You can really tell the difference between pop stars and those that really took the time to study their craft before going on the world stage. Nothing wrong with either, but it's so refreshing to see the latter in a world dominated with the former.
My favorite part is when at 3:45 when he makes a conscious decision to play something different than where his hands were going to decide to play at that instant. That is the beauty of Jazz.
I think he was about to make a mistake and he corrected it in his mind while playing in front of a crowd which is even more impressive

That moment at 3m47s is striking: Batiste consciously calculating which voicing he was going to perform next. That's versatility and virtuosity, to be able to play any musical color you wish to, at any time, giving the music a breathing, quality.

He truly is one of those "light ppl" like Prince, Karen Carpenter, Brian Wilson, Donny Hathaway, Aretha, Jiminy, SRV, Whitney, etc. Such lights were commonly snuffed out bc they couldn't create freely in the 50s-60s, especially, so they had to go early...imo anyway.c
