The first time I heard Becca Stevens was a tape (I'm old enough to call it a tape) of her doing harmonies with quarter tones. I can't tell you what that does to the brain.
Becca has such a unique and powerful stage presence. The most moving concert I have ever attended was a show of hers, held in a tiny apartment in Amsterdam. So giving, so loving toward her audience with her music and delivery...this video is yet another wonderful example
I simply can't fathom the ease with which they project these most heavenly sounds, seemly so unconcerned with what the other's doing. Their voices melt like two old souls, who's never a day been out of love with each other.
Boy, am I glad to have found you two on here, there is an authentic talent, a love of life, a love of music, a love of sharing great things, an accessible and logical goodness, a poetically disarming surprise, and I wish you both all the very best of EVERYTHING. Thanks.
i ended up here by complete accident, i should say i was completely oblivious to whats about to ccure, definitely not ready .... i didn't move an atom for 6 minutes , this performance hit me like thunder yet its as mellow as a bird's song..... :X
@Jacob Collier: Can't you make a kind of karaoke version? You playing/singing your part? Then I can try to play the guitar and sing (just for my own fun :-)). That would be great! Love the way you guys arranged this song. Becca, beautiful voice!
The song can be broken down simply by reducing the chord progression by taking out the passing tones. | Eb | C- | Ab | Bb :|| If look at it numerically it's this: | I | vi | IV | V :|| What happening at the moments you mentioned could be seen as a chord substitution for the vi chord or the C-. However I see it as using a couple of the many paths from the I chord to the IV chord or Eb to the Ab.
Wow, thanks Jamar. Yes now you've written it out I can hear the G7 which replaces the Bb as being the dominant of the following chord (Cm).. I guess it's quite a common chord substitution - not 'unfamiliar' sounding at all. It sounds really nice here because the song is, on the whole, quite simple and diatonic.. I love the little detour it takes for these 4 bars
just wanted to observe that when becca stevens was tuning 3rd and 4th strings on guitar ( d-g) jacob plays a C major , like it was II V I . i know , probably it's a stupid argument , but it makes me think a lot .
I guess it's very processor intensive. Whatever Jacob is singing is input into the instrument, which then has to interpret the pitches he is singing. Then to produce each new tone, the processor has to split the signal into thousands of continuous samples, and pitch shift the steady stream of samples to the note being played. Not just once but up to 12 times. Easy to do in the studio, but live: wow.
Jacob sometimes refers to it as his Harmonizer. I can't confirm but I would guess that it's similar to a plug in called Prismizer. You can hear it on Bon Iver's latest record.
It’s “Amen”, and then I’m pretty sure Jacob sings “Amen” back to be fun (and with intentionally grand and improvised flourish), which is why Becca starts laughing. I’m not religious at all, but if anything inspires a feeling of the divine and warrants an “Amen” it would be these two (particularly together!)
These two are really accomplished musicains, composers and especially, in the case of Jacob Collier, arrangers. I'm just wondering why they don't pick a little stronger material. Minus the lyrics this is four bars surrounded by maybe 20 repeat signs. It starts out being really inspiriational, but after the 15th repeat, it begins to feel like the dripping water torture. With all the great tunes in the world, why pick this?
If you listen to the whole concert, you'll hear them say that they haven't played together that much yet. That results in a few blemishes and perhaps also forced them to play less interesting material. Hopefully we'll hear some cool stuff from them in the future, because I think they sound great together.
a year late... but sometimes, its the simplest tunes that tell the deepest stories. Not everything is always about form and structure. Sometimes, its just the feeling that four or five simple chords played over and over can evoke.
sorry, but this was the most boring concert i heard at the moers festival 2016. it's an avantgarde festival and not one for jazzed up popmusic, pretty lame and uninspired stuff he dropped there, he can do better i think.
Wow, she's got a lovely voice.
What a great duet, I imagine the audience are just floating with their eyes closed.
Whatever Jacob plays from 3:48 to 4:00 is just mindblowing. The expression in that, it's massive.
One of Sam Beam’s most beautiful songs. A very lovely cover!

do you have a name or a link on that?
Martí Solé
Unfortunately not. A great friend, former teacher, and musician, Eric Doney, had it. This was 2009.
How!?
Damn. That would be dope to hear... Do you think Eric Doney still has access to it and would be willing to share?
This is worship music ; healing music.... angel music. Thank God for this two blessed musicians

Andrew Weitz It was beautiful!
I think when Jacob shows restraint and maturity like he does in this preformance, he’s capable of some really really historic things.
Ok man
what a voice!! why is she not way way more famous?
I simply can't fathom the ease with which they project these most heavenly sounds, seemly so unconcerned with what the other's doing. Their voices melt like two old souls, who's never a day been out of love with each other.
This song is my place of peace. Becca's voice is angelic. The deceptively simple song is a balm for difficult times.
Jacob is absolutely amazing...but Becca Stevens is a force to be reckoned with!
Two favorite artists together!
I think they are both infinitely more powerful together - there is a profound connection there.
The smooth tones and melody of their voice makes me float away to a place of peace and beauty
So beautiful 😢
Like a sparkling diamond resting on a velvety pillow.
To have the presence, like the stage is your own home. That is talent! Both of you!
Love both of these people to bits and pieces.
💗🕊💓💞🎶🥰🎶😍🎶🌱🌍🌌💗
This may be the most beautiful and tender song I've ever heard. Angelic is Becca and Jacob personified.
The guy who got up at 00:39 is about regret going for a piss 😂

