I have had my Lightning for 5 months and it’s my favorite car/truck I’ve ever owned. For the drive quality, fun factor, scary acceleration, ease of charge at any station, I have no complaints!
I own the powerboost which is the hybrid. It does the same thing but with gas so you’re never worrying about charging. I owned the Lightning as well but found the hybrid to be a much better option for me personally but I hope you love the Lightning.
It’s not quite a dream. In order to get a true seamless setup you need a lot of extra equipment (ford pro charger, compatible inverter for your solar array, etc…). I have mine setup to use the 10kw generator port to keep my house batteries (10kwh) topped up in an outage, however it doesn’t quite work right and I’ve not bothered to investigate. I did weather a 38 hour outage in 2023 with pro power onboard, but it required running a lot of extension cables. Lots of info on the lightning forums on getting a good generator setup if you don’t want to go all in on the inverter stuff.
I went with a hybrid about a year ago. Much better fuel economy than my previous vehicles, and I don't have to worry about knowing where to find a charging station when traveling.
I can confirm your comment about maintenance. In 8 years with my Tesla Model S, I have never replaced the brake pads. Generative braking is real. The tires do wear faster with the instant torque and the weight. So glad that you are having fun with your new truck. Enjoy! On my drive to Truckee, I usually charge at the SuperCharger in Loomis, one stop before Auburn, then I can go to the Supermarket while charging. Now there is a new Supercharger in Cisco Grove as well, which is nice.
I don't get the EV hate. 100% it's not going to work for everyone. I have an EV. If you want or have one too...cool. If you don't...also cool. IMO if you're in a 2 car family it's best to have a EV for local trips, and then gas (hopefully 4WD or AWD) for road trips.
Agree. Have EV truck and hybrid crossover. Perfect for our lifestyle and needs. Also have a few gas dirt bikes and emoto with some homemade emotos. I get so much hate and I am honest the EV isn't for everyone's lifestyle and not the silver bullet to our ICE obsession.
"it's not going to work for everyone" And it is going to be FORCED on everyone. "no one is forcing..." look at what EU was about to do, and will do one day.
If the US was going to "force" EV'S you will be long dead by then so don't worry your little heart. The next generation will be accepting of more advanced technology than us old school petrol heads that worry about running out of a charge.
EVS are great. I’ve been driving them since 2015. Once you get used to it, figure out how to best drive it that works for you, learn how to coast, judge your range etc…, you won’t want to go back to ICE. Almost no maintenance AND the Lightning is a huge power station!
@bkxc Hey Brian, seeing the Florida VORTEX tag in the BG reminds me the Santos Fat Tire Festival is in March, if you need to thaw out and want to do a cross country charging video!
We're going to need a new phrase for "hit the gas" in these vehicles! I've been brain storming while watching. Hit the power? Give it some juice? Press the pedal? Excite the electrons? There's gotta be some clever phrase or alliteration I'm missing here haha.
Yo Brian. Just be careful with the hands free. I have the Lariat 5.0 long bed. I’d get the Lightning if they had a long bed so I can put a topper on and sleep and keep bikes in the back. Anyway it acts weird sometimes if there are changes in the lanes or the sun is low or rain or sometimes without reason. Must be ready to grab the wheel. One time it crossed the center lane on me!
@ my point is I cannot work with a totally electric car that makes you plan/or rely on electric charging stations that prolong your trip. Unexpected traffic jams...The stress that can come is not worth this being my primary car. Secondary for daily drive...maybe.
Every time I go up to the 707, I’ve always wondered about the unsanctioned moto area at 2:35 near and if there is anything worth checking out on a mtb…
Nice - Brian - I regularly (every 2 weeks) - road trip 700 miles in my EV. NO issues at all. 85,000 miles so far - zero maintenance. $15,000 CDN savings in gas - probably another $10K in maintenance and repair savings. The mining thing - a long career in petroleum industry. I assure you the environmental impact of oil exploration is many orders of magnitude more intense than mineral mining. A later career in automotive - EV is really the win. Energy - a worthy calculation for the curious is to figure how much areea of solar is needed to power every vehicle in North America. The result might surprise you. Also - hills make less of a difference than one would imagine. It might be worthwhile doing a small lesson in the vector calculus version of work and energy.
Once you get past Auburn and up towards Colfax, Gold Run and Blue Canyon your miles per kwh is going to drop significantly. That is the one area of California I wish I still lived in, specifically the Dutch Flat/Alta area, just gorgeous up that way.
