Hi Susan! Greetings from the boot heel of Will County in northeast Illinois. Before I get started I want to congratulate you on your retirement. Now you can enjoy life to its fullest!
For 2024 my sister and I are changing our butterfly focus. In the past we concentrated almost entirely on monarch butterflies but starting in 2023 we planted dill to attract eastern black swallowtails (ebs). To say the least the ebs experience is quite different compared to raising monarchs. Where monarchs are aggressive and predictable, the ebs are slow, methodical and unpredictable. i was shocked on how slowly an ebs caterpillar grows, how long it takes an ebs to pupate and how long it takes an ebs to eclose. Fourteen of the twenty ebs chrysalis from 2023 overwintered and did not start to eclose until mid-April 2024. In fact I still have 2 ebs chrysalis from 2023 that have yet to eclose.
One major positive of the ebs is obtaining the food supply. We planted approximately 10 dill plants in 2023 and they provided more than enough food tor the ebs caterpillars. We let all the dill grow to full maturity and then sprinkled their seeds around. We now have about 24 volunteer dill plants growing from last year's seeds. This year we also planted 3 bronze fennel plants to help subsidize our ebs food supply.
It is the difficulty in providing enough food for the monarch caterpillars that is causing us to backoff on going full bore on monarch raising. I just had my 69th birthday and old age has taken its toll. I am no longer physically able to go out and aggressively collect the milkweed necessary to feed the voracious monarch caterpillar appetite. I still have six swamp milkweed plants in my butterfly garden so raising a few monarch butterflies will still be an enjoyable experience.
As far as 2024 is going we have had a normal May with ample rainfall and normal temperatures. We have one monarch chrysalis in the enclosure and one ebs caterpillar that just today started climbing the enclosure to find its best place to pupate. The ebs action does not pickup till mid-July so I was quite surprised when my sister spotted our first ebs caterpillar of the season.
Well that's about it for now. As the butterfly season progresses I will try and give you updates on how things are going.
In a nostalgic note I still remember the first time I started watching "Butterfly Gardening Inspirations". I was searching the TH-cam for information on raising monarch butterflies when lo and behold your channel appeared. I was immediately hooked and from that day forward I have been one of your biggest fans.
I wish you and yours good health and let's all have a grrrreat Butterfly Gardening Inspirations day!!!

Oh my goodness, I was just wondering how you were doing today. It is so great to hear from you. It is viewers like you that have kept me going all of this time. I have raised a nice variety of caterpillars at this point and I have to say that Monarchs are by far the most high maintenance and challenging. I have really backed off raising them here in Florida because we are having such a significant issue with OE. Swallowtails are so laid back. My favorites are the Giants…so mild mannered and easy going, I really think they are my favorite. I have 3 ebs that just pupated and 1 still munching. I hope I find more eggs soon. It is nice that they thrive on a variety of host plants that are easy to grow. I really look forward to your updates this summer. It’s really great to hear from you!!!

Hi Susan. Would love to see you collecting seeds again. Something I need to do, too.
This has been a good year for flowers, sadly, not many butterflies to enjoy them tho. I grew a ton of fennel, parsley and dill from seed for the Eastern Blacks, but only 2 happy munchers have been found. 🐛🐛 It’s been a crazy start of butterfly season here.
Interesting thoughts on OE and Tropical Milkweed. 🤔 I’m sure our Georgia friend would like our monarchs to stay here. 🦋🦋

It truly is a good year for flowers, probably because nothing is eating them. 😂😂😂. So focusing on the bright side of having more seeds to collect is a good idea. But, I’m still holding out hope that we will get swarmed with swallowtails. It’s not even summer yet. 🥰🥰🥰

So I’ve added 3 new beds in the past couple of weeks. 😅. So that’s exciting. I’m also experimenting with different ways of growing Swamp Milkweed because mine never come back.
Also …. I cleaned out a shady spot with super rich soil (for Florida). I’m thinking of devoting it all to Stoke’s Astor. Have you seen the Stoke’s at Green Isle ???? That’s what I’m hoping for.

A whole bed of stokes aster would be lovely!!!! I have one plant and I have 2 baby seedlings. Butterflies seem to enjoy the flowers too.

Do you ever use pine straw as a mulch? In my experience, it works best once pine bark begins to decay.
Because I was run over by a little invasive weed I had to go back to pine bark this year because it’s a better at suppressing weeds.
But I’m hoping to go back to pine straw because it’s lighter to haul around - lol.

Where do you buy your pine straw? I like it too, but don’t know where to buy it.

Pine Straw of Central Florida in Winter Garden. They deliver or you can pick it up. It’s about $5.00 a bail (or was last year) as opposed to current garden center prices of $7.99 to $8.99.
It goes further than bags of mulch.

Went to The Nectary & bought 4 of your Bush Mints. 2 for me and 1 for my sister & 1 for my nephew.
We took all the grass out of my nephew’s front yard & he’s going mostly native.
Non-natives will be Vitex Tree & Mystic Blue Spire Salvia for bees. And Old Fashion Pentas (from you) for butterflies.

Me squealing in delight!!! You made my day and it’s only 8:00 in the morning. I ordered a vitex, it came in the mail yesterday…it is little. I can’t wait to see it in action.

Don’t let the little fool you. They’re fast growing. If they’re super happy, they’re REALLY fast growing! They like a prune before spring. Since you actually clip & prune, you’re in for a beauty !

Also, my nephew’s yard had grass and just a few non-native bushes. We took it all out. So it’s going to be a super fun project. I’d TH-cam it if I had the energy - lol.
One side of his yard has 4 20 year old live oaks. So that’s wonderful.
His back yard is completely empty except for struggling grass. We’re going to plant a native tree of some sort - haven’t decided what. Than put native shrubs in two corners.
The front yard is going to have a Red Maple tree, a Vitex, a mixed native shrub hedge on one side.
A Red Bay Tree, False Indigo tree. Then the rest wild flowers, Pentas & some Mystic Blue Spires.
My sister hired a garden designer who did an absolutely bizarre design. So we ditched it and designed it ourselves ☺️

Good Evening here from Indiana! I enjoyed hearing your thoughts on the spread of OE with the monarchs migrating. I would be interested in reading statistics of how many Florica monarchs actually migrate up North. If not many do, then the problem of spreading is mostly solved already. Do such statistics exist?
