  • Why do you guys think the council installed these skate-able objects in this random park?
In this video I go over my theories & opinions on why the council has been doing this as I skate all 3 of the obstacles that they have installed at this park

      Go and install them yourself.
Weld up a few obstacles and have flanges on the bottom with holes pre drilled. Buy a hi vis vest and a hard hat and take your drill and hammer drill, together with appropriately sized bits and sockets and use dyna bolts to fix the obstacles to the path...to the side of the main walk way of course.
Then have someone from the local paper come out and take some photos and write up a story about how the council is being innovative in how it is serving the needs of the youth in the community.
Everyone in Council will be confused for a long time as to who authorised the skate installations and more importantly, no will want to authorise their removal as it will be seen as a hit against the local youth.
It's not much different to what Uber did when it first entered a lot of highly regulated markets. Broke the law and later asked for forgiveness and then have the laws changed to suit them.

@@SauronsEye I like 👍 this. Where are u from? Because you’re smart. That is a terrific idea. 💡 some city’s in SoCal where I live, would take them out but some would fall for it, not my city or the one next to me, but in the suburban city’s with a lot of youth yeah it could work…..
I like this for a few places I can think but they are private communities with HOAs. So you would need the proper channels to get it done legally.
I have a spot in my mind, it’s in the city of Yucaipa Ca in this private housing track with amazing hills and natural speed.
Another would be Palm Springs, but so god damn hot.
There’s a street side walk with two sides for dog walking that be perfect 👍

Good video and interesting topic again Leon, well done.
I'd also like to mention one thing related to skateboarding culture: making and unlocking new spots for skateboarding is as important as learning new tricks, if not more important for local skateboarding community. You might not have such need in California anymore but I believe that every skateboarder can do something to make their neighborhood and community more skatable, especially when such places unlock opportunities to learn new tricks.

This is pretty cool even if it's a bit underwhelming as the spot for the day. If more parks had that I bet skaters would use the convenient ones.
Minneapolis just put in a park that's like a very long walking path but also a legit park that kind of weaves through and around a park with actual walking paths. It's super fun and kinda like the mash up of this and a regular park.

great vid. im sure what you suggest is a factor in their thinking.. but i think mostly just councils trying to provide more variety for their residents. i wish there was more of it as much as multi million dollar skateparks are great.. a tiny ledge or flat bar is awesome too. i think moving forward every public park with a kids swing set should also have a small skate spot.

I think Council policies have more ‘place making’ priorities in them now and you’ll see more spots like this popping up all over the city which is great. It’s always cool to see a spot with wax all over it being used.
There’s a spot along the Cooks River near Lang Road Bridge, with a few small quarters and ledges built into an open space. Also the ledges and banks at Redfern Oval.
Would be mad if you did a video hitting all these ‘street’ spots!

    I'm 34 years old and haven't skated since I was 20.
Your channel and a few other channels inspired me to start again.

Just ordered a 9-inch popsicle flight deck with a 15-inch wheel base
also ordered the 9.13 andy anderson flight deck.
Going from a 7.5 to a 9 is going to be so weird.
    I'm excited for this journey.

    Any suggestions on egg decks?

      Thanks man, appreciate you! 🙏🏼
Haha yeah dude, that is a big jump but you'll definitely feel more comfortable on a bigger board 👌🏼
It just depends on what size popsicle board you feel most comfortable on dude. I would recommend going for an egg board that is 1/4"-1/2" wider than the popsicle size you ride since the eggs taper down towards the kicks and don't feel as big as the size they are labelled since that size is only at the widest point in the middle.

i don't think its to trick people off of the streets. atleast not any more than a normal skatepark.
Europe does this skateable architecture often. it's more about making random places more interactive and lively, and motivating people to get out and exercice more. theyre in the same categories as random fitness/exercise objects or bouldering walls youll find randomly. and skateable architecture actually opens up more oppertunitiy for street skating as it normalizes the sight of skating in public areas.
at the same time a cheaper alternative to a full scale skatepark. cause its expensive as hell to build those.