I'm excited to see how it works out for you! Every type of vehicle has its use and a lifestyle that fits it. Full electric has it's place and is ideal for some, Hybrid has it's place and is ideal for some, and traditional Gas/Diesel has it's place and is ideal as well.
Love the content and glad you’re enjoying EVs, it really is awesome. I kinda enjoy figuring out all the chargers and watching speeds. It’s super nerdy but fun. I think you should make another video in the summer when you’re charging off the panels in everstoke. I also think that the batteries at everstoke is not charging quickly because the batteries itself is too cold. You can try it, but I think even if you charge the batteries off of the lightning, you still may have problems charging it fast. The good thing though - is you can just leave it plugged in longer overnight with no noise like you mentioned. You will have to account for some heat and conductive loss, maybe a few kwh. Enjoy!
I have regular F-150. I have a flat cushiony vinyl floor in the back. I am 5’11”. To sleep I move the passenger seat all the way forward then I can lie diagonally and stretch out. Add a foam sleeping pad and its decent night of sleep. I have done this at several MTB events.
I have had my Lightning for 2 years now... Were you using Heat and / or AC on this trip? That will adversely impact your range. Ford has a "Trip Energy" feature that breaks down Range vs. Climate vs. Outside Temperature vs. Accesories, and when it is very cold Climate + Out. Temp can be very significant
I think the “hate” just comes from the headlines saying that these vehicles are going to be shoved down our throats. Which, to be fair, they kind of have but we will see.
Sorry Brian, didn’t see the previous vid😊. People say what they want about the EVs, operation and maintenance for my Ioniq 5 is barely 25% of a conventional ICE car. Gotta like that.
I am definitely a legitimate road-trip guy. But completely open and interested in this tech. Hybrids are looking more appealing to me. Thanks for sharing your perspective. I didn’t read the comments from your truck intro video but I’m not surprised you got lots of opinions. I’ll reserve that kind of nonsense for your ebike videos. 😁
Nice video showing what a road trip with an EV is like. For most peoples regular use (including the occasional road trip), the EV debate is over. The Tesla model Y has been the #1 selling car on the entire planet for 2 years in a row. It may not work for a smaller percentage of people with specific use cases (lots of long road trips or towing for example) but it obviously works just fine for the masses. 95% of charging for 95% of EV owners are done at home or at work for a fraction of supercharging costs. It cost me about $5 to fill my EV from home while I sleep. I have about 70K miles and maintenance so far has been 1 set of tires and a bottle of windshield washer fluid.
Don’t fear the road-trip in an EV! Did 13 states in 12 days last year. Absolutely no worries. When I had my ICE I was always that guy that pulled into the station after driving with the gas light on for a week, so in my EV I’m that guy that pulls into a charger at 1%. Ok, maybe once at 0%. 😱 Trust your nav arrival percentage! Thank for sharing your EV journey, always fun to hear the thoughts of someone just getting into it. And don’t mind the EV haters, most of them have never even driven one, but they sure know everything about ‘em! 😆
I love my evs but I don’t tell anyone they need to buy one. That said crazy about the charging hiccup on Tesla, I used Tesla to go from Reno to Sacramento and back in my Chevy bolt and it went great! Very stoked to see the Portola chargers are up. Side note was cool to stay in the tiny home and talk evs with Aaron when my girlfriend and I stayed up there. And funny enough I did see Sarah at pacific crest a while ago with the van.
This video sure did hit close to home haha. I'm from the bay as well and always take the auburn forestville exit for a rest stop on the way to truckee. Also Shoutout Golden Rotisserie I always get the chicken quesadilla, definitely some of the best take out in truckee. 50-50, drunken monkey, tacos jaliscos, and full belly deli are also pretty good if you're in town.
i agree, i didn't buy an ev to save the planet. bought it to make my life easier. my tesla is 4yrs old, 55k miles, brake pads are still practically new. on my 2nd set of tires. you wear out tires fast if you keep launching from a stop....which is so fun to do.
The generator gas motor is not what puts out power . Check the out put of your generator power. My onan generator runs great but started slowly putting out power till the beaker let go.
Nice man. Kinda wish you got a Cybertruck but I get it. Can't beat the price you got on it. I have a model Y and absolutely love it. Never worry about range anymore. I've ton a ton of multi thousand mile road trips. I wonder what the charge faults are all about. I thought anyone could charge at superchargers now.
