This comment will probably get lost, but I kinda want to say it anyway.
Because I had ear infections as a child, I didn't hear words very much. Yet, somehow, I learned how to read very early.
In fact, I still have higher than normal levels of mishearing people than most. So I've always focused more on text than speech
I guess sort of my "point" is don't neglect writing either, because it too has an important role

I don't think Dave and the Core Sound CEO are saying to neglect writing. The Korean school system neglects listening/speaking and only focuses on reading/writing. Thus, Koreans can perform better on exams, like the SAT, than native English speakers but they cannot speak it at all. These two are trying to bring into the light for their Korean audience that learning a language should not be solely reading/writing but should also be integrated with listening/speaking.

    • @romajimamulo
      @romajimamulo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

This is such an informative and fun way to learn English!
'Shadowing' or mimicking is how I learned English back when I was a kid. I watched lots of animated movies (VHS tapes, yeah yeah, I'm old 😜) and series ,mostly Disney. The movies have English subtitles in it as those tapes were from South Korea. However, that time when I was a kid my accent wasn't good though my English was decent.
One thing I've found helpful to me (as an adult) in learning intonation and diction was through watching movies or documentaries, repeating the words and lines right after the character delivers them. And I also made sure to record my voice so that I can compare them with the video. I also bought SAT reviewer books not because I need to take the test but to improve my reading comprehension. And of course, read lots and lots of books ranging from children's books (loved Dr. Seuss) to novels like Stephen King's.
The most important thing is to never stop learning and use the language every opportunity you get if you're not living in an English speaking country.
Currently I'm learning Japanese and I'm into Japanese Tutorials done by native Japanese people, without any English subtitles at all.

  • @jordanh8086

That’s how I learned Korean, it helps because when you talk to actual native Koreans, then you understand what they say easily because you don’t solely learn Hangul you hear their intonations and how they pronounce which helps you form an understanding.
For those trying to learn Korean, YOU GOT THIS! I know it’s hard! But keep going!

wow this was really fun! I’m not trying to humble brag but English is only my third language and I learnt it mostly by myself through reading manga, listening to interviews, movies and whatnot because I was picked on by my friends for being the only one who doesn’t speak it...and so I guess I learnt the intonation and this ‘shadowing’ thing unintentionally. I’m always getting asked why I have such a distinctive American accent and speak like a native when I dropped English classes after two years and I couldn’t say anything because I didn’t know either... this video made me realize that it was because I watched those interviews and movies. mind=blown. thank you Dave for helping me realize I actually did something good once lol

This was exactly how I learned Japanese! As a huge anime and J-Movie fan, I started learning how to speak by shadowing phrases. Then later on when I was much older, I picked up reading and writing. By that time, it was far easier for me to learn because it was just connecting the dots to what i'm saying to what I'm reading/writing. I'm so glad that you did this video because it'll help more people to go into the languages they love with resources they already have!

Natural, we need to learn and feel the environment when we learn. I’m so curious really, why most of education programs starts with writing and reading. That’s really troublesome after when you gotta speak. I was educated all of them at once and didn’t have many problems but after watching movies and etc in English, I learned many things rather than before. Then I also started to read different articles, was looking and listening to the lyrics of music. That was really helpful. I’m glad that schools are now trying to fix that problem. At least I know that many schools in my country are changing it which is why I’m a bit happier. Lately I’ve been into Korean, I guess I’ll use same techniques to learn at least speaking and texting

So true, when I went to Korea I found it really easy to talk Korean even though I've never properly learned how to speak it but I have been watching Korean variety shows for 5 years now, who would've known it was so easy to pick up a skill like this.

I learned almost all my korean by watching videos after getting into kpop~ They are so right, it's much easier to learn a language by consistent EXPOSURE to natural speech in natural situations rather than examples in textbooks. If you can't study abroad or talk to native speakers directly, watch dramas and movies! and youtube videos for that matter!

This is why language classes (like Spanish, French, German, etc) in the US (or at least where I live) focus so much on speaking and expressing yourself as if you were a native speaker.

This goes to show how difficult it is to correctly imitate the sound of a foreign language when you've grown to adulthood speaking a non-English (especially non-European) native language. Awesome job, Dave!

I can just say this now, I've watched a lot of Asian dramas lately, mainly boys love or bromance, but I do want to learn the languages of said dramas. There's one Korean movie that I absolutely love, even though it's extremely dark when it comes to the topic, but I want to learn the language without English subtitles. It sucks for me because English is the only language I know currently and it makes me feel like an absolute idiot when it comes to different languages.
I appreciate the pointers that Shin WangGuk had given us with watching movies, dramas, etc for the intonition instead of just the reading and writing aspect. He's truly an amazing guy for it. And for Dave to be able to have Shin WangGuk on his youtube channel, it amazes me to no end. Thank you to both Dave and Shin WangGuk for your information regarding this topic.
Also, Jaein and Erina is extremely adorable with their pronunciations of English words. I can't deal with their cuteness. Literal cuteness overload.

Another way learn english are from music.
    1. Choose ur favorite english song
    2. Sing it while watch the lyric
    3. Sing it without lyric
    4. While sing it try write
    5. Then translate it to ur own language
Its good for listen, spell n writing ability.
    It just my opinion tho.

It’s really dumb to thank you for this video, but I absolutely love it. My major is Japanese, and I am struggling with the transition to speaking, even after 3 years. I will start studying Korean this winter and my goal is to do it in a more natural way. So thank you! Learning a language should be natural, not from a textbook!

I'm not sure how you normally learn, but if you have a native speaker around try to talk with them as often as possible. Watch a lot of English shows and listen to songs in English, then try to repeat what you hear. Of course, keep studying from books, but doing those things will help you sound natural.

Depends on when you start. You can learn more in 3 or 4 years starting from age 7 than you can in 10 years starting in university. Your brain just absorbs the language easier when you're younger.
Based on what I've read about both education systems, I don't think Erina started learning English seriously until probably year 7, while Jaein likely started in year 3. That's why she's a bit stronger at it than Erina.

Actually I learned english from listening songs and repeating what it says ^^ And at school, even though that I'm leaving in Mexico where we all speak Spanish, there's a Bachelor where all classes are in English, so my environment changed and I learned a lot from my friends who have a native intonation ^^ i can't say that my English is perfect, but is getting a lot better 💛

I also learned english just by watching english cartoons ever since I was young, and by just imitating them, and trying to apply it in my daily life, I learned on my own.
In some countries they translate and dub the cartoons into their own languages so the kids barely get exposed to english

Girls don’t be shy~! We all love you so much (and we’re willing to answer any English questions you have, that’s in our knowledge.) Also! Dave’s method of learning is actually really good to use! I’ve watched a lot of anime and Japanese TV shows in middle school (shuffled my focus to Korean now lmaO) and I learned to sound fluent in a matter of time! (I was able to construct basic sentences and sing anime openings and I sounded like a natural according to my friends and family) Using music is also good too! It’s why I’ve been listening to Kpop so much and I can understand a little without having to look at lyrics, etc.

This is a very good way to learn languages!! I'm Brazilian and I learned English by the app Duolingo and then started to watch videos of native speakers, in that way you can learn just like a baby, naturally :)
If you can't be with them (people who are native speakers of the language you're learning), talking to them... Then, you can just watch them, listening, and chatting online! :D
