Good morning Eric. This camshaft challenge is shaping up to be very interesting. You have really have pulled together an interesting group of competitors. I am excited to see the outcome of the camshaft shootout. Glad that you're going to have 4 or 5 days of Dyno testing. Thanks for sharing the updates. And, used car shopping is not fun! I feel for you. Have a great weekend. 👍
Eric, you have lit everybody up with this cam challenge. I am so excited to see your results. You have cut through the BS and inspired a lot of people to get on board. Keep up the good work. In case you haven't seen it yet, DV says your porting is near top notch.
eric this was one of your best rants LOL your show your choices take the money for testing the good people know your honesty the truth for each cam thanks
Lol, the low oil story was great! Sorry about that luck! I have watched your channel for a few years now, I did click on the cam challenge video until I saw it on the Powell racing channel. First off I am sorry, butt what a great exposure for you! Hope it brings in the success you deserve!
Powell the only one that doesn't bull shit people. Doesn't get caught up in the internet trends and is a see it to believe it guy. I think he's got it in the bag, especially if he's got .075 range on his push rod selection. Good luck Mr. Powell.
Just donated , hopefully DZ gets a cam in to you . Thanks for all you do . I to hate front wheel drives . My daughter (16) has an 03 dodge stratus ( used to be wife’s daily till 18 ) . What a joke to work on . Valve cover under the freakin cowl , had a couple sticky lifters … bla bla got it fixed but Eff me lol
Come on people, we are about to get priceless information on this test, let’s step up and donate enough to help Eric earn money while he’s not at work making money, have a heart!❤
ill be really suprised if out a group of top guys from the field there is one cam with magic heuge gains, Ill guess the power spread will be 5% or less.
My dad used to winterize the lawn equipment by draining the oil in the fall. Without checking the oil in the riding mower, I towed sleds in the snow until it locked up. That's what sons who don't think do. :)
youre damn straight, we just want the data, whoever wins gets bragging rights but the viewers all win with the information that these dynos will provide. Thanks to anyone who donated money for dyno time, it is very appreciated by viewers.
I would love to see Martin Smallwood, Richard Holdener, Brian Tooley and John Bewley get in on this. Theyre all very familiar with the LS platform and know how to spec a camshaft very well.
My niece did the same thing on her car. They called me to come look at it and I told my brother get me a socket to fit that filter. Full of metal. Pull the dip stick, no oil. 4 quarts low.
I've messed with plenty of ecotecs with timing chain issues. They are not bad at all to work on. The tensioners are oil pressure fed and are prone to failure. The metal in the filter its probaly chain material. You might even get away with just popping a new tensioner in it for 50 bucks and run it. Its on the back side of the engine on the passenger side (obviously). Uses a 32mm socket (same as the oil filer). Flex head ratchet helps. Another comon failure that causes the same thing is the vvt solenoids on top of the valve cover. Super easy to pop new ones in if they fail an ohm test. They should meausre 8-13 ohms each. They also have little screens that get full of crud. As long as the chain guides aren't broken these cheap easy fixes should get it back on the road. If they are bad get the chain kit from Cloyes and a cheap timing cover gasket. 100 bucks and 5-6 hours of work and your good to go...Then some snake oil to help de-carbon the oil rings so it doesn't happen again...as fast.
Quick way to check valve clearance stack some feelers between the valve and the rocker and roll it over manually won't tell you anything about the radial clearance but give you alittle peace of mind
Sure would have been nice to have Yours/Eric's/George B' & others channel/info for us in the hinter lands in the 70's. sadly out of the game today @ 79 .But still interested. donated
The reason why the cam angle sensor is showing an issue is because the chain tensioner is oil fed. No chain tension, skip teeth. Feed that engine some 15w40 rotella to make up for the huge bearing clearences and it might last for years
I have a 2012 accord v6 btw. Almost 200,000 miles and still runs like the day I bought it. No oil leaks, nothing. Lets you set cruise control at 125 btw😅
The 2.4 eotec needs to have the timing chain changed every 100k miles. Treat it like a timing belt. The metal in the oil filter housing is probably from the chain rubbing against the block for several thousand miles .If the motor is not knocking would probably be ok with a new timing chain kit. Timing chain is super easy too change. About two hours.
Really nice that so many are interested in the challenge. Will be fun to see the result Too bad so many people seem to want to bitch and whine so much about small details..
Just donated $60 usd in the hope you get enough for the 4th day so dv can get his cam in. It wouldn’t be right if we didn’t get to see dv spec a cam in this test
Take the money!! As long as you’re not being bias and show the numbers as they are. After that what difference does it make?! This is science nothing more or less. Your personal opinion will depend on what you’re wanting!