Two quick comments. Number one I got a custom mattress from mattress insider for my Ford Ranger backseat. I love it for road trips. 5’11” so a little curled up. Number two. Boondocks is a Tagalog word for mountain - bundok
I know I did comment on the 1st video to only share my first hand experience with the one we used for work and how it really is not a work truck but for a grocery getter is great. I am more happy you did not go Tesla truck and went with Ford but I do think after 3 years you will go back to gas. I never viewed any e-vehicle as anything political lol hopefully my comments have never come across that way. I know I have talked to you in the past about coming up to everstoke to help out with work, repairs if needed I still plan to finally get up there this summer maybe when you are there as well so I can at least say hello in person :), I did notice lol you used the same Truckee supercharger that we use often by the Savemart
Haha, we'll have a Cybertruck at Everstoke when you come by as Aaron just got one!! We're going to have to tie them together and do a tug of war. Hope I see you this summer!
I feel so much like getting an ID4 but man I would need to change so much stuff, electric panel as it’s loaded already, I would need tonget rid of one of my car but I live them both so much. Golf Alltrack and a Beetle Dune edition convertible :)
200 miles of range is extremely limited, especially past Sacramento going north… I think the perfect EV to get there would be the Ramcharger, or a Tesla with an emergency generator
I drive a BMW EV, and the built-in navigation system automatically tells me when and where to charge. Additionally, it only displays charging points where I can pay with my BMW card. Perhaps Ford offers a similar feature, but you’d need to use their internal routing system. I never want to go back to gas again.
Nice!! Yes, the Ford system does have some of that stuff, but it isn't updated fast enough to show off the new chargers that are all around now, bummer!
Might want to consider solar for your home as that 30 percent tax rate for that maybe going away . The ability to charge using the sun is such a big advantage in California. You proved brian you can do rode trips with an ev in a rural area . Yes you improved your personal air quality and othet who come in contact wity your truck . Many dont look at that side of the equation. Seth saved the day with his lightning with hurricane hellen .
I just put a 64 gallon diesel tank in my duramax and can make it 700 miles on a tank pulling my 10,000 lbs trailer with a full bed of product we sell. This is the most ridiculous this I’ve ever seen!
Can't say that EV content is of any interest to me personally but it's bound to be for someone ! Gotta say , the LMNT plug on a video driving around is a bit of a reach tho 😂
Im not ready to switch to ev. I dont do long trips all the time, but it just seems inconvenient when on a trip. I drove to vegas in november and at eddies world there was a line of cars waiting to charge. No thanks. Im driving from sac to salt lake in a week and i should only need to stop once.
While i would never own an electric vehicle, i do appreciate the fact that you seem to be open minded about the fact that it may or may not work for you. Its also very refreshing to see an EV owner that realizes that they arent better for the environment.
I'm fascinated by having the full on self-reliance with solar panels + batteries + truck. Also, do you remember when everyone said "I would never own a smartphone"? Haha
WTF are you guys talking about? Constant servicing of your ICE vehicle? Seriously? I live in Colorado. I mountain bike and ski. I drive from Denver to the mountains almost every day. I have my fourth RAM 1500 with a 5.7L Hemi. My newest one has the mild hybrid (e-Torque) motor. I constantly get 23mpg. That’s right. City and highway combined. I have never had to have any service on any of my RAMs, or my wife’s (she loves her RAM 1500). All I get is oil changes, tire rotations, air filter changes and wiper blades. And the bonus is that it takes me five minutes to fill up my tank to 100% for $50.
It's for keeping yourself hydrated. I find myself not drinking enough on long drives because you don't want to stop for bathroom breaks -- and then I get horrible headaches. There's a million ways to use it.
Ignore the RV haters morons. Your truck has NMC batteries, i am pretty sure. LFP batteries are only on the shorter range trucks AFAIK. Even with energy spent on mining, it's still better than an ICE car after 20-30k miles. And your battery will be 98% recyclable when it's done in 200-300k miles. Rule of thumb climbing: lose 10 miles of range per 1000' of climbing. Enjoy and see if it works for you.
