Garden Bliss: Summer Days in My Butterfly Garden
Hi beautiful lady!🙋🏼♀️love your video! I have a question again. lol I have 16 gulf fritillary caterpillars on my passion fruit vine. I haven’t had it long from joyful butterfly. Will it be enough?
My husband drove me crazy, he gave my spider plant a box cut., trimmed all my day lilies back because blooms sticking out. Looked disorderly. He has been retired! My daughter and I do the lawns and gardens. But then she got a puppy. If he sees us plant it, he tanks it out!!! Drives me crazy!! Lol.
Great video Susan... In my garden there has been at least 4 Zebras Swallowtail every day for the last week. And they feed on just three plants and they are the Golden Dewdrop, Butterfly Bush and lastly the Butterfly Weed, passing over all the Red Pentas, Tropical Sage and Fire Bush. Last thing... you mention on an earlier video that your caterpillers are disappearing in the night and so I got up very early in the morning this week and I found a mass of Fire Ants in my Wild Lime covering and eating a 5th instar Giant Swallowtail Caterpiller. That really made me upset, but nature is nature.
I can’t even imagine having 4 zebra swallowtails at once. That would be fabulous. Oh my, that poor swallowtail caterpillar…I would be upset seeing that too. I’m going to look up the Golden Dewdrop, I haven’t heard of that. Thank you for sharing this info!!!🩵🦋🩵🦋🩵🐛🐛🐛
Hermosas plantas
Thank you 🩵🌻🦋🐛🌺🌿🌼🌳🌸🪴🐝
This has been the year of the swallowtail in my garden. I am finally starting to get some baby Monarch cats on my giant milkweed (ssshhh that’s not native). I need to up my fennel game to. I have grown so much, but they continually devour every plant. What I am not seeing right now are Gulf Fritillary and Zebra Long wings. I had tons of them earlier, but they seem to be slacking off. I am really excited to try some carrot foliage this fall and winter. My dill was beautiful last year
The carrots are so easy, just cut off the top and stick it in a pot with potting soil. Cut edges down on top of the soil and the top portion above the soil. There were just 3 swallowtails out in the garden with me this morning. They were beautiful. 🩵🦋🩵🦋
Momma swallowtail has been visiting my fennel and carrot tops a lot lately, my carrot tops are loaded with eggs...😳 My rue has 2 tiny cats on it for the first time.
Fabulous!!!! I went out this morning and there were more eggs, including eggs on the bronze fennel I just planted. 🩵🩵🩵🐛🐛🐛
@@ButterflyGardeningwithSusan Woohoo!!!
So you got another zebra swallowtail to visit, and I think I’ve said this about all three, but I think that one was a female😂. I may or may not have swiped some pawpaw fruits from my campus trees to get some seeds of them but for all I’m paying they can part with two fruits😂 I’m also buying some pawpaw trees from a site called Logee’s. They have some cool plants on there including heirloom red pentas. It’s kind of a gem find. If only they sold Sweetgum trees to feed my moths… but those I’ll have to buy from somewhere else.
We used to have a Sweetgum tree in the front yard of the house I grew up in, in Pittsburgh. I’ll have to check out that website.
Lots of bees on the white flowers. That's good that you have both butterflies and bees that means you have a healthy garden.
I wish I could identify all of the pollinators, there is such a variety.

Is "Porter Weed ' an annual or perennial?
In Florida, it is a perennial. 🩵🦋🩵🦋
Lol, First! 😎 And I was just watching another one of your vids
Oh my gosh, I was just thinking about you! Wondering where your comments were. 😂😂😂🥰🥰🥰
How long does it usually take you to water your entire garden?
Well, I honestly don’t know. But, I love be watering, it is my zen time, so I just relax and focus on not hitting butterflies with the water spray. I hardly ever water my natives unless I have planted something new. The rest of my garden I can reach with the hose while sitting in my garden chair…I guess I could get it done in 20 to 30 minutes…but I probably sit there longer. 😂😂🩵🦋🩵🦋
The walkway look magical! I know you are always looking for content ideas. I really need a crash course on Swallowtail identification. I tend to just throw Giant and Eastern Black names at all of them. Maybe I have something more exciting! I have one of those ID pamphlets that I love, but it doesn’t really highlight the difference. I also would love to see how to plant the tops of carrots for food and blooms for this winter. My dill was beautiful this winter and spring.
I have one tiny dill seedling…I love the way it smells!! You will love tonight’s video, it is completely about swallowtails. I can start making little poll quizzes in the community posts to help practice naming the swallowtails. Or just call them all Eastern Giant Black Tiger Polydamas Pipevine swallowtails. Did I get them all??😂😂😂
@@ButterflyGardeningwithSusan A good solution

@@ButterflyGardeningwithSusan thank you!!!