Is it not worth replacing the engine with a salvage unit? I know decent used cars are expensive. But Bishop probably needs a good dependable vehicle for college too. What a pickle! I’m anxious to see the cam challenge. Thanks for the content.
check to see if the metal sticks to a magnet if so its the upper guide worn down by the chain ... i replace the chain with the gm kit and balance shaft chain and guides . and it will last another 200k as long as you keep oil in it ... that 2.4L is the most robust engine gm ever made ... just goes through oil and chains
Too bad on the Malibu engine. You didn't say which 4 cyl engine it has, but from your description it sounds like a 2.4L. GM had a major issue with those early engines, for oil consumption. They did a recall on them, where they would replace sleeves & pistons. They also have a major issue with cam tensioners breaking. When this happens, because it's a interference motor, usually wind up crashing the valves into the pistons. Sounds like you caught it in time. The 2.4L also has a mechanical, high pressure, fuel pump, that winds up leaking fuel past the bladder & fuel actually gets into the crank case. I believe this is the real reason for most of the issues with this engine. When fuel gets mixed in with the oil, it breaks down the oil, which causes excessive wear & oil consumption. You might want to look into GM's recall, If I'm correct that you have a 2.4L.
My son was 17teen before he had van I showed him to change oil on my truck and sent him to do his I put the old oil filter on wall with note my son became a young man and when out and down street was trail of oil I drove down road to friends he was playing video games handed him 2 q of oil.told him find leak was filler luse. Wow😊
I got a cam, I can’t share it though, it has secret specs. I’m going to Use it at race wars against Hector. I hear he’s got a full motec setup on a Spoon engine.
DV is very particular and I'd guess his biggest complaint would be not spending the extra time needed to properly install the cam and confirm things. However, everyone has been told that none of them are getting that attention to detail.
Hey Eric, I did email about entering, but sadly, the specs I wanted to run are impossible with the dot-to-dot condition. I could do it if the 9 way adjustable cam chain was an option. However, I see this as unfair to everyone else who have already ground their cam to dot-to-dot specs. Point being is I wanted a intake centerline of 100, where the cam blanks are 110 so there simply isn't enough meat in the lobe to cut such a spec to go dot-to-dot. The only way is cut a LSA of 108, then go +8 advanced on the 9 way. To anyone interested, I was to run, Intake 240@0.050 on 100 centerline Exhaust 250@0.050 on 116 centerline. Lobe Separation Angle 108 0.655in lift in/ex. Even the cam grinder said "no one runs that spec," which would of been interesting to see. The other is it would run 30° of overlap above 0.050 which would be interesting to see how this would effect idle quality.
I think people would love to see david vizard put his money where his mouth is. This is a perfect chance for his camshft program to prove its worth. I would Love to see how good he does or does not do.

WAY TO GO!!!
Really excited to see Howard’s and DV. Thanks for putting this on!

Brian Salter is an interesting entry
Just started watching his videos. Really like his stuff and good to listen to while wrenching.
@@Adrenacyde He's an ace sharing lots of good stuff
This is very interesting,. For the guy out here it will be the best learning curve we will get.
Summit Racing has always been a great company in my opinion they always make it right just my experience with them glad they are helping out!
Looking forward to seeing the results of the cam challenge Eric. Forgive yourself on the oil check guidance, yes it is expensive. No one is perfect.
I would love to see Martin Smallwood, Richard Holdener, Brian Tooley and John Bewley get in on this.
Theyre all very familiar with the LS platform and know how to spec a camshaft very well.
Norris did good. As well as Texas speed cam.
Thanks
This is really cool, thanks for doing this. Donated!
My 1986 GT Ford mustang 5.0 came from the factory oil level sensor it worked great.
Good to see Summit step up.
Its probably an off the shelf unit but thats fine, it gives a baseline that everyone has access to. It is also really cheap advertising for them.
You can only do what you can do by your rules and good luck with fun contests. I think it’s going to be fun. I really hope all the camshaft come.
Not a failure. A learning lesson, and an expensive on sure.
Some of the time it's only a lesson if they are the one paying the bill.
❤ Thank you for your knowledge and videos USA 🇺🇸
I can’t wait to see the results of the contest !! Exciting
My niece did the same thing on her car. They called me to come look at it and I told my brother get me a socket to fit that filter. Full of metal. Pull the dip stick, no oil. 4 quarts low.
This test benefits everyone, especially the ones whos cams don't win. Take every penny and gift card you can get.
Amen on kids just getting more expensive.
There's a movie with Kurt Russell called Used Cars.....its a prerequisite for dad's and son's in my hometown looking at used cars.
100 percent. What data. Going buy the winner. 👍🇺🇸

The competition is a great idea. Thank you. Is Bullet or Flow Tech Induction taking part?
Can't wait to see Brian salters and david vizards cams
Calling Mike Jones & Brian Tooley! $1000 up for grabs…..Crickets🤣 Maybe Billy Godbold should be looking @ this🤣 I hope DV’s cam shows up!👍
I think Mike Jones in as many words said no. Tooley I don’t know about. Same with Billy Godbold.