Yeah, that's interesting about LFP in the truck! I guess the only evidence of that was an article that said Ford PLANS to use LFP for 2024. The spec sheet only says "Lithium-ion pouch" media.ford.com/content/dam/fordmedia/North%20America/US/2024/04/16/2024_Lightning_Tech_Specs.pdf
I got anxiety watching this video. I am just not understanding the lack of pursuit of hybrid vehicles. All electric vehicles are not practical at this juncture; until they can correct the charging location/speed/compatibility issues, and address the battery efficiency and cold weather issues. They pushed EVs on people without having the proper infrastructure for it. I'd rather have a hybrid gas truck that I could get 40 or 45 mpgs with as opposed to worrying like this on a 200 mile road trip.
@ well when the government puts demands on automotive manufacturers to build EVs or risk fines, then they advertise the heck out of them on the idiot box, I’d say it’s being “pushed” to the masses by the administration, the automotive manufacturers and to a certain degree, the general public.
I think it's just tough when 95% of trips can be completely covered by charging at home, but everyone is so laser focused on road trips or towing. While I'm totally fine with having a rougher road trip experience if I don't have to have endless maintenance.
@@bkxcI agree with the tooling around town aspect of it. I still wish they would focus a lot more on hybrid tech until the whole remote charging station issue can be debugged and seriously expanded. For instance, Jeep came out with what they refer to as a “hybrid”, but it’s severely overpriced and doesn’t even come close to a traditional hybrid in the sense of gas mileage. Almost like they went backwards in tech instead of forwards.
A friend keep talking his car to a local shop an he had a used moto an thay charge him almost 10k for a Chevrolet 4.3 used an no tune up . Thay just made it run an 2days in it broke down. I went in the shop an went off.
Brian, I’m surprised you didn’t just buy a cyber truck based on its 300 + mile range, full self driving, and charging availability, with no interest financing last month.
I have had my Lightning for 5 months and it’s my favorite car/truck I’ve ever owned. For the drive quality, fun factor, scary acceleration, ease of charge at any station, I have no complaints!
That's great to hear!!
The fact that the Lightning can power a house at night and recharge with solar during the day is just so cool. Truly a off-grid dream.

I own the powerboost which is the hybrid. It does the same thing but with gas so you’re never worrying about charging. I owned the Lightning as well but found the hybrid to be a much better option for me personally but I hope you love the Lightning.

Missing your 2018 mountains cycle ride 🤗👌
I bet your range will go up noticeably when it’s warmer.

Might be looking at the hybrid subaru forester when those come out.

Aaron from MTBing Adventures got a Cybertruck! So I'll be able to test it out.
@ sic!!!!
Two quick comments. Number one I got a custom mattress from mattress insider for my Ford Ranger backseat. I love it for road trips. 5’11” so a little curled up. Number two. Boondocks is a Tagalog word for mountain - bundok
Haha, very cool on both points!
Hey Brian--Great video! Charging station operators have 24/7 call centers that are very helpful if you are having any trouble at a station.
I think I'm pretty numb to any customer service being able to actually help me at this point. But if I'm stranded, I'm willing to try!
Is this a self driving truck?
Not really, but kinda sorta for $50 a month
@bkxc haha seemed like yr hands were hardly on the wheel! Looks mint enjoy yu deserves it
I say always do what’s best for you and yours, we really need to get back to agreeing to disagree..
What’s happened to MTB Adventure the site has gone from TH-cam ?
I could never drive a vehicle that makes me say “I’m not gonna make it”.
Hahaha
This is the exact I refuse to go full electric! I'll stick hybrids and what's proven
I feel so much like getting an ID4 but man I would need to change so much stuff, electric panel as it’s loaded already, I would need tonget rid of one of my car but I live them both so much. Golf Alltrack and a Beetle Dune edition convertible :)
Yes! So many other bits and pieces have to fall into place to make it work
200 miles of range is extremely limited, especially past Sacramento going north… I think the perfect EV to get there would be the Ramcharger, or a Tesla with an emergency generator
This was great,
Oh man, I am staying with a petrol engine for a few more years, but good luck with that truck.
Man those cali charging costs are crazyyy. Never have i ever paid over $30 at a supercharger lol. But great video!
California, baby!! It's unreal when you hear what other people pay across the USA!
Definitely not waiting for car reviews.
Lol, rooting for traffic. That would be a paradigm shift
Hahahah yep
Saw some Brandon Sanderson audio book, lets gooo!
Yeah buddy!!
tacos jalisco has been my go to taco spot for 25 years or so.
That's awesome!! Next time I gotta stop
Hybrid truck makes way more sense
I drive a BMW EV, and the built-in navigation system automatically tells me when and where to charge. Additionally, it only displays charging points where I can pay with my BMW card. Perhaps Ford offers a similar feature, but you’d need to use their internal routing system. I never want to go back to gas again.
