My GF was raised at St Mary's (her grandfather was Vicar) and Alf was her vet from the early 70's until he died. She says he was a MUCH better horse vet that he claimed in his books, and was as sweet and kind as his stories make him sound, and Siegfried was exactly as he was described.

@@Maid-en-HeadSiegfried was Donald Sinclair, and his brother Tristan was named Brian. Herriot was obviously a fan of Wagner.

James Herriot was such a good writer. His books are modern classics .

We didn't have television in the 70's & I read all the Herriot books many times. Those books helped to shape my character and millions of others. I will never forget the story of two daughters: an elegant & wealthy young woman who sneered at her dowdy old father, and a farm girl who rode her bicycle 4 miles to get her dad a bottle of beer for a surprise, as a treat with his dinner. So beautifully told it made me cry.
I was so angry when I read that the UK taxed him at the rate of 98%. Pure ROBBERY. He didn't get to enjoy all that he earned, but I'm grateful to him for the life lessons.

Was that to pay for their socialist medical system? I don't doubt the USA will have that problem with our increased refugees, "free" education for "certain" students, and reparations owed to so many. Our disabled get far less help.

Well, taxation is coerced theft. People are not even consulted about the different taxes, tax rates, and increases. It is all arbitrary, even the fines. The government just dictates what we should pay them, grrrr.

Thank you for such a fascinating tour! I was 14 in the '70s when our vet recommended "All Creatures..." to my father. He would read aloud to us after supper as we continued to sit around the table, and he gave paperback copies to several people for Christmas that year! Needless to say, he bought hardbacks of all remaining titles the moment they were published. I'm now in my sixties, and of all the books I've read and reread in my life, James Herriot's are still among the very best! 😺💕🐾

We prefer you to see the scenery, but see us just enough to know who we are. That was one of the things we said when we started youtube. We would rather do voiceovers than speak as we go along. So You see more rather than looking around us to see what is happening.

Well done! It brought James Harriot and Skeldale House back to life for me! I read all of James’ books, probably in the 1980’s. I remember laughing a lot. He had such a way with words in describing the local people and the way he reacted to them. They were people I would have liked to meet! Thank you very much for posting this video, well researched and well done!

During a visit to UK in December 1983, I learned that Alf Wight was still practising in Thirsk. I went up from York by train and had the long walk from the station. As this was before the museum was established, there was only the front of the house to see, and the surrounding streets. But I was very satisfied and thrilled to have seen where that marvellous series had its beginnings.
Thank you for your excellent production: it has been like an actual visit. Especially showing the studio sets.

A dear friend of mine took me there when I visited England in 2007. James Herriot's son was
in the gift shop standing next to me, signing books by his father and about him. I had no clue but my friend did and was nudging me in the ribs with her elbow, saying "Thatshissonthatshisson!" I can heartily recommend this museum - it was a wonderful experience. Very grateful that my friend took the time to take me there.

I didn’t think you could top the Bronte sisters episode, but this is really excellent. Of course, I’m a huge fan of James Herriot. I have a picture of him on my desk. I own many of his books and the series DVDs. I worked in a bookstore after school in the early 80s, and we couldn’t keep his books in stock. They were so popular. And I live way across the ocean in Louisiana, in the States.

Thanks, as always. You are my eyes and ears. I look forward to next week. I remember going across the Yorkshire moors and suddenly seeing a piece of classical statuary and realizing what a weirdness Castle Howard must have been when it was built in the 18th century. From afar, it seems only a film set. In real life, it is a fantastical appearance of Rome in a farm setting.

When I was young in the late ‘80’s (September 1989) we travelled to the UK and went to Yorkshire to ‘do’ The Herriot Trail as it was called then. Everything from Thirsk, to following the roads up into the Dales to visiting the various filming spots of the wonderful series All Creatures Great and Small. The original veterinary house was already a museum and you could pop on a white coat and have your photo taken in the original surgery. Alf Wight was still attending surgery every Thursday at the new veterinary practice not that far away from the original. We were told he loved to meet visitors on that day, but sadly we were in Thirsk on Tuesday so didn’t meet him. Such a wonderful experience for a girl from Australia.

I loved each one of Herriots books. I laughed out loud, giggled an even snorted so many times as I read those lovely,me arm books. How I wish life was as simple now as it was then.

Oh I LOOOVED James Herriot!!!!! What a lovely home. I grew up on these books and it was my dream when I myself rode ranch calls with a large animal vet (equines) and subsequently became a nurse. Dr. Herriot was a huge inspiration to many children.

@@MemorySeekers I don’t remember it if I did. I know I went looking for Skeldale House. Thirsk as I recall is a tiny market town and very lovely. It was in the 80s. Thanks for the great walk down memory lane. I love the Herriot books!

This must be an old video. I was in Thirsk 7 years ago and my wife and I were the 250,000 visitor to the new modern museum. They gifted us with copies of his book and we got to meet his son. A great experience for a couple of Texans far from home

Loved all his books. I saved my neighbors cow because of one of his books where he saved a prize sow with the new miracle drug penicillin, and it worked within a minute just like it did for him. A wonderful man and vet.

I loved the books and the first series of All Creatures Great and Small. Some years ago I found that I descend from Robert FitzRandolph who build Middleham Castle which I believe is shown in the background for some of the episodes. Through the marriage of his son to Mary Bigod, I descend from her father Roger Bigod and even son Hugh Bigod. As such, I was at Runnymede for the 800th Anniversary of the Sealing of Magna Carta. One of my DAR Patriots is Robert FitzRandolph. My great-great grandmother, Sarah FitzRandolph, married John Stewart and thus the FitzRandolph name "left" the family, but we had a very long run with it.
