    When i moved here i was determined to have a "perfect" garden. I spent my first couple of years here digging out violets, until I finally realized that i was losing that battle and started trying to learn more about my "weeds". Now i cheer for every scruffy weed that hosts fritillaries!

      Same! I had no idea they were so necessary, and once I changed my perspective to see violets as free, no-fuss green and living mulch, I’m so happy to have them take over certain areas. Not to mention their flowers are lovely and so welcome.

    It is so great that you have highlighted the importance of host plants, and not just pollinator plants, in several of Flock's videos. It is a differentiation that most of us don't make unless someone draws it to our attention. It is an aspect of gardening that I have become much more aware of and interested in pursuing and have found resources supporting our insect populations here in Colorado. So thank you so much. Also wanted to say that I love the summer outfits that you are wearing in your recent videos. I look forward to being able to break out that clothing when it gets hot - colorful skirts and little tops and sundresses - it is a sign to me that the real heat of summer has finally arrived and I'm here for it.

      Glad that you are picking up on the insect videos here and that you share that in your regular day-to-day out west. I'm an entophile myself, so I like doing informative videos like this. And thanks on the clothing compliment. All of my stuff is in boxes at the moment with renovations, so I'm lucky if I can even find all my stuff to wear; and sometimes I forget even what I have!

    I don't live in the US but despite that I enjoyed to learn about your native butterflies and I learned so much. You have so many beautiful ones over there! If there are any natives that aren't present in your area have you considered buying native caterpillars online, raising them up and then introducing them? I think that would make for an incredible video!

      We floated the idea of creating a little butterfly garden here, so folks can interact / see the caterpillar phase, but think that may be an activity down the line when we settle in more here. And thanks for watching even though this is different from your region!

    This is going to be one of my favorite videos. The year is waning. This will be good horticultural therapy, in December. We hadn't seen butterflies, for years. Maybe it was the drought. Now, I've seen 2 different kinds of butterflies, flying closely, in view, on the same day. Something has dramatically changed. It's like another Wall, has come down.( My neighbors have planted a new small, down-trodden Japanese Maple. The leaves are brown, dried and shrivelled. The older ones are still elegant and lush. I hope that they can save that poor stick.) Your garden is surely a nurturing oasis, for any travelling butterflies and is a joy
    for us to see. We spent our childhoods, in the fields and this reminds us of that. We had lots of chicory, milkweed, iris, snapdragons and another flat flower, made of tiny parts, with a dark spot in the middle. We had mostly Monarchs, cabbage butterflies and a rare Swallowtail.

    Just got caught up on your latest videos, this one really made me think differently about planting for pollinators, so thank you! I'm guilty of thinking about nectar and neglecting caterpillar food, so I'll look into what plants to introduce for our native butterflies too. On a butterfly theme, I presume your top / dress is designed to look like a butterfly? It's a beautiful outfit, themed to match the video (or perhaps not, just a coincidence!)

    Great video. Interestingly here in Europe we have similar (or same) butterflies and hostplants. Swallowtails and fennels are one example.

  •  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I have learned to plant a wide range of host and nectar plants. Many species seem to have preferences based on a range of factors. So I try to provide a large range of host plants. Or at least a couple choices. Whether multiple species of milkweeds for monarchs or multiple genus like Carolina wild petunia, lance leaf frog fruit, and snapdragons for common buckeyes.

  • @RichardPallardy
    @RichardPallardy 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    You're probably aware of this, being a taxonomy aficionado, but there has been a bunch of controversy over the placement of skippers. I think they are now formally classified as butterflies but used to be considered intermediate between butterflies and moths.
    Also, apparently planting tropical milkweeds in the wrong areas can spread disease to monarchs? Looks like all of yours are regional or approximately so. I haven't dug into that much but definitely could be something to investigate. (Would be a bummer ... some of the tropical varieties are so neat.)
    And finally ... boneset! The best pollinator plant I have seen for small native flies and bees. They just swarm them ... easy for their short tongues to access. And so beautiful, if perhaps a little weedy.

  • @Fellowtellurian
    @Fellowtellurian 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Side note: have you ever thought about creating a website where you sell various seed mixes by microbiome or by pollinator type? I know American Meadow does this but when I read the seed mix, there always seems to be filler speeds or non native seeds mixed in with them.
    Also, many of us on the east coast deal with clay soils. Would be super helpful to get into how to get some of these seeds to germinate successfully.
    Anyways! Great video, just adding my several comments to help with the algorithm😂

    • @FlockFingerLakes
      @FlockFingerLakes  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Maybe down the line doing some seed varieties. At this stage, we're really just focused on getting the land and the buildings in tip top shape. But I agree with you: I don't typically get pre-mixed seed mixes for those filler seeds, so often just get individual seed and then make mixes myself. Only way around it!

    This is a video I will certainly watch many times as I take notes. The photos are my best way of remembering the various caterpillars and butterflies
    Thank you for posting this exceptionally useful video👍
    I will now go back and watch your other videos from your playlist.
    This year my garden was invaded by the Spongy Moth caterpillar which defoliated many trees other than all of my Oaks. I am assuming that this is the reason that for the first time I have mainly the greater Spangelled Frittilari and have not seen any of the other usual inhabitants here. Very sad about this. The Red Lily Beetle forced me to remove over 100 Lilies as the invasion of the RLB was worse this year than any previous year.
    Is your gardening zone moderated by being in the Finger Lakes? What is your native soil like?
    Thanks for this very useful video?

    • @FlockFingerLakes
      @FlockFingerLakes  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We had spongy moth the first two years that we moved here and this is now the first year where our trees have caught a break, so we're feeling you on that. We have some useful spongy moth videos if need be. And we too have the RLB, but for whatever reason it wasn't bad this year and the lilies made a major comeback, though I removed them rom the planters because they are easy picking. Native soil here is silt-loam with around 20-24% clay. It's got stones in it; but the area used to be old grazing area and was heavily trampled, so we're just slowly building back soil. And we've augmented beds heavily.

      Oh yeah, sorry. I said, "depauperate" - and it's more of an old world phrase meaning "impoverished"-so referring to the soil as "impoverished"... Note, however, that depauperate also has a botanical definition (not ironically) that means more "imperfect" or "incomplete"....
