I love how Patrick answers all his questions without playing around as he usually does. He knows these are Steiners last moments, every second counts and is irreplaceable for someone about to die.
This was by far the most powerful moment in the series. Congratulations to everyone involved. The scene was so small, so quiet, so moving. It speaks to everyone who has experienced the fading health of someone close. There, not there.
it's amazing to see that everybody (including me) I've seen on the Internet agree that this scene got the most powerful impact. at least we all got something in common
And don't forget the courage to display this event on national television in a country where euthanasia is a great taboo and against the law. More doctors need to speak out about this. People dying a slow and agonizing death in a time where it is backward and immoral to allow it, while doctors knowingly withhold a pain-relieved passing, is absurd. The medical community needs to convince those in power to allow this so that the final hours or even months of this kind of suffering can be prevented. I am proud to say I am Dutch and my government has been sufficiently wise to allow the medical community to be heard and apply their knowledge.
I think what changed Patrick's mind about being a witness was how the doctor apologized about it being an imposition. The man was going to die, yet he still considered how it would affect Jane. How could Patrick refuse a man with such courage?
over 10yrs later and this legitimately still makes me tear up. They did a fantastic job with this scene. A nice subtle tone and then silence as Steiner passes away and Jane removes his tea cup.
I didn't really remember Steiner much from before, but they made him so lovable in this episode. The mending the fences, and Steiner going from his dislike of Jane's antics, to almost a childlike wonder that he did magic, and Jane using his antics instead to distract Steiner and give him some joy before his passing. This made me cry, this is what storytelling is about

This is perhaps the saddest and most touching scene of the series, as others have said. One of the less fun lessons you learn as you get older is the realization that while death is inevitable, dignity in death has no such guarantee. I loved that Dr. Steiner, so often the victim of Patrick's irreverent genius, was able to achieve some peace at the end of his journey due to those same gifts. It was one of the few times I genuinely liked Patrick on the show.

This proves Patrick Jane is a good man. He could’ve just fooled around but he didn’t, he didn’t waste Steiner’s time, he sat down with him and comforted him in his last moments.

i just realized... the music in the end kind of mimics a beating heart, and when Steiner stopped moving and Jane took away the cup, the beat (pun lol) stopped, mimicking Steiner's heart that just stopped...

The only scene I had more of an emotional reaction to was the ending scene in "Charlotte" when he knowingly drinks belladonna again to try to see his daughter. It's just him making tea with a very moving musical motif over it. Haunting. This was a close second.

Seeing Patrick admit that he had been in a metal ward effected affected me just as much. He says, "There is no shame in having a mental breakdown, but I admit, I'm ashamed of it." It's not just the stigma of having a breakdown, it is taking responsibility for what led to it. That hurts more if you feel your actions lead to the harm of those you love.
I remember this scene well. It struck something in me that I recall looking away from the screen while it played. "It's there and now it's gone" followed by silence. I finally saw the scene that belonged to these words and gosh is it heart wrenching.

I know it's just a movie. But this scene touched me very much in my heart and soul. I had goose bumps and tears. In the end, life is about humanity. Being there for someone. Love, respect and appreciation. These are values that we need so much in our time. Then the world would be a very different place today.
I cried. Hard. I imagined being Steiner, then imagined being Jane. Both are such horrible positions to be in. Steiner was not alone in the end. Jane was probably the best person to be with at that moment. Incredibly sad and hard to watch but what an acting. I still have a clump in my throat.

I don't understand why this show never won an Emmy! It was one of the best shows ever on TV and the fans all know it. It should have won Emmys every year it was on, and Golden Globes and best actor, actress, supporting actors and actresses! Best writing and directing! I only recently discovered it and I'm on my 3rd time watching through the entire 7 years. Wish it had gone at least one more year.

I see the Thomas' scene touted as Best scene of The Mentalist by YT crowd. It is a wonderful scene no doubts. But for me this is the best scene of the show so far (I've completed 4 seasons so far)... Suicide is often demonized but I think it should be part of fundamental right.

That series aged well. I just saw that episode and I am crying. I am much older now, alone and lost people. That silence at the end is so loud