I know it's marketing hype with the name, so the young ones can feel like they're being rebellious against the adults but come on people, a skate board deck is a piece of bent plywood. Let's not lose sight of that fact.
The board doesn't make the skater any better. Only practice makes the skater better and perhaps learn to make your own decks, learn some skills and save some money and actually be original with your equipment.

This is probably a way to meet those quotas on the cheap so they don't have to spend money on actual facilities. I think you may be getting a little too conspiratorial with it. Skateboarding is in the Olympics, it’s televised and it’s more acceptable now than it ever has been before. City councils around the world are building more skateparks and embracing it as a sport like soccer and cycling because of its increased visibility and the money being poured into it. Of course they’d prefer you didn’t skate at the shops or industrial areas but I don’t think there’s a grand scheme to install these to prevent that. There may have been a petition to build a skatepark and they are trying to appease skaters without building a park or something to that effect. It’s impossible to say without knowing the area.

I don’t know if it’s a problem in your area, but cities in the states put skate parks and little skate plazas to keep homeless people away. Urban planners use it to gentrify areas. Skatepark goes in, artsy types move to the area, coffee shops and cafes pop up, area gets gentrified.

See what non skaters don’t understand about street skating is, we skate the street because it’s not designed for skating. Like the point is finding something in the real world, that was designed for normal everyday public use. And finding a way to skate it. It’s not our intention to damage the spot, and in fact we don’t want to damage the spot. But it’s an unfortunate circumstance that happens over time. Also our culture has looked down on filming video parts at skateparks, and theirs a whole multitude of reasons why. But either way it has an effect on future generations about what skateboarding looks like. As Ive gotten older (I’m 40 now) I’m kinda torn about it. Cause part of me understands why people don’t want us skateboarding on there property, as it does damage it sometimes. And we can often times be a little inconsiderate when we are in that moment. But also it kinda is what it is..🤷🏼‍♂️ Like it’s going to happen no matter what the public does about it. Like we find ways to remove stoppers, or just skate the spot differently. It’s just one of those things that if you’re not actually a skater, you’ll never fully understand.

That's 100% true man. The art of figuring out a spot and getting a trick on something that wasn't designed to be skated is amazing!
As we get older we start to see both sides of it and try not to damage things too much or leaving the spot when security or owners ask you too but yeah they will still never understand our side of it lol

These are actually just the standard Radials, I've got a video about them here th-cam.com/video/6EGgvXxsrCw/w-d-xo.html
I don't know if they still make the Radial Slims 🤔

Honestly, these things confuse me even as skateboarder.
They doesn't feel safe for pedestrians.

      They are pretty odd lol
At least they are off to the side of the path and not in the way 🤔

Shopping centres used to attract skaters in the early days because the floors were so smooth and were regularly cleaned, so highly unlikely you'd hit some thing that would lock up your wheels.
A lot of shopping centres 30, 40 years ago were never locked up at night as it was a thing for people to go window shopping. It wasn't a thing you did as you were walking down the street. Window shopping was the destination. So, obviously, skaters went in and utilised the space.
Skaters were generally tolerated because they didn't go and grind on furniture or hand rails. We respected the environment we were accessing and always left the area as we found it.
Too often, people are self centred today and will grind down hand rails, along benches.
You know how dangerous that is to a pedestrian using the stairs and grabbing a cut up hand rail and getting metal splinters in their hand or it's a wooden bench and you've raised splinters, not to mention dirtying up the seat and soiling someone's clothing who sat where you've ground your board.
Or the hand rails with anti skate devices on them. Think for a minute about an 80 year old going down those stairs and they have to let go of the hand rail for a moment because of an anti skate device. They could so easily fall and hurt themselves badly or die.
Have respect for other people's property and you'll find that you'll be much more tolerated. Be a dick, be treated like a dick. Simple really.
