after the way she left the last time until she got sick and wanted them to finally meet and give Little Forrest a family before she died.
