Mark McGwire 87 topps was the first card for all of us 37-42 year olds out there!! Great video!!

  • @joebobmarley2854

Fascinating. For just little pieces of cardboard it blows me away the value of some of this cardboard. I also was drawn into collecting more than anything by Mark McGwire and I also went to A's games as a youngster starting in 1990. We collected baseball and football cards mainly in my family and same for many friends. As these were the sports we grew up watching. I collected McGwire cards more than anything else and have over 300 different McGwire cards. I'll never forget one birthday in 7th grade a few of my friends pitched in together and bought me the McGwire 85 Topps rookie for I think $15 at the time. That was alot of money in 1995. And that Jerry Rice card showed in this video brings back alot of memories. We also loved to try to complete entire sets of cards. I ended up giving away a bunch of almost completed wax pack era sets after moving around so many times and just got sick of carrying around these binders full of incomplete sets. I took the star cards out beforehand of course. And gave away a lot of commons in that time as well.

Some great advice and amazing backstory. I'm glad Jason reached out and shared his story. Similar to both of you, I grew up in the junk wax era but faded out in the mid 2000s. I started playing poker for a living in 2017, and with more free time on my hands, slowly started getting back into the hobby. I completely agree you can't predict the future or what the market will do in the long run. When I was prepping and studying to quit my full-time job to peruse poker as a career, I read a quote in a poker mental game book that I not only applied to poker but to investing in sports cards, along with many other things in life: "Don't worry about making money. Worry about making the correct decisions and let the money take care of itself" - The Poker Mindset

Great story! Thanks Jason for sharing...and thanks Chris for putting this together you do such a excellent job on these video's. As a side note I want to share. Years ago I got back into collecting cards. I talked to the owner of the only local card shop. He told me don't collect the high grade cards, but he said to focus on mid grade cards so you could get a bigger collection. Anyway, I got the autographed rookie card bug and that is the way I went!!

Great story. I have a very similar one about Tom Brady rookie cards. I was buying them up like crazy the year before he beat Seattle. I found that they were very cheap and had great growth but, also I live in MA and have been a life long Pats fan. The two biggest gains of the bunch were the 2000 Bowman Chrome Refractor which I paid $464 for and the 2000 Bowman Gold #/99 which I paid $500 for and also included the Private Stock Gold. Well I sent off the refractor and it came back a BGS 8.5. So, between the 2 Brady's I have nearly six figures in value on a $1,300 investment including grading fees. Here's hoping he wins #8 this year. GOAT

Pulle a bunch of Lebron rookies. Stop buying cards in 05. Got back into the hobby in 2017. That year I would find so much stuff, but I didn’t open it. I just held on to it. I have 2 2018-2019 fast break boxes that I got for 80 bucks each. Now they are selling for at least 4K each. I have 3 Luka Prizm rcs I pulled one myself and bought the 2 other. I bought one for 9 bucks and the other for 17 bucks. I have so much unopened boxes that are selling for crazy prices. Haven’t sold anything yet. Great story, great video👍

Great video! Started an investment firm in 2010 and started picking up cards over the past few years? Damn, Jason struck gold on two absolutely full on raging bull markets, and on the card front was smart enough to realize who he should be buying (QBs, rookies, champions), and realized the cards were undervalued and diamond handed them to the top (?) of the market. Definitely luck involved (there always is), but lots of skill, too - hat's off!

Great piece Chris.... Hindsight game is a killer! I had a friend in 2012 who wrote an article for a tech magazine...researching BTC. He took a fairly large position at the time. Let's just say he's worth *a lot* now. He told me to buy 5-10K of BTC at the time and I researched it and was intrigued...but still passed. Anyway, you can play this game until the cows go home and drive yourself crazy, that's just how investing works. I agree with him on the 'window' for investing in a player...mid career...and in a sport you really understand. The one thing I'd add about selling/reinvesting...ideally you do that in a tax free method/vehicle, otherwise over time the tax man will kill your profits.

Bad enough that those of us who are basically hobbyists looking to support our interest and possibly make a little $ are now thoroughly squeezed into a corner, but I don't think Joe O and crew fully realized just how many potential submissions just became financially unfeasible... You know those ebay sales where the seller says something asinine like 'PSA 7 - low pop!'... that'll actually kind of mean something a bit different going forward as submissions for an awful lot of cards won't make any financial sense whatsoever... I might just put the cards back in the attic for awhile... very depressing...

Every time I see Jordan rookie I’m sick. I had mine stolen from me years ago. Pretty sure I know who the thief was as well. It was probably a PSA 5 but I only had $50 invested in it. By the time I realized it was missing it was too late to even try to locate it. I also had no proof other than the person stole many other items from me during that same time period.

10 years ago someone broke into my friend's apartment and stole his complete 1986 Fleer basketball set... the cards would have potentially graded at PSA 8 or 9...10s

Another excellent video. Very sound advice too regarding picking up cards of guys not really on most collectors' radar. I use the same approach. A couple year ago I started picking up Freddie Freeman RC's, as he's very consistent and could wind up on the HOF. He picked up the MVP last year, and boom. I think Arenado is a great candidate now. And Paul Goldschmidt too. Avoid the rookie hype, and don't buy the day a guy is voted into the HOF. Keep posting these kick ass videos! Thanks. And thanks to Jason for sharing his story and advice.