Hello, I just realized I forgot to comment! I wanted to comment on that gorgeous male queen. He’s got two extra white patches on him towards the middle there. That means you have a butterfly with an aberration in your garden. If you google some pictures there are butterflies with aberrations that are slightly different and drastically different. But I just thought it was a cool little thing to point out. They’re uncommon so enjoy him while he’s visiting! I don’t know much more on the subject other than an aberration in a butterfly simply means it’s different from the standard pattern. As always though, I tapped the like button and look forward to the next video. (Oh and if by chance you can find sweet clover, it’s a great nectar and host plant for hairstreaks. I literally yanked some from a roadside in Crystal River when I was in Florida with my grandma one summer to raise Gray Hairstreaks😂)
You are always such a wealth of information!🩵🦋🩵🦋. I thought those white spots were different. I have taken some fabulous photos of him. I didn’t see him at all yesterday, so I hope he is okay.
@@ButterflyGardeningwithSusan He probably is, they’re pretty strong butterflies and usually live a good long few weeks. Maybe he went on vacation😂 I also appreciate the compliment of course!
🩵🦋🩵🦋
Esta muy lleno de vida
Thank you 🩵🌻🦋🐛🌺🌿🌼🌳🌸🪴🐝
I wonder have you noticed any different species that have showed up with your increased diversity of flowers? More skippers, hairstreaks, satyr, crescents, metalmark?
I got 3 new skippers this year, I have actually seen fewer hair streaks this year, I’m not sure why. I know I have a diverse population of little pollinators. I love adding more and more different types of flowers to my garden. 🩵🩵🩵
Ohhh I love canna's. I have some trying to attract Brazilian skippers too but I think I'm kinda on the edge of the range. I'm sure if you get that canna established and as it starts multiplying that is when they'll probably show up! I can't wait! I wish sometimes we could fast forward a few years and see all the wonderful butterfly species that are firmly established in your garden then. Zebra swallowtail for sure and pheon crescent and atla I just know it will happen given time.
This just reminded me that I forgot to insert the photo of the Brazilian skipper…oooh, I should fire my editor😂😂😂😂😂
where are you that you dont have a lizard problem? Or do you do something to keep lizards, iguanas and other animals away?
I do have lizards, but not iguanas. I just keep balance as much as I can and let the food web systems do their thing. I have several black snakes living in my garden that keep the lizard population in line. Although there are still too many of the invasive anoles. I am in central Florida.
@@ButterflyGardeningwithSusan ahhh ok yea the snakes help. The anoles are everywhere here in Fort Lauderdale, plus the iguanas but I created some barriers around my garden beds. But the little anoles or other small lizards are eating some pentas, crossandras, and more
Oh wow! The anoles aren’t eating my plants, but they sure do eat butterflies and caterpillars. But, man do the snakes keep them in check. I love my black snakes.
You made comment about caterpillars disappearing over night maybe those lizards you show sometimes have something to do with it!
Oh, for sure they do, but the lizards are out during the day. There are hunters that only come out at night that get them too.
Okay I just got settled in for the night and decided to wind down with this video. I loved it! It was like me this week. I legitimately have been looking for all the new plants on campus that I can take home tomorrow in an attempt to root them at my house😂 I found some things that you’ll see tomorrow on IG. Plants are fun. By the way my mom said my joyful butterfly delivery caterpillars are doing well on the false nettle. I wonder if I got red admirals or question marks😂
Wait, your delivery came with caterpillars?
@@ButterflyGardeningwithSusan yeah, my false nettle from joyful butterfly came with two caterpillars per plant and two inchworms on my ironweed😂
@@tylermack9248 I love Red Admiral butterflies.
@tylermack9248 That is fabulous🩵🦋🩵🦋
Hey Susan, don't you have. a toothache tree? If so, what are your thoughts on it?
Yes, but it is very small. I don’t really have thoughts yet. 🩵🦋🩵🦋
Thanks great video. Nature or shall I say gardening has to be #1 when it comes to becoming grounded while doing it. I totally get you Susan. Not only is it a safe place, it's a place to be close to source, whatever that is for you, and feed your soul!! Then add all you incredible friends flying and crawling around....wow...Amazing. Yes totally agree too , makes carrying hundreds of buckets of water today so worth it when you are surrounded by source in the form of butterflies, cicadas, birds, lizards, snakes and dragon flies to name a few xxx Much love from Australia
