Peacock Springs Cave Dive (Can we make it to Olsen Sink?)

  • Jonathan teams up with Wayne Kinard from Amigos Dive center to do a cave dive at Wes Skiles Peacock Springs State Park, making a traverse from the the "Peacock 1" entrance to Olsen Sink and back. (A traverse is where you enter the cave at one entrance and then you swim underground to another entrance.) Along the way Wayne shows off some of the interesting parts of the cave!
    WARNING! Cave Diving is extremely dangerous and should only be undertaken by divers with the proper equipment and training. This video is for entertainment purposes only and should not be considered “instructional” in any way. The dive team that produced this video is fully cave certified with years of experience.

    My dad mapped quite a bit of Peacock’s system in the early to mid 1970’s. He died diving the Slough when he got lost in one of the further reaches of the system. Thank you for sharing these beautiful videos. It is so good to see the exquisite beauty of my father’s final resting place.

      Tom, I did some cave diving with your Dad in the early 70’s. We worked together as volunteers on a state archeological project at Warm Mineral Springs and also dove many of the caves in north Florida including the Peacock Slough System. On the day of the accident, we had been diving together earlier in the day at Little River. When we heard what had happened, we drove back to Peacock III to see if there was anything we could do. When your Dad was recovered, there were three of us there who knew him.
      Your Dad was a great guy and one of the best divers I knew. He was also one of the safest. When we were diving Warm Mineral, the cave system was well over 200’, but your Dad had a strict depth limit of 180’ which he never violated.
      While he did get ‘lost’, there were no line arrows back then and the lines in the Peacock system were like a spider web. Had there been, he might not have missed the jump to the line running back to the exit. Line arrows came much later after your Dad’s and several similar accidents got the cave diving communities attention. I know you were very young at the time and just thought you might want to know a bit of the back story. If you have questions, message me on LinkedIn. Charlie

    I want to thank and appreciate the Blue World Team for the amazing work!!
    This channel is awesome. It's one of the best on youtube, if not the best :)
    The best part of this series is that it's enjoyable, with simple words, not boring at all and perfect for all ages. Very educational also. I hope more youths would spend more of their time watching videos in this channel and invest more of their time learning the wonders of our planet (especially the mysterious ocean) instead of pop culture.
    Interactive videos like these will also raise awareness regarding the importance of preserving nature, and how the little actions that we make will impact these wonderful creatures, places, and spoil its beauty.
    Thank you for bringing us along in your adventures! Love this channel and your work to the moon and back :)

    So, I always watch your videos because I'm a weak swimmer...Let's just say I have this fear lingering at the back of my head like, I don't have control or I might drown...yadda yadda yadda
    But!!! I'm so glad to share with you Jonathan that I was able to jump into the sea to snorkel. I did it two times already. Watching your videos is really encouraging, how you make it look fun and just like this video, it helps ease that fear I have.
    Looking forward to more of your adventures!

      I got my cave certification at Peacock in the 80’s. No stairs but at least P1 had that little “shelf” in the water you could prep on. Remember how bad Olsen & Pothole were, even with rope hung down from the sinkholes top? The springs around here aren’t what they used to be thanks to nitrate levels. I’m glad the state has taken over a lot of the springs but all the dairy farms are polluting the hell out of our water :-(

    Saw your Peacock to Orange grove traverse and started watching your videos. This one is a good first stretch goal for me. My dad used to say "stay out of the caves. If you've see one limestone rock you've seen them all." Watching videos like this are giving me the itch to get my cave cert. We intend to start out slow, just a little bit in and out for our first few dives to work up the confidence to do a traverse. I will 100% make sure I am trained and follow all the rules. I've watched enough of these videos to know what can happen.

      Get cave certified. Do not mess around in caves without the proper training and equipment. The training is fun and will make you a much better diver with the skills to cave dive safely.

