    During this lockdown I broke out my old collection from when I was a kid. Then I attended a card show with my daughter. Now, I'm buying a ton of cards and watching your channel. You do a great job and I love watching you talk cards. Thanks for keeping us watching and making me more excited to get back into the hobby.

    This is the best nerd card channel for sure and I mean that in a good way! Too many channels just talking about flipping and not enough people talking about the stories about why they're in the hobby in the first place. Really enjoy this series as it reminds me why I got into the hobby in the first place.

      Been trying to put my finger on why I just skip over other sports cards TH-camrs, and this is exactly it. SilverJackify (th-cam.com/channels/2Fs77csT3wsy2yNhaIqGyA.html) is another great sports cards focused TH-cam channel.

    The identical card being graded a 2 and then a 7 by the same company just shows how ridiculous card grading can be.

      That is why I think grading will be the demise of this round of the hobby rise.

      Grading is becoming more for authenticity on older cards. Eye appeal is the key!

    • @cedarjustin
      @cedarjustin 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yeah. I suspect we will see a significant grading scandal come to the surface in the next few years. The grading companies are waaay too cozy with the companies whose cards they are evaluating. Panini Encased has already been proven to have Beckett rubber stamping 10’s without looking at the card.

    Hi Chris. Your videos are very well edited together. I really love how you interject a video clip such as the reggie Miller 8 points. I also love hearing your stories. Very good description. I'd love to hear the value of each of your cards when you are showing them (if you are comfortable) and also I would love to see your collection as a whole...such as your card room etc. However you have it stored. Ripken was my favorite player too and I got his autograph in Seattle at the Kingdome in 1983. The year the orioles won the world series

    I like the Ripken Jr story & the Gretzky card. Gretzky was my favorite when I was growing up. I met him as a 6 year old and got a couple Autographs for me & my Cousin. I still remember everything I said to Wayne that day. I made him laugh. Keep up the good work with the videos & stories.

  • @zachbush7923
    @zachbush7923 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    It's always fun looking through a bulk lot of commons and finding a gem like the Gretzky or Koufax. I got a lot like that back in the early-mid 2000s that just happened to have a Tom Brady rookie in it. It wasn't one of his main rookies, and it wasn't in the best of shape, so it's not worth much even today. But it's still a thrill to find something like that in a pile of cards that are otherwise mostly junk.

    • @emerygm
      @emerygm 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Similar story on my end. I was moving out of my parents house into my home with my future wife and I found a couple opened packs of 2000 Score football tucked in a small box with some other cards and stickers from like 1991 Upper Deck baseball or something. Opened the packs up to see what was inside and one of the cards was Tom Brady, Scoreboard /2000. Low and behold one of the last packs my mom ever bought me was one of my most valuable cards.

    Hey now...Thanks again for a nice Monday morning wake up video from my favorite channel. I hope you can make this a regular weekly video. Love to see part of your PC as I am sure everyone else does. 2 quick questions. How many cards approx in your PC? If you don't feel comfortable answering this next question I completely understand as it may draw attention you dont want. Approximately, what would you value your PC at today? I know there are too many variables to accurately pinpoint but conservatively,what would you guess or approximate? Thanks in advance for reply to questions and for yet another great video and start to the week!!!!!

  • @blueodum
    @blueodum 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    Great video. Drooling a bit over that Koufax, as 1950s Baseball is a focus of mine. Incidentally, PSA absolutely sucks with pre-war slabbing - allowing the Chance card to tilt like that in the holder is an abomination.

    Thanks again Chris for the analysis of 10 cards from your pc & why they mean so much to you. Also enjoyed learning how subjective the grading can be by PSA staff, as evidenced by your example of the Koufax card. From a 2 to a 7 could be several hundred dollars, if you ever decide to sell it someday.

    Reggie Miller was one of my favorite player in the 90s as well. Dude was clutch! I remember watching that game live and it was just crazy!

    Nice set of cardboard. Can’t believe the difference in the two grades of the Koufax rookie. I think there will be a flood of graded cards coming back later this year and devaluing modern graded cards. I usually get graded cards for vintage and authenticity.

      I watched him at a Texas Rangers game in Arlington, everyone was calling him “bubble butt Ricky”......which is kinda weird considering now it would be a homophobic slur or hell even racist, lol, but back then it was just funny 😆....anyways he would put his hand behind his back and do the money sign, like saying yes I have a bubble butt, but I am rich 🤑.....I always thought Ricky was so cool!

      I remember watching Rickey from the left field bleachers in Oakland in 1990. My first game I remember it like it was yesterday. Couldnt believe I was sitting that close to Rickey. That game Jose Canseco hit an absolute moon shot homerun, I didnt think a human being could hit a ball that high and far.

