- Richard Diebenkorn has been a favourite of mine since my early teens, although I've been able to see only a couple of his paintings in real life up til now, as his work hasn't been widely collected in Europe, as far as I know. By a strange coincidence though, one my of my teachers while I was studying art in Florence, Italy, a few years later, told me in passing she'd been his pupil back in the 70's!
Many thanks to Max @MaxRidgway & Cheryl @redhairedstepchild for the wonderful music!
From Max's channel:
"Richard Diebenkorn was an American painter and printmaker. His early work is associated with abstract expressionism and the Bay Area Figurative Movement of the 1950s and 1960s. In the late 1960s he began an extensive series of geometric abstract paintings. Known as the Ocean Park paintings, these paintings were instrumental to his achievement of worldwide acclaim. Art critic Michael Kimmelman described Diebenkorn as "one of the premier American painters of the postwar era, whose deeply lyrical abstractions evoked the shimmering light and wide-open spaces of California, where he spent virtually his entire life." "
Cheryl Pyle (flute)
Max Ridgway (bass, guitar)
Urbuli Baba (drums)
Recorded in Alva, New York, USA, and Agen, France. (Special thanks to Roland for recording the drums). September 2024.
One of my favorite artists also. His canvases display the wonderful intersect between (mostly aerial) landscapes and abstract patterns. A master of the form. 1:30 is a great example.
thank you! Yes, I'm always a bit surprised (not to say dismayed) when some people confess to preferring Wayne Thiebaud, who also painted some similarly inspired landscapes.. I believe Diebenkorn is quite a cut above him... The painting you mentioned is one of my favourites too!
Music & art goes together like cheese & good wine…splendid music & story…small world.
Yes, well put, my friend! have a great week, mera dost!
excellent piece of music to wake up to.I love Diebenkorn's art.
Thank you so much, Scott! :D
I love hearing you three playing together.
Thank you, Patrick! Hope we'll be able to play live at some point!
I'm loving the patience of this trio. :)
thank you!! feels nice to play some "gentle" free jazz too, once in a while! 😅
Really enjoying listening to this. Super Richard Diebenkorn art too. 👏👏👍👍
Thanks a lot! glad you like his work too!
Always enjoy the tribute to an artist series, the music and visuals compliment each other so well every time!!
As always, a good piece of music from you guys.
Agree with that.
Thanks so much, my friend!!

Enjoyable artpiece
Thank you, LP! :D
I love that this is a tribute to an artist.. I enjoy the mix of the two..
thanks buddy! I've been a fan of Diebenkorn's for quite some time!
Hi UB, I'm repeating myself, but your music reminds me so much of the kind of incidental music used on some of the more daring films of the 1960s. Great memories!! Also wonderful to be introduced to new visual artists!! Studied in Florence - I'm turning greener and greener!!!!
Thank you so much, my friend! I spent four (blissful) years in Florence, studying painting at the Florence Academy of Art and doing the rounds of every jazz club in towns at night, lol! Haven't been able to go back there in ten years but Roland and I are planning to go on tour there next year, I can't wait! :D
@@urbulibaba Do you paint??? How was Florence for jazz clubs???? Can you still turn out a magnificent pizza????
Very enjoyable art and music Urbuli!👏👏👏
Mange Takk, Tomas! :D
You are most welcome!
Beautiful sounds and images for my morning cuppa! There's such a lightness of touch to the playing here... wonderful stuff!
Thank you, Paul! The very fact that you listen to free jazz whilst enjoying a matutinal cup of tea makes me ineffably happy for some reason! :D
@@urbulibaba Haha!!! It made me very happy too ;)
more master works my friends! wonderful piece.
Thank you, James!
Your music always tells a wonderful story, fantastic piece Urbuli 🙂
Thank you so much, Maydon, sorry for the late reply, im just back home after two weeks...
toujours aussi fluide et inspirée ! bravo !
Merci ! Il faut aussi dire que l'ingé son était au top !
I liked it very much, the pictures are also great, a feast for the eyes And ears :)
Thanks a lot, man!
Interesting, I have a friend who was extremely influenced by Diebenkorn, and I saw a retrospective of Diebenkorn in Portland, Or, that was very comprehensive. A great combo of sounds and images here.
Thanks, Roger, I don't quite know how well-known he is in the US these days, I got the impression he's often been regarded as a second-rate abstract expressionist for some strange reason, whereas I've always regarded him as one of the best American artists from the 20th century! and he's virtually unknown in France to this day...
Bella bella bella... Noi, saremo un po' più aggressivi, vero?😅
Eccome! Quando avremo finito, la Sicilia si sarà trasformata in vulcano!! 🌋🌋
Superb!
Thank you! I hope you're well & will upload some more music soon!
This is a great piece. I like the artwork.
thanks! glad you're back, mate! :D
Hello again 🙂 I loved this! I am taking my breakfast and hmmm.. this "free" music was refreshing my brain before starting to work 😀 Listen: next week is another Festival, wanna join? All the best, Tubster
thanks a bunch, buddy! will check out your new stuff very soon, now that im back!
Shimbyala Mayo adhbuta 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
ehhhhh thale sari unta, dhanu? 😂
The art work is incredible, as is the music. For some reason, I feel your drums pop out a bit more in the mix, and I really enjoy hearing you play more "up close." It's very maximal in terms of texture and time!
Thanks, Karl! I'm glad you noticed! I was able to take some time off during a session at Roland's to record the drums for this piece last weekend, and he has a much better recording set-up (and mics) than me, hence the crisp audio for once!
Fratello!
