This is one of the reasons I gave to my family when they pressured me to marry by church (I'm atheist, but they are Christians). We don't share values, plain and simple. It should be fake and disrespectful from my part doing so, and it's disrespectful from them for not accepting my beliefs and want some aesthetic. They got it.

Not so much the wedding, but the rehearsal. My mom’s friend “Karen”, wanted me and my fraternal twin brother to be the ring boy and flower girl at the wedding (we were five at the time). Our parents tried to talk Karen out of it, but she _insisted_ .
There was a compromise to at least give me and my brother a try. We got dressed up, and as we walked down the aisle I accidentally threw too many petals near my brother, who hissed “Stop throwing pedals at me!”. I swatted him with my flower basket. He hit me with the pillow. I yanked on his elastic “Y” back suspenders and snapped them. He grabbed and yanked the back bow of my dress.
We chased each other, snapping suspended backs or pulling dress back bows, hitting with a pillow or with a flower basket, howling and giggling, all over the church. Our parents were fighting back laughter. The priest went into the confessional booth and laughed. Karen stamped her feet and screeched as her fiancé fought down laughter, burying his face in his palms.
My brother and I got kicked out of and banned from the wedding altogether, as did our parents (much to their relief). We left and laughed all the way home.

There was this one wedding that I attended back in 2014. The music at that wedding was loud as hell, and it was cold as the Siberian mountains outside, because of a polar vortex. What's worse is that I was seated close by the ballroom door, located directly parallel to the outdoor entrance. Everytime both doors opened, I could feel bitter cold. Not fun.

My cousin's wedding in 2013. She and I have never been close (she's not a bad person, but kind of snobbish and uninterested in things that interest me and was always much closer to my cooler older sister). So my older brother and I get invited technically through my sister and my Aunt, her Mom, we (me, older brother and her older stepbrother, my blood cousin) are treated like pariahs by the rest of the family at the ceremony and then we went to our version of the "reception", which consisted of platters of cookies and miniature cupcakes. Turns out that A), the "real" reception is only for specific people who apparently RSVPed before and B), which my sister had conveniently failed to mention to us. Worse, when I tried to mention this to my sister sometime later, she defends her! Unbelievable. Just writing this made me angry all over again.

My mom was forced to skip an acting audition to go to a third cousin’s wedding back when she was my age (21). She barely knew this cousin but her mom made her go. This cousin’s wedding ceremony lasted less than 20 minutes and the reception was short, too. No time to really appreciate anything. Funny thing is that the cousin’s marriage lasted about as long. They filed for divorce less than 6 months later. My mom says it was the biggest waste of time in her life.

Not my wedding, but a story my aunt told me.
Two people, one from Spain and the other from another country were having an outdoor wedding, in Southern Spain, in July! To add to tgat, the sun decided to be even hotter than hell that day.
Too keep it short, there wasn’t plenty of shades and not alot of water was handed out, several people got badly burned, and several more actually fell ill. At the end off the day most can’t take it anymore and leave.
On the other hand I was hVe nice short story. When I was 9 and in Elementary school during recess there was a wedding party going on across the street. Lots of kids and teachers actually went to the fence off the school playground to check. Bride and Groom come out to take pictures. Wedding Photographer notices the audience and has an idea.
Couple takes a photo with all the children cheering at them in the background. We stayed until they and the family left in their cars. Bride actually came by later that week to give the school a copy off the photo and it was hung in the hall for a while. Nice and wholesome moment. Hope they’re still married.