    I finally sent my Topps Wayne Gretzky rookie to PSA earlier this year and it received a grade of 5 as well. Feel great that I have a card you have! Got the 79 Topps set from a little card shop in the 90's, just happened to drive by. I think I paid $120 for the set which was 20 dollars over my budget.

    Great video. Love the back stories and the NBA/NFL footage. Also got laugh out of no need to get Ripken auto authenticated. At that age Thurman Munson was my favorite player. I met him once at Yankee Stadium with my dad and brother. I have autograph from that moment as well as photo of me standing with him while he is doing the actual signing. No need to involve Beckett or PSA there either. Thanks for sharing your collection - be well.

I lived through all the Jordan championships but Reggie Miller is also my favorite basketball player of all time for the same reasons you stated. I love clutch players and really admire players like Josh Beckett and Curt Schilling for the same reasons. Love the stories behind your cards, Chris! Your Ripken signing reminds me of going to Yankees Spring training games as a kid. I grew up in Ft. Lauderdale and would go to games when the old-timers were in town to try to get their autos. I got all the greats on 3x5 index cards and my absolute 2 favorites were Mickey Mantle and Joe DiMaggio. I always kept my 2 best ones in a safe place and a couple of years ago decided to get them framed with a nice pic of the 2 legends. Like your Cal card, I've always known they were real because I personally got them, but I figured it would increase their value if I got them certified. I took them to a TX card show that JSA was at and they were both rejected as fakes. I was really frustrated because I know I stood at a fence to get these signatures in the early 70s as a 10 or 11 yr. old kid. I asked the JSA rep if there was anyone I could talk to and he said he'd see what he could do, but couldn't make any promises. He took pics of the autographs and sent me on my way. A few days later I got a call from someone at JSA and they asked me a bunch of questions about the origin of the signatures. After I told the guy my story, he said he'd send me a letter of authenticity. That made me a lot happier, but it just goes to show you that sometimes even the experts think real signatures are fake. Really interesting story! Its possible they weren't familiar with Mantle's and Dimaggio's auto from the 70s as some players auto changes over time. But that sort of makes yours even cooler.

      @@collectorinvestordealer Yeah, I thought the same thing, but from what I can tell, Mantle and DiMaggio's circa 70s autos remained relatively unchanged up until the time they stopped signing (back when the stars seem to take pride in having a pretty signature). Anyway, I'm a huge fan of your channel...look forward to all the videos, especially the "good stuff!"

    Awesome content! If you love collecting cool stuff, I recommend Lagim card game set with an awesome art design based on Filipino folklore. This game is also available at Kickstarter

    My favorite was that Beckham… at the time he was my favorite player being a giants fan. To top it off I was at the game.. in that corner of the end zone and watched it happen before my eyes. I also collect that card not bc of it’s worth but for the sentimental value.

    Another great show Chris. Love the mix of sports and era's. Great story on the Ripken. I was the same as a kid when I would get an auto, no idea what I said lol

    Love the Ripken story - I can totally remember those butterflies-in-the-stomach moments when you finally meet a player you look up to.

    Man so much great content and a personal connection too. The PSA jump from 2 to 7 blows my mind a little not too mention the sweet pull raw from a collection for that and Gretzky. I think I can relate to the Darrell Green the most, great player that doesn’t get as much attention as he deserves. Thanks and keep the videos coming! I keep sharing your channel with all my card buddies!

    Enjoyed the story of Sandy Koufax graded 2 then resent in for a grade of 7. Could you do a video on how to properly crack open a case and remove the card? I don't have any graded cards as get. Thanks!

    I remember watching that Reggie Miller game live, I'm a Bulls fan, but I was still on my feet for that one.

    Funny story I sold shoes to Reggie Miller. Havana Joe's chuka boots in like 7 colors turned out to be a great person.. Visited me often to get more shoes.. Great video buddy

    Enjoy your videos! I have the beautiful 55 Koufax that psa sent back as a 5. I was very disappointed with that grade. Would I resubmit? I thought it was a 6 or maybe 7.

    Great video. I also really loved Reggie Miller growing up. The clip you showed is exactly what I think about when I think about him. Thank you for the stories.

    Yep. Darrell Green was the best cornerback in the 80s. He was also known as the NFLs "fastest man". They didn't throw the ball as much back then so the position wasn't given as much attention as it is now. That changed with Deon Sanders who made sure everyone knew his name. That Darrell Green rookie card comes from one of the best rookie card classes ever. I love that 1984 Topps set.

    The Sandy Koufax RC is so amazing it makes the rest of the cards invisible. Last night I won an auction for a raw 1960 Roberto Clemente that looks like it should grade at least a 7. I'm debating between PSA although I do like how these cards look on a SGC Tuxedo. Any advice is welcomed.

    • @collectorinvestordealer

      Thats basically a toss up between PSA and SGC. PSA will get you more resale value but will cost a lot more and take a lot longer to get back.
