Agreed, it is heartwarming to know that someone can go through that kind of trauma or toxic stress and recover to be such a positive and motivating individual who creates entertaining and inspiring content. I’m sure support from Jason and other family has helped over the years.

Great to hear Nikki acknowledging her inner child(ren). I learned they were real back in the 80' s when I was having a real hard time. So good to realise the anxiety(etc) may not be all your adult self's doing - and you can help calm them🤗
Alice Miller " The Drama of Being a Child" helped enormously. Read that book first.
And, Wow, great to admire what you two are doing together from my landlocked armchair. (It's an age thang). ❤️

I grew up in Auckland. One half of my family came to Waipu about 160 years ago. Visited the caves many times over the years. A family friend had a farm right next to the caves a we used to stay with him as children. He was a half blind pig farmer and worked the property himself. On my honeymoon 1973 I took my wife to the cave. A nice San Francisco girl. She sat in the wet cave for at least an hour just looking at the lights. Up until that poin she had not believed me when I told her about glow worms. Yours is one of the rare videos I have seen that starts to show how bright the caves can be. I have sat in the cave and read a book if it us silent. In the summer in the north I have seen small concentrations of glowworms on the bank of creeks when I have been camping. Love the video. Thank you.

I’m so very relieved that you were able to move past the difficult childhood and grow so beautifully. Good for you.

  • @WSallai

Nikki & Jason, this was a wonderful episode on many levels: 1) The “risk” undertaken to find the Glow Worms in their natural habitat; 2) The lengths you took to capture them on both stalls & video; 3) The depths (how far in) you went to explore the cavern. The woman singing in the cavern was beautiful, as you correctly called it being like in a cathedral, and was quite the treat.
Nikki, I am so sorry that your early childhood was so traumatic. You are most fortunate that you had a father, along with his family, that took you and helped you overcome that trauma with love & care. Clearly, there are memories that still haunt you, but that toy and time helped you heal. You are luckier still that you have a mate that provides you with love, security, and the support & understanding that you need. We saw a bit of that from his acceptance of taking care of your sister as a teen. You have become a wonderful, beautiful young woman filled with empathy and love. It gladdens my heart to see you two are happy together and are willing to share your lives with us (me).

Very few of us actually lives the "leave it to beaver" childhood we saw on tv. Most of us have some early trauma to deal with as adults. Thank you for bringing some "light" to those of us who often have had to deal with varying levels of darkness in our lives! And living out a childhood dream is a WONDERFUL experience isn't it! I wish I could give more than a single thumbs up for this one. Great video work for such a high ISO!!

@@donnabaardsen5372 We always have two choices; to be a survivor or a victim. I chose to be a survivor. And while you may not like or accept the term "trauma", it's a real word and a real experience for FAR too many children. It's not something I "hang on to" but it IS part of what made me who I am today. I do not know what you went through as a child, and you do not know what I went through as a child, so making judgements based on simple terminology is not wise. I grew up in the 50's and early 60's too. And wondered why MY life was so drastically different than what I was seeing on TV. Can you imagine how many other children felt the same way I did? My wife...she DID live the life she saw on TV, loving, caring parents who put being good parents first in their lives. We've been married for almost 50 years now and OUR children have benefitted from both of us, from me learning what NOT to do and from her knowing what TO do to be good parents.

@@hapnewsom9217 your statement rings true. It’s also exactly describes the way my wife and I grew up and went about raising and nurturing exceptional (obviously I’m biased) children. Sometimes we aren’t shown how to do something correctly but if you’re paying attention you’ll be shown how to do it incorrectly which can be just as enlightening even if it is a lot less satisfying.

Nikki, the additional story of the rough start to your life makes you even more of a warrior. EVERY ONE has a story that could have made excuses for a stagnet life. It seems to me, only the special ones have the ability to take charge of their lives, and vow to enjoy it. I really really enjoy your weekly episodes. I love EVERYTHING about it-- the adventure, the sailing, the appreciation for glorious mother nature, the problem solving, goal setting, and now the overcoming adverstiy that you have so graciously shared. I want so bad for some of the obstacles you and Jason have been experiencing, since the pandemic, to lighten up already!! You both deserve some more stress free adventures, and maybe even some easier freedom to visit the special people, and family in your lives. Stay safe, healthy, and continue to embrace your optimistic attitude that has been an amazing fuel as you go forward.