Back in 2013, my aunt got married in August. It was the worst wedding I've been to despite all the weddings I've been to being normal. The ceremony was in a local Catholic church, and lasted an hour and a half. Right after pictures (another half an hour), we went and had a picnic behind the church under a pavilion. After that, I spent a little time at a great aunt and uncle's house. The bride, groom, and the wedding party rode to the groom's parents' cottage on Houghton Lake in a very old RV my parents had just bought (my dad was the driver, mom was one of the bridesmaids). About halfway to the cottage, part of the rubber that was on the roof of the vehicle tore off. My dad pulled over and climbed up there to assess the damage, and my mom started crying. One of the guests took my mom the rest of the way there while my dad put a tarp over the damaged roof. Once the problem was solved, my dad drove the rest of the way to the cottage to drop off the wedding party so they could get on a pontoon that would take them to the reception that was at a lakeside hotel. I was 10 at the time, but when it came time for dinner, I went to the buffet that was catered by the hotel, and got some food. Unfortunately, the food was the shittiest tasting Chinese food I'd ever eaten, so I didn't eat it all despite liking Chinese food. Regardless of the RV being damaged and the bad food I had fun. After the reception, we had a pool party in the hotel's pool area that had a water slide. Well, the next morning I found that the little amount of the catered food I'd eaten was a mistake because I farted a really nasty smelling fart back in the hotel room after the breakfast gathering where my aunt and uncle opened gifts. After farting, I took it as a hint that trouble was brewing inside of me, so I went to the bathroom, pulled down my pants and underwear, sat on the toilet, then proceeded to empty what I'd eaten the day before into the toilet. I think the fact that I drank a ton of shirley temples from the open bar didn't help what happened in my lower GI tract. I'll be 19 soon, and if I ever get married, I hope things go smoothly, meaning that everyone's clothes and shoes fit, nobody has a medical emergency, my period cooperates and misses the wedding by a mile, my partner doesn't cheat on me, the food is good, nothing is stolen, no vehicle trouble, everybody gets along, nobody sabotages, no major technical difficulties, and everybody is happy as well as has fun. If minor things happen that can be easily fixed at moments notice, it's fine.

Oh yeah. Catholic weddings are notoriously long. I was a junior bridesmaid for my mom’s best friend’s wedding when I was 9. The wedding was in a giant church and the ceremony was an almost 2 hours long sermon. I’m not religious and almost never went to church as a kid, so I was so confused when I saw everyone crossing themselves and didn’t know what to do. For part of the two hours I was not allowed to sit down, and some other parts I had to kneel on the floor. They also made me eat a communion wafer and I never had one before. I almost threw up and some other bridesmaids looked at me like I was a horrible person. Other than that, it was a nice wedding lol

What I get from these is people forget the party part to a wedding is optional so is feeding guests sure it looks bad like you don't like or appreciate others but so what its literally only an official day you stop being single so it should only matter to you and your now spouse, for everyone else it shouldn't be anything like didn't you already know they were engaged /know they will be at and throw family /friend get togethers like normal people. So everyone has the ability to congratulate them way before the actual wedding like why is this an event for the extended family if this peeps don't visit at any other point except maybe family reunions.
So the party portion doesn't make sense like if family want to throw a party let them but we shouldn't tack it on to a wedding. Just my thoughts.

    • @nessa4042
      @nessa4042 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Completely agree the party after is optional, just make sure your guests know that, and if family wants to plan a party for after make sure everyone knows. I also don't understand leaving your guests for hours after the ceremony if you're not going straight there then just don't hold a reception or let your family plan a party that you can show up late to and have your guests entertained and fed meanwhile, if you're gonna do it, do it right or not at all.

Putting a long story short, groom stiffed a former friend, and the latter obviously is not happy about it. Groom had been avoiding this ex-friend prior to the wedding, but his luck ran out right on the day itself. Ex-friend and five associates barged in, and started beating up the groom. Nobody intervened until a security guard heard the bride screaming, and called for backup upon witnessing the attack. Ex-friend and associates faced criminal charges, while groom had to explain the black eye he received (even makeup couldn't completely cover it up).

Amen. My MOH has a little stage fright so I assured her it was optional, only if she felt like doing it. I forgot she has an English degree. Her speech was 🔥

A hyper-Christian wedding. No booze, only religious music with choreographies performed by children from the Christian cult. And a loooong toast made with apple soda, I knew it because the man who gave the speech needed to clarify there was no alcohol in his glass.
This would have made an already-flanderized Flanders shoot himself.

That book story’s got me fuming.
Like, OP purposely didn’t read the book, despite being asked to for the theme of the wedding. Kind of a dick move. Same goes of the other wedding guests

the entire point of a marriage is religious so yeah if you dont want God in your wedding dont have a wedding. Cause even if its not a Christian marriage there religion in like all marriage ceremonies. In fact the idea of marriage here is actually based on Christian marriage largely so if you dont want God dont perform a religious ceremony. lol Just go to the state and have your civil union or whatever. it is different.