    Great video Jonathan. Why you're not on TV is beyond me. I've pondered cave diving, maybe one day. At one time my attitude was I'll stick to the shallow warm coral stuff, no wrecks or caverns. Then I dove Blue Grotto and The Vortex and now love caverns. Then dove the Benwood in Key Largo and loved it. Now I get it.

      @@BlueWorldTV that's so awesome you came back down here tho! I was working as an ops ranger at Madison. It's where i met my dive mentor, Guy Bryant. He's mapped all the systems around there including Suwannacoochee to Ellaville Spring! Cow was still clear a few weeks ago but we've had a lot of rain and the Withlacoochee and Suwannee are high. Madison, Pot are browned out. Troy, Mearson, and Little River always brown out quickly since they're open to the river. Orange Grove Sink and P1 was amazing today but with the rain this weekend i think the river is going to intrude soon. So cool to see Wayne in your video too! That's alright, swimming is a useful skill but the BCD should keep you afloat and it's not like you've got to fight to stay neutral in the water. Not sure you can get your open water diver without it but you could perhaps do a discover scuba - ask at the nearest dive shop what your options are and you might be pleasantly surprised...

    • @jamesbach2021
      @jamesbach2021 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Swimming is a very important part of diving IMHO. When the fecal matter hits the rotating ocelator you may need that skill. That being said, being able to swim is literally a life skill. It will not only get you out of a jam, but keep you in good shape as well. My kids were in the pool by the ripe old age of six months. While neither one pursued scuba, they both enjoy swimming.

    • @widget3672
      @widget3672 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@jamesbach2021 I wouldn't deny its importance or usefulness. I'm only stating that for people that can't (for whatever reason) there are options. Scuba diving is a generally inclusive sport (you don't even need legs if you're alright using webbed silicone gloves - though I do realise that complicates open water diving in a current, low visibility or emergencies.)

    I am glad i found this channel 👌 best one on youtube. I was wondering what is the size of the tanks you are using for sidemount?

    • @BlueWorldTV
      @BlueWorldTV  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In this video (if my memory is right) we are using 85 cu ft low pressure (2400 psi) steel tanks. They are filled "cave style" which is overfilled by 10% to 2650 (which is standard practice with these kind of tanks because they are rated for 10% overfill). That gets them up to nearly 95 cu ft of gas in each tank. Cave divers love these because they are heavy and you can wear a 7mm wetsuit or a drysuit for extended dives and you still don't need weights. For me in a 3mm suit, they were a little TOO heavy and I needed a lot of air in my harness. Recently I had some time diving sidemount with aluminum 80s and they have a different problem, which is that they get buoyant when they get closer to empty, so the bottom end floats up. You need a second set of D rings on your harness to tether them tighter as they get empty.

    Did you dive this as a circuit or did you make two dives? You looked like you went in down the pothole line but came back the peanut line. One of my favorite dive sites for sure! Glad you made such an amazing video there.

    Amazing work! You dive in all sorts of waters around the world. Have you ever caught anything e.g: giardia, swimmer's itch, etc?

    Amazing to watch these cave dives.
    Could you please advise what your dive time was and the maximum depth you had during this dive
    Thanking you.

      I don't remember off the top of my head, but dive time was maybe 90 minutes with the traverse and max depth around 100 feet. The route we took in Peacock is not that deep.

    Hey Jonathan guess what! My best friend (Ashumii77’s Weirdness on TH-cam) got me your hoodie merch for Christmas! I’m so happy! I’ve worn it all day and I just got it today! Still don’t know if my grandma got me the Film Crew shirt but I have money so I’ll just buy it if she didn’t heheh

    Hi there love the video, can you tell me the tank sizes you guys were using? getting into tech and looking to cave certify over the next year.

      We are using steel 85s which are overfilled "cave style" so they end up at about 100 cu ft of gas.

    Thanks for this upload. It's my dream to be a licensed diver. But i guess I'll just sleep again cause i can't conquer my fear of deep, dark water.