5:30-32. What music is all about: Speaking out, having someone hear you, and FEEL them acknowledge that what you said moved them. 🎙🎼🎵🎶
Great song. Great cover
Too good for words !
You both are limitless !!!
Bravo !!!
Your big fan , Marc
Beautiful duet. So soothing. Jacob reminds me of tv character John Boy from the tv series The Waltons.
such an amazing song! Jacob added another dimension into such a beautiful piece

Wow! Two of my favorite musicians ever. Incredible!
That was gorgeous wow
Beautiful. Has a religious/church feel with that amazing choir. Almost expected a full pipe organ in there somewhere!
Amazing!
My heart just melts every time I see them perform together -- what a gem of a performance❤
The intro is armony magic.
4:58 is the moment i just melt away.
Excellent -- en tous points !!!
BEAUTIFUL !!! It's all I can say !!!
3:51 - 3:54 omg that progression
une voix magique
Absolutely spellbinding. I think I like this better than the original.
Beyond amazing.
These 2 have good chemistry...
Understatement of the decade!

Oh boy!
Beautiful X
A mantra...
Can someone explain what happens at 3:45 to 4:05 ? It's the only time the chord sequence is changed I think.. is it harmonic substitution?
The song can be broken down simply by reducing the chord progression by taking out the passing tones.
| Eb | C- | Ab | Bb :||

| I | vi | IV | V :||

Instead of:
| Eb Bb/D C- G | Ab Bb :||
He's playing (simplified):
| Eb G7 C- Eb7/Bb | Ab Bb :||
and
| C- G7/B Eb7/Bb Eb/G | Ab Bb :||

When’s the wedding?
Evan Hosley RIGHT!!!
They low key perfect
the way she looks and smiles at Jacob during the "As" recording - they are real soul mates - :)
+sean scott
She looks at him as if She loves him. In that video THEY should be a couple. Their children would be incredibly talent musicians One day.
It would be funny if their kid grows up to be a lawyer or accountant or something like that.

I guess everyone needs this 2:40 button ;)
Thank you comrade o7
is it just me or did becca think they were gonna finish at 5:40
yeah I thought that too - I think Jacob was being naughty and just kept it going!
Okay...back again. :56...he scrunched his face up because he KNEW it would rip through us, and leave an insatiable longing for it...
Beatiyoufuuul : ) ……: )
1:17 lol
Hello! Could someone please explain to me how this weird choir keyboard thing Jacob's playing on works? Cheers!
The instrument is one of a kind, co-created with an expert at MIT. It's capable of reproducing 12 vocal tomes.
+Matthew Taylor isnt it like polyphonic autotune? :p
Jacob sometimes refers to it as his Harmonizer. I can't confirm but I would guess that it's similar to a plug in called Prismizer. You can hear it on Bon Iver's latest record.
but it shouldn't have to sound wrong as long as the whole song is out of tune right?
What gets yelled at 1:02?
Amen
Bebopopotamus Amen
I heard "playback!" :D
It’s “Amen”, and then I’m pretty sure Jacob sings “Amen” back to be fun (and with intentionally grand and improvised flourish), which is why Becca starts laughing. I’m not religious at all, but if anything inspires a feeling of the divine and warrants an “Amen” it would be these two (particularly together!)
@@shoveitupyourtube I hear 'ain't bad'
replay, replay, replay, replay...
my favourite duo ... go guys go and make the music till you can hold the tone...it is blessing
heartbreaking
It's a little bit similar to main theme from Heroes V: Tribes of the East ;-)
4:51 another lol
lol
I can see this is gonna be a problem for me. :56. That chord...6 times...THEN repeat entire video...embarrassingly unmentionable times...🙋♀️🤷♀️🤦♀️
Ear candy.
SHOW ME WHAT YOU GOT!
hahaha oh man I love this comment!
No one loves Jacob more than him.
where are you even getting that from?

Art Edwards I like it that way. It is almost like a repetitive prayer with some minor shifts in it.
a year late... but sometimes, its the simplest tunes that tell the deepest stories. Not everything is always about form and structure. Sometimes, its just the feeling that four or five simple chords played over and over can evoke.
Filip Wikman and we were right!! BATHTUB
Who are you to police their source material?
haha she's tuning while he's singing
No offence to the dude, he does his thing and is special, but I would love to hear this song only by Becca
sorry, but this was the most boring concert i heard at the moers festival 2016. it's an avantgarde festival and not one for jazzed up popmusic, pretty lame and uninspired stuff he dropped there, he can do better i think.
Wow ; a few months away from hearing Jacob; sorry to see his talent SO diluted by banal melody and harmony: must be love.
some of the most beautiful songs are simple; moreover she's married and he is probably not exactly hetero, but nice projecting duder
i think Jacob makes this song worse.
