Gary Louris has a predilection for beautiful melancholia, exorcising his angst through reflective, self analytical lyrics, invariably offset by subtle and infectious melodies. I have always been predisposed to revel and delight in this particular form of expression of the Human psyche. Originally, The Jayhawks were heralded as champions and purveyors of a style of country rock originated by Gram Parsons, and whilst Mark Olsen dominated the sound and lyrical content of the bands output, the similarities were undeniable. With the departure of Mark Olsen, the general consensus amongst critics and fans alike, was that the Captain had scuttled the ship whilst riding a creative wave. Mercifully for those hungry for, and appreciative of intelligent music, Gary Louris declined to abandon the good ship 'The Jayhawks', and accompanied by his talented and stalwart crew, salvaged and refitted the vessel, setting sail for challenging and uncharted waters. Sound of Lies, the initial port of call, was a stunning achievement, a fully fledged resurrection, and pointed to a very different influence, in that the dark mood and lyrical content was redolent of another pathfinder of country rock - perhaps the true originator - Gene Clark. I would recommend anyone who has treasured and enjoyed The Jayhawks output post Olsen, to investigate the wonderful Gene Clark anthology, Flying High. My only surprise is that neither Gary nor The Jayhawks have contemplated or been persuaded to cover such classic Gene Clark songs as, She Darked The Sun, Set You Free This Time, Something's Wrong, One In A Hundred, Polly, or Past Addresses.
I love that once or twice a year this song pops up in my feed. I'll watch it a couple dozen times, learn to play it on guitar, and then a few weeks later, I'll forget about it and then a while later, it pops up on my feed, I grab my guitar, rinse and repeat...
Honestly, one of my favorite live recordings of the Jayhawks. I've watched so many, and the quality here is insane: there's no keys, they're literally under a tree in a field, but Karen's vocals sound amazing, they're incredibly tight, and the recording is great!
Just discovered it a cii I ole weeks ago and I agree. Karen’s vocals are great, but I like the fact that there are 4 singers and you can hear all 4 parts and they’re all in tune. Hard to do live.
music isnt a competition.. each band or artist has a gift, comparing Wilco to the Jayhawks is meaningless. enjoy both for the best songs you can enjoy in their music.. the world of music is not american idol. there is no winner, just expressions in the moment
@@KawasakiZ1Guy I can see why. He could see the talent and ... my Ray Davies story. Waterloo Sunset was high in the charts when I had first date with my now wife of 54 years. @@peebeedee6757 very cool! Love the Kinks and always thought the great Minneapolis bands like Husker Du, The Replacements and Jayhawks were heavily influenced by them.
this is talent there are songs that try to make you feel something, there are songs you just dont get for whatever reason, usually the music overwhelms the message, and then there is this,, a song you feel deeply. to try to intellectalize it, does not do it justice. it just has something that hits the heart, and its beautiful. this and hearing Blue in a supermarket in Baltimore
Could not agree more. Karen is that vital ingredient in the recipe that without her contribution, would render the dish decidedly bland. P.S. Correction. They were never bland. Olsen's and Louris's vocals were a breath of fresh air in the arid late 80s and early 90s - but Karen's harmonies subtly propelled the Jay Hawks to another Realm.
Great tune, great band and a fitting setting. It maybe blasphemy, but I like more of the non - Olson tunes. Maybe that's because there are just more...
I disagree. They’re really two different bands. Louris writes more pop songish. The twangy songs from the Blue Earth and Hollywood Town Hall are fantastic. Still great harmonies, but really different genres.
Wow. One commenter spoke of blasphemy. Another... grief. So, let me take a swing.... Right at 2:50 somebody needs to stomp on a Fuzz pedal, the drums need to crash bigtime, and just scream out for 90 more seconds: IS THERE SOMETHING I SHOULD FUCKING SAY????!!!!
They should be playing packed stadiums but here they are sounding incredible as usual. I guess it's kind of a good thing that the Jayhawks didn't hit the bigtime because that might have destroyed them and I like having a favorite band that almost nobody knows

Yeah. Me too.
Love those red strings!
I was just thinking that, too….👍
Real musicians playing real music live. These guys are fabulous. Absolutely terrific song!
One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard.
I keep coming back here.