@@familyupgrade That's right, they filmed LotR in NZ! I'd not have guessed that Howard Shore's leitmotifs were garnered from extensive exposure to NZ native culture. Most of his music does not sound Maori. And this seems about as far from Haka as I can guess. The _Lament for Gandalf_ in Lothlorien from the movie "Fellowship of Ring" was the one I was reminded of. Now I realize the young woman's chant is not the same, just reminiscent. In fact, it also reminds me of some of the leitmotifs found in the series Doctor Who, perhaps one of the more contemporary seasons, with maybe Tennant or Smith portraying the Doctor. Perhaps some musical progressions are universal. th-cam.com/video/YMjKPVBNQ0E/w-d-xo.html

So glad you found peace. And what a story! You are very brave to tell it. We spent 5 years volunteering with BACA - Bikers Against Child Abuse. We've heard stories that will make your head spin. We can only imagine what it's like. Children are resilient, as you've proven. Continue the great adventure, and thanks for sharing it with us.

I just started watching y’all’s channel these past couple months. This one brought me to tears and Nikki didn’t even cry. I love you guys so much just for the content you put out here, and the enthusiastic starburst that is always Nikki. Thank you for sharing such a private series of emotions and story, Nikki, it takes such bravery (even more so than walking through murky water) and you did it! so proud!

What an amazing adventure. How clever of the glow worms. My girls loved their glow worms. So glad you got to see them in person. Thank you so much for sharing both this cave and your past. Sending hugs and I hope you always have your bubbly personality. Isn't it amazing that God brought you and Jason together to go do what you do and help those who can't do that or go there heal.

Your story brought me to tears...tears of sadness as you spoke of your mothers desperation, and then happiness as you revealed how the stuffie glowworm helped protect and save you as life progressed. One would have never thought your early life had been so, so difficult. You clearly demonstrate the power of hope and imagination and the positive effect that kind of thinking endows. You are remarkable.

Wow, what a story Nikki - thank you for sharing. Not all of us come from the perfect family, so it's humbling to hear your story. And thanks to both of you for taking hours and hours to capture the coolest footage! You have way more patience than us - plus we're relieved you didn't get trapped in there by the high waters. Stay safe and thanks for another awesome episode. You are an inspiration.

I am continuously blown away by the quality of content that is put out by so many TH-cam creators. Watching this video today was a gift. This one is really next level. Amazing story telling, other worldly photography, emotion, realism, humor. This one had it all in 18 minutes (Ok, except sailing). What videographer, photographer, TH-camr . . . Says to the themselves, “hey let’s go into the worst possible filming conditions to make a great video!”? Thank you both for putting so much energy into your work and sharing it with us.

Wow Nikki thank you so much for being so vulnerable with us. Brene Brown has always put vulnerability best in my opinion: "Vulnerability is the birthplace of love, belonging, joy, courage, empathy, and creativity." Nikki, Thank you so much for transforming that awful childhood experience into what you have now made of life! Kudos to you! Accept many heartfelt virtual hugs from me! And Jason, you should do so too! ;-)
You (both) have done a great job of capturing a very difficult photography subject into a _great_ video! Nicely done. In my meanderings around kiwiland I enjoyed several hours in the South Island caves where there are glowworms which are near Te Anau which is the underwater power generators from Lake Manopouri (the only place in New Zealand where they drive on the right side of the road!).
I entered a few hours before sunset, and promptly lost track of time! In those caves the water is so deep that boats are used for all aspects of the tour and propulsion is done by pulling on fixed ropes. When I emerged, there was an amazingly vivid view of the Southern Cross!

Nikki, your bravery in telling your heart wrenching life's story was so moving to hear. I couldn't help but choke up, as I was a single father of two whose mother disappeared for many years. The old saying that whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger certainly applies, doesn't it. Jason surely seems to be a wonderful man for you to share your life with now that you've chiseled away the pain of the harshness of your childhood. What a lucky man to have such a beautiful soul by his side.

Amazingly brave of you to share your story - I hope it helps someone to see the life you built. I find myself incredibly thankful for the person(s) who helped save that small child and get her back to her family, who must have been frantic with worry and fear over what could be happening to you. Maybe it will encourage others to do something when they see a child in need or danger. It also adds another dimension to you and Jason stepping up for your younger sister when she needed security. I recall a post you made around one of your anniversaries, about how in your marriage you have never once doubted his love and I thought how lucky you were because I don't think I know anyone who never had any doubts over so many years. But, perhaps your experiences have made you the person who can accept and return and APPRECIATE that devotion so you have been blessed by a partner who wants to give and receive in a lovely reciprocal circle so there is no room for those doubts between you two. I've always liked seeing how you both do the 'marriage work' by being thoughtful of each other, doing small things, saying nice things, not scoring off the other unless it's part of a private joke we can see but not get but know there is no maliciousness behind it. You show in every video that your togetherness is important to you, and I appreciate that, perhaps even more now, knowing how hard you must have fought to overcome that terrible time. You fought and you won, living well is the best revenge - you've given those years and that experience the finger and YOU WON!
I've followed you two from back in your RV days and have enjoyed watching the sailing journey. I have to say - I think both of you are happier on the water and cruising. It's been lovely watching your happiness. I hope you have many more happy seasons!
