- HARROGATE PARISH #50: BOROUGHBRIDGE
Boroughbridge - “Fort Bridge”
Next up in the Harrogate series we have Boroughbridge - the small town that we’ve been talking so much about over the past few episodes. Take everything you already know about the town from those videos and keep it handy in your mind, because at various points throughout this video we will be referencing some bits.
Borougbridge was an important staging post on the Great North Road. Although it’s the main settlement with the parish of the same name, Boroughbridge’s historical importance is second to the village just East of the town. That would be Aldborough - a principal settlement during the Roman period, once known as Isurium Brigantum.
There’s a lot here, so lets get cracking

Watching.
hey keep this going this was fun to listen to and peek a glance at while working
You're getting closer to where my Mum comes from now Andy, slightly further north around Saltburn-by-the-Sea, and you're there. I don't know Boroughbridge, but we've driven passed it numerous times when visiting family or graves in the Redcar area. I look forward to when you cover these places, especially Lingdale, as my Mum comes from there.
You know me, if its a parish it's a video (eventually)
Aldborough used to be lovely. On the edge of the village green, it had a post office in one half of a Georgian house. Run by Mrs Mudd, her family made butter, in the past, and won awards for their butter flowers. See the Nidderdale museum for photos.
Aldborough still IS lovely isn't it?
@TheVillageIdiot Since the post office closed, it's become yet another 'dead' or commuter village. Looks beautiful but you have to leave to shop, use amenities or socialise.
The opening scene does look very much like Bingham. I have only been to Boroughbridge once briefly though.
