  • Hey guys. It's been a while since we've gone into US & British English comparisons, so welcome to part 4! I think I've compared all there is to be compared, so this might be the last video of the main series, so we end it with a Nathan Sykes special, as well as the last video with Nathan. Hope you guys enjoy it.

      Candy Kpoplover well with the aunt one it depends on where you live in america, dave is from georgia and "ant" is how you pronounce aunt in the south but in other parts of america they say aunt how nathan pronounced it

      In Germany you learn both haha. For real, I learned bin and trash can.
      But finding out they use "Rucksack" (which is the German word for backpack) is a shock to me xD

      Lovely Life But strange kindergarten is also a American word. We started learning British English and later went to American English. After that no teacher cared if you just mixed both xD

    • @suikafan12
      @suikafan12 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I think some of the american pronunciation is very much descended ( lol didn't know any better word for it) from the way German settlers would speak because there were a lot of those. For example the way Americans say 'vase' is way more similar (and also easier for Germans to say) to the German 'Vase' as the British one. Many Germans find it easier to speak AE than British English because it's a lot mor ~germanized~

      Atikah Zameri there was one time I took train from KLIA to KL Central and 3 british aunties sat beside me. And in that KLEX train always got like commercial videos and one of the aunty called out "isnt that Malaysia suppose to use british english? Why it sounds american?" And the other 2 aunties just shake their heads and afterwards I got 3pairs of eyes looking at me like waiting for an answer. I was like 'smileeee...' 😅😅😅 awkward. Dont know what to say.

    In the U.K. We have a lot of American tv so pronunciations sometimes mix and the British accents changes throughout like every area of the uk so this video messed up my brain lol

      @fabulousjenny17 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Trash is like rubbish because their useless/unneeded. A trash can is a can of trash but you don't get those often in the UK so it's called a bin. Bin can be also used as a verb so you can bin something in a bin, lol. I don't get calling biscuits cookies though, like digestive cookie? Rich tea cookie?? I only say chocolate chip cookie.

    There's too many British regional accents for this to be completely accurate - might be a good idea to do a video with like a north British accent to see how it compares to the standard "queens English" that you're used to hearing. Good video though!

      Same! At school I learned British English all my life and I still ended up with an American accent, except for some words (I can never say “daughter” the “American way”) LOL I don’t know why!!! I guess it’s because I watched a lot of American TV/movies growing up.

      If you use your non-native language daily, it's pretty easy to switch, though. I sometimes prefer to reply people in English inadvertently, whereas my native language isn't English. The more practice you do, the more speed. That's the key, I think

    AFAIK, the British "rucksack" comes from the German word "Rucksack". It consists of "Ruck-", probably short for "Rücken", and "Sack". Which would translate to "back bag" or "back sack".
    Fun Fact: The Japanese "Ryukkuzakku" also comes from the German word.