her voice blends his into something really beautiful, goes straight to my heart and makes me cry, every time I listen to this song.
This song's never been better than this recording. The sound is fuc..great!!! And the setting under the tree...Love it!
The more I hear it, the more I like this song! Beautiful.
Incredible track. So good live.
Gary, you are a jewel. I'll listen to everything you write until the end.
Love the little glance and smile between Gary and Karen around the 2:18 mark....all The Jayhawks have sublime vocal abilities damn!!
What a great unique voice pulse multi harmony.
The Jayhawks even sound great in a field under a tree.
In a box, with a fox. In a house, with a mouse.
Especially...
Just magnificent. 😊
All time favourite !!! Can't do a better youtube -vid !!! Please never delete it !!! Great work !!!!
For reasons I don't understand, this song taps into a deep grief in me.
Get in line
Yep. I hear regret. He's asking to be stopped before he walks away. Wants to know if there is anything he can do. There probably isn't.

Better than the recorded track. I've just got to known the Jayhawks, they just haven't been promoted in the UK but they are so good. So good.
I believe Ray Davies picked them to be his backing band for his Americana work. That’s a high tribute!

KUTX, I see you gave me a heart but I need to big you up again. This recording is of the highest quality and thank you for it.
I would recommend listening to all of their albums they are utterly amazing

Such a great band.
One of my favorite TH-cam videos
Always loved this song. From Christchurch, New Zealand.
The quality of this recording is insane!
Agreed...INSANE! Blew me away...
It's great beyond belief.
Folks, there was invariably post-production work done on it, but it does sound beautiful..
They are so tight. Absolutely love this. Thank you. ☺
Yep!!
Love the Jayhawks!
A wonderful song and performance. Beautiful.
This performance is perfect.
LOVE!!!! tears of emotion in my eyes xxxxx
Love the Jayhawks. Beautiful
Simple, sublime.
How is this from 6 years ago. Thank you Gary louris. Your sly smile after “in the end, there’s no way in redemption” is just so perfect.
My favorite song of the year!!
yep i was sold from the start. absolutey brilliant.
Awesome, have to have it at least once a week, lol❤️
Jayhawks are new to me...but this is excellent! Stumbled on to this video somehow and loved it!
Gary, you have said it all. Thank you my friend

Fascinating....thx youtube !!! Love music...love that vid !!!! PERFECT !!! Great job !!!
Simply great music. Gary is superb but Karen's harmonies make it beautiful.
Above all, The Jayhawks are a BAND.
This is a real class act.
I think it’s actually all four blending perfectly.

Very true, but Tim & Kraig each add their own spice.
Some songs are soooo perfect! This is one of them! Beautiful!!!!!
There are many studio albums that don't sound this good.
They know how good this is. Those little smiles between them say it all. ☺
Amazing and sublime!
this is music!!!
EXACTLY!!!
Proper musicians.
Great song and album.
So good live...
Beautiful!
lov this band,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,thanx,,,,,,,,,,,,,z
great band!
sooooooo good, always--what a band
Love💕 As good as ever! I especially like this one.
Yes, I thought that it might be a letdown without Karen actually playing keyboards on this version, but NOPE, STILL phenomenal!!
It sounds so great.
Great track!!👍
Absolutely astounding!
GREAT SONG
Karen is my spirit animal.
Very nice setting.
Top draw loved it !!!!

Beautiful Harmonies
Shear class!!!
If there is a such thing as "Too Awesome", then this is it. You understand?
Fantásticos!!!
..the JAY effing HAWKS.....

Amazing
Just discovered this and it's amazing. Frontman Gary said that drummer Tim actually had a better voice than him. And of course, there is Karen.
They will be in concert near, but I´m not sure my heart will stand listening to this song, maybe I´m not going
Catch me quick before I walk away...
Very good stuff❤❤❤🎵🎵🎵
Dude's strings are red...that is so 80s metal!
wow!
Wowsers and Guffaws and Gnashing of teeth! I love the Jayhawks. These Jayhawks anyway.
way too short........ such a great tune--should be 4:47
Great tune, great band and a fitting setting. It maybe blasphemy, but I like more of the non - Olson tunes. Maybe that's because there are just more...
not blasphemy at all. Louris is the talent. Not olson

@@robertbertelsen8944 I can respect that. I honestly love both
The Hawks are far better than the guys who invented this sound in the mid to late '60's. An American treasure.
Yes… that is dim lights thick smoke
are his shoes ok Kyle j.
Anyone know where this is? It looks like Riverdale Park in Toronto where I used to take my work break naps
Austin Tx. SXSW maybe.
Who's the lead guitarist?
Never knew Gerard Butler played guitar for The Jayhawks! 😂
Wow.