Nice!! Yes, the Ford system does have some of that stuff, but it isn't updated fast enough to show off the new chargers that are all around now, bummer!
It seems California lives up to its reputation of being expensive, even with EVs! Happy Travels!
Supply and demand!
I love my ford f150.
I love it. You just proved that ev's are useless! Try pulling a 10000lb trailer across the country!
Lol, 99.99% of us don't GAF about pulling a 10k lb trailer across the country, but you do you.
I swear I saw you on first street today driving the ram promaster.
Yep, I just got some work done and I have to drive it around a bit before I try to pass smog.
I understand your tire selection but they are killing you range
I know everyone says that, but I had a couple hundred miles and averaged 1.8 mi per kWh before and now many miles later it's still 1.8!
@@bkxc fair enough. Those falkens are sweet tires. Rotate the hell out of them. It's a sweet truck. My brother loves his lightening
fair play for your honesty....
Trying my best!
Is there a way to wire solar panels into the truck so you can charge while driving? Would it not be worth it? Def. pros and cons to each fuel.
The math just doesn't add up for such a small footprint for solar panels. It's like filling up a pool with a garden hose..
The two way charging is a pretty amazing thing!
I just put a 64 gallon diesel tank in my duramax and can make it 700 miles on a tank pulling my 10,000 lbs trailer with a full bed of product we sell. This is the most ridiculous this I’ve ever seen!
Really not selling me on an EV haha
Can't say that EV content is of any interest to me personally but it's bound to be for someone ! Gotta say , the LMNT plug on a video driving around is a bit of a reach tho 😂
And for me this is the first video of his I’ve watched in a few months. This and his first lighting video. 😂
Not to be negative but it seems like going electric is a giant pain in the arse.
I'm willing to trade the charging for long trips with the headaches of maintenance in a gas car
you're great, I hope to get to the same level as you with my channel
Im not ready to switch to ev. I dont do long trips all the time, but it just seems inconvenient when on a trip. I drove to vegas in november and at eddies world there was a line of cars waiting to charge. No thanks.
Im driving from sac to salt lake in a week and i should only need to stop once.
Yep, it's the big trade off!
The ev cars are not new. But I understand California 2027 you can’t use your Rv motor home. It’s crazy. Ev have come along way an are getting better.
Haha
I believe only a select amount of Tesla chargers are open to non-Tesla vehicles - not the entire network. Probably why you were booted-off?
Nope, it wouldn't have started if that was the case.
It just hasn't been my experience, I guess I destroy every vehicle I drive
@@bkxc I doubt it. 😁 But I certainly hope you enjoy the new truck. Three year lease was a great idea. 👍
👍 GG
Too much planning/coordination for me. You can tell he has anxiety about this shit too
Isn't ELNT for "engaging in intense exercise"? 1,000mg of sodium without a lot of sweating, just sitting on a drive doesn't seem healthy.
It's for keeping yourself hydrated. I find myself not drinking enough on long drives because you don't want to stop for bathroom breaks -- and then I get horrible headaches. There's a million ways to use it.
Sick
Rent a Cybertruck and compare the experience!
I know a guy who just got one!
$3000 to remove some snow?! 😮
Yup
Wait so you paid 48$ for far less range than a tank of gas, and you had to wait an hour and a half.
Not my cup of tea either.
Those are the rates in california. Its not much cheaper to charge at home either with pg&e.
My subaru could have made that round trip on one tank.
Nothing against the truck, but had Brian bought a Ford E-Series van or Chevy Express over the Promaster, we wouldn't be watching these EV videos 😂
Hahaha! No, I think I would have moved on.
@@bkxc LFP are roughly 30-40% less energy dense than NMC and would only be in a shorter range truck. Yours has NMC batteries.
Are people “pushing” things if they simply mention it? Or do they need to be enthusiastic about it?
Almost like they went backwards in tech instead of forwards.
good luck to escape with it from natural disaster when there will be no electricity to charge or will be huge queues...
Solar panels fix that!
Lease would be $1099 a month and probably way fewer miles allowed. Love everything Tesla does, I'm just not a fan of the look.
not much derision in Winds and Truth, disappointing.
I'm near the end, getting a little disappointed
@@bkxc heh, still a good one though and 60+ hours of audio an book is a good value :)
